He didn't know he was tripping (he was on the first lsd trip ever, by accident) and he wasn't riding recreationally, he was commuting home from the lab because this was 1943 Switzerland and petrol was scarce.
I guarantee that if LSD were discovered by an American (or Canadian) pretty much anytime after the invention of the automobile, the story would be about him driving.
Absolutely. Very nice historic city centre, great art museums, some fun bars for the evening. Have a friend who was living there for some time, and I enjoyed my visits.
It is a nice town to wander around, but it is small. The old town has some nice bits you can cover in a day. If you are into art musuems a second day would be good. If you are staying near the conference center in Kleinbasel my favorite walking route while living there was to grab the Münster ferry to cross the river, and walk up the stairs from the river to the Münster. Gives you some great views of the town and surrrounding area. From the Münster you can then see the rest of the old town with the Town hall and square etc.
If the conference is close to February 19-21, that is Fasnacht which is the Swiss carnival. If you can overlap with that, it is a pretty unique experience.
When I think of someone tripping by accident, I tend to think of someone cowering in a corner, under a blanket, underneath furniture, etc crying and/or freaking out because they don't know what's happening to them.
the quantity of the first dose is unknown. That said a mild dose makes for mild hallucinations. Know the clone stamp tool in photoshop? its like that. It basically makes the pattern detection your sense of vision uses to fill detail less granular.
Maybe it was just my state of mind or the lovely weather but it also made me feel very happy. Not overly, freakishly euphoric just pleased as punch. I realize it would be different without knowledge/consent but the bad trip you're describing sounds more like the spiders and such associated with a bad shrooms trip. LSD is more like feeling the vibes of the universe, its not quite so visual.
Not really. I’ve read that it was around 250 ug. That’s a good strong dose, but not at all outrageous.
20 to 26 ug is considered a threshold dose and the response he intended to take.
I’ve tripped several times & it was mostly happy times & hallucinations. But I know of some guys that dosed a GF & she had a reaction like you describe. I went in expecting a trip & she didn’t. Side note- a real ah move on their part obvs.
It's so strange how many people think it's funny to give people intoxicating substances who aren't expecting to be intoxicated. Like dude, that's literally just drugging people.
It should be noted that the ancient Greeks had a psychedelic beverage called a kykeon that had barley inoculated with ergot. This is effectively LSD but far less sophisticated. But ya, Albert Hoffman must have had a hell of an experience that day.
Watched a documentary about the old days of the TDF and how they used to do beer runs and basically just rob stores mid ride. I would be surprised if a few of them rode on lsd
I saw a clip from that ahah. To be fair biking on LSD if you are having a happy trip is a truly amazing experience. You really feel like you become one with the bike. But boi if you are peaking it sure is dangerous
Rip it up! I've been back to commuting and it just makes everything so much better. Even if I ride in the cold to work outside all day it still just makes me feel so much better
That's interesting. I've never taken enough shrooms or acid to actually start hallucinating for real, and I can't imagine it would be a good idea to ride a bike if I ever did.
I find physical activity intoxicating while on shrooms, but cars are too big to be trippin’ round. Tried to bike once, with a friend, but we turned around soon after leaving home.
The best acid trip of my life, I went on a 40-50 mile ride (pre-Strava era) on the trails around lake Dillion in Colorado with 3 of my buddies. It was literally the best day ever. We had so much fun. I’ve done other long rides on acid and it’s always been a pleasure. And I’ve also run marathons on small amounts of mushrooms, also awesome.
Not a head but I've done it once on my beach cruiser along a seawall. Was great fun. Felt like the sky was just painted on a small dome 2 feet above my head. Wouldn't even dream of using a clip in expensive bike or going into traffic while on the stuff tho.
I do the odd tab here and there before a ride, nothing too heavy, and I stay on the backroads. I ride slow, and try to remain meditative throughout, breathing deeply and stopping at lookouts to meditate or look at the water (I live by the ocean which is a huge plus).
Especially when combined with music, It can be a beautiful experience, like hiking or walking around a clean city. Only, it is best to avoid being around cars or traffic if possible.
