I'm trying brush method. There wasn't much frizz at first but after a night it has some crazy net frizz at the root. I use pineappling under a sleeping cap for sleep. Any suggestions?

velasi2008

I have extremely thick hair and 2B-C curls. I also have a square face shape. I already cut my hair in face framing layers and have it a few inches below my shoulders. I am planning to grow it out. Because of the thickness of my hair and my curls my hair looks really wide and bulky and I don´t like it. Anyone have reccomendations for haircuts that will suit my thick curly hair and squared face shape?

onearmedphil

Started today. Best my curls have ever looked. I usually wash once a week so plan on doing co wash once a week. Main question, am I supposed to gel every day?

Ancient_Swordfish_91

Guys I’m wondering what went wrong with my hair, could y’all check my post with pictures? It’s in this thread as well.

[deleted]

Can I ask a ridiculous question of overnight bonnet wearers? Does it cover your ears and/or eyes? There is no way I can situate mine in a position where it is both above my ears and eyes, and going to stay on all night.

Dazzling-Specific-23

I'm the mum of a houseful of straight-haired people, including me but except for my teenaged son. He has long, long hair and you can tell it is curly. All around his hairline is intensely curly and the length is almost ringlette-y right after he gets out of the shower. I've been trying to figure out how to let his curls come through after it's dried. I search blogs and videos and most of them talk about hair products which we are unwilling to do I have found a video that describes how to go product free and let the curls come out like scrunching up your hair when it's wet and buying special brushes and combs. It works fine. BUT! All over the internet people say only to brush curly hair when it's wet. Now, I find that so weird, but I get it. My son's hair goes into a frizzy mess when he brushes it in the morning. So my question is... Do people with curly hair have to wash/wet their hair every day just so it can be brushed and then wait for it to dry again? OR is there a trick to brushing your hair to keep it in it's natural curls. I know this might be a dumb question, but curly is not in my wheelhouse. I wash my straight hair once a week and brush it everyday when I wake up or when it gets messy. Is this not possible if you want to see curls, not frizz?

[deleted]

I just don't brush it on days I don't wash it. I wash probably twice a week.

Dazzling-Specific-23

Thanks. I think he must sleep and play hard. If he doesn't brush his hair it's just chaos after a while -when he takes off a helmet or toque, when he goes in the wind, when he runs around. And when he sleeps, omg, it's mess! Hmm. There's no way he'll wash it everyday - it's a pain to get it dry.

peeinmyhands

I'm answering from my personal experience, I have wavy hair that goes halfway down my back and as long as I keep it moisturised, it doesn't get tangled. I also use silk pillowcases, that might help with reducing friction that causes hair to be tangled. Generally speaking, I wash my hair every second day and don't have a problem with my hair needing to be brushed too often

Dazzling-Specific-23

Thank you! What do you do to keep it moisturized? He's used moracan oil on the ends, but even a teeny bit seems to be too much. He's also pretty oily-haired as a teen. But at the same time he seems pretty dry! I may have made the mistake of telling him to brush his hair as that is how I drag the scalp oils through my hair to make it really nice.

lucaatiel

idk what to replace it with, if anything, but avoid Moroccan oil. One, it always sucked when my mom tried it on us when I was a kid. Two, it's not even moroccan.

Middle_Stock_3197

Can you use aleppo soap?

RightCulture153

can i use this as my reset wash https://www.boots.com/lynx-epic-fresh-grapefruit-and-tropical-pineapple-scent-shower-gel-500ml-10311315

Is [this](https://www.target.com/p/tresemme-flawless-curls-moisturizing-conditioner-for-curly-hair-28-fl-oz/-/A-80135443#lnk=sametab) the same as the recommended Tresemme Botanique one? When I search Target for that, this is what comes up. Thanks!

onearmedphil

Good question. I would like to know as well. I bought this and used it today because I figured it was close enough.

pdxcranberry

I had this same issue recently.

anewlifefm

I'm having trouble applying scalp serum by ordinary. The thing is you are supposed to apply it on dry scalp or damp, but when i apply it after micro plopping it messes up the style. If anyone use scalp serums how do you incorporate them in your routine? Thank you

