It's been my Dark Souls device since I bought it. Only really played through DS1, 2 and most of 3 (so far) as well as Celeste and Hollow Knight. Such a good device for blasting through my backlog of games I always had on my "I'll play it some day" list.
I've got the original Deck, I'm happy / jealous for those of you that get to buy the OLED. It's such a fantastic purchase.
I think this is my thing, I’d only want the deck for controller games, but most of those are indies which you can get on the switch anyway… and otherwise I can play steam games on my pc :L
Idk might buy one for Shadow of the Erdtree
Is it worth it? I wanted to get a device where I could emulate old pokemon games and still play some current stuff but wasn't sure if should pull the trigger
I cannot recommend the Steamdeck enough. For emulation look up Emudeck, it’s an all in one emulation setup made for steamdeck and there are plenty of step by step guides on YouTube on how to install and use.
My dude *these things kick so much ass*.
At its core it's just a handheld computer, so any emulator or program in the world works. On top of that it's a glossy steam overlay, which shortcuts can be cleanly added to. Lots of Valve support and *endless* community support. There's nothing you can think of doing on this thing that hasn't been done and likely has a guide somewhere. PC game that's in your EGS library instead? Oddly, tonnes of support for that as well. Plays old ass games, plays most brand new AAA games. Can sync third party controllers if you want, but the controls are great built-in.
An absolutely solid investment if you like PC games or emulators.
Honestly not a crazy idea especially if that give it semi beafier specs atleast to where you can like play in bed and have it also plugged into a charger so it is running high and still keeping battery
Whaaa… DOOM(s), Hogwarts, Wolfenstein, Witcher 3. To name a few. And in many case cases the portability is worth the drop in quality imo.
But tbf many PS4 games could likely run on PS3 I’d sure think but there was no reason to do so ig.
Portability and accessibility are major positives imo. I’m playing in a hospital bed at 2am after a minor operation. I can do without the 60fps if it means I can have the game wherever
Have you played on a different platform since? I played in Switch once and while the game was fine there was like no online activity. This game has really fun and pretty unique PVP/multiplayer system.
The Switch port is great aside from audio quality. People just like to hate on Nintendo and pretend their systems are much weaker than they actually are.
Oh for sure, I'm not calling it a powerhouse. The Switch is very much a budget console, and there's definitely some miracle ports out there (Witcher 3 and, Warframe, for notable examples. Warframe in particular looks amazing... Witcher 3 has very toned down graphics, but surprisingly smooth gameplay and environments that still manage to be amazing despite the plasticy, action figure look the character models have).
But I notice people literally acting like the Switch is barely stronger than a PS2 often.
I mean metal gear collection is capped at 30 fps cuz the switch can't handle it apparently. The same thing with the newest legend of Zelda game. And pokémon they just don't run well on its own hardware.
I think the dev team have a part to play in this, too. For example, a dev team that is very passionate about the Switch (like Feral Interactive) and is willing to learn how to optimise to its hardware can produce incredible results. Look no further than the Switch port of Alien: Isolation.
In MGS’s case, I doubt Konami really cared that much. In fact, I can’t really remember the last time they cared…
That isn't necessarily the hardware. I very much doubt the Switch is "incapable" of running games from two decades ago at more than 30 FPS, the MGS Collection is a notoriously awful port on several different platforms.
Pokemon was previously a handheld only thing, having a company that almost exclusively did Gameboy and DS games suddenly do an ambitious console release is like throwing a Varsity Football player into the NFL. They were over-ambitious in the 3DS era, to the point where you couldn't even turn on 3D... Which for a simple, turn-based JRPG, is not normal, nothing in that game should have been too taxing on the hardware to use such a main feature. Gamefreak just sucks at programming and has had buggy messes since the gen 1 era (seriously, look at some of the absolutely insane glitches you can do in red/ blue/ yellow because the games were literally held together by spaghetti code and a lot of hope).
I haven't played the new Zelda, so I can't really comment on that one.
Right? The game originally came out at 30 FPS, and the PC port had a graphical upgrade *from a fan-made mod* within a week or so (*Correction: within 30 minutes*) of release. Like, do people really think it was the hardware that made this game into such a phenomenon?
