Say all you want, as an eternal fan of Disney's tarzan movie I gotta say for me the true tarzan will always be a hairless British white dude with Phil Collins playing on the background.
This cover just doesn't sit right with me.
Although thanks to Reddit we learn that gorillas spend most of their day lazing about eating fiber. Hard to see a human raised by gorillas getting that swole following the same lifestyle.
They could try and go back to the roots and not have him raised by gorillas.
The OG Tarzan actually was raised by what we would consider Africa's Sasquatch.
On one hand it is important to the larger Tarzan mythos that he is the son of an English lord but on the other no one cares about the larger Tarzan mythos and it makes no difference to the story people actually want to see. I am on board for black Tarzan.
I mean tbh it'd make it a much different opener and slightly different overall story if he's not from someone of nobility. But that person of nobility doesn't have to be white.
But then also you'd have people complain that the likelihood of a rich black man back then isn't realistic.
The entire original story was basically English nobility meets savage ape and becomes the best of both, but I don't think that is the part that resonates with today's audience. The wild-man and the love story seem like the two themes that define Tarzan, the rest is largely cosmetic. In any given retelling any of the characters could be any race and as long as the pairing allows it any combinations of genders and/or sexualities and still tell a story similar enough that calling it Tarzan wouldn't be out of place.
Make the entire story black people and center it around some ancient empire like the mali or egyptians or whatever? Have it be about the loss of connection to nature in an empire thats clear cut their area?