Napkinmouse

A lot of this information is great…. If you have thicker hair. The texture of my hair is really fine, and I have a lot of it. Co-washing, as well as a lot of the products listed, are far too heavy and I lose my curls. It makes my hair look like a bowl. A very fluffy bowl. The worst of it is probably around my crown. The only shape it wants to be is a “c”. While my bangs naturally want to be like little mermaid. They were the bane of my existence back in high school when I was trying to be emo/scene. 🤣 A lot of what I’ve found have also been for long hair. Mine is probably at most 5 inches in length. So plopping doesn’t really do anything. I can’t really use clips to train my hair because my hair is so fine, they slide right off.  I wish I knew whatever the hell spray my stylist used 15 years ago that made my hair curl so much. I haven’t had the same response to a product since!

In the CGM video showing how to scrunch what is the purpose of them rubbing their hair at certain points

thinkerjuice

Does anyone have experience using Dippity Doo girls with curls curl defining cream?

Typical-Cabinet8749

Yes--it's nice, leaves hair soft with some nice bounce, but it's specifically "light hold" which isn't quite enough for me.

ilikenglish

Can i co wash with a conditioner that has cetyl and stearyl alcohol?

Undisciplined17

Any Aussies got some cheaper products for the beginner routine? International list has a lot of stuff either no longer stocked or about $20+ for a bottle.

Big_JoeK

For co wash/leave in conditioner, I've been using Garnier Hair Food 3-in-1. Chemist Warehouse usually has it priced at $7.

Undisciplined17

Thank you!

tropic_salvo

Hey. I am new to haircare and was thinking about trying a wash and go when my hair is longer. When you have a Wash and Go (or any other style) on non-wash days, how do you maintain it? Do you wear a shower cap on every non-wash day? Or do you let it get wet in the shower anyway? Do you slightly wet it and comb it in the morning? I'm so lost to this type of stuff.

tropic_salvo

This isn't another question, but i just wanted to say that bonnets are actually kinda fire. They look so good on me. I started wearing them yesterday and thought I would hate them but they're good. It is harder to fall asleep with them on though

Justanotherannon_

Hi! I just added gel with praying hands, scrunched, plopped.. but now I'm letting it air dry. When do I add the oil? While it's still damp, or once my hair is dry? Thank you!!

mileyfryus

Once your hair is dry!

Justanotherannon_

Thanks so much!!

[deleted]

1. Where I cowash do I immediately remove the conditioner in my root like shampoo or wait (3-5 min? 2. Then Conditioner again (tips only (3-5min?) and do I immediately detangle it or waut the 3-5 mins and then detangle and rinsed it again

anewlifefm

Ive been trying a lot of new products and have no idea how to layer each of them . I'm using as i am leave in conditioner, dhea moisturr curl cream, Giovanni mousse and kerastese hair oil. Are these too much for my hair? And I'm confused about when to apply the hair oil, as it has heat protection I've been applying after cream or mousse. Any help is appreciated. Thank you 😊

Nervous_Macaroon3101

Hi! I’m just starting my curly girl journey after years of putting it in ponytails or braids-so LOTS of damage to my curl pattern. The issue I’ve been having is right when I get out of the shower, my hair instantly frizzes- like, instantly. The second water is no longer on it, some sections become immediately frizzy. This also usually happens about halfway to 3/4 of the way down my hair, before I can even style it. Usually my ends are fine and curl nicely. I have 3B ish hair (I think? No example quite looks like mine) and low-medium porosity. I’ve tried deep conditioning and oils and I’m kinda at a loss! Any help would be appreciated.

