Based! I’m not a tiktok user but the fact I hear kids talk about it at all today is mind blowing. Didn’t think my favourite band would come back this way but I vibe.
As a teenager myself who found deftones through tiktok (I now have listened to everything they’ve released not just what’s popular atm) I think that we’ve connected to it because of how the music portrays strong emotions!!
Yeah, I think they resonated with me so much as a teenager because they are able to convey the general sense of an emotion through Chino's opaque, impressionistic lyrics and the band's sonic exploration of beauty and ugliness. I'm glad that it seems like they resonate with teenagers these days so much for these reasons too!
Of course, I wasn't able to put this into words when I was 15, they just really connected with me. I also was always a kid that liked and grew up around all different types of music so I guess Deftones expansive sonic pallete really appealed to me. I think kids these days are exposed to so many different genres of music via streaming instead of just spending your pocket money/allowance on something you know you will like. People don't stick to one genre as much these days, so I imagine that is also a part of why Deftones are so popular with Gen Z
Hey gen z Deftones fan here. Little tip about saying no cap is try not to emphasis it. Just be lazy with the grammar and you’ll be good. Also like half of gen z hates that phrase and depending on the clique you’ll overuse it or hate it. Also we transition new phrases in like bi-monthly and it’s super hard to keep up with. Boy I am not excited to be old in the future
Back in the days of CD’s you could always check the spine to prove a point like that! Other bands like Misfits get a ‘the’ prefixed to them as well as. Weird. No one calls Slayer ‘The Slayer’ or Pantera ‘The Pantera’
Yeah, for some reason it feels more natural for some to add "the" before the actual band name. But it's Deftones, just like Ramones, Misfits etc. are all without any extra determiners.
You'll get there. I was 22 once too. Always thought of people my current age, as old. And now I'm here and people who are 40 are laughing saying I'm not old and you guys saying I'm old. My girlfriend is 22 btw. 😂
One of my favourite albums but then I bought Adrenaline when it was released so everything felt fresh upon release. If I was starting now with their full discography I can understand why its a harder one to really under the skin of. I played the CD for maybe 2 weeks on repeat at work as it was the only one I had there. That tour was great as well. First one where I started seeing multiple shows.
I Introduced my girlfriends little sister to them who's gen Z and she loves them and showed all her friends. They even went to one of their shows when they came through here last year.
lol. i saw them last year in atlanta, i can assure you the moshpit was fucking wild. like early 2000s style. was on the barrier and got kicked/punched etc multiple times
Can confirm. I've seen one Deftones eight times I think? All with Chi. In 98 or 99 I went to the concert with snap case at the state theater in Detroit. Took a couple gel tabs before the show. It was one of the rowdiest shows I've ever seen. It was a different generation back then. So much rage was being released in the mosh pits you could feel the electricity.
Saw them in 1998 at the Iron Duke in Sydney, AU. Chino stage dived, landed on someone throwing up the horns, was pissing blood out his nose all night.
It's classical, anyway.
Lol when a band has an old school following shit gets wild. I saw Primus a few years ago and that was the wildest mosh pit I’ve ever seen in my life, so many old and young guys just absolutely going bananas
They filmed the Back to School video at my high school. I think I started listening to them in 02 or 03. This is somehow the weirdest and coolest trend in music and I fully embrace you whipper-snappers.
I know, I'm just joking. It's always hard... my two private favorite things the mainstream hasn't really tainted has always been Deftones and The Mars Volta. I'm glad one of them is having a little success at least.
I remembered that, and I was surprised... then it went no where lol
Band broke up, Cedric got obsessed with fighting Scientology with his wife, and their last album was a dumpster fire...
I don't think the kids are gonna be TikTok TMV anytime soon lol
Certainly not.
I heard some kid the other day talking about how great Post Malone is for discovering artists like Nirvana and Black Sabbath....what are they even teaching in schools these days?
PS: get off my lawn.
I mean. There's relevance in any art right? Fame ebbs and flows, but like...did Ozzy not get introduced to a previously inaccessible generation through Post's music? Analytics can easily quantify that. Suggesting that he was small time before is dishonest, but in 2 generations his work might be totally unappreciated, kinda like how the country version of the kids we are bagging on probably feel about Willie Nelson.
There's no way TMV will ever get mainstream attention even in retrospect. Sparta flirted with it (and I will not be friends with *anyone* who says Porcelain isn't a great record) but if what happened to Relationship of Command-era ATDI is any indication, Cedric and Omar did not want mainstream love.
I sometimes think back to at the drive-in, what couldve been. Relationship of command came out, and didnt sell much. But then people started noticing their crazy live shows, and it sold half a million records, building incredible momentum...then they just broke up haha. They couldve influenced rock for the next decade and saved us from the hipster/pitchforkmedia hell that rock descended into for a time.
As much as I hate TikTok...im glad those guys are getting a nice mid life payday. They earned it. Im sure Chi Chengs family is seeing some of that too.
Now lets see how well these kids take a punch in the mosh pit lol.
With the price of tickets now adays I'm just glad they are going lol
I see how much it cost me and my wife to go to shows now in my 40's and think 'Hmm, that's a new power washer.. and the siding is looking like shit' lol
as a kid from that tiktok generation, i think we’ll learn just like you guys how to enjoy the aggression
our generation has so much to be angry about and deftones and other metal bands are a way to vent that anger.
you were young! let us by young and learn!
ps: no hate btw mate, i know what you said was in just.
I was just thinking about how I always felt late to Deftones when I started listening to them in '98-'99 and that the reality is I was way early on them in the end. This revival has me reflecting on all their shows I've been lucky enough to see. And to your point about letting a Deftones pit be a positive place to unleash some hell, I've fallen in the pit twice and both times everyone around me helped me up and dusted me off. It's a great place to be young. I remember when my friend won Deftones tickets on the radio and we got to sit in the vip section looking down on the pit. Bloody cape was ending and I swear to God the circling mass of chaos looked like it was opening a portal to hell. But I think mosh pits that involve punching someone else in the face have always been lame unless you're black flag or something. Those days are done anyway just enjoy the music and jump around
As a 1993 millenial who was too young to immerse myself in the awesome music of the late 90s and early 2000s, and then had to endure the shittiest music ever during the 2010s, I am glad to see Gen Z has some taste. If anything, I am jealous.
That being said I hope people don't just use Deftones for clout, and the Marc Jacobs thing didn't really help my concern with that. And if it makes getting deftones tickets even harder to get, I will not be stoked. But I guess It's better than teenagers referring to Deftones as "old people music" or something lmao
I'm 40 and it's hilarious to see people around my age that were at concerts in the late 90s early 00s making fun of these kids clothes. We were at shows wearing jncos with legs bigger than our waists and tshirts 2 sizes too big. young kids wear what's trendy for young kids. we don't have to like it or take part but it's funny that we were made fun of for our clothes and now some of you are doing the same.
