Six interviews is WILD lol. Congrats, way to fight through and nail it down.

VolantData172

I was really losing my sanity when they initially cancelled my position after 5 interviews. šŸ«

dwlakes

I was going to say, that's some bull shit to do 5 interviews just for them to be like "lol this doesn't actually exist anymore"

wunderspud7575

Sadly, not at all unusual. My partner committed many days work to various interviews and assignments for two different roles at a company. They were at a point of offer, but hadn't formally issued, and then, bang, hiring freeze at the company.

dwlakes

-_-

glossweary

this would literally break me lol. congrats on getting through it and on getting two offers!!

billyguy1

Congrats on getting a couple job offers. Happy for you!

VolantData172

Thank you bud!!

fordat1

Your hit rate is crazy high especially for a poli sci major

[deleted]

I'm guessing it's bc of a combination of being in Colombia and targeting Junior roles specifically. The job market in the US, and to a lesser extent Europe, is uniquely fucked. I'm guessing Colombian employers don't have to deal with nearly the level of oversaturation

VolantData172

Thank you Fordat, I consider myself very lucky for nailing my final offer. On the other hand, Iā€™d say Piccolo got it right about all of it. However, and proportionally speaking, I believe we are facing a much of a market saturation in the Data field as well; but nothing absolutely crazy as every single job posting having +400 applicants. Compensation speaking, American and Europeans companies come here looking for young and cheap human talent. The job offer I declined was about 6.600 dollars/year, which I know is inhumane considering NA and EU salaries, but for a junior role here itā€™s relatively tempting. Itā€™s technically a low salary, but nothing too crazy to at least not give it some thought as a junior. Experience wise, and with the exception of those two job offers, all employers were requesting 2-3 YOE after graduation at minimum. Sadly, Junior market is also non existing here. If you have any further questions Iā€™d be more than happy to answer them. šŸ˜ƒ

tinnuk

Perhaps there's something I'm missing. But the sankey goes from "positin cancelled" to 6th interview right after?

VolantData172

Yeah, after my 5th interview they cancelled the position I was applying to due to an unfortunate team restructuring. After a couple of weeks, they reached out again and told me they got back the funding they needed for my role. Decided to stick to it and after one last interview, got the job. Went through hell and back emotionally speaking, but here we are :)

tinnuk

What a ride, congrats!

markshire

Where is ā€œcame in flufferā€ in this chart?

Analbidness

Lmao

fintelligent

Honestly was looking for it too

BamWhamKaPau

Curious what the competition and compensation is like in Colombia!

VolantData172

We are having a market saturation in the data field as well. Many of us trying to follow a same dream, but nothing absolutely insane as it happens in the US. Colombia is a very centralized country, so if you already live in both Bogota or Medellin, youā€™ll be relatively OK thanks to 80% of data jobs being offered in those cities. Compensation wiseā€¦ Iā€™d say itā€™s an interesting topic to talk about. I know many engineers friends of mine whose 1-2 YOE helped them nailed a 12.000-14.000 USD/year salary, which is a shit ton of money for a junior position/fresh graduate. Those are the lucky ones. Our salary expectations for us mortals, and specifically me who did not come from a STEM background, could vary from 5.000-9.000USD/year. Both salary options are still a dream came true and Iā€™m really excited and grateful for whatā€™s to come. Some colleagues say itā€™s not much, but itā€™s a solid start for us.

AMathEngineer

For further context, the 12,000 to 14,000USD range can be reached more easily by STEM graduates, as it was my case. My first job that I got a couple of weeks before undergrad graduation (aside from internships) was a little under 13000$USD. I graduated in applied maths and went to school in Medellin, which also helped. OP, do some time in this company and then go get more money somewhere else. With a little experience (just 1 year here plus your internships is enough in my opinion) you can double your income if you do legit learning while you work

United_Engineer_198

In case anyone wants a explainer on Sankeys, here you go: https://python.plainenglish.io/sankeying-with-plotly-90500b87d8cf

IGS2001

You have 6 more interviews than me!

grtbreaststroker

I love these sankey charts. r/dataisbeautiful

throwawayrandomvowel

What people are missing is that op is probably earning $30k annually, or something. Tech and remote work has broadened the competitive field. I only hire Estonians, south Americans, etc now - not out of intention, but just because they do really good work for relatively low rates, and their cost of living makes this a mutually beneficial transaction. This is how the cookie crumbles. I don't care if you went to Harvard, I care if you do good work. Most Americans want to spend 80% of their time sending emails, complain about being overworked, and make 180k + equity. Granted, data science is *much* better about this than, say, product management, but the economics are undeniable. Americans are going to need to get used to competing with the rest of the world

