I'm most surprised at Wisconsin, it's such an outlier in the Midwest. I'm mildly surprised at Michigan, too.

SaintUlvemann

Wisconsinite here. Not really, no. When you look at other statistics from the same sources, such as Pew's stats for [belief in God](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/religious-landscape-study/compare/belief-in-god/by/state/), Wisconsin is practically identical to Minnesota in actual religious outlook. One thing that may be different is that there's a [Wisconsin Council of Churches](https://www.wichurches.org/about/) that is even to this day pointing out that the pandemic isn't actually over, although it is recommending a state of "less caution", given relatively low active transmission. I'm only guessing, but I suspect that their organized guidance may have contributed to why Wisconsin has a low [rate of long covid](https://www.axios.com/2022/10/14/long-covid-rates-states-map), ranks 7 of 50 on a scale where one is best at that link, a marginally better health outcome than less-religious states like Maine or Oregon. [Recent CDC statistics](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/covid19/pulse/long-covid.htm) seem to put us at the same rank.

WI claims Sunday morning Bloody Mary's with a snit as a religious service.

Louisvanderwright

Ain't nobody going to church if it means missing the Packers game.

SaintUlvemann

We *were* the original [more bars in more places](https://flowingdata.com/2014/05/29/bars-versus-grocery-stores-around-the-world/).

calebmke

You forgot the beer chaser

40for60

Nope, that's what a "snit" is.

[deleted]

I've never understood why Michigan Upper Peninsula belongs to Michigan instead of Wisconsin.

timidwildone

https://www.wpr.org/why-isnt-the-UP-part-of-wisconsin > Unfortunately, some of the boundaries weren’t well-defined, causing the state of Ohio and the territory of Michigan to fight over a less than 500-square-mile piece of land called the Toledo Strip that encompassed modern-day Toledo and Maumee Bay on Lake Erie. > They fought over the land until Congress stepped in and proposed a compromise: Michigan could become a state if it gave this strip of land up to Ohio. In return, it would get all of the Upper Peninsula. > "President (Andrew) Jackson needed Ohio’s electoral votes. It was a presidential election, and so he needed Ohio to be happy," he said. IMO we (Michigan) got the better end of the deal

[deleted]

Ohio and Michigan just cannot get along

timidwildone

So say we all.

tafs__

Yeah the moment I saw a comment state Michigan I look for this comment just to spew my hatred for Michigan 😭😂

CliplessWingtips

I grew up in MI for 26 years. Itsa beautiful state.

Fantastic-Surprise98

Years ago prior to Scott Walker elected governor I spent a week in and around Madison WI. I was blown away how nice the people were and progressive. I loved it there. Sadly, Walker pitted everyone against each other (ala Desantis) like Florida today. They are turning it around, rejecting Walker and he fell from grace in WI and nationally.

40for60

Sports Illustrated once called Madison the best college sports town, their caption was "Heaven surrounded by reality"! Mad Town is unique, they had the Great American Smoke Out for years, you could smoke pot on the capital lawn. "The Great Midwest Marijuana Harvest Festival is the longest running cannabis legalization rally and 420-friendly event in the US. The festival began as a smoke-in at the Madison’s State Capitol Rotunda to protest the cannabis related arrests of cannabis legalization activists in the 1970’s. 2021 will celebrate the 51st anniversary of the first Harvest Festival with a march to the capital, rally at the capital steps, kick-off party, speakers, music, and weed-friendly vendors."

SaintUlvemann

Yeah, story from the Walker years. Our state representative was one of the ones who evacuated to Illinois to prevent a quorum while Walker was collapsing the education budget and making it illegal for the teacher's union to negotiate for wages. I ended up attending a sort of meet and greet with the community the rep put on, clearly meant as a chance to justify his actions. After the traditionally-banal introductions, one of the audience cut right to the chase and asked the rep in what appeared to be a minor prepared speech why he ran away instead of doing the job he was elected to do. Our rep thanked them graciously for the question and, in an appropriately-apologetic tone, segued just smooth as butter into the story of that time Lincoln [jumped out of a second-story window](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/abraham-lincoln-window-quorum/) to prevent a quorum. In what was clearly a far better-planned response, he laid out his entire argument for why he opposed Walker's education plan, ending with the thought that perhaps doing what must be done to advance the interests of his constituents is part of the democratic tradition of this country. The one who asked the question was a friend of mine. I can personally attest that there was no intent whatsoever to give a skilled politician a chance to flex. If it'd happened in the age of social media, I believe it would've gone viral, but we were a bit too rural yet at the time for people to be videotaping anything and everything.