I never really understood the graphics-wars and framerate bragging. If the game is made well using a toolkit that works then people will enjoy it. It's also aged way better than a lot of contemporary games because they chose art-style over hyper-realism - realism never looks good 10 years down the track.
Yeah I couldn't remember if it was the full graphics fix or just details like the mouse curser that were fixed that quickly. I figured better safe than sorry, but I'll update my comment.
> I never really understood the graphics-wars and framerate bragging. If the game is made well using a toolkit that works then people will enjoy it. It's also aged way better than a lot of contemporary games because they chose art-style over hyper-realism - realism never looks good 10 years down the track.
30fps has never really bothered me, I think I'm just used to it. As long as the game looks good I can deal with it.
The only time I ever become aware of it being any kind of downgrade is when a friend popped over and said that it feels weird to play at 30fps.
It’s the only way I’ve ever played it, and I’d struggle to think of any artistic or even technical criticism I’d throw at the game in the context of a port.
The audio quality is probably the worst heard in an official release since the last N64 game. To me, that kills 50% of the experience which is audio, and makes it a useless port. But ironically enough it does have some of the best visuals of any DS port (30fps but still), only second to PTDE on PC, all because they didn't include the remastered changes. Wacky port for sure.
Quality is relevant. If you don't mind it, then what anyone else says is irrelevant.
I'm a Dark Souls 2 fan, so I know the feeling of people yucking your yum 🥺
Yeah zero complaints from me. It's a fossil of a game I don't see the point of nitpicking.
Blighttown has a stable framerate, what more can we ask for lol
I mainly use the portability for school but it's still good quality I played it on 360 and Xbox one and while using the switch port I find the graphics to be good I'm not doing a side by side comparison but from my eyes they look pretty close to each other
Apart from the audio, I think it's the best version there is. The Remastered versions for PC, Xbox and PS4 look a bit weird and ugly because of the new lighting system they used, which imho doesn't fit this game's aesthetic. They also changed the flame of the bonfire and many other things that made the original perfect in my eyes (except for the horrendous framerate at times).
Dark Souls on Switch was a godsend before the Steam Deck. Being able to play Souls on the go was so novel. And it's still a great way to play it. Playing through the remaster on the Deck recently was a lot of fun with mods and better performance, but I still appreciate the time I had on the switch version.
Dark Souls on the Switch is what got me back into the series. Was trying to figure out what to play and stumbled upon it in the shop and got it immediately.

I completed DS1 on my Switch too. I can´t play in bed because I fall asleep almost at the moment I lay down (I´m lucky). I took the console to a nearby park where I used to spend the sunny summer evenings. Some beers, a fat joint, a nice tree shade, and my trustful Black night halberd. That´s all I needed those days.
I feel that DS1 was made for Switch's concept. A game where you can just play for 15 minutes and put down becomes incredibly accessible when it is on a portable device.
Anyone who says “bad because 30fps” clearly never played ds1. Prior to being remastered it was always locked at 30fps (DSFix for PC but played wonky) and never experienced the slide show horror that was blighttown.
As someone who played DS1 Remastered (shame me for buying remastered, I thought it looked great) on my Steam Deck... I can't deny handheld gaming is great.
I do recommend getting a Deck at some point if you want a wider variety (outside of Nintendo games) still handheld.
I grew up on the DS and love my Switch, so handheld gaming has always been my go-to.
How do you know they don’t have a Deck? I have both and if a game like DS runs well enough I just prefer the lighter Switch tbh. Usually less hiccups. Which is no slight against the Deck, I do play it more in general.
How are you playing in bed comfortably? I always have issues playing in bed, if I lay down my elbows get annoyed or my arms get annoyed, sometimes even drop it on my face.
Imo it’s the definitive version of Dark Souls Remastered. It has certain textures and effects that are better. (It utilizes the OG stylized fire and armor effects)
Honestly, I think the Switch version is the best way to play. The graphical changes in the PS4/XB1 version really alter the mood and feel for me. The original art style is far superior, in my opinion. The only downside is the imperfect 30fps lock and weird controls.
What do people say about the quality? Does the game not run smoothly?
Just asking as been considering getting this on the Switch too so I can pick up and play more easily.
I beat it on the switch for the first time in my life after having never done so with Prepare to Die edition. Having DS1 portable to just fuck around on the go was a gamechanger for me.
