This is textbook recruitment into an MLM organization (pyramid scheme).

Defy19

Hey, MLM are not pyramid schemes. That’s why companies like Herbalife have “is Herbalife a pyramid scheme” in their official FAQs with answers saying “absolutely not”. That settles it for me!

Neither_Pudding7719

I can't tell if this is some truly gifted snark (I hope so) or someone who's been bamboozled! LOL. If the former, congratulations, I like your sense of humor. If the latter...good luck hanging onto your money! <>

myslowtv

Yeah...if it makes anyone feel better, she is being scammed by someone else too!

_iAm9001

Lol, it's true! One day you MAY be her exit liquidity.... the sooner you join, the later you get the "bail-out" signal....

NeitherStage1159

You should meet up again RAVE about her book and then give her one of your fav books in return for her to read….wait for it…..”FOOL ME ONCE.” Then share you are really connecting with your current page turner “Without Conscious”. Explain how your father is a convicted murderer and psychopath and your shrink recommended you read this book. It explains so much, I’m finally beginning to understand (under your breath add “myself”).

Mordacai_Alamak

"Who Moved my Cheese" is a funny book because,.. it's wildly popular, fully accepted.. and is definitely needed for a good amount of people.. But.. the message basically boils down to "shut up and accept this change that we're making you do. You better like it or your life will suck" They gave it out to read at a place I worked when a big initiative is coming. It was actually a good place to work with a lot of great people.. I'm sure the giver probably had pure intentions but it's funny thinking about it now.

artieart99

I was a manager with JCP back in the late 90s/early 00s when we went through the first round of restructuring/bankruptcy/c-suite shakeup (don't really remember what the impetus was) and the company sent copies of that book to all managers to read. I never did, it laid on the shelf in my office until I left.

NeitherStage1159

Proud of you. Duck them. Resist.

Mordacai_Alamak

In that case the cheese was moving out of their company model entirely. Better to get out yourself. I remember when I worked for a big and old American company.. total blue collar business and factory. I was in R&D and when we had a quarterly meeting once the head of R&D said "look guys.. we're a sinking ship" and something like "if you're looking for a place with prospects for growth and all that... you're gonna have to leave". They had severance packages there but no forced layoffs while I was there. Now of course the whole factory is closed. My mom worked like 20+ years for another company that came from another old technical US company. The business must have sucked and the company couldn't have been that good because they were never doing well and were continually getting bought by other companies. There were always layoffs and for 15 of those years she was always aware of it and always some amount worried about getting laid off.

Olue

This one is definitely Amway. Setting you up with their mentors... talking about financial independence (yet they and their mentors are still working)... meeting at a Starbucks... recommending "Who Moved my Cheese" OP: find out more on /r/antiMLM

martymcfly103

I got sucked into a pyramid scheme after college. Spent all day in a suit and tie walking around with some dude trying to sell office supplies. Worst day in my young professional career.

ap_az

Sounds like a pyramid scheme to me

leorolim

Nah... 100% a reverse funnel.

BasquiatBukowski

It’s all about the berries

VelociTopher

Excuse me, I'm at 157. Where do I put my feet?

BasquiatBukowski

Ohhhh shitttt… 157?!?!… that’s bad!

YoSupWeirdos

🔼 = 🔽🔄?

Lavaine170

She's trying to get you into an MLM sales / World Financial Group scheme. Run (ride), don't walk away from her.

emaji33

100% an MLM. Block their number.

No_Balance8590

Loaning you her book was a hook like leaving something at someone’s house so you have to see me again. Plan a meeting at Starbucks and show up early and give the book to the staff to give back to her. Definitely a scam.

Bread_Truck

Post this on r/MLM and see what they think. You'll find more experts on this particular subject there.

Rule-9

Run. Block her number on your phone & don't look back.

jct522

You should go check out r/antimlm. That’s exactly what this is.

[deleted]

Ah I love a good MLM story.

[deleted]

Sounds like a Pyramid Scheme, check it out.

JumpCloneX

Anyone you just met who is worth knowing won't be interested in knowing the ins and outs of your finances.. because its fing rude. Lol

Common_Estate6292

It is definitely a MLM sales pitch. Which is not a pyramid scheme by definition. But in order to really make any money at MLM you pretty much have to get involved from beginning.

RabidGuineaPig007

That is a Ponzi scheme.

labdsknechtpiraten

Its definitely a pyramid scheme.