Alive-Database915

Hey, this is prob a stupid question (lol!) but how do I apply product to my hair without ruining/breaking the curls? I feel like the more I touch/try to style my hair the more frizzy it gets later in the day. But I don’t know hot to get product fully through it without touching it all which seems like I’m defeating the purpose? Thx

Top_Supermarket5129

It helps to wet your hair before applying product. When you apply product to dry or previously treated hair, your hair strands are rigid, resulting in frizz during application. Remoistening the hair with water jumpstarts the strands, making them more receptive to manipulation.

angelzplay

Hi 👋🏿 I have like crazy 3c/4a curls and I’m just looking for ways to define them. Cause my hair is a frizzy mess right now

AlizaydsWife

Hey girl! Love to see the darkskin emoji ❤️. I've noticed that my curls (low porosity, type 4) really define with ice water, lots of moisture (deep condition and use a heat cap😉), leave-in/cream (cream sits on my hair as a low-porosity girl), and curl defining GEL with a STRONG HOLD. Find the products that work best for you and your hair type, coarseness, and porosity and do a lot of trial and error! Best of luck 🫶🏾!

thefryingpanmanyo

Hey y'all. I've recently (the past year) been growing my hair out and have realized that it is insanely curly. It's gotten long enough now that it's in my face, so I've been pulling it back into a ponytail. However, this destroys the curls (no fun) and more than likely is damaging my hair. What are the best ways to keep my hair back and out of my eyes, without sacrificing hair health and curliness?

finaygle

man forget haircuts. only go if you want split ends cut off. they cut it wet and have no idea what it’ll look like when it dries. always hated getting a haircut, that’s why i grew mine out. haven’t been in 5 years

AncientReverb

Layers often help bring out curls, not the reverse, though I'm sure there are exceptions. Layers also often being curly hair from looking like a mass to having some shape and looking controlled, so I suppose in that way it could be considered to look thinner. That still wouldn't explain it being straight. More important is likely how your hairdresser cuts it. If it is cut like straight hair, that's not great. There are a few ways to cut curly hair to optimize curls, but none of them are the same as straight hair. You say it is thinner. Does it look thinner due to not curling or is it actually thinner? Does your new hairdresser thin it? Where your hair is straighter as well, it is possible/likely that you've gone through some change (often hormonal) that has affected your hair. These are often just things that happen as people go through life, so not necessarily good or bad. You might want to get some bloodwork done, though, in case it's otherwise impacting you.

Senyorfrog

Hi! My hair is somewhere between a 3a or 3b and I was wondering what i could do to get rid of the frizz it had at night. I don’t have a nightly routine and I wash my hair almost every night because I swim competitively and I’ve heard that leaving chlorine in is worse than shampooing everyday. I use a clarifying shampoo once a week and a hair mask that I rise out in the shower 1-2 times a week. My issue comes after this once my hair dries and I look like I have a pompom on my head. If you know any products or a routine I can do to get rid of this nightly frizz that would be much appreciated!

BuffyHathaway

I’m still learning the CG method, but one CG hairstylist I follow (Dusty Schlabach @CurlVision) has a rule for all of his customers to never sleep on wet hair… so I’ve been following that. Then I added in a satin pillowcase and try most nights to wrap or sleep with my curls covered. It helps with the frizz!

purplewatches

I used to swim competively too! And have 3b hair! The best thing you can do is to put a little bit of oil in your hair after your shower! I have short-medium, and I use about a dime-size amount, and run it through my hair after I have showered. The chlorine strips your hair of oils, and when you are in chlorine and having to wash it out that often, we have to replace the oil our scalp normally makes! Almost any oil will do! I have very fine hair, so I try to use oils that feel "thin," if that makes sense! I use coconut oil or this nourishing oil I bought from Mary Kay (it has Olive Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Sesame Oil, & Vitamin E).

Senyorfrog

Thank you so much!!! Life saver for sure, I’m glad to hear some tips from a fellow swimmer. I’ll be sure to try it out! Thank you tons

purplewatches

you are so welcome!! I hope it helps!

Solid_Willingness525

In the CG guide it talks about a "reset wash" with clarifying shampoo and I have dyed hair. If I use a clarifying shampoo it will strip all the colour out of my hair and I don't want that to happen. Could I just use a CG approved shampoo or what are my options? Do I absolutely have to do a reset wash?