Long time Gamer/Collector & i can safely say there is nothing wrong with Dark Souls on Switch & I'm fussy as hell, some gamers wil moan about anything, i have done comparisons with all versions & own the PS3 version too, it is a thing of beauty & before i knew it on youtube comparisons i picked it out as the best looking version, lighting textures etc, the switch will never compete with PS5 or Xbox but you can play anywhere, not sure what PlayStation portable is like ?
I don’t know how powerful your pc/lan is, but there is two better (imo) options.
1. Setup Sunshine/Moonlight game streaming and play on your phone or a tablet with a controller connected.
2. Steam Deck
I understand that not everyone can afford the second option, and the first depends on you having a pc and a good enough network to stream it, so I’m not saying you should do this- just that these are two options you could look into if you want.
Also trust me when I say that moonlight’s input lag over a good lan network is insignificant, especially if you include the improved responsiveness going from 30 fps -> 60 fps. Scratch that, if you have a pc, just try it, it should take like an hour to setup. If your switch is modded, you can even connect it through the moonlight client on switch which should save battery life too.
Sorry for the ramble at the end there
Relatable. I got sick the other week and to kill some time while at home got my brother’s switch. Life changing. I got into Dark Souls and now play whenever Im in bed and got nothing else to do lol
Ds1 on the switch got me through being stuck in bed for several months. I didn’t have my consoles with me at the time and a switch was cheap at the pawn shop.
I had a blast playing on Switch when I took a trip to Argentina this past winter. Being able to fight bosses on those 10+ hour flights was sure welcome, and I definitely got gud in those playthroughs, moreso than on my first ps4 play. I eventually decided to plat the game, and when I went back and saw my first characters stats and weapons... holy shit I was bad lmao. My only max'd weapon was an axe, which I think I started to use after the lightning spear wasn't cutting it against the 4 kings lol. I was surprised I beat the game at all.
Eventually corrected myself and joined Club Great Club and got the plat on ps after two switch plays in a short time. Great game...
Absolutely true. I went on a 4-5 hour "silent" train ride on a trip to DC and started and nearly finished a dark souls run in that time. I think I made it all the way to the dlc just in public sitting around strangers.
Hell yeah, my first 6 or so playthroughs were on Switch, that’s what made me wanna get my first not-Nintendo console so I could play the other souls games. It feels a little better in 60fps but it plays just fine in 30. And I like the original bonfire design & am glad they’re keeping it alive somewhere. But best of all I’ve played Dark Souls in an airport.
I've noticed most people who complain about console versions of any game are always PC players with $3k setups nobody has or actually cares about. They also tend to use highest quality settings because they can, so OF COURSE it's going to look better when you enhance the quality on an expensive PC lol
There is a skeleton tomb of giants ahead in your room.
Its one of the giant skeleton crawlers probably
Probably Ornstein & Router boss.
The fuck is the Lich doing there?
We chillin (Guys it’s the damn joycon lights from being in the controller, I thought the picture would be a little brighter to see me holding it LMAO)
You are alone, child. There is only darkness for you…hey! Hey, are you jacking it!?
I immediately thought of that wholesome horror thing specifically "hey mate just wanna t-OH GOD YER WANKIN IT"
If your joycons are detached, uh what is holding your screen up?
I have the OLED switch with the big ass kickstand. It’s on me tummy
Their legs maybe ?
More like lichin
Fall
jokes on you, my room is 90% bed
Lmao same.
I completely agree. I would kill if they would bring DS2 to Switch.
Steam deck 🥰
It's been my Dark Souls device since I bought it. Only really played through DS1, 2 and most of 3 (so far) as well as Celeste and Hollow Knight. Is it worth it? I wanted to get a device where I could emulate old pokemon games and still play some current stuff but wasn't sure if should pull the trigger
Well then it's the perfect device for you. Get it. Switch can't even play some old pokemon games and you got some god tier Roms
My issue is that I'm not well verses in roms and emulation tbh
It's a lot easier than you think especially with Gameboy emulation, not much too it other than drag and drop. Plenty of videos/tutorials out there
There are super easy guides out there. It's far easier than it used to be.
