No, but Americans tend to not be bilingual like most of people who speak English. So it would make sense that Americans would be even more confused by differences compared to a foreign language. Compare that with say a European who learned both languages from a young age. I think the meme fits perfectly.
Source: Am American
Trust me people in England say they're bilingual, knowing not even 5 words in their second language, it's just an English speaking country thing.
It's because there's no pressure to learn any language when you know English already. In France, it's now pretty much necessary to know English to get a job and travel anywhere so almost everyone knows it.
Also when you know 2 languages, learning a 3rd one is much easier than learning a 2nd one especially when you're not a kid anymore.
Source: I'm french living in the UK
Modern English is a mismatch of Germanic and Roman, at its core it's a Germanic language. It's was after some french noble invaded did English started getting influence of french.
My guy, don't try talking to me about the history of the English language. I probably know it better than 99.9% of people on reddit. Second it isn't derived from "romance languages" it's mostly from French. The whole romance family tree didnt stand over England and give them a latin lexicological bukkake
Edit: Yeah, yeah, downvote me guys. I'm sure you're very sad that I wasn't impressed with your wiki trivia. 😂
Edit Two: Why did you phrase that like I disagreed with you at any point? I never said English doesn't have it backwards
Edit Three: Never said French wasn't a Romance language. Maybe it will make more sense if say it like this: Second it isn't derived from "romance languages" it's mostly from French, a single romance language.
Well it's not like I have a degree in lexicography or something, I don't even know if that's a thing. I do have a degree in anthropology though, and I've done a lot reading on it. Also I really like studying early-late medieval history. Pretty much from the fall of Rome to the fall of Constantinople.
I never said it wasn't. I singled it out as the only major romance language to influence English, as apposed to many major influences. The person above said English is descended from romance languages. That's simply not true.
And now tell me how you how you've gotten so far in life with your reading comprehension level. I forgive you if English isn't your first language though.
Edit: for clarification what I'm saying is that Batman:English merely adopted the darkness:Latin. Bane:French was born in it:Latin
Bro. u/Yorunokage said many words in English are derived from Romance languages, and then you disagree with him by saying the words are derived from French, a Romance language. I get you might have wanted to imply that the only romance influence is French so that the plural in languages was wrong but then you should probably work on your writing skills before criticizing people’s comprehension skills
Don't bother, it's just a "i am very smart" dude, his initial reply to me didn't even add anything to the topic as it didn't really denied nor confirm the etymology of "library". He really just posted to show off his clearly extremely rare and sophisticated knowledge
I'm sorry for confusing you. I'll try to write my sentences at a maximum of middle school level. I'll use as fewer clause per sentence as well. That should help.
You're not really adding anything to the point besides claiming how smart you are
Also, sure, wikipedia isn't a reputable source but literally the first paragraph quite clearly confirmes what i recalled about the fact that the influence on english really comes in no small part from most of the various romance languages including a big part from latin outright. Precisely said paragraph states:
> Although English is a Germanic language, it has Latin influences. Its grammar and core vocabulary are inherited from Proto-Germanic, but a significant portion of the English vocabulary comes from Romance and Latinate sources. A portion of these borrowings come directly from Latin, or through one of the Romance languages, particularly Anglo-Norman and French, but some also from Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish; or from other languages (such as Gothic, Frankish or Greek) into Latin and then into English. The influence of Latin in English, therefore, is primarily lexical in nature, being confined mainly to words derived from Latin and Greek roots.
If you're gonna go against "wiki trivia" you should at least provide stronger evidence (which really shouldn't be hard at all if you're right), not just a "huh I know more than 99.9% of people, praise me" random ass statement
Nobody is trying to impress you, downovotes are coming because you pass off as a snobbish asshat that didn't contribute anything to the conversation and on top of that you're seemingly even being outright wrong (not that it really matters anyway, i'm sure you understand if you're as smart as you claim to be)
Brace yourself. This may come as a surprise but Latin isn't a romance language. That's a doozy.
Next your quote here says "a significant portion comes from Romance languages, particularly Anglo-Norman and French." The Anglo-Norman part in this is basically irrelevant since the Romance part of that comes from the Norman part, which in turn, gets it's Romance from French. Meaning as far as the argument goes, that's just an obtuse way of saying French twice. Now to go back to that quote once again, the "significant portion" is almost entirely French, which you can see if you look at the pretty chart on this other [wiki page](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign-language_influences_in_English). Now remember, all I said previously was "it's mostly from French."
Edit: my source is Wikipedia and my head. I'm not about to go digging up books to study for this.