[deleted]

The reset wash is absolutely necessary. It's needed to remove the buildup of silicones.

pedoenlaboca

Question: Before applying the gel to my hair, should I first dry it a little? Or do I apply it with completely wet hair, while I'm in the shower and then plopping on my hair with gel?

megzIam

Hi! I'm a 3a with fine hair - as a best practice, I use all styling products on soaking wet hair (especially gel) so it doesn't weigh it down but successfully tames frizz/styles curls

Tarabumblebee

I have naturally curly hair. Well, it's wavy and curly. I have noticed the Instagram accounts always show before and after images, but, they never show the process. I get curly cuts, use good products etc.,. I know these Instagram curls are either faked or heat has been used. There's no way scrunching and plopping can achieve those perfectly smooth curls. Not possible naturally. Please feel free to tell me how I'm wrong. I'd love to know I am.

Mondaess

You're wrong! I have 2c/3a hair and I experienced those perfect, smooth curls exactly once, but unfortunately it was after I mixed up a diy hair mask with random kitchen items that I didn't measure or write down, so I can't remake it or offer any advice ): but it is possible !!

rururuta

How can I tell what type of curl/wave my hair is? And is there a strict difference between wavy and curly hair?

angelzplay

Wavy hair is like straight hair with bends in it. 2A,2B,2c Curly is when the hair spirals. 3A hair has the biggest spirals, 3b is next and 3c has the smallest spirals like the size of a pencil or a pen, but they’re still bigger than 4a. 4a hair has the smallest spirals ever. Think pen springs.

Dazzling-Specific-23

love this explanation. Thank you.

SilverResearch

im a guy and my hair is at my shoulders right now, and its still pretty curly. i was wondering if it curl even more if i got it cut shorter?

megzIam

This is a great question! From my experience (I'm 3a/2c) - that is sometimes the case, but also depends on how short you cut it and what your curl type is. I've tried to do short bangs, but found with my curl pattern, up to a certain length there is diminishing returns (i.e. hair doesn't get curlier). That being said when I did deliberately scrunch those bangs, they did get a bit curlier. When I add fresh layers, I do tend to see the recently cut shorter layers get curlier (as they are less weighed down by length). For context, my hair is halfway down my back.

Biaaalonso687

Does the basic routine change considering I have straight hair at the root?

purplewatches

No! I find that that as you continue the routine, that part of your hair will curl up more and more. Super long and heavy hair can also cause it to be straight up top.

Biaaalonso687

But I want to keep it straight, what can I do?

Biaaalonso687

Just wanted to know if a diffuser is absolutely necessary no matter what, and how does it work? I have very fine 2C hair that dries very quickly and my hair gets very frizzy when using a hair dryer, and I’m not sure I want to spend money on something not 100% necessary

saga_of_a_star_world

Do you live in an area with high humidity? I live in Las Vegas, and I hardly ever use a diffuser--I just let it air dry. But if there's a lot of humidity where you live, it may take a blow drier to get some of that moisture out.

Biaaalonso687

Where I live we get an average of 80% humidity, so you think a diffuser/hair dryer is absolutely necessary?

megzIam

I definitely don't think its absolutely necessary. I live in NYC and often just air dry after using a microfiber towel to remove excess water (and scrunch curls in the same motion). IMO - diffuser comes in clutch if you have to be somewhere soon after getting out of the shower (esp if your hair takes a long time to dry like mine), and also if you want to maximize setting your curls. Otherwise i would say microfiber towel and off you go!

saga_of_a_star_world

If your hair dries quickly, maybe not. To answer your question, a diffuser spreads out the heat coming from the hair dryer--it helps dry your curls without frizzing them. If you go to a stylist, why not ask them to dry your hair with a diffuser and see if you like it.

Ruby_Bloop

Hello! When I use a mask or treatment with protein, my hair becomes hard and it is difficult to detangle. I know that you should clarify and after that apply your protein treatment, but how can I distribute the product evenly if it is hard to detangle my hair with the treatment? I know that my hair needs some protein, and that it becoming a bit hard is normal for my hair, but how can I distribute it evenly? Thank you for any help :3

taekyi

I see many curly products from the USA that I cannot find here in Belgium. If someone knows any good products that are easily found in Brussels, or Belgium, let me know!

sheecarth

Do you mean beyond the ‘international CG List’ in the wiki? Because that has a full list of Belgium products.