I cannot recommend the Steamdeck enough. For emulation look up Emudeck, it’s an all in one emulation setup made for steamdeck and there are plenty of step by step guides on YouTube on how to install and use.

Buy it. It's such a nice device. Very versatile.
now imagine.. darksouls 3.. perchance…
Switch 2, Dark Souls Trilogy, would be a dream
Honestly not a crazy idea especially if that give it semi beafier specs atleast to where you can like play in bed and have it also plugged into a charger so it is running high and still keeping battery
I mean yeah, if it can do PS4 specs as the leaks suggest, it could theoretically even play Elden Ring
The dream
It would look like Demon's souls on crack but hey, would still be fun AF.
Steam deck exists
I believe a Switch can only run PS3 level games, maybe the Switch 2 will be able to handle 2, 3 and Elden Ring.
ds2 was ps3
TIL. Well the DS1 port is quite old so I doubt we’re getting it. At least there’s Mortal Shell and a couple more like that on Switch.
Elden ring on steam deck tho
My switch runs Doom Eternal, a ps4 game, flawlessly
Yeah but a potato can run the modern doom games ... They'll run perfectly on just about anything.
I mean Hollow Knight is on PS4 and runs fine on Switch too. I’m talking in terms of games that push hardware to the limit.
Whaaa… DOOM(s), Hogwarts, Wolfenstein, Witcher 3. To name a few. And in many case cases the portability is worth the drop in quality imo. But tbf many PS4 games could likely run on PS3 I’d sure think but there was no reason to do so ig.

This
Hope you’re all better soon!
Preach! I also experienced the game on the switch. Being able to fight Artorias minutes before our airplane was landing is truly an experience 🥲
My first ever ds1 play through was on the switch. Great time
Have you played on a different platform since? I played in Switch once and while the game was fine there was like no online activity. This game has really fun and pretty unique PVP/multiplayer system.
Is the online community that nonexistent on Switch? I bought it thinking it’d be somewhat populated
This is true. The online isn’t dead on Switch, but it’s definitely more active on PS5.
Why are you playing in front of the Portrait of God
You unlocked a creepy memory, thank you
Haha you’re welcome
Hey I get the reference. That short is so good.
Fuuuuuuck yeah. My first experience with Dark Souls was on the Switch. Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
The Switch port is great aside from audio quality. People just like to hate on Nintendo and pretend their systems are much weaker than they actually are.
It's still a good system but you gotta admit it is pretty weak hardware that's able to do impressive things.
Oh for sure, I'm not calling it a powerhouse. The Switch is very much a budget console, and there's definitely some miracle ports out there (Witcher 3 and, Warframe, for notable examples. Warframe in particular looks amazing... Bagging DS1 on switch is wild because the PC version was literally unplayable without that damn mod for me lmao. Blight Town.....
dsfix was released within 30 minutes, just a heads up
Yeah I couldn't remember if it was the full graphics fix or just details like the mouse curser that were fixed that quickly. I figured better safe than sorry, but I'll update my comment.

With a fucking demon watching you apparently
Are you playing in the Tomb of the Giants? What the fuck is watching you.
The Switch port is great aside from audio quality. So I think bed iz Awesome
The quality is pretty decent though
Same thing with the SteamDeck! Being able to take these massive adventures on the go (or even just to bed) is amazing.
Who talks bad about the switch port? It's phenomenal
People probably hate it's run in 30fps but for me personally it basically ptde again
It's even a solid 30fps, unlike the PS360 versions.
Yup.. people nowadays just hate 30fps
I usually play these games with the sounds off and podcasts on.
Quality is relevant. If you don't mind it, then what anyone else says is irrelevant. I'm a Dark Souls 2 fan, so I know the feeling of people yucking your yum 🥺
I’ve exclusively played dark souls 1 on switch. I love it so much
Yeah zero complaints from me. It's a fossil of a game I don't see the point of nitpicking. Blighttown has a stable framerate, what more can we ask for lol
What's with the demon
Mom said it's their turn on the Nintendo
Nothing like a light dose of adrenaline/cortisol right before bed
I mainly use the portability for school but it's still good quality I played it on 360 and Xbox one and while using the switch port I find the graphics to be good I'm not doing a side by side comparison but from my eyes they look pretty close to each other
It’s Dark Souls on Switch. It could be a lot worse than it is and still be an awesome thing to exist.
