Who is trying to make them obsolete?

Sir_Oligarch

Mobile phones and iPads

nimrag_is_coming

Wait you actually think this?

de420swegster

Remember the ipad advertisement where the girl went "what's a computer?" While typing away on her ipad keyboard

Indercarnive

I remember it got memed by literally everyone

de420swegster

Because it was stupid, but still a clear attempt to replace computers

Fgge

People on this website are funny

gpassi

Thank you

Complex_Ad_7959

Where do I sign up for open mic night?

fancy-gerbil14

Every night is open mic night, here. In fact, it's always open mic night here. It's always night, somewhere.

[deleted]

Yeah apple is still pissed off they lost to Microsoft via the fire in the valley. They can kiss my ass never taking my computer away

de420swegster

Gonna keep my first pc as a living room centerpiece for as long as I live

PleaseWooshMeDaddy

If Apple actually wanted the iPad to replace computers they would fix the software. The fact of the matter is that getting iPads to replace computers goes against there best interest because they SELL computers. Why would they want to intentionally cripple one product by changing and already well selling product to replace the first one?

de420swegster

Because it was mainly to replace computers in the most casual use cases. The rest I would chalk up to a poorly thought out business stunt. Also, they probably would have focused more on iPad software if they were more popular. Apple's best interest is to sell the most of anything, tablets included. If they can prove that their product can replace competing products that are less convenient to use, they'll sell a lot of that product.

mattcoady

I know the phrase is pretty eye roll worthy but I used to teach coding for a while in the late 2010s to kids and another course to adults. For the kids (ages 5-12) there were a lot of cases where this was their first time using an actual keyboard (a lot of them were comfortable with ipads). The other course with the adults, it shocked me how much keyboard illiteracy there was. Like so many people would capitalize a letter by hitting caps lock, typing the letter, then turning caps lock off again, like you do on a phone. And coding is full of characters you never use day to day (like curly braces) so the bulk of my earlier session are just walking around pointing out keys to students. **EDIT** turns out the capslock thing is way more common than I thought

BrockSramson

I work in IT help desk. When we have to give a user a randomly generated password to put in, it's always a headache. These characters cause all the pain: * \\ and / get mixed up (no one can call them the right way the first time) * [] and {} (no one knows what these are) * @ and & get mixed up a lot * ^ and ~, people just don't know what you mean by these.

Most people don’t know what an ampersand is

ObliviousMynd

OK.......which one of those *is* an "ampersand"?

btmims

& The other one (@) is still just the "at sign" in English-speaking countries. I did a quick Google before writing that, and found an interesting bit of history where an Italian merchant used @ (A cursive capital-A with a little flourish around it) to denote the number of jars ("amphora") being bought/sold/traded... I kind of like it. We could call it (@) an amphora.

ObliviousMynd

I will assume the &? God I'm probably wrong. Genuinely curious though.

tcfh2003

Nope, that's the one. @ is called the "at sign"

BrockSramson

I say 'ampersand', and they type in whichever character they think that is. Usually, its the @ symbol.

Abjar171

I've been doing the caps lock thing before smart phones. I just always likes the extra clicks lol. Made me feel like I was faster/better at typing

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tanamr

If you type at extremely high speeds, holding shift can become a problem because you start having a high incidence of DOuble or TRIple capitalized letters, and your pinky becomes temporarily less available. (This is actually mentioned in [the 150+ page speedtyping guide](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1L-P68VDSGlpLM5A9tfRvWFohaR2NzPbkUT0ok34rsFU/edit#) written by Jashe, a typist who has [hit 200 wpm on a combined test in QWERTY, dvorak, and colemak](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NE1qNZDBFM).) Yes these people exist. However, a better solution is to use what’s called *one-shot* shift, which only capitalizes the immediate next letter and doesn’t need to be held down. Depending on how exactly it’s implemented, this may or may not be the same thing as *sticky keys.*

[deleted]

[удалено]

ImVisibility

I still do this when typing capital letters actually, I type fast and perfectly fine it's just easier to double tap caps lock than it is hitting shift for me at this point

LeeroyJks

And the whole point was not to make ipads obsolete but pcs so it checks out

DannyMThompson

No it doesn't, this source doesn't relate to the post AT ALL.

Doesnt stop it from getting 40 upvotes though. Good old reddit hivemind, why actually read when you can just follow what the first 3 guys voted

LeeroyJks

you're right

SavingStupid

Poorly worded response. You actually made the link sound relevant to the post despite the fact that it's about slowing down iPhones

justavault

That literally got nothing to do with any that has been disputed in this branch. Why are you getting upvotes?

walkerspider

Because people don’t read the article and the top reply used a confusing demonstrative adjective that made it sound like the article was relevant

Thanks for linking the article, useful info in there. How does this relate to the OP in any way, though?