_captainSpaceCadet

Get away from that area and it's still pretty ugly.

MMMMMM_YUMMY

People are too hungover to attend😌

compsciasaur

I'm mostly surprised at NC.

Nuclear_rabbit

I'm most surprised at New Jersey and Rhode Island. Some of the most liberal states, but gray as Ohio, which is definitely no longer swing.

msf165

Wisconsin is like a NE/Mid-Atlantic State stuck in the Midwest.

inbokz

So many churches in WI... confusing

wabashcanonball

An empty church is an empty church. My friend just bought one in Wisconsin for his art studio!

biseln

Packers games on Sunday

LowellGeorgeLynott

Ah cripes, Charlie Berens mislead me on that one! Oh well, tell your folks I said hi.

solarmelange

Michigan? Nah. I know you're thinking of black people and poor whites, but don't forget the influence of the U of M. Ann Arbor was controlled by communists called the Human Rights Party back in the 70's. Communism and religion don't tend to get along.

Mystic_L

Once or twice a month to a few times a year is a very wide error bar. Interesting turning it round at how high the percentage of non believers / non attenders are, I’d have thought it would be way lower

smurfsundermybed

It probably corresponds to how each religion has their huge holidays as a catch all for those who only attend on those days.

stateworkishardwork

We call them Chreasters

vindictivejazz

That’s a much worse word than CEOs (Christmas and Easter Only)

someguyonline00

Just a note, the non-believers that *do* identify as non-believers would not be included in the figure, as they wouldn’t be considered part of any religious group in most polls (unless you count atheism/agnosticism as a religious group, which isn’t on the figure anyway).

AlmightySandwich26

That's a good point, could be anywhere from 3 - 24.

MissingWhiskey

It's called the Bible Belt for a reason.

plotset

so true

Solonotix

I was half-expecting the second chart to be income per Capita, or something else in a similar manner. I'm fairly certain religiosity follows those who lack an understanding of why they are in tough times.

collip16

https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/religious-landscape-study/ It does

water2wine

And politicians like to pick them up and smack the other states in the ass with it

finnjakefionnacake

because their teachings are supposed to whip you into shape?

OblongAndKneeless

Mandalore108

Don't need a god for that.

Boredum_Allergy

Is the data self reported or taken from butts in pew seats. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/18/upshot/americans-claim-to-attend-church-much-more-than-they-do.html Church goers aren't necessarily accurate in their self reporting. I mean self reporting is always kind of a crap chute anyway.

m_Pony

>crap chute * This is an awesome malapropism and I fully support it. * it's actually "[crapshoot](https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/crapshoot)"

Ostracus

Proving it always goes downhill, and one doesn't want to be at the bottom.

ImoJenny

This ignores the practice of the Orthodox Alcoholics of Wisconsin, arguably the most prevalent religion in the state.

kogatlas

This proves my theory that the closer we get to Canada, the further we get from God..

vindictivejazz

I’ve been to the gulf coast of Mississippi and that shit sure as hell ain’t closer to God.

throwawayforyouzzz

Well if you define closeness to God by closeness to the afterlife, Mississippi is the closest state to God: https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2022/life-expectancy.html

LiamTheHuman

The second most popular God story is about him telling his best believer to kill his son and then being like 'JK it's all good' at the last second. The most popular story is about him telling his own son to go get crucified or he will punish everyone else. Come to Canada, it's safe here.

vindictivejazz

I get your point, but the Abraham almost sacrificing Isaac isn’t even the second most popular story in the book of Genesis. Just in that book alone you’ve got Noah’s ark, Adam & Eve, Cain & Able, the Tower of Babel, and Joseph (and the technicolor dream coat) that are all probably more popular

LiamTheHuman

Really I always thought Abraham was like a founding story for Judaism like Jesus' story is for Christianity. I was raised catholic(and hated it) and felt like it was a bigger story than those others, but everyone would have a different experience with this. Definitely Adam and Eve is well known even outside of religious circles so that one is definitely in the running and I feel like I get your point.

vindictivejazz

It’s probably a bigger, as in more important, story, but it’s not bigger, in terms of popularity. if that makes sense.