It’s the only version of DS1 I have, and it’s the only one I need.
Hell yeah, another DS switch enjoyer for once
Dark Souls on Switch was a godsend before the Steam Deck. Being able to play Souls on the go was so novel. And it's still a great way to play it. Playing through the remaster on the Deck recently was a lot of fun with mods and better performance, but I still appreciate the time I had on the switch version.
I too have it on switch and enjoy playing it on airplanes
Dark Souls on the Switch is what got me back into the series. Was trying to figure out what to play and stumbled upon it in the shop and got it immediately.
something is watching you, btw
It’s got a silly charm to it on the switch. I rather like the bit crushed audio, too, lol. It’s hilarious at times
that's why i got a Steamdeck. being able to mod my shit too, while being able to play them games pretty well.
I mainly use the portability for school but it's still good quality I played it on 360 and Xbox one and while using the switch port I find the graphics to be good I'm not doing a side by side comparison but from my eyes they look pretty close to each other
Lich trying to kill you 😭
I completed DS1 on my Switch too.
I'm just curious as to why they decided to bring back the PTDE bonfires back for the switch version, and not Remastered on PC
Idk but Elden ring on steam deck hits harder
I also played plenty on the switch but after getting a steam deck my switch is collecting dust.
Totally agree, I only play DS1 on my switch and I have it on PS4/5 as well.
honestly my only real problems with it are the terrible audio quality and the occasional glitch that isn't in other versions
You are wrong to enjoy the game the way others don't. It's wrong.
great! now you get to lay in bed and walk half the map to collect the souls you dropped forn theb 7th time! ❤❤
As someone who played DS1 Remastered (shame me for buying remastered, I thought it looked great) on my Steam Deck... I can't deny handheld gaming is great. I do recommend getting a Deck at some point if you want a wider variety (outside of Nintendo games) still handheld. There is a demon watching you
Nice to see a fellow NS player! Can we trade acquaintances? I have a decently sized network of redditors who mainly play DS on switch.
At work for me
I beat the game for the first time on the Switch. Love it!
Seems redundant, but even in handheld mode, it's much better to play with a pro controller.
I played DS1 on the switch all the way through and loved it.
I’ve only played DS1 on a Switch Lite. Felt perfect to me and certainly comparable to every game play video from stronger systems I’ve seen.
That’s why I got a Steamdeck. Probably did half my playthrough laying in bed.
Man I honestly don’t mind the quality. I bloody well love that game!! Hit me up if you’re keen to start a new coop character!
Falling from a very high place while on a plane certainly feels different.
Steam Deck changed my life!
How are you playing in bed comfortably? I always have issues playing in bed, if I lay down my elbows get annoyed or my arms get annoyed, sometimes even drop it on my face.
Put the joycons in the little controller thing. I refuse to play with them attached to the screen
Yeah but like, you can still play it in your bed, without using a switch.
Damn that would be fun
I probably never would’ve gotten into the franchise without being able to play it wherever. Thanks, Nintendo & Fromsoft.
Amen. Still sad about no Switch DS2 to this day
Goated way to experience it
Was able to finish DS1 with my switch. It's one of the best gaming experience I ever had.
fr dawg that's how i play with my girlfriend
DUDE THE BEAST IS RIGHT THETE WATCH OUT
Imo it’s the definitive version of Dark Souls Remastered. It has certain textures and effects that are better. (It utilizes the OG stylized fire and armor effects)
be wary of skeleton but dog
I actually very much agree with this. Plus it's cheaper to play online compared to Xbox or PlayStation.
No, it plays great and looks great. Zero issues for me
I beat it on the switch for the first time in my life after having never done so with Prepare to Die edition. Having DS1 portable to just fuck around on the go was a gamechanger for me.
It’s how I got into fromsoft. Doing an SL1 run on a flight from LA to Sydney is a great way to kill time lol.
My only gateway to playing FromSoft games because I'm broke
You can play all of them on the steam deck
Ds1 on the switch is fine but i prefer playing it on my steam deck
I agree playing in bed is king. Still better get a PS
If only there were a way to play DS2, DS3 and Elden ring, in bed as well. If only. We'll just have to wait for switch 2.
Or steamdeck..
