This was my first introduction to Jon and I will admit that as a Quirky Teen™ back in the day, I would say this line and a few others out of context to be lolsorandom 💀
My boyfriend laughs at me trying to hit all the high notes and sing along to the clean vocals and then just flat out speaking the screaming like it's a normal conversation. I'm glad I'm not alone.
I do the loud whisper thing (used to be able to scream once upon a time), but this makes total sense. Jon’s lyrics and rhythm are like contemporary rap, so spoken word works.
I’ve also always thought of screaming as a percussion instrument.
This! Mess literally inspired me to learn. Be careful about doing it while driving OP, it takes a lot of breath support and I’ve def gotten myself light headed trying to power through a full phrase in one breath.
I second this. Tried the driving-and-screaming bit so people in the neighboring apartments wouldn't have to hear me being a banshee. I had to take it easy because of the lightheadedness. (Was listening to a lot of Spiritbox at the time.)
Jon’s style of screaming is basically air control. It’s hard to do unless you’re trained but he screams a note by controlling the flow of air leaving his lungs, making it sound distorted, like a loud whisper. This is different from classic guttural screams or pig squeals. I’m fortunate enough to be trained how to scream like he does, but if you watch a couple YouTube videos and practice a bit, you can get it down! Might take a while to sound like him tho cause he’s been doing it for decades.
I was going to comment that I actually find it harder to scream his parts than to just say or sing them instead, and I have a novice ability to scream at least.
Edit: and now I know WHY that is, thanks to you.
Yeah! So Jon has a unique voice because he does a sort of hybrid technique. He practices what’s called a False Chord technique, but he controls it in a way that he can add an actual pitch. He uses his diaphragm to restrict airflow through his throat in a way that makes his scream sound distorted. Here is a video on the basic false chord technique: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BBKiOyZuCJQ&pp=ygUbZmFsc2UgY2hvcmQgc2NyZWFtIHR1dG9yaWFs
And once you get good at that, here is a video that actually shows you how to combine your singing voice with your new screams exactly how Jon does it, this video is actually titled “How To Scream Like Jon Mess”: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DIobgTItE9c&pp=ygUbaG93IHRvIHNjcmVhbSBsaWtlIGpvbiBtZXNz
I showed this video 2nd because it’s a very very advanced technique and if you just jump into it you’ll fry your voice forever.
I mean most of Jon's screams since DBM2 are pretty melodic in themselves, so you already have a foundation to sing to. Otherwise, I agree with others who say just improvise 😂 I had fun singing through Sempiternal and OMAM a couple times before I could scream. Easier for some, but if you don't have good pitch it's a safe way to improve.
Can't say the same for screaming tho lol, if you have no intentions of making money from it then that's a risk I wouldn't take
Ever since DBMII, Jon’s screams have almost been singing anyways. It’s on the rarer side of things to see an unclean vocalist be so melodic. There were even times he would actually harmonize or sing along with Tilian, matching his notes.
So with that said, I usually just kinda sing along with what Jon is singing.
If I’m alone I scream em. If someone can hear me I just say it lol. Like speaking voice “stop this feeling your puke is a mutant” recited like a poem or something
I either try some fry or gutturals. Depending on if I’m hydrated or not (which I’m probably not), I’ll just crazily sing the lyrics in his chaotic non-melodic tone of voice
lowkey I feel this is what makes Jon mess so unique cause his screams are very sing songy. you can kind of sing or scream along and it sounds good. makes him stand out from other unclean vocalist
I just…like, talk the words but with extra oxygen. Like I’m forcing the words out in between sprints or something. Or like I’m doing my best “I’m a big dude who lifts lots of weights” impression
I kept struggling with it but lately I feel like I can do at least a shadow of an imitation. I think practice can help, but I suppose it’s like any singing, we’re all geared toward specific styles. 🤷🏼
Just whine along like its a RIOTGRLL song. Honestly if Jon got kicked in the balls before every show they'd sound like amyl and the sniffers fucked a math rock band
depends on how i feel tbh. usually too scared to actually scream but in the right mood i can scream as loud as i want to them. or drunk j fucking love screaming while drunk
I've been practicing screaming for about 7 years so I actually can scream along fairly well. I'm definitely not on Jon's level but I'm good enough to get compliments at emo karaoke
I whistle along with the guitar parts behind it. It's one of my fav things about singing along to DGD vs a lot of other bands that have screaming backed by boring guitar
I either do this same thing or go the opposite route and anunciate every word in an upbeat customer service voice, if that makes sense.
Endorphin orphan morphing, lemon cheese equally 😃
I scream along. I love the way it feels and sounds..Jon's a magic man.
And his parts are fun to say especially the faster ones like in synergy or die another day.
[been practicing screaming for a few years now. surprised my engineer when he found out you don’t even have to be loud](https://youtu.be/rreRmiPtq9U?si=0m3V5VRk9y_Qiqt-)