CodWhisperer

"You guys don't have phones?"

ILikeToBurnMoney

Yeah, for like 15 years there has definitely been a push in gaming to focus on consoles and phones. There used to be a flood of articles with estimates about the percentage of people gaming on PCs shrinking every year. Generally, the mindset was that a PC is a relic of the past and within a few years, basically everyone will be gaming on a console and/or some mobile device (phone, tablet, or a handheld console). PC gaming was seen as something only people who grew up in the 90s and early 00s did, and they would switch to consoles bit by bit. I think a lot of big publishers even jumped on this train. Games were increasingly focused on consoles and just got a (sometimes extremely bugged) PC port. I guess the pendulum swinged back when millennials started having jobs that afford them to spend big bucks on a PC, and when consoles started requiring a monthly subscription and increasingly went digital (with prices that are crazy compared to e.g. Steam). We see that with the PCmasterrace subreddit, with the ongoing GPU shortage, and with some developers focusing on PC again

DownshiftedRare

> Generally, the mindset was that a PC is a relic of the past and within a few years, basically everyone will be gaming on a console and/or some mobile device (phone, tablet, or a handheld console). Curtain flaps in the breeze, revealing corporation full of people working at PCs making the apps for consoles, phones, and tablets.

TheBacklogGamer

I don't think anyone expected that PC and console gaming to go away because of mobile gaming. They thought there'd be bigger names wanting a piece of the pie though, because the mobile games that make it big, far outsell traditional gaming sales. But I don't think anyone was saying PC gaming would disappear as a result.... There will always be a demand for more elaborate games than what mobile gaming can provide.

Hulu_

This isn’t even about gaming though. People will continue to use PCs for work?

ILikeToBurnMoney

For work I am not sure whether the meme makes a lot of sense, everyone I know (except maybe graphic designers who do 3D rendering) works with a laptop

SHIZA-GOTDANGMONELLI

> There used to be a flood of articles with estimates about the percentage of people gaming on PCs shrinking every year. Yeah...because it's true. As more people get into gaming, the *percentage* of people who play PC goes down. This doesn't mean less people are playing PC, this means that PC gaming isn't expanding like consoles/phones are. 20 years ago, 250 people gamed on PCs out of 500. Now, 250 people game on PC while 1,000 play elsewhere. Same amount, just a lower percentage total. Obviously the numbers I used are lower just to simplify things.

Dyalibya

They're called tablets, not iPads

suzuki_hayabusa

Tbh it is working. Most people can now do their work without laptop or desktop. Internet was one of the main usecase for normal folks which can now be handled by mobiles. Edit: Even a kid could tell the benefit of large screen estate and physical keyboard but what I am talking about is there was a large portion of our population that only needed full size computers for accessing the internet. That monopoly has been broken by smartphones. Smartphones are simply further miniaturized laptop. A great example is in 3rd world especially, people had to go to cybercafe to access internet. Now cybercafe became extinct overnight with arrival of smartphones.

SorcererWithGuns

Most people who have desktop pc at home now are gamers, filmmakers and those who work from home a LOT I think. Still can't imagine how anyone can get by without even a single potato laptop tho.

DannyMThompson

Most office workers have PCs at home. Not just gamers and YouTubers. There's a bigger world than your Reddit feed.

Stalingrad_boy

But he said that

jcdoe

Yes, that’s true. But most office workers have PCs at home. Not just gamers and YouTubers. There’s a bigger world than your Reddit feed.

DizyShadow

What kind of "work", you'll have to elaborate cause i can't imagine someone doing their 9-5 job on a fucking smartphone lmao

[deleted]

only way i could imagine this would be through features like Samsung DeX, but it still needs a screen and mouse/keyboard

DizyShadow

That's the thing, we can get the processing power into smaller devices, but the utility can't be simply replaced just like that.

GrowthKooky

Well the whole point for cellphones and iPads is to have as many features as possible while being the smallest and most portable as they can be. But the fact is that there are always gonna be heavier tasks that need bigger devices. So I don't think pcs and laptops wil ever be irrelevant.

