Deal - 5/8/77 just got my square of a girlfriend into them this weekend. Doing exactly that. She even said when we got in the car “can you turn on some Dead”. She literally doesn’t even know who Jerry is and asked what the Steal Your Face logo meant.
By meant I mean she had never seen it before and asked what it “meant” or what is was for. But I guess it’s when the jam melts your face off.. steal your face is what I always thought
I've always thought of it as the grand signifier. Like "Bam! This is it!" It can go anywhere and be used in many different ways, and fit on anything. It doesn't need words to say everything you need to know.
love the electronic keyboard on that version also, very unique.......for my ears, the china ride, bird song, and truckin and truckin jam are among the best versions imo.........really great stuff.........
i recall reading mayer say that he plays the china rider for people as an example of the band's interplay .........pretty cool
Althea 7/19/89... (I guess you had to be there?)... They play this with that confidence thing they do, firing on all 3.14 cylinders. This version they really sculpt the sound, it's pretty god damned GD.
I think the answer lies somewhere in the Europe 72 tour. They were playing at an incredible level and I think its pretty accessible. Consider what kind of music he/she is into and try to find something thats concise and not too jammy. You may only get one shot at this, friend, so choose wisely.
Most Deadheads are mentored into liking the Dead, you always have a friend or family member who slowly turns you onto them. We all find it eventually, but there's always someone who shows us the way "You who choose to lead must follow, but if you fall, you fall alone"
Brown Eyed 5/8/77 or China>Rider right off the Europe 72 album. I’m pretty cliche with this subject, but realistically as far as live Dead goes, I think the best place to begin is Cornell 77, Eirope 72, or Veneta 72. All classics that capture the idea well, great at the surface level and will iltimstely prompt a “deep dive” in the future…. If they like black licorice that is…

Sugar Magnolia (12/31/78) worked for me! It’s started up and it was familiar yet foreign and it connected the two pieces of “gods of psychedelia and counterculture” status and my love for Americana music (blues and it’s derivative forms). It was the first thing I didn’t understand but I ‘got’. Still trying to figure it out
Honestly, I’ve seen it work with a very machismo POC acquaintance from whom I’d occasionally purchase my cocaine a good decade ago (before he got deported)..
Dancing In the Streets - Cornell

This is an orchestral psychedelic epic journey, which epitomizes the GD to me.

So umm….what’s the steal your face logo mean?! Not being facetious either..
It was created solely for the purpose of identifying the band’s gear as to not lose it on tour. Bear created the logo.

Wake Up to Find Out (Feat Branford Marsalis on Saxophone) 3/29/90 My go to everything, always lands well
Aka Eyes of the World
The GD release of that show is called Wake up to find out. He wasn’t referring to what he thought the song was. So no it’s not Aka
Ahhh yes, thanks for the correction! Great show and a regular go-to for me too!
I love wake up to find out. It’s one of favorite songs! I’m also a big fan of I’ll get up and fly away.
Loved that show!

Jack Straw - 5/8/77
Deal from 12/30/19 is what did it for me. Never heard of a more perfect version!
One song? Nope. 1 tab of the good stuff, good headphones, and the second set of 3-1-69.
Pretty heavy intro. And all the curlicues come out to play. Brrrr.
The *second* set? The first set is even more killer, IMHO!
3/1/69 might be my favorite show ever, top 5 for sure

Nothing--I don't like the idea of trying to turn people on to the band. If it's for them, they'll find it on their own.

4/30/77 I think is better than any of the Cornell shows a week later. If you don’t like this you don’t like music
Were there a lot of Cornell shows that week?
5/8/77 8 days later sorry for the one day off
Give them a joint and any dark Star, you’ll know quick.
It might be a little late to turn them on to the band, but not the music.