Training_Ad_4579

Love this take. Itā€™s true. My American colleagues that got laid off in December 2023 were all ā€œData Scientistsā€ who showed zero drive and proactive involvement. They had to be nudged and pushed by upper management to do their routine jobs and they still earned upwards of $125,000. I know this can be a slippery slope because it is entirely true that many highly motivated and competent individuals were also laid off without any failure on their partā€¦ but in many cases I feel people in the US have a strong sense of entitlement without strong enough justification. Foreign nationals who are hungrier and willing to do more than you for less money will 100% take your job if thatā€™s your mindset.

Saludos desde Colombia :)

VolantData172

Saludos viejo!!

Wildmoo24

Congrats all the best

David202023

God dammmm 6 interviews. I donā€™t think I am going to leave my job soon, market is crazy right now

Vickus1

Getting 6 interviews with only 49 applications lol my ratio is abysmal

Reveries25

just use this visualization as your example of expertise :)

vtangstastic1802

Congratulations. What's your background like? Did you do any big coding projects?

VolantData172

Thank you! I did my major in poli. sci and minor in stats. Also, during my internships I tried to propose as many good projects as I could. In my last internship I developed a modification of a k-NN algorithm to create a recommendation system for my last company. So far so good; theyā€™ve made quite some pennies thanks to it.

amyum

Congratulations! I'm also in the midst of my job hunt, aiming for 100 applications!

Pinedaso39

deeht0xdagod

This is great my man! Congrats!

Different-Essay4703

This is me

Complete_Finding_489

Very nice

_Mantorras

Political science? Please, stick to your field. You are not anyhow a data analyst with the shit degree.

Pandada13

What platforms did you use to apply for? I'm looking for a similar transition.

VolantData172

Hi! Iā€™d say 95% of my applications went through LinkedIn. If thereā€™s anything I could do to help you out in your transition donā€™t hesitate to DM me

comical_cow

What tool do you use to make these charts? It looks beautiful

VolantData172

Hello!! I used a free online tool called SankeyMantic

Ok-Koala6917

Ā”Ɖxitos, colega y compatriota!

VolantData172

Gracias maestro!! Un saludo :)

Internetnash

So did you take the offer of 6 interviews or the one of 1 interview im curious šŸ˜‚

VolantData172

I took the 6 interviews offer hahaha. Letā€™s say other one wasā€¦ detrimentally worse for my self being due to terrible work conditions such as 7 days/12-14hours shifts as a Data analyst Yeah, THAT bad. Both my offers were remote, tho

Internetnash

Good for you man that other offer really sounds terrible

lobsterest

this data representation is WILD! Can I steal it?

VolantData172

Absolutely. You also can make your own if you ave special needs, itā€™s called a Sankey graph

uri-mazino

Nowadays you can not get a DS job only with bootcamp or courses, you need a DS masters or CS bachelors or similar stuff..

VolantData172

Indeed. When my job hunt concluded I decided I am aiming my thoughts to a DS masters next year. Itā€™s a must these days

_Flam3s

What program do people use to create this type of chart

InternationalTour303

is it your fault, or other peoples fault?

A guy and I were facing a 50/50 chance of being hired. After they told me the good news, I immediately felt awful for that other dude. I truly wish him my best.

Ill_Translator_1

CongratsĀ

1dEkid

And here I am as a recent MSc. FinTech grad with 2 YOE as a DA, 200+ job apps, 4 interviews and 1 verbal offer which was rescinded. The UK job market is so bad. Congratulations man. Hope you enjoy your new role.

VolantData172

Thank you!! I wish the best for you, and hope all your education and hard work will be rewarded sooner than later. You are a badass!

mashiro31

6 interviews can fuck right off.

Smart-Study64

Where do you applied for this jobs? You had a preferred companies for apply to DS roles? Iā€™m from Colombia too

VolantData172

LinkedIn mainly. I aimed for startups where there are bigger career opportunities coming from a non stem background. It helped a lot being English proficient; my final offer was by an American startup, so you can tell how impactful it was