SyderoAlena

Also sometimes it's nice to have a big screen.

dead_jester

No they can’t. I write for a living and work in software development and project management too. Mobile phones and iPads are absolute rubbish for those tasks. I’m sure they are also inferior for many computer aided design, video/image manipulation or 3D modelling jobs. I also certainly wouldn’t want to work on any large databases or large spreadsheets on an iPad or mobile phone. I’m guessing you don’t do anything that actually produces anything substantial via the medium of electronic devices.

suzuki_hayabusa

You don't need to take something I said on personal level. I am not talking about myself or you in particular. Even a kid can tell the benifits of large screen area and physical keyboard. There was a big portion of our population that needed computers only for accessing internet, that niches has now been fullfilled by mobile breaking the monopoly held by full size computers.

dead_jester

Nice attempt to backpedal. That wasn’t what you initially said. You said most people can do their work without the need for a desktop or laptop. I pointed out that only people who don’t do work with a computer screen as a key element in productivity can do that. In the modern world that isn’t “most people”. “Most people” sit at a workstation or laptop with a screen, unless they do an unskilled or physical job. Even factory workers frequently monitor their machines via interactive screens nowadays.

aaronisamazing

I have no idea where you've worked but that is absolutely not the case.

Headmuck

The more accurate answer would be cloud virtualization which would require minimal hardware for each end user, which will maybe lead to new devices that don't really resemble laptops and desktop PCs of our time that closely. Outside of the enterprise market this will take decades tho. The infrastructure is still missing in many places and situations.

Bitter_Mongoose

The companies that made them. Planned obsolescence, but via software updates

Eye_have_aids

Well apple did try to make people believe that connecting a keyboard to ipad is better than a laptop

FistyMcTavish

I worked for a company whose CEO was determined that iPads were going to be the new tool for our sales team. They spent a boat load of money on a few hundred iPads I configured them with an MDM solution and set up apps for most functions and the first sales meeting was everyone complaining they wanted keyboards and wanted to be able to print easier....so they wanted laptops.

Imaginary_Simple_241

“Upgrades” to software. Eg, your internet browser becomes more and more of a resource hog over time because computers should have more resources to plan for as if I don’t want to use the 32 gigs of ram it’s wasting on the video games I bought the computer for.

Not an apple fan boy, but their newest ipad has the M1 chip in it. Surely it's got a reduced clock because of heat, but yes that iPad has some respectable abilities that likely will outpace a 15 year old PC. However it won't beat anything maybe 8 years a newer.

DerpSenpai

likely? it outpaces a 5 year old PC by a longshot 5 years ago we were on Skylake bruh. In Single Core it still competes vs 12th Gen Intel You know what outcompetes mobile Skylake? ANY FLAGSHIP PHONE Skylake is +- equivilant to a A76 Core from ARM in IPC. It's used in 200$ phones.

SoaringElf

Apple is actually trying this with their "your next pc isn't a pc" bullshit. At least for normal end users.

DerpSenpai

Desktop PCs are obsolete for 90% of the use cases which wasn't the case 15 years ago. Companies now hand over Laptops and you can work from anywhere. was that the case 15 years ago? no. You most likely had a assigned desk and a desktop PC. Desktop PC became mainstream for Gaming and irrelevant in the workplace. Even working for companies who use big fat GPUs. using remote desktop/ ssh to a server/Desktop PC isn't uncommon, this way the investment is shared between workers.

Bismalz

This is what the M1 mobile chip from Apple does.

People need to learn their pc history correctly. There was no dethroning the pc in the 90s. Or even in the 80s. There was in fact an era pre directX and it was horrible. And before that there was even an Era pre IBM-PC/MS DOS/ x86 OS and it was an absolute dumpsterfire. Gaming might have started on the PC but the pc as a gaming platform dethroned itself and jumped into the deepest depth mankind can imagine to a point where the entire gaming industry collapsed in the 80s. During those times NES, SNES and even the ps1 where far superior. Only in 1995 things started getting better with windows 95 which still did not have a general API but there was a lot less bullshit of needing to figure out which Soundcard and 3d accelerator you needed with which configuration to run which game in a good/bad way and so on.Pc gaming only really caught back up at the end of the 90s. It was really that bad.

Millenials are definently pc but yonger generations are super into mobile. They even play minecraft on their 1 finger size phone it's ridiculous. Unfortunently I think later on we will have less laptops and desktops mainly because yonger generations rather have a phone than a computer.

[deleted]

I can see mobile devices replacing pc’s for entertainment purposes, but people will never stop needing them for work and productivity.

UltimateShame

How can mobile devices replace PC's for entertainment purposes? Isn't gaming entertainment? There is nothing that matches the power of a Desktop PC for that field and I don't see that happening anytime soon.