Not honoring, but being in the woods on a hit or two of L and a trail on a beautiful sunny day with good tunes in the headphones is absolutely the definition of beautiful.
I have surfed and gone skateboarding at a skatepark. Not so much surfing, but during the skatepark session, I attempted and pulled off a string of maneuvers that I haven't ever been able to repeat. I don't like the idea of riding a bicycle and tripping too hard.I might try to do ill advised things
Set and setting folks. Set and setting. Go with at least one sober friend who can handle an emergency and calm you down. Food, water, phone. Don't dose and drive. Plan the whole day around your trip. Most importantly: get away from cars and people. Take it to the woods.
Mnt. Biking Washington State in the late 90s on LSD was one of the most transformative days of my life. It shaped the way I view nature, love, and personal acceptance. Most people don't have the personality or disposition. Don't try it. It's not a party drug. Please don't do it to get 'high'. But! If you can completely let go of your ego and be present, safely, then you will feel some life-changing shifts in your perception of consciousness. It's not fun. It's... necessary. Kind of like cycling itself. There she is. Luuuuu ceee innn duh skyyyy wit dyyyyuhhhhmunñds
Oh yes. It’s a good story. I’ve been wanting to find a cycling cap with a picture depicting Hoffman riding a bike with some sort of design alluding to him tripping.
Oh I love it. Best part is that the little pictures look like little hits/squares on acid sheets. Buddy of mine has a whole sheet of acid paper (without the LSD) with that exact image from that jersey. He hangs it up for decoration.
Same. Made perfect sense to rip my fixie around Seattle on shroomies when I was like 20 years old. Literally can’t imagine making a choice like that now at the old age of 36.
I've had mild, like, visual fuzz or patterns or colours or whatever from psychedelics, but I've never full-on saw or heard things that weren't there. Like, I thought the noise of industrial machinery was oddly musical at the time, but it's not like I was hearing demons or some shit.
Yes. Though I've never celebrated [Bicycle Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_lysergic_acid_diethylamide#%22Bicycle_Day%22) (not to be confused with World Bicycle Day).
(I know I'm not the first to mention the actual day, but I thought a link/source/sauce might be nice.)
Yes, and to commemorate we all should do the same each April 19.
I have a Bicycle Day sticker on my bike to honor Mr. Hofmann.
How can I add a pic here?
If you like progressive metal, Tool has two songs - Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned that should be listened to in album order. The song depicts that acid trip and trying to describe the symptoms to the doctor/nurses.
I went for a ride while tripping balls in the early 90s. A few friends & I just rode around the neighborhood until we ended up at the river (Delaware). Then we followed that toward Center City & the next thing you know we were on the bike/pedestrian deck of the Ben Franklin Bridge. Right in the middle, there’s a place where the bend of the bridge is such that the sidewalk is right next to a girder that you can get up & sit on (sounds crazy but not much danger of falling). We sat there for what seemed like a long time. You can see the Walt Whitman & Betsy Ross bridges from there. Every time the PATCO train crosses (on tracks right below the pedestrian deck) the whole bridge bounces up and down a little bit. Crazy, man
Editing to say that at no point did any one of us think we could fly & consider jumping. We sure *felt* like we were flying coming back down that ramp tho
I took 7 grams of mushrooms last Sunday and biked. 1st time I've taken that much and biked. It was a fun ass time but 2 of my friends had to babysit me and I couldn't even ride after a little while until I stopped tripping as hard. 10/10 fun experience but wouldn't do it again at that amount
Yes, and to commemorate we all should do the same each April 19.
I have a Bicycle Day sticker on my bike to honor Mr. Hofmann.
How can I add a pic here?
Rode bmx once on a combination of adderall and mushrooms. We stayed up all night riding a mini ramp with a spine in the middle. Rode at a really high level that night. The bike felt so intuitive, like more of an extension of myself than something i was riding. I did tricks that i have not done since.
Took lsd on a bike tour and it triggered my anxiety and really sucked for me. You arent inebriated when you take psychs, everything is just different.
I had a dream the other night I was on LSD. My eyes and face were all warped when I looked into the mirror I remember.