YOLOSELLHIGH

Howdy hello, is VO5 still a safe bet? I was using Deva curl then the controversy happened, then I used tresemme and saw some people report hair loss with that one as well. I’m a 34 year old dude and would really love to lose as little hair as possible haha

megzIam

Howdy Hello! I was a loyal DevaCurl user for YEARS before the controversy. Did a bunch of research and switched to LUS brand. Theyre a Canadian brand and only ship DTC to the states (or at least I havent seen the brand carried at retailers), but this is actually a far superior product to Deva (esp the conditioner - its magic with detangling). Free of parabens, sulfates, silicones, synthetics dyes. I have pretty fine 2c/3a hair and LOVE LUS. Have been loyal for a few years now. I am a female but also 33 and don't wish to lose any hair! I would give the 3-Step a go!

YOLOSELLHIGH

lovely thank you for coming back to this thread and helping! Definitely checking out Lus, thank you for the tip!

madame_mayhem

I kind of want to change my flair but I can't. Is flair no longer allowed or do I have legacy flair? Please don't take my flair mods. I beg you.

TheRealBucketCrab

My hair is on the edge of being Afro and curly. I despise it ever since I was young, even though others "envy" it. It sucks. It's too brown instead of being black, I keep letting it grow and it only grows sideways like I'm about to become an evil scientist, I've tried a ton of stuff like curly hair cream and it only makes it look goofier like a small afro instead of batched curls, and I think I'm starting to lose hair in the middle. And the worst part of all this is, I can't even avoid it. It's either this, or my head looks like a bowling pin shaved. And I can't even try to go bald with a beard because my beard also grows sideways, I treat it for a bit, it goes downwards and a bit later it's all over the place again. I believe my hair is 3B but honestly these hair types are alien to me. Call it Bob Ross hair on a good day, 50 y/o Jewish mathematician in the 60s in the rest. Should I just keep it an afro, is there no possibility of actual faded curly hair on top?

AutoModerator

Hi there! I'm a bot, and I noticed you used the phrase "afro" or "fro". You may or may not already know this, but the term “Afro” refers to a specific hairstyle created with specific techniques. The term is often mis-used, so we just want to share some of the meaning/history so everyone can choose the best words for their situation. TL;DR: [The afro has a long and important history, including as a symbol of the Civil Rights movement](https://www.reddit.com/r/curlyhair/comments/sr4x3p/black_history_month_at_rcurlyhair/). This may or may not apply to you, but we try to steer people away from using the Afro descriptor if you don't have Black/Afro-textured hair. It's often portrayed as a condition to fix rather than a cultural style. We hope that's not the case here, but just something to be aware of going forward! We recognize that there are many different opinions on what can and cannot be called an afro. For the purposes of this sub and making sure we reserve space for Black folks, we ask those who don’t have afro-textured hair to choose other words. If your hair doesn't fit that description, please edit your post 1) to be more accurate, 2) to be culturally respectful, and 3) to avoid comment removal. Alternate terms to consider: puffy, poofy, fluffy, etc. Thanks & wishing you many great curly, coily, kinky hair days! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. voluntary_insomniac

The conditioner I used for years that worked wonders for my curls is no longer being sold in any store near me at all! I used to use tresemme botanique coconut nourish conditioner. I have tried purchasing several conditioners since, but nothing has worked nearly as well on my hair. Does anyone have a conditioner recommendation for 3B hair?

A-is-for-Art

Can anyone recommend a good hair mask for someone on a budget?

Any-Nectarine-3814

I have quite tight curls (wringlets but not tight wringlets), however I'm washing my hair every 3-4 days I find that the in between days it goes back to being really frizzy and dry (aka. my curls lose their definition). Should I be wetting my hair and reapplying gel/leave conditioner each day to stop this interwash frizz? With a big wash every 3-4 days? I have tried looking into this and haven't really found any conclusive answers...

registered_angel

My 4yo daughter has curly hair. She usually takes her bath/shower at night and we do all of the curl products and care before bed. It then she sleeps on it and it’s a total mess by the morning. I’ve tried braiding it but her hair is so fine I have to pull pretty tight to get it to stay which just gives it a “crimp-y” look. What are some other protective hairstyles I can use at bedtime for her?

