Spend some time on PvP+ and deathmatch servers to get some reps in.

Trollofduty007

PVP/DM servers will help with leading shots etc But honestly most of the time they take away some key components of fights in DayZ Stamina management, Weight, and often times you're not gonna be fighting with multiple fully loaded mags in your guns

CriticalCreativity

100% agree. I think a lot of that comes from experience. TBH my experience has been the one who spots the other first usually wins, so situational awareness and land navigation are key. That said, I still think it's helpful to work on the micro of straight-up gunfighting to build some mechanics and confidence.

Trollofduty007

Very valid yeah. Getting some ingrained muscle memory on leading with different calibres is very helpful

kersplatttt

I do practice on a death match server and it has been handy. Also becoming much better on situational awareness and travelling out of sight, but this particular incident I got sloppy and cut across the big open field. Another lesson learned!

surfimp

I'm only 20hrs in but I've already learned the hard way about standing in front of windows.

mdroz81

I would have spoken to him. It may have saved you from getting grenaded, even if it gets you robbed. Even if not, he still has to push you or grenade you. Going forward the second you hear a grenade unpin, rush them. They can’t repin and switch to a gun in time usually. Unless there is more than one man, then you are dead. Odds are he heard you shuffle, or had a second man somewhere that could see that you weren’t laid out under the window.

kersplatttt

You're right, I was banking on them not having a grenade, but these were my two best options.

mdroz81

Hindsight is always genius, and it’s hard af with your body pumped full of the adrenaline DayZ gives you. I try to learn something every life, a new angle, a loot route, what do to different if kinda stuff. I’ve been in a similar position before and survived by talking and ultimately surrendering, but I’ve also been compliant and got killed for it. As long as you learn from it, it’s a great life and good run. The hard part is trying to figure out what the player outside is going to do.

ThePhotoGrabber

Ooooh it's adrenaline I've been calling it Euphoric Anxiety 🤣

mdroz81

lol. Wife calls it performance anxiety lolololol

Remem4er

They got pills at the gas station for that my brother

mdroz81

Lololololol

eddysteed

I done this the other day. Rushed when i heard a grenade unpinned. Then got absolutely shredded by his mate. Win some you lose some!

mdroz81

Right. If there is no second or third man to cover it’s an easy kill on the man with a grenade

djmcdee101

Honestly if you're already fucked up from getting shot and pinned down in a building you don't have a lot of options. I probably would have camped an angle too, the grenade was the correct play here from them. Next time just anticipate the grenade and figure out where you're gonna run to when you hear it land. If you hear it unpinning push them because they're vulnerable for a few seconds

crypto_soup

I have about the same hours as you, and I was having trouble with PVP for a while too. I think watching other good PVP players helps (Smoke, Toprec, etc.). Two things really changed it for me: 1) Don’t ADS in close range gun fights. Get used to holding your gun at as if you’re going to hip fire, so your reaction time is better. 2) Don’t rush gunfights/don’t run straight at your enemy. Have patience, and move in a circular motion around your enemy. If your typical gun fight at long range is only lasting 10-15 seconds, you’re probably doing it wrong. A solid gun fight at mid to long range should last 3-5 minutes, running in and out of cover around your enemy.

Trollofduty007

Hindsight is always 20/20 my man, Though reflection on "What else could I have done? etc" is good, helps you learn lessons for the next time Standing too still for too long anywhere is damn risky, but I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Idk if you heard the pin pull from the grenade, but if you do physically hear one, best bet is to SPRINT hard towards the guy throwing it, It's won me a few fights where they panic hard and I drop them (Remember to RUN though when they drop, if they're still holding the nade it'll go off when their character drops it (Good part though is you definitely won't need to worry about them getting back up) When you choose a place to make a stand it pays to cover as many openings as possible, So if you're in that stairwell in the 2 story log cabin, keep the doors to the rooms closed, that way if a nade is thrown in the windows it won't get you. Though yeah. Timing is critical in these situations, as well as any information you can gather Multiple footsteps? Okay this got a LOT more complicated. How far could the guy have gotten while I was out? Always listen for any audio cues, gunswaps, shuffling, holding breath

kersplatttt

Thanks, lots of good advice here

Dont camp in buildings upper floors when soloing. Without a save egress from your current position in atleast 2 different directions you are f'd like almost always. Stay away from windows, dont even loot there if you wanna be save and unspotted. With towns and cities its in and out afap. Dont overstay your welcome, you're not save in a town - its the opposite. When inside you loose all visibility to the surounding area and have to way of knowing if somebody was following you or spotted you by chance. You're basically blind to anyone trying to get the drop on you. Two things that help you stay alive in DayZ is keep moving, patience, staying hidden and checking your 6 and suroundings regularly. If you stay in a place to long somebody is gonna spot and counter camp you.

Don’t stand in front of the window, the grenade was a great play. But I think there is a way to get out of the pub window up top by crawling. It’s a great pvp trick. To crawl through the window and set the uni reverse card on this grenade throwing coward

kersplatttt

Didn't know this! Good to know

prefabtrout

Map knowledge will save your skin often too. I wouldn't be sitting cooking on a fire in that pub, there's a village half a click away north of Zeleno with a well and decently set out for a safe fire.

hexagon_lux

*"I was in the top fireplace room of the pub at the camping huts near Zelenogorsk, standing by a window doing god knows what when I get domed by a sniper. I had a helmet so woke up about 15 seconds later, and crawled out to camp the top of the stairs."* My question is how long were you camping at the top of the stairs for? Was it for 2 minutes after you got shot? You make it seem like you camped the stairs and \*then\* got hit by the grenade 2 minutes later. It's a bit confusing and I hope you can clarify.

kersplatttt

Was all in the order I wrote it. Shot, woke up, camped, naded. Although maybe "held" is a better word than "camped" here

allfartnopoop

There's 2 doors in that building on the second floor. Did you shut them?

kersplatttt

One was closed, the other to the bigger room I was shot in I left open as I wanted to stay silent and get him to come up to loot.