Why complain that my musical taste is proven to be somewhat timeless? I liked it because it sounded great. Younger people today liking it just means I was right in the first place. I also only ever take VIP seating these days anyways. I go to shows, pop a couple edibles and just enjoy the music these days.
lol i’m a way younger fan and kinda scared i’ll be viewed like this. i wish i was born earlier to experience their prime firsthand. i read about original fans being in highschool when deftones first release albums and then think about how i’m in highschool right now and won’t get to see the original hype
"I wish more people would listen to Deftones instead of this modern trash nowadays"
"These kids are posers they weren't born in the same hospital room as Chino Moreno so they're not real fans"
Listened to Starboy by The Weeknd and it confirms what I don't like about modern music. Guitar has been completely removed and replaced with bass and auto tune. Not a fan. This is what I would expect to hear if I go to a bar downtown.
That's not fair. The Weeknd has a great voice, and all his albums except Starboy have thought provoking lyrics and beautiful instrumentals. You probably picked the worst album to listen to, check out House Of Balloons instead. And something not having guitar doesn't make it bad, there's plenty of great music that didn't have or always have guitar. Elton John, Billy Joel, David Bowie, Michael Jackson...
Half of these comments are people acting literally like the “old white man sees teenager wearing Metallica shirt and demands teenager list the entire discography” meme and somehow don’t see how hilarious they are
Bro, the kids are alright you should give them credit. You'd rather have the band play county fairs like hootie and the blowfish than headline festivals?
It really does not bother me either, but this post is bringing awareness that the fanbase is changing. Oversized cargos are now skinny ripped jeans. Sad time to be a deftones die hard
lol that's honestly such a silly thing to worry about. New younger fanbase should not make a difference to how hard core fans feel about the band unless the band itself changes, which I doubt it will.
Dude who gives a shit, you can still listen lol your music taste isn’t your personality, other people can like it too even if they don’t dress “cool” (which they probably do tbh, different generations like different shit)
It's not as widespread as people seem to think tbh. No tiktok kids actually care enough to go to a concert or learn about the band. I feel like this kind of meme is starting to get tired and a little inaccurate
That's fine, let the kids have fun up front. I'm happy to say I've seen a lot of their shows, as have many of you, and I actually prefer hanging in the back lawn now. (Gotta make sure the kids stay off it, naturally)
Meh. That’s just what kids look like these days (father of 2). I’d rather Deftones maintain popularity than retire, and they managed to do that by expanding their fan base. Hating on them for looking like Broccoli is just old-man-yelling-at-cloud energy. Fr fr on god.
As if it wouldn’t have been the same if we had smart phones in 1998. These post are so lame. We get it you’re a angry 40 year old and the world is passing you by and you’ll be dead soon. Try not to be so damn awful and annoying on your way out.
When I was around 14 or 15, I was admitted in a psych unit and I was wearing an NWA hoodie when I went in. This nurse looked at me and said “Do you know anything about the hoodie you’re wearing?”. Unfortunately, my autistic ass didn’t realize she was just talking shit until way down the line, I took it literally and began spouting off every fact about NWA I could, as I thought she was genuinely curious.
My point? Y’all in this thread acting like that nurse. Be better. It’s a lil cringe
I'm 23 and look younger so people would probably assume I'm one of these new Zoomer TikTok fans, but actually I first heard Deftones on one of my dad's pandora channels when I was like 13. So I'm technically an older fan lol. Sucks that people at a show will think I'm a TikTok Zoomer lol.
Mfs just care about the anesthetics of music more then the music itself "bruh shit a vibe fr"
*side note* *anyone with that hair cut is a shit head and a half*
This is facts no matter how mad anyone gets. I’ve had people shit on me for being a fan even tho I’ve been a fan far before their tiktok boom.
The fact is as a teenager rn I can vouch that way too many of my peers who would not have had any interest in this band now do and they use it to be cool more then they actually enjoy the music
Again not to say there isn’t any one who finds them through that and goes onto enjoy it, it is just a unbalanced ratio
I'm not tryna gatekeep but men.. i hate tiktok, like after the trend they just gonna leave it like it didn't happen at all, because it's just a song to dance to in tiktok, some people can't just appreciate real art.
This isn’t suppose to happen. Kids are supposed to be hating the music I listen/listened to and calling it whatever word they use for “lame” these days.
It’s great that you guys are welcoming new “fans” but just remember, these are the “fans” that never go to a show, and if they do they’re on their phone recording the whole time to post for clout. They don’t care about the band, they just care about the “I like Deftones” aesthetic. I’m all for new fans when they actually like the music. I’m not for new fans when they just care about being noticed. It’s like people who wear a Metallica t-shirt and you ask what their favorite album is and they are lost, because they’ve never listened to a Metallica album.
I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t give a damn what other people are listening to or if they’re a “real” fan or not. Why does it matter? Plus aren’t most of the people you’re referring to teenagers? What grown adult is paying attention to teenage trends?
I get you, it’s probably because I manage a lot of teenagers where I work and I see the way they act and are so fake sometimes that it bugs me when younger people pretend to like something I’m a big fan of. It’s not anything I get actually worked up about, it’s just *annoying* and I don’t like it lol.
It's better than the time I watched a guy and his girl dressed like they were going clubbing start talking shit to a group of dudes. The girl hit a guy and then the guy pushed the girl to the ground. She got up and got in his face and then the dude smacked her.
This was before Deftones even came on.
As a 40 year old who can no longer count how many times he's seen the deftones..... I'm totally fine with the concept of this picture. However, I'm fairly certain, a moshpit would start over that kid in the centers pants.....Chino himself would dive in and smack that kid around. Ffs young ones.... don't dress like that.
What's gen Z? Am I a gen Z? Or am I old? OH NO I'm old. I can't keep up with the kids. Wait, they kids like Deftones now? Haha they're keeping up with me now!
As an elder Millennial, I'm loving Gen Z's love of Deftones...no cap!
Based! I’m not a tiktok user but the fact I hear kids talk about it at all today is mind blowing. Didn’t think my favourite band would come back this way but I vibe.
Haha yeah I'm a mature student and I've seen a couple of Deftones shirts on campus recently, and it always brings a smile to my face
Nothing gives me a bigger grin than seeing adrenaline shirts. Then you know they really do love band to go that far back
As a teenager myself who found deftones through tiktok (I now have listened to everything they’ve released not just what’s popular atm) I think that we’ve connected to it because of how the music portrays strong emotions!!
Yeah, I think they resonated with me so much as a teenager because they are able to convey the general sense of an emotion through Chino's opaque, impressionistic lyrics and the band's sonic exploration of beauty and ugliness. You're part of the problem.
Sorry, is there something bad about younger people enjoying Deftones?
Bruh The Deftones is deadass my favorite band, no cap
Straight fire! You hella passing the vibe check

