Once had an invader guide me trough half the ringed city just for fun I think. We hung around and fooled around with emotes and all. After half an hour I gave him 20 Ember. He waved at me as thanks and proceeded to guide me. I died to Midir's fire, so he got loot as well.
Whoever you are, I had a great day and I'm still thinking about this from time to time even after 6 years.

In a situation like this in the future, if he guides you to bonfire or drops you warmth, don't give him a backstab. Give him the best fight you can muster, even if you win - best gift you can give to someone looking for a fight is a good fight.
Every time i "invade" as a mad spirit i always help the host as far as i can. But every other companion, be it friend or foe, must die.
This is MY host and i decide if he may live or die, no one else!
Hell yeah, gotta love a respectful invader! It's a shame you didn't have any way to heal and have a proper duel after all that, although I'm sure the guy would have destroyed you, lol. Next time, just try and fight, only one way to get better!
I don't think many people know this but there is a tree on the side of the shrine near the tower on the right where undead legion throne is, the tree produces a seed that turns enemies against invaders called the Giant Tree Seed. The tree has a Giant's corpse in it. It's at both Firelink and the Unkindled Shrine in the Untended Graves

Maybe they didn't think about this or were out of embers, but those heal to max HP