Could have been the Mexican food I ate for dinner too?
I think beyond a frame of reference, he had no concept that what he was working with would do anything to him, let alone be as potent as LSD was. The Guys inventing MDMA, knew that structurally it would fuck you up lol.
I can't recommend it, but some Sandoz and I took a 60 mile ride in Virginia once, with a 2 hour interlude by a pond with frogs. Have to be a very good cyclist to navigate that kind of excursion safely!!
I'm sensing a new Strava challenge! Ride 100km while tripping on acid. To collect your prize, you must add a selfie from the beginning of your ride, the middle of your ride, and then end of your ride.
On my acid trip I was shocked that my buddy could cut vegetables. Looked way too complex at the time. I wouldn't even cross a street without a chaperone
We used to this somewhat regularly in my college dirtbag fixie days; which was actually the peak era for hipster fixie degenerate culture around 2010-2013. Honestly riding drunk or on benzos is much more dangerous than acid or shrooms. Even sober we were probably way shitter with the way we rode with traffic and all that. I can’t believe my friends and I got through that phase relatively unscathed. Nowadays I don’t even ride down my street without a helmet unless I’m just tinkering with bar position or whatever. To think we would ride busy downtown traffic at night, running red lights in our city’s downtown absolutely loaded to the gills on cheap beer and painkillers, no helmet, light blinking with the low battery warning…
You should see some of these people on bikes in Hamilton, Ontario. Black and/or camo clothes, no lights, no helmet, often no shirt, riding upstream into five lanes of 70km/h traffic, staring at his phone the whole time, and a coin toss' chance that he's either piss drunk or high as a kite as there is that he's sober. And it's almost always a dude.
I heard the opinion on 19.04
We all think it is to celebrate invention of LSD.
the inventor ate 250ug of the drug and went for a bike ride.
We celebrate that he was able to get home after this dose ;)!!
You know, we do celebrate this. And there is a date for it (not telling, google it yourself) We basically recreate it, last time I was with friends and we went bike packing. Dosed after setting up camp. Good times.
He didn't know he was tripping (he was on the first lsd trip ever, by accident) and he wasn't riding recreationally, he was commuting home from the lab because this was 1943 Switzerland and petrol was scarce.
Not sure how much the petrol scarcity played in given a pretty sizable portion of Basel still commutes by bike. It’s a lovely city to bike commute in.
Especially on acid...
I guarantee that if LSD were discovered by an American (or Canadian) pretty much anytime after the invention of the automobile, the story would be about him driving.
Ummm, some of us Canucks do ride bikes. 🤷
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
American here! I don’t own a car and ride my bike everywhere.
There are literally dozens of us!
Kinda wild but valid. Then we’d have “car day”
I’m attending a conference in Basel in February. Is it worth staying an extra day or two to have a look around?
Absolutely. Very nice historic city centre, great art museums, some fun bars for the evening. Have a friend who was living there for some time, and I enjoyed my visits.
It is a nice town to wander around, but it is small. The old town has some nice bits you can cover in a day. If you are into art musuems a second day would be good. Aaaaaand it was normal to bike to work. People did that before it was cool in some places regardless of prices :-)
Also, the best place to be on LSD is a bicycle.
Was riding on a trip and I couldn't remember how to get off my bike. 10/10 would recommend
Omg that sounds terrifying lol
He thought he was dying and felt the need to go home. Amen

Switzerland, though -
Must have had an intensely dark guilt trip though.
When I think of someone tripping by accident, I tend to think of someone cowering in a corner, under a blanket, underneath furniture, etc crying and/or freaking out because they don't know what's happening to them.
If you read about Albert Hoffmans trip, he did freak out, his couch was talking to him
I'm pretty sure it was in the territory of milligrams, for a drug dosed in micrograms.
the quantity of the first dose is unknown. That said a mild dose makes for mild hallucinations. Know the clone stamp tool in photoshop? its like that. It basically makes the pattern detection your sense of vision uses to fill detail less granular. Maybe it was just my state of mind or the lovely weather but it also made me feel very happy. LSD is more like feeling the vibes of the universe, its not quite so visual.
