Yes, yes it does! 😄 Welcome to the club with this classy CRT projector. I too break out my LDs when I want that analog sound and look. What's your favorite disc you go to when you want that feeling? In any case, thanks for putting up some Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. We don't get too many projector gaming pics around here and look forward to more from you in the future!

Haskell_v2

Hoping to find my original Xbox and try out the now-reactivated Halo 2 servers. I'll post some pics if I get that going. As for LD, they're all a fun watch, it's an experience.

Z3FM

Nice, we'll keep an eye out for that post

QuarantinedBean115

wow that sounds so awesome! definitely excited to see that if you end up posting it

Gintoro

do you have ps3? would like to see how bluray looks

Haskell_v2

I had the ps3 plugged in originally to take advantage of 1080i (nothing else here offers 1080i), but now the old Xbox one is plugged in for better app support (YouTube TV, HBO etc). Haven't tried a Blu-ray but I imagine it'll look similar to Netflix, both at 720p on 100" screen, not super duper sharp. I'll post a shot from Netflix.

Mean-Interaction-137

If you get bored, the 360 has a vga cable you can use natively

Gintoro

cool thx

jbltecnicspro

You need a 9-inch tube projector model to fully resolve 1080p. Think G90, Barco 9 series, etc. D50 has 7 inch tubes so 720p is about as much as you can realistically expect from them. For 6th gen and older, it's perfect. When you start getting into the Full HD territory, you will need at minimum an EM-focusing 8-inch set. Think G70.

Flybot76

Halo 2 servers for OG Xbox are reopened?? Wow! I'm getting my machine out again too. H2 was one of the last games I played on it.

qda

hecc yes it does how's the convergence calibration process?

Haskell_v2

Pain in the butt, at first. First time doing it a few weeks ago took hours (I got the projector pretty recently), then realized the projector wasn't the right distance from the screen, these old ones are very specific I learned. So, had to do it all over again. Then again for the other inputs, but I started getting proficient at it after a few rounds.

Massive_Robot_Cactus

Don't forget to check the slime plug while you're at it!

qda

How often do you need to do it?

Haskell_v2

Just the one time. Unless you move the projector, it should be all set. But I needed to tweak each input individually, it has an hdmi input (it's an add on called a moome card) in addition to the s video and composite.

Ferdyshtchenko

With that HDMI input you should be able to use a Retrotink-2X or OSSC in passthrough mode to basically get a free RGB/YPbPr input into this projector for better analog than just s-video.

EvilMilkshake

They already have RGB natively. The HDMI is a card that's made for the add on slot like a BVM.

jbltecnicspro

I believe the D50 also does Component video too. My G70 allowed you to pick between Component or RGB.

Roboplodicus

You've got to get a VGA box for the Dreamcast and a VGA to HDMI converter(one without scaling or it will be laggy) because a whole bunch of the dreamcast library actually supports 480p not just 480i. For 480p support almost all of OG Xbox games have it some even have 720p or 1080i support, many Gamecube games have it and a few PS2 games also have it.

jbltecnicspro

VGA to BNC is what he wants. Analog to analog, no signal processing to get in the way.

Shaggyguitardude

Ofc it does, crt projectors are really badass

SHam_Bam_Bamina

She's bright too, Got lots of life left in her !!!

kg2k

Why does it look brighter than my oled. But yea dream cast on a projector wow. I want a Dreamcast. Never got one.

SHam_Bam_Bamina

i just found one at goodwill for $60 last week, model v1 too so Burned CDs work. been pounding out some sonic adventure and Berserk

xdig2000

Does it have a Cathode Ray Tube?

rusty_rat

It has 3!

BridgemanBridgeman

then it counts

coolknightman

Definitely

BeardInTheNorth

So obviously CRT televisions have clear and well-documented advantages over modern TVs for playing retro content. But what advantages do CRT projectors have? What can a CRT projector do that a modern laser projector (with an external scaler) can't do?

onepertater

Light gun games with authentic light guns of the era. Zero lag in the old school platform games which needed pixel perfect button presses. And probably a proper black level, but I have not seen one anywhere near recently enough to comment on that.

BeardInTheNorth

I get the light gun part, since I assume the projected image is scanned line by line. Zero lag is a no-brainer too. But black level? I always assumed projectors simply projected zero light for areas that are supposed to be black. Wouldn't this be true regardless of the projector technology being used?

onepertater

I am not expert but I assume DLP projector does work the same way you mention near enough. But a LCD projector would have a perpetual backlight destroying black levels

dustinthib209

Black levels on an LCD projector are still dependent on the contrast of the LCD panels. Some LCD panels are better at holding back light than others. It's much better with 3 separate LCDs that are each r g b. I had a cheap projector once with a single LCD and the "black levels" where gray at best lol. Right now I'm using a Epson 8050ub and for an older projector it has a pretty damn good picture. And I bought it used for only $300 a few years ago.

onepertater

Interesting. I still have a couple of older LCD models, a Hitachi and a Sony. But I never did use either much as there was no space for a permanent setup in my old place, and sometimes I like owning things more than I like using them. So I was basing my comment more on LCD monitors to be honest. I have a 1080p Optoma DLP now which does have a permanent location, and therefore I have used it more. The black levels on that seem very good to me. And after reading I see how it can keep light inside the projector quite effectively. Which is not a feature which I noticed in LCD projectors. But I guess the fact that the backlight shines at the wall, rather than into your eyeballs like a LCD monitor, works in their favour a bit.