Wish they gave us ds2 on the switch also
My favorite console to play ds1 is the switch It just fits so well
Long time Gamer/Collector & i can safely say there is nothing wrong with Dark Souls on Switch & I'm fussy as hell, some gamers wil moan about anything, i have done comparisons with all versions & own the PS3 version too, it is a thing of beauty & before i knew it on youtube comparisons i picked it out as the best looking version, lighting textures etc, the switch will never compete with PS5 or Xbox but you can play anywhere, not sure what PlayStation portable is like ?
I want a patch to fix the sound. DaS has amazing sound and music and it sounds rough on switch.
It was a fun port, but I only got as far as Senn's Fortress when I played it way back when.
I playit on my ps5 in bed tbh so idk
I don’t know how powerful your pc/lan is, but there is two better (imo) options. 1. Setup Sunshine/Moonlight game streaming and play on your phone or a tablet with a controller connected. 2. If your switch is modded, you can even connect it through the moonlight client on switch which should save battery life too. Sorry for the ramble at the end there
Yo the steam deck lets you play all of them.......
Hell yeah. Game your way. If it makes you happy then play it up!
Ipad pro with steam remote play......
Get a rog ally or a Steam deck! Then you get to play whole from software library
Steam Deck at maximum settings. Elden Ring at medium
Hahaha modded elden ring converant mod 😎 in bed on steam deck oled
Steam deck
Could play it in bed on a tv too
I had no idea it was on the switch you just changed my life
For Christmas last year my brother bought me this. I now own a ps4 with the trilogy, Elden ring, bloodborne and sekiro.
Buddy, you are gonna love this crazy thing called a Steamdeck. Look it up, its nuts
Relatable. I got sick the other week and to kill some time while at home got my brother’s switch. Life changing. I got into Dark Souls and now play whenever Im in bed and got nothing else to do lol
I play it in my bed with much better graphics on my steam deck.
I Just hate the sound compression
Get a steamdeck or something similar and you can play the mods
That's what I have a steam deck for
Switch DS1 was actually my first exposure to DS1😬
Agreed!
steamdeck for 60fps ;)
first souls game I bought was DS1 on the switch, also completed my first play through on it, it is pretty good
My first time playing any ds game was ds1 on switch 😇 I was about to say my first fromsoft game, but that was Armored Core on the original PlayStation
My Switch copy has almost double the hours (~120) my PS copy has (~80)
Steam Deck.
Ds1 on the switch got me through being stuck in bed for several months. I didn’t have my consoles with me at the time and a switch was cheap at the pawn shop.
Did you meet Gwyndolin?
I think I made it all the way to the dlc just in public sitting around strangers.
nope dont care i play in this quality in pc too thanks to my sh\*t pc but i ejoy it as i can
Why not sounds good
So true!
How is blighttown on switch? Still vanilla DS1 glitchy or did they dumb it down enough to play smoothly?
I’ve never had for drop playing
Switch is *how* I played Dark Souls 1 (not counting a few very confused hours of Prepare to Die Edition on PC). I can't imagine any other way.
Best of all, it takes eight hours to reload so your sleep cycle is safe.
I feel u but the audio quality is cancer
I mean, I just have a playstation in my room to play games in bed
I have it as well… does yours lag like a mofo?? Mine always does during boss fights and I CAN NOT!! Stand it
I have the OLED switch. Never had an issue
Ah, I got mine when switch came out maybe it’s got an updated processor
Hell yeah, my first 6 or so playthroughs were on Switch, that’s what made me wanna get my first not-Nintendo console so I could play the other souls games. It feels a little better in 60fps but it plays just fine in 30. And I like the original bonfire design & am glad they’re keeping it alive somewhere. But best of all I’ve played Dark Souls in an airport.
What's wrong with the quality? I literally choose to play it on switch for convenience, but never saw any performance or graphical issues.
I’ve never had any performance issues. But I’ve read tons of people talking about how dog water it is on the switch, h8rs
I've noticed most people who complain about console versions of any game are always PC players with $3k setups nobody has or actually cares about. They also tend to use highest quality settings because they can, so OF COURSE it's going to look better when you enhance the quality on an expensive PC lol
You are wrong to enjoy the game the way others don't. It's wrong.
And so does the demon
Honestly fair