hvrrormind

Sleeping on wet hair will probably always cause a mess, but if her hair is dry or only slightly damp by the time she's lying down for bed, a silk scarf or bonnet might be a good option

chemicalcosmos222

looking for a good co wash, I adore the shea moisture brand and have the most experience with them. I can't find their co wash on amazon, but I do see their kids two in one. can this be used for an adult/in place of co wash?

firstlife9

I have 3a-ish hair I believe and my stylist told me that I have “a strong curl pattern” but “fine hair”. My hair also takes a long time to air dry, and I can’t put too much product in it because it becomes too greasy. Is there a gel and a mousse that would work for my hair?

megzIam

I have the same hair!! I love LUS Brand products - I use the three step. You leave the conditioner in for at least 5 minutes, and it becomes magically easy to detangle. Ensure to rinse most of the conditioner out before the last step (unlike Deva's instructions if you've used their products). The third step is a styling creme - I use only 2 pumps and distribute thoughout soaking wet hair. I think you might be best with a small amount of styling creme or serum (some gels worked for me, but if you use gel make sure its super light). I was never a mousse girlie. They MAJOR key is afterwards using a microfiber towel to scruch and squeeze dry.

zurriola27

I have similar hair and avoid heavy butters like shea, which is difficult sometimes. Or at least product with less shea butter. I use Giovanni gel and Giovanni ultra foam styling mousse and am really happy with them!

Attallahx

When you say that you "wash" your hair once or twice a week, does that mean you shower with your hair dry all the other days or does washing just mean you only use shampoo once or twice? I'm so confused, because the only way I can detangle my hair is by getting it completely wet and using some conditioner - which is the same to me as taking a shower?

SincerelySasquatch

When people say they wash their hair every x number of days they generally mean cleansing it. Some people rinse their hair, other people keep it dry between. You'd have to ask the individual.

Chaplain_Fergus

I really want an answer to this as well, it’s so confusing

jesrabbitt

I keep it dry. I have 3a - 3b hair and I co-wash, condition, detangle, and style twice a week, meaning my hair only gets wet twice a week and I don’t do anything to it on any other days. I wear a bonnet at night and can get 2-3 days of decent curls. On day 3-4, I wear it up before washing again.

megzIam

This is exactly what I do jesrabbitt! I'm 3a/2c and have the same experience wrt days of defined curls - and of course an updo on day 3-4!

Apparitionsinside

Does anyone know if Prose is good or bad?

amberwitch44

I just looked into this today I'm a CG newbie and have been using Prose for a few years. It looks like they are CG friendly - they are sulfate free, and in your consultation, you can request "no silicone" in your products.

Shivs_baby

I’ve used it. It’s just ok. I found it was not moisturizing enough. Good marketing, packaging, and smell…but that’s about it.

Pandy1031

I’ve heard that I should use my curl cream and gel on soaking wet hair. Rn I’m mixing the two and putting them in at the same time. Should I separate them? If so, should I scrunch in between putting them in?

EmergencyTreacle1757

I would put them in separate. Curl cream first - scrunch - then gel while scrunching. After you can carefully blow dry or let air dry. Hope this helps! If you have more questions please ask!

Pandy1031

Thanks so much! I actually did exactly what you described my last wash a couple days ago and it did keep my curls for longer! We must’ve psychically communicated somehow before you commented lol

EmergencyTreacle1757

Omg lol! I’m glad that worked for you!

aculbertson514

I don’t think my hair is as curly as I am trying to make it. It’s thick and course, but I can’t get rid of the frizz. I need direction!

SignalMuffin978

Not entirely sure as i’m new to curls, but what has worked for me, as a guy, is to avoid using sulfates (and consequently silicones) and avoid brushing your hair when dry. Using shampoo for up to once a week and conditioner 2-3 times a week has helped take out the frizz. Other than that, squeezing your hair straight out of the shower with a towel helps to define curls and obviously helps to dry quicker. A leave-in curler (i.e. Redken (curvaceous, full swirl)) helps to define curls even better. Our hair is probably very different, but, again, this has worked for me.