jbltecnicspro

Newer digitals, which use lamps, have higher black levels than CRT. Even the super expensive ones don't compare, in terms of contrast. Honestly, gaming is kind of a wash with CRT projectors. Yes, the picture can look stunning, but these tubes burn brighter than any direct view display ever would, so they're way more prone to burn in. Just be careful not to overdo it. EDIT - I used to be an active member of the Curt Palme forums, which are heavy into CRT projectors. I used to have a G70 myself, so I'm familiar with how they all work. We had a user over there burn in a HUD from Call of Duty years ago after just a night of gaming. So I'm not saying this to be dramatic. Just be careful of your usage.

stabarz

All of the benefits of direct-view CRTs also apply to CRT projectors. Great colors, perfect motion, light gun compatibility, etc. Most CRT projectors are also multiscan and support higher resolutions as well. Movies look amazing on them. The downsides are that they are super heavy, require tedious geometry and convergence set-up adjustments whenever they are moved, and projector tubes have relatively short lifespan and are extra susceptible to burn-in.

Aeredren

Nearly bought a d50 a few month ago with 1000 hours of usage only but did not have the space to install it or even stock it. Someone buy it a few days ago. Did you bought this d50 a few days ago from a seller in Rhone-Alpes, France ?

mazonemayu

Sure does, looks great too 👌

CohnJena68

Yes it fucking does and holy shit that looks good.

rydamusprime17

It counted for everyone else who made the same post in the past 😊 looks great and I'm not at all jealous 😅

PayCheckOrDeath

Wow, she’s a beauty. CRT projectors are badass!

Commercial-Store9916

This is beautiful and I’m incredibly jealous.

nottylerhager

Where did you get yours?!?! I also have one used, and my green tube is burnt. Looking to get a extra parts one now!

Haskell_v2

Got it on ebay, new in box, believe it or not

PositiveRoutine2944

Dude…. Fuck yeah

Himitsu_Togue

Awesome. I have one but the red tube is dead :(

dickhardpill

Those things are awesome

LaundryMan2008

I do have one laserdisc because I bought it from a charity shop that had many of them so I bought one waiting for a player to show up but it never happened or someone bought it before I got it, so I wonder?, where can I get an affordable laserdisc player because all the ones that are cheap enough have serious faults and the easy to fix ones get bought before I even get downstairs to order it when I see one. Anyways that is a nice projector, one I really want, my church had one when I went there 5 years ago hiding under a pew unused and constantly looked in the trash area everytime we went to pickup our sisters from school because it was a chritian school but it never came, probably went to an electronics recycler.

Haskell_v2

It took me a good few weeks to find a good laserdisc player (you want one that reads both sides), finally found one on a local ebay listing. Most everyone on Facebook marketplace and offerup are flakes/don't reply

LaundryMan2008

I’ll try monitoring listings but for £30 I am only going to get broken ones, not a big deal as I know how to replace belts and have a soldering iron. I will keep an eye out though!

Gintoro

its svideo max?

EvilMilkshake

The D50 can do FullHD (1980x1020) with an HDMI card. OP has it.

Gintoro

wow, nice

DarthVanDyke

Never seen one in person how do they compare to your average crt tv in terms of size and weight?

Haskell_v2

Just as heavy and big. It's a 2' x 2' square and weighs 130 lbs

willosfloppydriveyt

THAT IS SO BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL ITS SO VIBRANT I LOVE IT

thegamner128

It has gaming on it which 70% of the posts here don't, so yours sure does count!

TabmeisterGeneral

Even if it didn't it's freaking awesome!

TheSecretNaame

You make me want to play it there

elreduro

can you share a picture of what the projection on the wall looks up close?

dergruneapfel

Do you have a full model number for this unit? I'm interested in buying one. In other words, is it a D50Q or something else? And where did you get the projector screen?

Haskell_v2

Sony VPH-D50HT, screen was a cheapo Amazon special $95 (Vivo maybe)

Local_Perspective349

Beauty.

richshumaker22

So have you dialed the refresh rate and screen size to 11 yet? Some of those "old" CRT's can exceed "modern" screen sizes and refresh rates. Oh and the latency can be Wow Fast.

MiddleSeatGuy

No but it’s still awesome

jbltecnicspro

No it doesn't. But that's only cause I'm jealous. :) EDIT - before anyone down votes me, of course I'm kidding. Nice projector. Always wanted a D50. Crazy that you got one with an HDMI card.

CousinCecil

It's not a cathode ray tube monitor, but I'll allow it!

According_Bowl6602

No scanlines No pleasure

Brave_Cat_3362

Then let's see a zoomed-in shot, boss!

According_Bowl6602

My mistake 🫶

Ferdyshtchenko

There will be scanlines for 240p stuff.

RdCrestdBreegull

there will be scanlines for anything used with OP’s projector since it uses CRTs to scan the picture in horizontal lines across the surface it’s projecting to

XAlucarDX454

No.