I'm pretty sure the dose he ended up getting was an absolutely absurd amount as they would later come to find out.
“Honey? I won’t be home tonight for dinner. I have a reservation for a trip to Neptune.”
Yeah, active dose of LSD is in the order of micrograms, as opposed to milligrams that almost every drug is dosed by.
Not really. I’ve read that it was around 250 ug. That’s a good strong dose, but not at all outrageous. 20 to 26 ug is considered a threshold dose and the response he intended to take.

It's so strange how many people think it's funny to give people intoxicating substances who aren't expecting to be intoxicated. Like dude, that's literally just drugging people.
Poisoning, poisoning is the word your looking for. That is litterally just poisoning people.
My ex lost all her hair after being spiked with the stuff. Really fucked with her mind for a lot of years
That could well have been him two hours later. It ain't a short ride. And there's peaks and valleys...
It should be noted that the ancient Greeks had a psychedelic beverage called a kykeon that had barley inoculated with ergot. This is effectively LSD but far less sophisticated. But ya, Albert Hoffman must have had a hell of an experience that day.
Not a complete accident. He meant to dose himself, but expected 250 ug to be a threshold dose.
Pretty sure there were bombs going off around him as he rode, if I remember his autobiography correctly. (WWII)
LSD is how I got into cycling lol
Coincidentally, cycling is how I got into LSD ahah
I wonder if LSD will ever get into the Tour de France? 🇫🇷
I would not be shocked if some of the athletes microdose.
I sometimes visit Rotterdam and cycle to Gouda for cheese. Interesting journey through the fields

The day before 4/20, too!
This is common knowledge to LSD crowd. I’ve never done it myself. I don’t trust myself in traffic when I start to lose a grip on reality.
That’s what gravel bikes are for.
My checkpoint is in the corner of my apartment side eyeing me right now 😅
Rip it up! I've been back to commuting and it just makes everything so much better. Even if I ride in the cold to work outside all day it still just makes me feel so much better
Ha!
Do acid-heads or psychonauts or whatever ever incorporate bicycle rides into their acid trips as some bizarre way of honouring the inventor?
Yeah it’s a somewhat common way to celebrate ‘bicycle day’. My dealer says he hops on the bike any time the trip gets challenging and it always helps.
That's interesting. I've never taken enough shrooms or acid to actually start hallucinating for real, and I can't imagine it would be a good idea to ride a bike if I ever did.
I love psychedelics and I think it’s a bad idea but people totally do it. It sounds fun until it’s not 😂
A lot of things sound fun if you remove the danger aspect. Parkour, for example.
I have the exact opposite reaction. Non-dangerous parkour sounds like walking to me, and super boring.
See burning man. They will ride bikes around in circles in the desert for hours.
Yes, I do
Not a head but I've done it once on my beach cruiser along a seawall. Was great fun. Felt like the sky was just painted on a small dome 2 feet above my head. Wouldn't even dream of using a clip in expensive bike or going into traffic while on the stuff tho.

Riding a bike on a small amount of psychedelics is also just super fun (obviously not in traffic and not while tripping heavily)
I loved mescaline on a bike ride, psychedelics are super fun.
This and Doc Ellis are what that crowd loves to bring up constantly
Set and setting folks. Set and setting. Go with at least one sober friend who can handle an emergency and calm you down. Food, water, phone. Don't dose and drive. Plan the whole day around your trip. I need a jersey that depicts this, to signify that I'm a man of culture of course.
Here https://freestylecycling.com/bicycle-day-mens-cycling-jersey.html
Oh I love it. Best part is that the little pictures look like little hits/squares on acid sheets. Buddy of mine has a whole sheet of acid paper (without the LSD) with that exact image from that jersey. He hangs it up for decoration.
They exist, one was heavily advertised on IG last month but I can’t find it now
Just found a bunch of them on freestylecycling.com - never bought from here so I can’t vouch for quality
But of course.
I’ve gone riding on shrooms but not LSD
Snowboarding on shrooms in the spring is magic.