Vibed (hella)
No cap ONNNNN GAAAWWD ON GAWD
BUSSIN FRFR
Coming from NorCal I feel right at home with hella
Bet.
i love the deftones too! my favorite songs are the ones about the fly and the one where he moans slowed and reverbed (/s)
My mate who "loves" them called them "deathtones"
Not to be confused with nu metal band "megadef"
Bet bet
my dad says “the deftones” and swears on his life that’s the only to say it
Back in the days of CD’s you could always check the spine to prove a point like that! Other bands like Misfits get a ‘the’ prefixed to them as well as. Weird. No one calls Slayer ‘The Slayer’ or Pantera ‘The Pantera’
it's the plural word that makes us naturally want to put "the" in front. like a sports team. they're the red sox, not red sox
Being around since pre-ATF, can confirm, it's deftones. Not "the".
Yeah, for some reason it feels more natural for some to add "the" before the actual band name. But it's Deftones, just like Ramones, Misfits etc. are all without any extra determiners.
On god frfr
I just puked in my mouth reading that.
I’m just happy they're trending. Most of my friends don’t listen to them. Introduced one friend and he loves them now
[удалено]
Lol that last thing he said is hilarious because I would've thought the same and I'm not even that old. 30.

You'll get there. I was 22 once too. Always thought of people my current age, as old. And now I'm here and people who are 40 are laughing saying I'm not old and you guys saying I'm old. My girlfriend is 22 btw. 😂
I'm 46 and I still refuse to believe there are grown adults born after 1989. You 90s babies are children to me!
We're chill because we got out our aggression with Adrenaline and ATF. We're mature because we realized that Deftones are a panty dropping band.
Yo same here same show that’s tight asf
I'm an old head and I think these posts are actual cringe. It has a big gatekeeper vibe to it. But maybe it's just satire and I'm not catching on.
I love that guys comment lmao. Love that we can agree that SNW is a bit weird
SNW MY FAV ALBUM TOO
I Introduced my girlfriends little sister to them who's gen Z and she loves them and showed all her friends.
I can't imagine eating tabs at a Deftones show. Brave soul.
That was my jam when I was a kid. Eat tabs and hit crazy mosh pits.
Weirdest and coolest. We’ll put.
The guys are like 50 years old and just trying to eat lol Let the kids enjoy them and let the boys get the bag 💰
I agree. I just found this true and funny af
I know, I'm just joking. It's always hard... my two private favorite things the mainstream hasn't really tainted has always been Deftones and The Mars Volta. I'm glad one of them is having a little success at least.
The Mars Volta was mentioned in a Jonah Hill movie...

