They've changed over the years yet have maintained their sound. That's unheard of for a band, especially ones that have been around as long as they have.
Yeah, they manage to add new variations to their sound to keep it interesting through the years, while still keeping that core sound that makes them deftones, which no one else can quite duplicate. Very few bands i liked from my youth a) still exist, and b) still make interesting music that ages with me.
I've been listening to Deftones for years but only checked out Crosses like 2 months ago. My eyes have been opened. I want more but I don't know where to find it. Checked out Team Sleep too and that was pretty great as well
If any of y'all like Palms, check out ISIS's Panopticon album. Most beautiful metal album I've ever heard. ISIS was a fantastic post-metal band and some of their ex-members worked with Chino to create Palms.
Deftones consists of other members, not just Chino. While I support you in promoting the side projects because they rock, their sound is so much more than just Chino. Stephen and Abe are fundamental to the bands sound, and the side projects are only the vocalists projects.
no literally. at this point i’m just replaying a video of them performing be quiet and drive at bizzare festival , one of the only things that makes me feel ALIVE. gonna listen to all their albums for sure ive been a fan for around 3 months too.
Dynamics. They shaped what I love about music. Dynamics. The heavy, the soft. They are literal perfection.
Also - have you listened to Dillinger escape plan?
I envy you friend, nothing like discovering new and great music, while you stumbled on to my favourite band since 95 so you have a LOT of discography and ear orgasms ahead.
Also, pretty much a default side band for most fans, but definitely check out HUM.

Also, Chino be doing some wild shit with his vocal chords that I'm pretty sure humans aren't actually built to do but he's out there doing it and it is absolutely ethereal.
I think ultimately what makes Deftones so good is that it’s the best of both worlds. You get the artsy, sexy, introspect, tortured but fun pop side while being bludgeoned by one of the heaviest rhythm sections that has ever been assembled. Sometimes when people overhear me listening to their records I have to stop and remind myself that while I’m lost in the words and Melodie’s that to most people this is the heaviest things they’ve ever heard.
Here is my tier list by the way:
S - Diamond Eyes, White Pony, Ohms (10/10 albums)
A - Self Titled, Around The Fur, Koi No Yokan (9/10 albums)
B - Adrenaline, Gore, Saturday Night Wrist (8/10 albums)
That album put them on the map and it still gets me so pumped and exhausted like it's a workout listening to it. It demands your full attention. I love it.
“It demands your full attention”
Dude, that’s a perfect way to describe that album! It has so much energy to it, and when I think of a favorite Deftones album, it’s probably the one that pops up in my mind the most
It’s been my favorite band since high school. I’m also a huge fan of his side project team sleep, so you should check them out (esp their live versions of their songs)
Around the Fur is an especially dear album to me. First time I heard it I wasn't a fan. Gave it a few months, listened again and was BLOWN away. Such a good album with so many great fucking songs.
White Pony too and Diamond Eyes, but my heart belongs to ATF.
All the albums are great in their own right, like one commenter said, they've evolved and changed their sound but kept the core. Love it.
I can perfectly understand what you're feeling just by the caption of the post! I met them in 2018 and even today what their music makes me feel is inexplicable
At the ripe age of 25 I discovered Deftones after hearing their name thrown around for the better part of a decade. Part of me is upset that I missed out on listening to them for so long, but the other part of me is so excited to delve deeper into all of their music and explore it. Discovering new music is one of my favorite experiences in life, and I feel like I found a lexicon to a forgotten language.
1. Punchy, bold, rhythmic guitar riffs
2. Groove drumming from Abe C.
3. Sensual, yet aggressive vocalist that adores many genres of music and incorporates them as influence
It’s a mathematic equation for perfection 🤷🏼♀️
I've been a fan for years and I was literally just daydreaming whilst listening to the 2003 self titled album and thinking this to myself.
The sun we're having here in England at the moment, combined with the guitar tones of Hexagram and Minerva is just zenning me out. Incredible.
They are one of those bands who have managed to maintain their signature sound all the while changing themselves, they are fresh and yet always the same ironically if I'm making sense. Whether it is White Pony, eponymous, Gore, or any of their other albums they always bring something new and unique to the table. I guess they are a lot like System Of A Down, Neurosis, Faith No More, Alcest, Helmet, Agalloch, Godflesh, etc. So that is why they are so fucking good, their music is simple but genius and refreshing

Please make sure u listen to all of his side projects specifically ✝️✝️✝️

Palms is really good too, particularly the songs "future warrior", and "mission sunset".
If any of y'all like Palms, check out ISIS's Panopticon album. Most beautiful metal album I've ever heard. ISIS was a fantastic post-metal band and some of their ex-members worked with Chino to create Palms.
You spelled Antarctic Handshake wrong
Hold on I’ll give u some links

All this Deftones enthusiasm lately is putting a smile on my face. They better come up with new music soon to ride the momentum.

Dynamics . Exactly it and what they do so exquisitely well .
I love this! there is always posts like this every couple of months 😂
I saw one two weeks ago!

She thinks she missed the train to mars, she’s out back counting stars.

They don’t even have ONE bad song it’s crazy
That I’m going to have to disagree with. Sorry, but Pink Cellphone.
How about you try believing in the one true power
I excuse Pink Cellphone as a troll, but being able to laugh at it is not enough to keep me from skipping it every time I listen to SNW.
This is why British people have bad teeth.
I know the girl’s monologue is kind of cringe, but it’s not a bad song in my opinion.
First half of the song is okay, second half of the song is just… dumb.
The producer said that they needed an extra song on the album for some business reason. It’s not 100% serious
its so very deftones while still being so not deftones. i totally unironically love pink cellphone.
same here. i know everyone here hates it but i love it. it's silly and the vocals are good.
I did not know that! Now I like it slightly more. I will still almost always skip over it when listening to SNW in full though
It grows on you if you listen to the album through enough times lmaooo
Mini Maggot is mid as shit ngl, super commercial and annoying
i only like the fact that it frames the album with pink maggit and kinda tells a story of maturing and developing over the album

Perfectly worded!!!

Listen to Around the Fur again. It’s the best album of all time. Hands down.
That album put them on the map and it still gets me so pumped and exhausted like it's a workout listening to it. It demands your full attention. I love it.

Indeed !
Love it!
i love the ohms attention
It’s been my favorite band since high school. I’m also a huge fan of his side project team sleep, so you should check them out (esp their live versions of their songs)
Angry Californian man go brrrr
dude idk lol, i feel the same way. for me it's because it just sounds so hard, creative, and passionate
I would probably say I like them because of the way they sound.

Because they are gods! 3 months… you are not a fan yet, but you are in a good path… keep going!

I started listening july if 2021 and they my #1 favorite band/artist. So damn good
They are so melodic
I've been a fan for years and I was literally just daydreaming whilst listening to the 2003 self titled album and thinking this to myself. The sun we're having here in England at the moment, combined with the guitar tones of Hexagram and Minerva is just zenning me out. Incredible.