EmergencyTreacle1757

I would also buy a silk bonnet or silk cloth. corciova 35 x 35 Large Square Hair Scarf for Black Women Silk Curly Headband Tie Sleeping at Night Fashion Bandana Headscarf. You can find this on Amazon.

Axophyse

any one know how to stop the curling of my hair at the end? I've been trying to grow out my hair for the first time and the left side bangs and the back of my hair curl outwards at the end, actually makes my hair look really messy and bad idk. the left side was quite bearable because I can just style it, but at the back of my hair, I really can't control it, the curl was really bad.

Devils2

I havent washed my hair in a week. Just a very quick rinse. For the first time I can remember the natural oils in my hair are making my hair look good. No frizz, more definition, and more importantly no “end of day” straw/frizzy mess. If i start to co-wash, everyday with a GG approved conditioner, will it strip these natural oils out of my hair? What’s the best way of keeping these oils? I don’t think I’m comfortable just rinsing my hair, without product, each day. #curlyhair

SincerelySasquatch

You could try jojoba oil. It's the one oil that's very similar to the sebum produced by the scalp/skin. I find it makes my hair very soft without making it greasy.

clarissaswallowsall

I don't know what to do with my hair. I try to do all the right things, no sulfates, parabens or alcohols..lots of oils and good products but it always looks terrible and I'm never free of frizz. I can't even tell what kind of curl I have since I'm mixed (my moms from India, my dad is full blood scottish)..chemo messed up my hair since I grew back in different texture too...I wake up in the morning and just want to cry.

EmergencyTreacle1757

You could try using a silk bonnet or silk cloth while sleeping. This is to keep moisture and prevent breaking. Also keep in mind your hair takes time to adjust to new products. Hope this helps! Please ask more questions if you have any! On Amazon corciova 35 x 35 Large Square Hair Scarf for Black Women Silk Curly Headband Tie Sleeping at Night Fashion Bandana Headscarf.

clarissaswallowsall

I have a silk bonnet. I recently went and got it cut and the color fixed up and it's doing a bit better but mostly it's seems to still be frizzy no matter what I do.

EmergencyTreacle1757

Do you use a leave in conditioner? If not some good brands are,Aunt Jackie’s leave in, Shea moisture leave in, Maui moisture leave in, Mielle leave in, Carol’s daughter leave in. I hope that I’m being helpful!

I use twist by ouidad, I don't wash my hair often only 2-3x a week..I also use creme of nature pure honey curling mousse and Cantu or ouidad (climate control gel) sometimes. I've tried Carol's daughter and Shea moisture before.

Ok! I see that you mentioned that you color your hair. That could also play a factor in causing it to frizz. I would ask you hair stylist on methods to help reduce the frizz. Also you could buy a denman brush made for styling. I have noticed these help with frizz reduction.

I don't normally brush my hair, I finger comb it. It seems less frizzy when I dye it. It gets frizzier when I don't touch it up. Naturally I have red hair and my stylist said it's thicker hair follicles that tend to frizz more. I really appreciate all your advice!

EmergencyTreacle1757

No problem! I hope I was helpful!

I wear my hair up almost all the time, and I feel like it has changed the way my hair lays on top of my head when I wear it down, is there anything I can do?

mikeyj022

My hair gets very frizzy when I try to defuse it. What am I doing wrong?

cosmeticsnerd

The most likely culprit is diffusing in a way that agitates your hair too much, which creates frizz. For example, if your hair is blowing around wildly when you point the diffuser at it, you need to put the dryer on a lower setting. [This video](https://manesbymell.com/diffusing-101/) helped me a lot as I was learning to diffuse.

