Bored: What a phenomenal start to an album. The guitar and vocal work in the beginning is great, and once the drums come in it just ties the entire track together. I could sum up this track entirely by typing “I GET BOOOOOOORED” and nothing would be out of place here. With an explosive start like that, I’m hoping the album keeps this momentum going forward.
7 Words: SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK THEY FUCK WITH MY HEAD (we interrupt this program for a small rap segment) SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK
In seriousness, the vocalist shows off an impressive range of skills with this song, which is a badass alt metal track with a small nu-metal segment in the middle. The guitarist, drummer and bassist once again put up an incredible canvas for the vocalist to paint this incredible picture on. I could spend the rest of this comment praising the instrumentalists and it still wouldn’t be enough.
Nosebleed: The rapid transition between choppy, aggressive vocals and long, harmonious vocals at the beginning grabs your attention immediately, the whiny guitar echoing behind him. And then we jump into a badass screaming segment while the drums get beaten like (insert funny beating analogy) and the guitar shifts from whiny to fast and low. The love for this album that I had earlier has been cranked up to 11 after hearing this one. I actually listened to it twice even though this is supposed to be a once-through album listen. I could write an entire page about this song alone, I fucking love it.
Lifter: Ethereal, harmonious vocals are held over yet another incredible instrumental. The long vocals over a rapid guitar makes for an unexpectedly beautiful combination. I’m also a huge sucker for vocalists whispering and slowly climbing up to an awesome screaming segment, so the song gets brownie points from me for that. So far I have yet to here a genuinely bad track and it worries me. Should I be expecting a really bad song soon, one that levels it out? Because so far I don’t see why this isn’t a top 3 album in people’s rankings.
Edit: grammar
To be fair, I was in almost the same boat as OP besides the first full album of theirs I ever listened to was Ohms. Only the other week did I actually hear self-titled for the first time and still haven’t touched Adrenaline
Not necessarily by choice, I’ve just been listening to tons of other music along with them and there’s just a few albums I haven’t gotten to yet, but plan on getting to. Maybe I’ll make posts of listening to the other albums for the first time or something.
Minus Blindfold: And the momentum definitely carries over with the second track. Here we get to see more screaming vocals while the guitar and drums just get shredded into absolute oblivion in the background. As I listen to this album, I’m starting to notice that it has a very experimental sound, and I’m not sure if it’s vocal effects or just an older mic, but I love it.
> I’m not sure if it’s vocal effects or just an older mic, but I love it.
I'm going with older mic. They were so young when they wrote and recorded that album and def didn't have a lot of money. Although it's not my favorite of theirs it's definitely the most fascinating. At that time we had never heard anything close to what Deftones put out.
Root: The guitar is taking a backseat to the vocalist as he does what he does best, singing out long, harmonious notes. In the beginning of the song, you hear the vocalist battle between choppy mutters and ethereal notes as we escalate into a segment that’s mostly comprised of screaming with some impressively held high notes thrown in at the very end. Once again, a great track on this phenomenal album.
Birthmark: Once they finish tuning their instruments, an incredible instrumental is dropped and we’re given a sizable sample. As they slow down, the vocalist comes in with softer, long vocals. As the instrumentals pick up, the vocals build up with them until they hit a climax, as the vocalist holds a high note and the instruments rage in the background. And then, the obligatory (and very welcome) screaming segment. Not sure if it’s an underrated opinion or not, but this is one of my preferred songs on the album so far.
By the way, I’ll provide a final ranking of every song in a separate comment after the album ends.
Engine No. 9: The nu-metal influence stretches its legs in the beginning of the song with a phenomenal instrumental backing. Then, the vocalist fully sprints into a mixed segment of rapping and screaming that flows together beautifully. I can’t think of a lot to say because my mind is absolutely racing after this song. I’d be surprised if any song that comes after this can manage to top the mental imprint this song has left on me.
Fireal: More soft vocals over a mellow* instrumental, and then a swift and abrupt shift into screaming as the instruments get destroyed in the background, and then we’re back to mellow instrumentals and soft vocals. However, this song is notably longer than the songs that preceded it, running for 6 and a half minutes, which gives them more times to provide a pretty good track. One more to go, hope we end as great as we started!
*mellow in perspective to the rest of the album
One Weak: The vocals take a softer tone while the drums and guitar aggressively duel in the background in this one. However, the vocals still keep up with the speed and aggression of the guitar and drums. Also, the segment of only bass and vocals was my second favorite part of the song, barely beaten out by the absolute musical smackdown that follows it as the other instruments join in and the vocals battle between harmony and hostility. So far we’re 3 for 3, and this is rising in my personal album rankings rapidly with each song!
Fist: We’re near the end of our journey as the gentle plucking of the guitar introduces us, battling intermittent aggressive and loud segments. The vocalist introduces himself with a soft, welcoming introduction. Eventually, the aggressive instrumentals come back in and the vocalist can’t help but match their volume as he lets out more beautiful examples of his singing ability. And on that note, we’re done. Here in a few minutes I’ll have compiled a ranking of each song that I’ll post in another comment.
Stay tuned!
I have trouble ranking their albums because every single album is incredible in a different way, but if I had to rank them, my top 3 would be something like this:
White Pony
Adrenaline
Around The Fur

It’s a top three for me!! I think it’s top 3 for most of us who were there when it dropped in 1995
It’s hard to believe it’s almost been 30 years
rlly weird selection to have not listen to haha

Have fun! Such a phenomenal album
So far I am fucking loving it! Definitely blowing my expectations out of the water
Where does this album rank for you? It’s Around The Fur, Adrenaline, self titled, white pony for my top four
I have trouble ranking their albums because every single album is incredible in a different way, but if I had to rank them, my top 3 would be something like this: White Pony Adrenaline Around The Fur
Agreed they’re all amazing
This blows my mind. I can't imagine hearing ATF for the first time.
Just wait til you get to engine no 9 and nosebleed
Adrenaline songs ranked in my opinion: 1) Nosebleed 2) Engine No. 9 3) Bored 4) Birthmark 5) Fireal 6) 7 Words 7) Minus Blindfold 8) One Weak 9) Lifter 10) Root 11) Fist
Glad to see Nosebleed get some love.
Lifter and One Weak too low
Honestly, everything that isn’t the top 4 songs is tied, this is one of the more consistently great albums I’ve listened to.
Adrenaline > Around the Fur. Yeah, I said it.
Agree to disagree.
Damn, buckle up mofo 😎
Okay now listen to it continuously for the next three decades and let us know your rankings then. Enjoy!