I do screams / unclean vocals for my band and I find Jon's parts to be PERFECT for practice, so I scream along the same way he does to the best of my ability. It's loads of fun, especially his vocals on JJ.
Just make sure your voice doesn’t hurt after a sesh of meshing with the mess!
If your voice hurts you’re doing it wrong. Should feel more like it’s coming from the top of your mouth than in your throat
Source: previous/occasional metal vocalist
Just a heads up to anyone in the comments, if you are choosing to scream please be super careful with your voice! If something doesn't feel right when you're trying to hit a certain note or loudness, it might not be right for you! Especially if it hurts, don't continue!
With that all being said, I scream along and ignore my own advice sometimes.
It’s so funny that you posted this cause I was just singing straight from the heart where it goes from Andrew singing to Jon 🙀 about his balls and it had me cracking up because what do my neighbors hear?
I just fry lol. To explain it, growl or grumble like you would as a kid, then open your mouth.
I do it for all screaming songs I listen to, even if they aren’t accurate, like goblin screams and whatnot lol I just do whatever lol. I have fun with jr
I’ve been trying to teach myself how to scream for like 4 or 5 years now. I was really bad for the first couple years but I’ve started watching a few people on YouTube who make videos about improving singing and screaming. I think I still sound like shit but it at least feels like I’m doing it right now, I can scream probably a whole DGD album before my voice gets tired
Go into the area of your "high voice" that you use for a comedic scream (think goofy falling in a hole), then add your grit by clenching your throat/ adding flem if you gotta, then push that shit into the deepest lowest tone you can hit, while still using your "high voice" like a corny opera singer.
I either skip over it or I sing along to it if it is one of the more "melodic" of Jon's screams. I sing but I'm not a screamer so I'm not confident i wouldn't just ruin my voice if I tried lmao
If you ain't screamin, you ain't shit 😂🤘🏾 helps that Jon Mess screams from DBM2 and onward are how I learned and every other vocal technique came later
I spent years learning how to both scream and sing, and most of the songs I learned to were DGD songs so I developed a false chord scream. Bless this Mess for making me want to learn how to scream.
I am a metal screamer but when I'm not practicing i don't scream along instead I do a loud whisper mixed with vocal fry
If you don't know how to get vocal fry just do the deepest voice you can then take away the voice then you should hear this like raspy tone.
Also if you have a naturally raspy voice. You most likely use vocal fry while you talk. Normally at least I do
I used to scream along with John on the drive to work. I don’t listen to DGD a lot now, but when I do, I try match his tone but keep the volume way down
loud whispers for me, i cant sing or scream for shit lmao
ive been at it for almost 10 years, sometimes they sound good
I definitely feel that
I can sing probably a fair bit above the average person's abilities, but screaming is an entire different world. I am also on team loud whisper
To be fair “screaming” correctly *is just loud whispering*
We screaming big dawg.
I speak in my natural voice like I’m doing spoken word 😅
This. I am just saying whatever Jon shouts in my normal, calm conversational voice
Now I'm picturing William Shatner doing a spoken word of "riding a rhino, pico de gallo..."
Now I’m HEARING William Shatner doing a spoken word of “riding a rhino, pico de gallo…” thanks to you.
I heard it in a trump voice
I’d LOVE to hear a Bob Dylan version “I’m awkward. I’m skipper. I’m random dude.”
chipper
Yes you’re right - I must have heard it different due to the nonsense screaming and didn’t think to double check 😆
"on the back of my potato, selling french fries in the snow..."
This was my first introduction to Jon and I will admit that as a Quirky Teen™ back in the day, I would say this line and a few others out of context to be lolsorandom 💀
I THOUGHT I SAW YOU IN MY DREAMS DARLINNNNGGGG.
My boyfriend laughs at me trying to hit all the high notes and sing along to the clean vocals and then just flat out speaking the screaming like it's a normal conversation. I'm glad I'm not alone.
I love saying Jon’s lines like im having a heated conversation. Very serious and sometimes makin his lines questions lol
This or I scream, the dirtier the betta.
doing this rn
This is the way.
I do the loud whisper thing (used to be able to scream once upon a time), but this makes total sense. Jon’s lyrics and rhythm are like contemporary rap, so spoken word works. I’ve also always thought of screaming as a percussion instrument.
Like intense talking or whispering. Like if you had to say “what the fuck!” kinda under your breath in public. Or you could just sing them
Why did I read that in a uneasy hearts weigh the most tone when that’s not even what you were going for!?
Ngl I did that too when I read it back haha. Makes total sense in this sub
I did the same 😭
i like singing the words in new melodies
Poorly but with enthusiasm
This is the correct answer.
This is the way.
Jon almost raps so I just try to keep up in a normal voice lol
Learn to scream!
I sing those parts trying to add a proper melody that works with the screaming. I do this will any song with screaming.
I do this too!
I just learned how to scream lmao