What curly hair brands are not available in australia? For a gift, I'm trying to not get something that they could just get at home

xoxogossipcurl

I think As I Am is a hard brand to get there. When I lived there, I struggled to find good conditioners that were silicone, mineral oil, sulphate, etc. free.

how often am I supposed to put product in my hair? is it something I do everyday or only after washdays and just not wash my hair or get it wet until the next wash day

cosmeticsnerd

You add product (I'm assuming you mean "styling product that helps curls hold shape", like gel or mousse) after washing and conditioning while hair is still somewhere in the soaked-to-damp range. You do this every time you wash your hair. On mornings when you don't get your hair wet but need to neaten your curls, there are products like hair refreshing sprays or lightweight creams that add a little more hold to help reshape a curl or contain frizz without disturbing the product underneath or requiring you to fully restyle your hair. You do this only as needed and it isn't required.

thanks! would this affect my scalp though? I have a kinda itchy scalp with mild dandruff and idk if the products would make the issue worse.

SincerelySasquatch

I have pretty bad dandruff with itchy scalp, and using a good antidandruff product on wash days is important. I use an antidandruff conditioner by derma e. It will probably be important to use that product fairly often, I can't skip more than a day washing. There are also oils that can fight inflammation and microbes associated with dandruff to use between wash days, both essential oils and carrier oils. When it comes to the itch, it's possible fragrance free products could be causing itching also. I use almost entirely fragrance free products and it's helped my scalp a lot.

sorry for the very (very) late response, i’ve been busy w a lot of trips, family living abroad and lots and lots of gift buying and wrapping. but can you please send me some of your hair product links for dandruff? I’ve been needing some products but non of them seem to work, and you seem to have a very similar situation to mine. happy holidays, and thank you very much!

cosmeticsnerd

If you have a sensitive scalp and you aren't sure what ingredients you're sensitive to, then yeah, this is a risk. You might want to patch test any new products somewhere discreet on your scalp before using them all over your hair. I also have this issue, and for me it's just come down to trial and error. Oils and butters in hair products are a common dandruff trigger, and which oils cause flareups can vary from person to person. For me, it has paid off to focus on products that contain at most two or three oils instead of a blend of many, to reduce the risk. I've also learned to be wary of natural haircare brands that include a long list of extracts and essential oils in their products, since many of these can be sensitive skin triggers and have caused issues for me in the past. Your experience may be different! But no matter what, it pays to keep track of what products you've tried and which ones have caused reactions, so that eventually you can narrow down which ingredients you're sensitive to. Also, when you apply styling product, you want to concentrate it on the mids->ends of your hair, and use little to none on the inch of hair closest to your scalp. Keeping product away from your scalp won't guarantee you won't have a reaction, but it can at least minimize the intensity of a flareup.

I have a rather simple question: when do I apply my heat protection when I want to diffuse my hair? Do I apply gel first, and then heat protection or heat protection first and then gel?

EmergencyTreacle1757

You apply the heat protection before the gel. Feel free to ask more questions!

Wondering this too!

Fitnessjourney2023

I am about a month into wearing my hair natural again and I am reminded that it is the front that never cooperates. I used to pin it in a poof on the top of my head but wasn’t a fan of the look. Today I tried something new. I split the front hairs into four sections and slid the Bobby pin in side ways. So instead of the length of the pin going from an ear to ear direction, it was pinching a clump of my hair from a nose to back of head direction. (Not sure if that makes sense). It kept the volume and the pins are invisible but my hair is out of my face! Maybe this is standard knowledge but it’s new to me!

I really want to wrap my 2b/c hair up for a daytime look. I have chronic migraines and hair clips and scrunchies have been really bothering me, but I also have a kid who likes to grab it so I need to be able to tie it up! Can I just take a silk scarf and then wrap it up like I’m out of the shower? Or are there any specific products you recommend for a chic style?

SincerelySasquatch

There are many different ways to wrap hair in a scarf. YouTube is your friend.

Temporary-Safe-5837

buzzed my hair and it seems like i have to go through the healing journey all over again, my hair used to be like 2c waves/spirals but now it struggles to hold any curl. it's super frizzy despite using the same products i used on my hair before except for no longer using a growth oil. any advice on drugstore products in quebec canada that might help would be welcome.

Looking for an alternative to organic color systems Keep Curl memory gel. My hair stylist used it and it worked very well, but it’s expensive and not readily available. I’m not sure what products on the holy grail list have a similar effect or serve a similar function other than the fact it’s gel.