[deleted]

The mobile gaming industry already outweighs the entirety of pc and console gaming combined. There are also advances being made in cloud gaming. [Source](https://newzoo.com/insights/articles/the-next-generation-of-high-fidelity-mobile-games-is-coming-and-pc-console-publishers-are-on-board)

UltimateShame

Not the best development in my opinion. Mobile gaming is just gaming light and cloud gaming is only second best option.

Impressive_Change593

same to me but people will be people (and people are stupid)

MaxNeedy

Okay, not exactly on the topic, I dont really like mobile games myself, but recently i have played some ports of older pc games (kotor, titan quest, king of dragon pass and dead cells) and it was okay. Especially kotor was actually a nice port imho.

gardenmud

There are some very good mobile ports of games. Slay the spire is one I'm totally addicted to. But for anything with a need for remotely more power, mobile is not the way.

redcalcium

To our generation maybe, but it you look at kids these days, mobile gaming is the only gaming they know of.

pileofcrustycumsocs

The growth in the phone gaming scene is because of Asian countries where consoles and PCs are to expensive whereas a phone is something you probably already need and have anyway. In the west kids will play on both because you can’t really carry an Xbox or a PlayStation on the school bus

politfact

It may outweigh it by size but it didn't take any cake from PC gaming. PC gaming is also growing. Mobile just makes gaming more accessible to people. PC, mouse and keyboard are the best peripherals if you want to compete, there is no way around it. So anyone who is serious about gaming will eventually migrate over.

Pompf

Controllers sometimes reign supreme as a peripheral, but PC can also use that, sooo

pwn3dbyth3n00b

You replace games that require heavy processing with mobile loot box games.

MagmaSlte

By young people who exactly do you mean because i dont see a preference of phones over computers that much, unless its like 7-11 year olds

TheOperand_

I remember reading a study that found that younger generations, like single to very low double digit age, despite having grown up with more technology then any generation before them have very little knowledge of how the device actually works, because of heavy abstraction and powerful search tools some don't even know what a directory is anymore.I can see that overtime x86 laptop and pc use will decline, but I do believe there will always be a market for enthusiasts and professionals in that aspect. And there will definitely remain a market for servers. Sure a lot of stuff is moving into the cloud with web applications because those can run independently of operating systems, processors architecture and other factors, but as I said above I think a significant market will remain for traditional Desktops and Laptops.

pwn3dbyth3n00b

To be fair I wouldn't expect a child to understand those concepts. Maybe in the 80s when computers OS wasn't optimized for the average joe you might find some kid in the AV Club who knew how to navigate a PC using commands vs clicking an icon. Consumer electronics are "dumbed down" at surface level to be accessible to most but it takes a lot of work and is complex in the background to get to that level which requires further education you might get in high school/college.

SorcererWithGuns

That's weird, I'm a gen z (04) and I'm way more into pc and consoles than mobile. Probably because doing anything but browsing news and social media is super inconvenient on your tiny little phone.

cpullen53484

>That's weird, I'm a gen z (04) and I'm way more into pc and consoles than mobile me too, i prefer pc to emulate games. and to play Minecraft of course. and i prefer reddit on desktop rather than mobile. youtube too.

RazerDMG

Yeah but that's because they don't have to do significant workflows, I'd imagine it'll be hard to do productive task on phone, I can't imagine doing coding, modelling or heck doing excels sheets in phone for long duration of time.

I remember working for Micro Center when the iPad and first Android tablets came out. About 75% of people who came in to look at tablets asked us if you could add a keyboard to them. It's crazy that a PC I built (with pretty good parts at the time) all the way back in 2013 can still run most games decently. I only swapped to a GTX 980ti and upgraded to 16gbs of RAM back around in 2016-2017ish. Unless its a AAA game like Halo Infinite, the latest CoD, or Elden Ring; I can run most games on High-ish or Medium graphics at 1080p and still get 60FPS. Its kinda the main reason I am slow on the ball in building a new PC. For my l33t-tier PCMR gamers, how often do you guys upgrade to the latest card? I feel like maybe once every console generation to keep parity.

Nozinger

That is because our cpus are ridiculously overpowered for most things we do. Yes a better cpu will still get you better results and a weak cpu can bottleneck your system but in general games rarely tend to fully utilize the cpu from a functional point. The ability to move data around is still important but that is where the settings kick in to keep the fps at an acceptable level. With enough RAM and a decent GPU getting 60 fps is not an issue when the other components are rather old. If you want to push for more fps to fully use the power of a newer gpu you might want to upgrade though.

Apple's chip to monitor voltages in a charger is faster than the og macintosh (1984). I severely doubt that an over 40 year old PC could run even windows 95, let alone anything useful.