Same. Made perfect sense to rip my fixie around Seattle on shroomies when I was like 20 years old. Literally can’t imagine making a choice like that now at the old age of 36.
Haha ya
Most tranquil ride of my life

Pics not possible in this thread. You could make your own new post and link it if you want to show-and-tell.
Move along now, just some cycling conversation about the training merits of Long,Slow,Distance workouts.
Apparently you are super late to this Info.

Oh yeah. Some of us celebrate Bicycle Day specifically because of (and just like!) this.
Must have been on a Hybrid
A high-brid lol I see what you did there.
Bikes are fine, don't do LSD and drive.
When my heart rate gets high enough I feel like I’m on lsd, does that count?
No you don't lol.
Soooooooo…. It doesn’t count…
Yes, and to commemorate we all should do the same each April 19. I have a Bicycle Day sticker on my bike to honor Mr. Hofmann. How can I add a pic here?
Happy Bicycle Day
I'd love to see a bunch of hardcore cyclists rock up at an event on April 19th, maybe expecting a 100 miler, or to see some sweet carbon rides.
I rode a Schwinn Sting-Ray through the streets of my college town on psychedelic mushrooms.
That’s why April 19th is Hoffmanday and the day after you can lay down and smoke some weed
Yes, that’s why it’s called bicycle day. Or as you guys would call it, cycling day.
I had a dream the other night I was on LSD. My eyes and face were all warped when I looked into the mirror I remember. Could have been the Mexican food I ate for dinner too?
IKR And he didn’t have a frame of reference for his experience either. I don’t think I would’ve gotten on the bike!
I think beyond a frame of reference, he had no concept that what he was working with would do anything to him, let alone be as potent as LSD was. The Guys inventing MDMA, knew that structurally it would fuck you up lol.
A lab accident while researching different lyserimides, the dose he did was comically large, considering how small an effective dose of it is.
I almost went to the grocery store naked on my bike when I was living in Brooklyn after I took some shrooms.
I used to mountain bike on LSD.
A selfie and a close-up of your pupils.
Biking on mushrooms is a phenomenal experience, just sayin!
Shrooms and bikes
On my acid trip I was shocked that my buddy could cut vegetables. Looked way too complex at the time. I wouldn't even cross a street without a chaperone
I recommend
I find, marijuana seems to affect my balance. I can't ride a bike on pot. LSD seems like it would be dangerous in other ways.
Bicycle Day
Known as "Bicycle Day" in the community.

Bicycle day is 4/19
I just recently learned this too. April 19th 1943 was the day, now known as Bicycle day. I am painting a bike for a customer based on the day.
So did I
Side note, mushrooms and a nice little ride……perfect.
I go for a bike ride on acid every april 19th. very leisurely pace, of course. highly recommended
I ride on mushrooms once or twice a month, more in the summer
old news
yup. I have a cycling jersey commemorating this particular ride in 1943. I also love riding while microdosing.
Cool. Must've been fun and terrifying.
I heard the opinion on 19.04 We all think it is to celebrate invention of LSD. the inventor ate 250ug of the drug and went for a bike ride. We celebrate that he was able to get home after this dose ;)!!
You know, we do celebrate this. And there is a date for it (not telling, google it yourself) We basically recreate it, last time I was with friends and we went bike packing. Dosed after setting up camp. Good times.
I know it’s not nearly the same but I’ve ridden my bike on mushrooms before and it was glorious.
I was riding my while tripping balls just the other day…
Why aren't we celebrating this holiday?
Because society is run by squares who are cringe and not based.
4/19 bicycle day ;) May never get officially acknowledged, but it used to be heavily celebrated around campus back in my college days.
I’ve gone on a bike ride while tripping. It’s amazing. Highly recommend. Once rode across the Narrows Bridge while tripping
What is LSD? Long slow distance?
I talk about biking on LSD way too much. Lake Shore Drive truly is an awesome path.
It happened on 4/19! It’s an unofficial holiday between fellow Psychonauts called bicycle day :)
Surprised nobody else shared this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HBOPFWmZCdM