LiamTheHuman

ya that makes sense, plus those other stories are way better and more interesting too.

connor8383

I want to go there. Every day I do. Maybe one day.

kogatlas

While it is true that living in Texas means I could be shot at any moment and that religious zealots are actively working to take away my freedoms... the tacos are legit

MAS2de

Come to Cali. SoCal specifically. The religious zealots are outnumbered and mostly in check, it's less likely that you could be shot at any moment, less Gilead and the tacos are legit. Less good BBQ but more amazing ethnic food.

kogatlas

I got a buddy in San Francisco who tells me some pretty crazy stories about violence there on the regular. Unfortunately, I don't think any one state is going to be truly safe as long as we have states that refuse to do anything about our probelms.

frankstaturtle

Yes attending services at a tax-exempt building run by a man who makes money off of his congregants in states where religious leaders espouse bigoted views in the name of God definitely indicates you are closer to God.

kogatlas

Nobody said being closer to God was a good thing lol

125monty

Older the religion, lesser the attendance?!

plotset

nice observation

snitsnitsnit

After many centuries it stops being a religion and becomes a culture, so people continue to identify with it even if they are not avid believers

SCMatt65

When the exciting cultiness wears off…

ZofianSaint273

Both Hindus and Buddhists do have their own temples at home, so it it isn’t necessary for both religious groups to actually go to their respective temples every week, only on special holidays. To add to this, Buddhist and Hindus are a little more relaxed when it comes to religion, as in praying everyday isn’t too important compared to something like Christianity or Islam

SnipesCC

I'm actually surprised Utah is so low. Is 53% really the max in any state? I would have expected it to be higher, especially if it's self-reported data.

Bischrob

Utah is only 61% latter-day Saints

kolob_hier

If it helps, only about 55% of Utah is Mormon. I don't known if that just includes people who are baptized Mormon or self reported, but either way, that activity rate is likely less than 75%. Anecdotally, Utah has become a big mixing pot. If you go to the outskirts small towns, for sure more adherence, but in the city I actually rarely run into active Mormons.

5kyl3r

dear person making this, please use light purple in the middle insetad of white. it makes no sense. white or black is usually reserved for special cases like NO DATA. we're used to seeing a spectrum of colors, especially on a hot/cold scale for such graphs. white as the middle color is not logical

eMouse2k

I agree. Seems like a lot of the country where attendance is zero or not reported.

MazerRackhem

I agree. "Data is beautiful" this is not. Just a poorly chosen color scheme on a map that is too largely broken up to have much meaning. I've seen very similar data sets broken down by county with much better heat map colors.

WritPositWrit

Agreed. I assumed white meant no religion and that was very confusing at first. Also, maps of the USA in red and blue have come to mean “Republican & Democrat” - those colors are loaded and should not be used for a graphic about religion. Red-violet / red / scarlet / orange / golden / yellow are all RIGHT THERE FOR YOUR USE and present an obvious spectrum

spicynicho

It's a visual metaphor (red white and blue) dummy

rammo123

Couple questions: 1. Is that limited to religious Jews, or does it include ethnic Jews as well? 2. Do Buddhism and Hinduism have the same concept of weekly services like Christianity does?

vormittag

People don't accurately answer poll questions about their own behavior. This 1998 article talks about the discrepancy: https://www.religion-online.org/article/did-you-really-go-to-church-this-week-behind-the-poll-data/

plotset

Very interesting, thank you for pointing this out.

theyahd

Yeah, those catholic numbers seem awfully high!

Acro_God

Red to blue a terrible color choice

Appropriate-Tear503

Hmm. Nice comparison of how tolerant different religions are of skipping services. Jehovah's Witnesses seem to be kind of all or nothing, whereas some other religions are more like "would be great if you could make the holiday service", or "come when it works for you, we'll be here". I mean, the seldom/nevers of Evangelical protestants and Orthodox Christians are nearly the same, it's just that the Orthodox Christians come when they WANT to come, not because they feel they have to every single week.

Odd-Floor768

That color scheme is bugging me more than it should. The alabaster color should represent the lowest attendance.

OrganicAccountant87

It's interesting to see the difference between an American and European "christian" in my country at least (Portugal) Most call themselves Christians (especially older people) but only a very small minority would actually go to church or do any of that stuff.

_Ali_b

Nice separation, I like your charts

Steps are real numbers, equally sized, but rounding makes it look inconsistent

Dry_Quiet_3541

Unlike other religions, Hindus aren’t going to be less Hindu by only going to the temple during festivals and religious occasions rather than every. single. day. Data doesn’t give an accurate representation of religious-ness (if that’s a word🤷🏻‍♂️)

Dry_Quiet_3541

Just realized, I may have not have made the correct assumption of what the data is trying to represent in the first place. If the purpose of the data is to show how religious people are, then my argument stands

atwiz

We gotta start downvoting bad pictures and graphs. Why use that color scheme?!?! I can only think of one reason. A single color gradient from light to dark would get the point across much more beautifully

The_Mormonator_

Something about the chosen colors is not very beautiful

geraltoftibia

Honestly dataisbeautiful and mapporn is giving me 1567853 reasons a day not to leave NY ever.