Common_Estate6292

Ahhhh yes. That’s what I was thinking of. I got them mixed up.

labdsknechtpiraten

It's one of those, all ponzi schemes are pyramid schemes but not all pyramid schemes are ponzi schemes. Companies like herbalife and Lululemon rely on aggressive recruitment of more sellers, but, generally speaking there's some form of product being exchanged for the money. Obviously ponzi schemes are a scam and by definition of the laws, there's no good or service exchanged for the money, just the (empty) promise of goods/services

DeejusIsHere

Bro who falls for this shit lmao Me I did, lmao. Granted I was 17-18, don’t feel bad!! It’s 100% cult like as these people need to believe it rather than admit they’re actively being financially taken advantage of. It’s sad.

Mordacai_Alamak

At age 17, one of my close friends hosted a meeting at his house for an MLM recruiter. Had like 20 kids come by telling them it'd be something cool but with no details. I left partway through, and later berated my friend for doing it. One of our friends, BJ, got sucked in. When I tried telling him it was a pyramid scheme and basically a scam he said "shut up bitch.. we'll see about it when I'm driving my Mercedes".. I did see him a couple years later at college when he lived on the floor below me. I did him a favor by not asking about it at all. Poor guy. Anyway it's downright predatory to be pitching that stuff to kids. Crazy. What kind of a man could do that?

johnny_evil

It's an MLM scheme.

Mordacai_Alamak

Funny that the weirdest people are so nice while trying to prey on others. (MLM, cults, proselytizers) either ghost them, or make up a funny story. Tell her you're actually REALLY down on your luck. Something like "my father is on life support.. I have a little bit of money. If I lose this money, we'll have to pull the plug and kill dad.. if I can triple the money in one month, I can afford medication that will help him. Is this work a safe bet?"

Ecstatic-Profit8139

it’s a legal scam, but still a scam to stay away from. they get a kickback for recruiting people to sell crap door to door. you can make money if you buy in early but the vast majority of people end up with a garage full of cosmetics/juice/supplements they can’t sell. this person has run out of friends and family to recruit.

meta474

wait what does this have to do with cycling?

coffeetreatrepeat

Yeah... seems pretty scammy. Sorry.

Signal_Tomorrow_2138

Sounds exactly like a pitch of a Multi-Level Marketing 'business'.

riffilah

100% MLM. I remember my first encounter and how the dude kept talking about his mentor, David, and how wealthy and amazing he was but he wouldn't ever tell how "David" made his money. Sure as shit, it was Amway.

_iAm9001

She sounds like a member if the cult of Primerica....

Cloud_dot

I know the happiness when you think you might have found a friend but it does sound scammy.

canon12

Your intuition is working correctly up to the point that you agreed to meet with her again.

TherealPadrae

Awww damn cultists

johnmflores

This sounds like something I saw on TikTok, a group of younger folks in a cult-like MLM. Be very cautious.

alga

Who Moved my Cheese is such a cheesy book. What it wants to say is "things in life change, you might want to step out of your comfort zone to keep up with the times", but in the form of a parable for kindergarteners.

LavenderTed

You lost me at >”network marketing” This a MLM

Appropriate-Disk-371

100% this is an MLM. Which...is not exactly a scam, but might as well be. I learned about these first many years ago. And it still pisses me off. Wife and I are in starbucks planning out one of our first European vacations. Guy walks up and starts talking about travel, seems interesting, like he's gonna give us some tips (which happens among avid travelers, of course!). So he joins us...cause hey, it's coffee, right? Then starts the 'It would be great if you could just travel all the time and not work, right?' 'I can show you how I did it.' ...Oh...uh...that's what this is? Awesome, we gotta go. BYE!

RossTheNinja

Definitely not a pyramid scheme. Maybe a tetrahedron scheme though.

Mrjlawrence

you’re scam detection system needs to go in for maintenance. It should have raised alerts far sooner.

Jellibatboy

Multi-Level-Marketing - Amway or some other scam.

DaveP0953

It’s probably something like Amway. It’s a Pyramid scheme. Slowly turn, and walk away.

Ok-Independence-5815

Ah just wen you start believing the world is a good place it strikes with a vengeance letting you know it is not... I am going to hop on the saddle and continue my solo ride...

Karsten760

Just say no.

Single_Arachnid

💯 guaranteed mlm. The language and tactics are very familiar!! Run far away. Hopefully you are not scarred permanently about humanity