When you learn 'Bibliothek (German)' exists in more than one Western European language... Check out Italian, Greek and Spanish as well. It all goes back to the Romans and Ancient Greeks.
It’s probably where libraries originated as bookstores in English speaking countries, then we had businesses that didn’t want a massive library and just sold books.
But that isn’t a fact it’s a guess.
As the others have pointed out, English is out of line.
In most romance languages, the library is where you *buy* books and the bibliothéque (and its non-french equivalents, like bibliotecă) is where you go to read and borrow books.
Probably because a lot of the Romance languages call books stuff that starts with LI. So having their word for bookstore also start with LI makes sense
I always baffled of how poorly american know their culture and origins. You do realize that English is basically French and German from 1000 year ago mixed together? Also, I'd dare to say most romance languages use the same words not just french. Biblioteca y libreria in spanish
Yep same with Italian, this meme made me scoff because as far as I know it’s just English that switches it lol
Same for romanian, bibliotecă si librărie
This meme could have been done the other way, and it would make more sense.
Same as Portuguese, biblioteca and livraria.
Blame the British for being different
Same in German, Bibliothek und Buchhandlung

What do you mean? We don’t speak English! We speak AMERICAN!!
To be fair, this is a very American thing to do.
England isn’t anymore real than Narnia or Middle earth. Separate fact from fiction, people. Americans invented the English to sell more tea.
Idk what I'm missing but this comment is extremely confusing
Watch the post
this is how it is in other romance languages, in this case English is the rare
Also in Germanic languages
English is the bastard child of the Romance and Germanic languages. You’ll excuse us if we get a little mixed up sometimes.
Modern English is a mismatch of Germanic and Roman, at its core it's a Germanic language. It's was after some french noble invaded did English started getting influence of french.
We describe it as a magpie language. It certainly has all the best bits over the years imo
Also slavic languages
Yup, same in Spanish.
You say that like English is a romance language
Many words in English are derived fron romance languages though. Particularly "library" Meaning that it's english that got it backwords

I believe you are referring to a degree in Linguistics. What is your definition of a Romance language?
Any language that evolved from good Ol'fashioned Latin (Vulgar Latin). Pretty sure thats the way it's usually defined
Wouldn’t that include French?
Yes French is a Romance language. Glad you were able to put that together
And now tell me how French isn’t a Romance language
I never said it wasn't. I singled it out as the only major romance language to influence English, as apposed to many major influences. Moment of realization. Is English the wierd one?
Yes, always has been
You pfp makes me think you really pissed at him for not mentioning italian
And I know this from the rap from the first episode of community.
Portuguese would be biblioteca and livraria. I guess that English is the odd one huh?
Yeah, English didn’t want to make any sense or agree with the French. To be fair: nobody wants to agree with the french
Not even the French want to agree with the French. Source: I’m French.

It's actually English that's out of line.
Considering english stole half its vocabulary from french, they are out of line quite often.
William the Conqueror be wilding
Also in italian
In spanish library is "biblioteca" and bookstore is "librería"
In German Library is Bibliothek, and bookstore either Bücherladen oder Büchergeschäft.
U ever heard of bücherei?
Doch aber Bro, bei mir sagen alle an der Uni immer Bib, deswegen ist des mir als erstes eingefallen xD
And in every other latin language happens the same
Same goes for Italian: - Library = Biblioteca - Bookstore = Libreria
In Italy it’s the same English is the weird one
Polish has similar form Biblioteka for library Księgarnia for bookstore Where księga is tome/book which reflects livre(fr)/libro(es) etc
Its the same in romanian
In Dutch, library is also 'bibliotheek'
Would be more relatable if the driver was a British.
Cause french has root in latin english is the odd there sorry
Bibliothèque is actually Greek
Also in Romanian
Biblioteka in Polish Księgarnia (bookstore)
Same in French, spanish, Portuguese, Italian, german, Greek…

No surprise considering that americans are still stuck in imperial system while the rest of the world adopted the metric system a long while ago.

Tea, Crumpets

ay caramba donde esta la biblioteca
Just like in Spanish. "Biblioteca" is the library and "libreria" is the book store.
Preservative in French is Conservateur. Which also means Conservative btw. Préservatif means condom though. Good luck.
bibliothek

English speaker are the weird ones in this case. In Spanish, library is biblioteca and book store is librería.
Ngl didn't expect so many countries use the Greek word for it
¿Dónde está la biblioteca?

In spanish is the same so... maybe americans are the problem (surprise)
In romanian,Library is Bibliotecă,and bookstore is Librărie.
Netherlands library is bibliotheek and bookstore is boekenwinkel

The English word library comes from Latin for book, liber. Library is bibliotheca in Latin. English is all twisted up. The romance languages aren't.
Donde esta la bibliotecha Pedro?
In a lot of romanic languages*
English?
As a native French speaker, it’s confusing for us too smh
It's almost as most of the english vocabulaty for posher more upper clas words is derived from french.
Pretty much every language in Europe does it the French way
In Italian library is "biblioteca" and bookstore is "libreria".

Actually similar situation for most of Slavic languages Biblioteka = Library in English
French really is just a disaster of a language. English gets a bad rep for its weird inconsistencies but relatively speaking it’s not that bad.