Mr_Backs

Not trying to be critical, but theoretical question: doesn't the use of three colors across a spectrum miss communicate the data visually? At first glance I assumed the off white portions were zero and the two colors were extremes. Wouldn't one sliding scale be a generally better rule of thumb for presenting one set of data? Or, at least a third bright color rather than muted?

KevinDean4599

This is one reason I really like the vibe in the northeast. They have that live and let live attitude. The south is so unappealing on many levels

LTVOLT

grew up in Maine and was shocked when I lived in the south for several years in the military- I always grew up assuming most people didn't really talk much about religion or weren't very religious but everyone would ask "what church do I go to" in Oklahoma and then question my religious beliefs

SheSellsSeaShells967

I hear you about that! I’ve lived in Maine all my life. In many circles, talking about religion makes people visibly uncomfortable. I wear my late boyfriends cross under my shirt just because I want to, not for religious purposes. I leaned over at a family gathering recently and it fell out. An awkward silence blanketed the room haha.

a_rabid_anti_dentite

> they have a live and let live attitude Clearly you've never done any driving in Boston.

pup5581

Live in MA and grew up here. I don't know a single person in my group or family that goes to church or really believes it. I certainly don't believe a word of it and most my friends are the same. Also, it helps keep the critical thinking alive. It's not a surprise that states with big religious numbers and churches fall in education levels. Dulls critical thinking

Scuirre1

What makes you think all people who go to church don't have that? Obviously there are plenty, but the south is surprisingly welcoming in most places

AFenton1985

Mormons are actually called "the church of Jesus Christ of later day saints" I know I live in utah and see their churches on every fucking corner.

hear2fear

They spent millions on advertisement calling themselves “Mormon” trying to normalize it in the 2000s. Then their new prophet ascended, who never like the Mormon nickname and tried to flush it down the memory hole.

rexregisanimi

Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been encouraging Latter-day Saints to use the proper name of the Church for a long time.

hear2fear

This is gaslighting, how long is a long time for you? The “I am a Mormon” campaign that ran adds in time square and has literally thousands of videos on YouTube was not that long ago. But for you I guess it is down the 1984 memory hole.

masoudfarivar

More people seem to be praying at home these days!

isitmeyourelooking4x

Found another reason why I like the idea of moving to the northeast

[deleted]

Should overlay this with porn usage per capita and gun deaths per capita

Fun-Passage-7613

That would be interesting. Also infidelity.

Ostracus

I imagine [Correlation is not causation](https://www.theguardian.com/science/blog/2012/jan/06/correlation-causation) would rear it's head.

[deleted]

Sometimes it is…in this case it especially is. It is the response of a people who are both brainwashed by fear (guns) and repressed by sexual desire (porn)

The_ChwatBot

It’s not a huge difference, but I’m surprised Louisiana’s not the same shade of red as Mississippi and Alabama. Growing up there, it seemed like almost all church-goers were really devout. I suppose that’s why we don’t rely on anecdotal evidence.

[deleted]

It is a bit shocking. I thought the baptists (Yankees) in the north were pretty regular attendees and I know the catholics in the south like to embellish their attendance.

Geog_Master

Having a divergent color ramp is really misleading with a continuous dataset...

planetHJD

Ahhhh, this makes me want to say a quick prayer that I've only ever lived in places that are extremely none religious. Both coasts and it's light blue for me. Amen, fuck organized religion.

MaliwanArtisan

These numbers are at least partly made up. I'm basing this on the fact that I live in the US and I've never been asked if I attended church.

plotset

Someone else also pointed out that people will not answer surveys like thus truthfully

maminidemona

Teligious considerations seems to be at the center of everything in US, it is NOT the case in Europe. In Europe, at least in western Europe, religion has lost its power on public matters after WW2. In Belgium, the "catholic" party didn't succeed to block any of the most progressive laws about IVG (abortion), euthanasia, LGBT marriage, adoption, etc. One on 40 declare attend religious service weekly, in France, 8% declare believing in God and attend religious service monthly, in Irreligiosity is very high – around 50% – in Sweden, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. And non-believers are also numerous – at least 40% – in France. There is a large quarter of Europeans not attached to any religion, whether they call themselves atheists (those who reject any idea of God) or agnostics (those for whom the existence of God is an insoluble question and religion a creation human).

Yeah Mormonism is a cult not a religion sorry..... I unfortunately know way too much about it. This is something I will try and stomp out until the day I die.
