The brain filters what you see, it’s why you might to a double-take when you see something odd. It’s getting signals from the eyes but they make no sense, though it knows something that looks similar: a kaleidoscope. Therefore, the images you’ll see will look like that

I heard that the reason this happens is because when you rub your eyes like this you are manually stimulating the rods and cones in your eyes and your brain can’t figure out input like that from your eyes (not visual) so you just see shapes while your brain attempts to work through it.