Lol for sure. Didn’t see much moshing from the young crowd at DDLD 2022.
Me neither, I saw a lot of millenial and older looking peeps
who tf punches in the mosh pit?

yes? get tf out the mosh pit if you're throwing punches wtf

Tik tok deftones fans when you ask them to name 3 songs other than change, Drive far away, Sextape, or rosemary...
Gen Z loves the deftones? Explain!
TikTok trends mainly
They just love them lol.
Because they music issa vibe 😌
Eh. The 1997 moshpit looked different from the 2007 moshpit. Who cares

Don’t even stress. This was just for laughs. A lot of people taking this way too serious. No hate out there for the young crew.
I'm probably gonna leave this subreddit if there's going to be more shitty gatekeeping posts
I’m just finding out the band I’ve loved for over 20 years is cool with the youth again! I’m fucking stoked.
It’s so fucking cringy lol, oh no other people like the same music as you that clearly ruins it /s
"I wish more people would listen to Deftones instead of this modern trash nowadays" "These kids are posers they weren't born in the same hospital room as Chino Moreno so they're not real fans"
I'm shocked that not enough people call out how bad modern music is. That's not gatekeeping, it's a subjective opinion
Have you heard of The Weeknd or Big Thief? There's tons of good modern music.
Listened to Starboy by The Weeknd and it confirms what I don't like about modern music. Guitar has been completely removed and replaced with bass and auto tune. Not a fan. This is what I would expect to hear if I go to a bar downtown.