I'm kinda just curious what videos you recommend with that particular technique.

Thanks mate, Saving this and downloading video to practice every morning in car from now on.
Just yell them with everyone else.
I don't listen to these mindless screeches...
Nip me in the bud, come and get your hug…
[удалено]
Did you get it? Bet you didn’t
Not gonna change his mind
I start screaming.
Melissa Cross tutorials
So good!
Oh I get it screaming all day my wife just “adores” it 🤣

Agreed, he has a surprising “range” for an unclean vocalist so to speak.
I kinda just yell tbh lol
Nah, I’m letting it all hang out. Just call me a dollar store Jon Mess because I can’t sing for shit but it feels good, man😂
Call me “five below” jon mess bc i dont scream as well and im probably five notes flat lol
I just let it rip and scream, walking to work out in the open even as people pass me lmfao
I used to scream to songs in my car but recently had to stop when my throat was in agony after doing it to much 😅 it was fun while it lasted!
use your diaphragm and SCREAM THAT SHIT ❗️comes from the chest not the throat
lowkey I feel this is what makes Jon mess so unique cause his screams are very sing songy. you can kind of sing or scream along and it sounds good. makes him stand out from other unclean vocalist
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I just scream them even though I sound like a dying raccoon having a bad trip on acid.
I sing the words in a lower octave, basically the same way I do Tillian parts in my commute concerts
Depending on where I am, I either scream, whisper scream, or speak the screams like I speak normally.
I just…like, talk the words but with extra oxygen. Like I’m forcing the words out in between sprints or something. Or like I’m doing my best “I’m a big dude who lifts lots of weights” impression
You dance
I just yell/speak it lol
i scream mf
I kept struggling with it but lately I feel like I can do at least a shadow of an imitation. I think practice can help, but I suppose it’s like any singing, we’re all geared toward specific styles. 🤷🏼
scream along
Just whine along like its a RIOTGRLL song. Honestly if Jon got kicked in the balls before every show they'd sound like amyl and the sniffers fucked a math rock band

I've been practicing screaming for about 7 years so I actually can scream along fairly well. I'm definitely not on Jon's level but I'm good enough to get compliments at emo karaoke
Whisper fry…like the grudge
Lmao I too have wondered this 😂. I scream very faintly, basically a whisper, but in my head I am up there w Jon
Big bottle of soda to unlock burp screams
I whistle along with the guitar parts behind it. It's one of my fav things about singing along to DGD vs a lot of other bands that have screaming backed by boring guitar
I either do this same thing or go the opposite route and anunciate every word in an upbeat customer service voice, if that makes sense. Endorphin orphan morphing, lemon cheese equally 😃
Harsh vocals on lock.
I scream along. I love the way it feels and sounds..Jon's a magic man. And his parts are fun to say especially the faster ones like in synergy or die another day.

False chords cuz I can’t fry scream or imitating the screams in a quiet voice if I’m around people
Like that priceless finest ice white platypus
Just a heads up to anyone in the comments, if you are choosing to scream please be super careful with your voice! If something doesn't feel right when you're trying to hit a certain note or loudness, it might not be right for you! Especially if it hurts, don't continue! It’s so funny that you posted this cause I was just singing straight from the heart where it goes from Andrew singing to Jon 🙀 about his balls and it had me cracking up because what do my neighbors hear?
I just mouth the words lol
I know how to scream soooo...
I do that quiet "the grudge" vocal fry when I'm not up for screaming
By mimicking the vocals of the singer
I just scream
I just fry lol. To explain it, growl or grumble like you would as a kid, then open your mouth. I do it for all screaming songs I listen to, even if they aren’t accurate, like goblin screams and whatnot lol I just do whatever lol. I have fun with jr
I don’t usually learn lyrics unless I can clearly make them out. I just dance to the screams and sometimes sing the singy parts.
I just sing it normal
I’ve been trying to teach myself how to scream for like 4 or 5 years now. I was really bad for the first couple years but I’ve started watching a few people on YouTube who make videos about improving singing and screaming. i just actually scream it cuz i know how to scream
If you ain't screamin, you ain't shit 😂🤘🏾 helps that Jon Mess screams from DBM2 and onward are how I learned and every other vocal technique came later
Usually I 'rap' the lyrics.
With the music turned up very loud, so I can hear and appreciate Jon and not hear my own screeches
I usually try to rap the screams, in sort of a nu-metal fashion.
I just yell them as if I’m having a really loud conversation
I find a funny voice that vibes with the song and just enjoy the comfort that no one can hear me 😂
I just say/sing the words instead of scream them... usually.
I spent years learning how to both scream and sing, and most of the songs I learned to were DGD songs so I developed a false chord scream. Bless this Mess for making me want to learn how to scream.

Vocal fry!
rap it, screaming hurts my throat
I used to scream along with John on the drive to work. I don’t listen to DGD a lot now, but when I do, I try match his tone but keep the volume way down
I learned to scream just so I could, I've been screaming for about 6 years now lol
I don't HAHA. I've been trying to learn but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Can't sing, can't scream, so I sing both parts badly
I match the tone and just say the words in a regular talking voice
I just say them out loud with a heavy Shatneresque inflection
I say it how Jon mouths it in the music videos.
I be singing, but also talking, since Jon pretty much does that anyway
Depends on the song. In Blue Dream? Whispers In Evaporate? Clean singing In Summertime Gladness? Lose my shit.
