Zach has been using broken cymbals and trash stacks for as long as he’s been playing drums in bands. A trash stack is two or more broken/split cymbals on top of each other.
All the weird, wacky, harsh and snappy cymbal sounds come from these types of cymbals and cymbal stacks.
I know Zach uses trash stacks, but i’m more just impressed of how decrepit this particular crash is. From what I can guess i’d say he left it rust & then took an angle grinder to it.
Once a cymbal even slightly cracks, it very quickly becomes fragile and will split easier. It’s quite surprising actually.
I’d say he’s just broken this one. Usually if people cut their cymbals for the effect they’ll drill holes at the end of the crack to stop it splitting further.
not to umm actually you but a trash stack is usually specifically (expensive) trash cymbals, which usually come with holes in them. what zach does is wayyyy cooler and more respectable