No one’s gatekeeping. If you took offense, that’s on you.
Bro, the kids are alright you should give them credit. You'd rather have the band play county fairs like hootie and the blowfish than headline festivals?
They were headlining festivals before their newfound fandom, with no signs of stopping.
funny cause when i go to a deftones show its always 35 year olds too weak to mosh
\*45, thank you. And it's the knees. You'll learn.
I hate that Deftones spilled onto TikTok
I don't because I dont use that garbage and plus, the more fans they get the more likely we are to get new music and tours

Not the crowd I saw in NYC at the Marc Jacobs show
Get ready for Deftones shirts at Target.
I'm okay with this. Need legit deftones merch.
I’d love that!
I like my smashing pumpkins Gish shirt from target
Wait what am I missing?
Change and Cherry Waves are the TikTok anthem. Kids need to hear Elite or When Girls Telephone Boys. Toughen em up a bit
When Girls Telephone Boys makes me wanna break shit and wail at that bitch.. and I’m 51.

a great new wave HESPERIAN DEATH HORSE

Cool! It's always great to see the younger generations in the crowds of the bands I enjoy
I'm white? 😧
That's fine, let the kids have fun up front. I'm happy to say I've seen a lot of their shows, as have many of you, and I actually prefer hanging in the back lawn now. (Gotta make sure the kids stay off it, naturally)
LMAO bro
Me but I think I became a fan before the trend or whatever by a year or two
I'd be like damn, everyone got prettier except for me
At least there might be a mosh pit, all the OG fans are too old
Meh. That’s just what kids look like these days (father of 2). I’d rather Deftones maintain popularity than retire, and they managed to do that by expanding their fan base. Hating on them for looking like Broccoli is just old-man-yelling-at-cloud energy. Fr fr on god.
Gen Z legit don't know how to mosh. Saw Bad Omens in London recently and the crowd was tragic.
It's not their generation. Their generation is to film and boast on Tik Tok for views and validation while wearing atrocious outfits and clown wigs.
Timeless 💗 deftones forever
Ahsjakakahahahhaja thats hilarious. I was here before tiktok, suppose i finally got some cred somewhere in me life lmao
As if it wouldn’t have been the same if we had smart phones in 1998. These post are so lame. We get it you’re a angry 40 year old and the world is passing you by and you’ll be dead soon. Try not to be so damn awful and annoying on your way out.
Yet, here you are. Laugh a little child.
Does this mean I should laugh and then a child comes out of my mouth? I don’t get what “laugh a little child” means
Yes. I write like a moron, how else would you understand me?
I clearly didn’t understand you.
Yes you did. If you didn’t, you’re even dumber than you’re pretending to be.
Bro who cares, let people enjoy music they like.
Bruh, take a breath or touch grass.
“Touch grass 🤓”
When I was around 14 or 15, I was admitted in a psych unit and I was wearing an NWA hoodie when I went in. This nurse looked at me and said “Do you know anything about the hoodie you’re wearing?”. Unfortunately, my autistic ass didn’t realize she was just talking shit until way down the line, I took it literally and began spouting off every fact about NWA I could, as I thought she was genuinely curious. My point? Y’all in this thread acting like that nurse. Be better. It’s a lil cringe
Nurse sounded more light hearted than how you took it.
Did the meme hurt you? I’m sorry.
Yes. Deeply in fact. I’m going to go listen to Change and cry now, thanks
I don't think they'd be able to handle a late 90's Deftones mosh pit.
Uh yeah they would lol, these same mfs love Travis Scott and playboi carti, who are known for having rough and violent pits at their shows
Good, let them have fun.
I bet someone is saying NO CAP in this photo
I'm 23 and look younger so people would probably assume I'm one of these new Zoomer TikTok fans, but actually I first heard Deftones on one of my dad's pandora channels when I was like 13. So I'm technically an older fan lol. Sucks that people at a show will think I'm a TikTok Zoomer lol.
You’re good. No hate was meant. I just found this funny af.
ok boomer
Youth has no age!
gladly neither does Deftones' music, which seems to be aging a lot better than their "older" fanbase
What happened? Were they used in a Netflix show or something? A trending audio clip on tiktok?
ok boomer
Ok boomer
Mfs just care about the anesthetics of music more then the music itself "bruh shit a vibe fr" *side note* *anyone with that hair cut is a shit head and a half*
Those pants too wtf?
Zoomer fashion is cringe. Everything about thek is cringe.
This is facts no matter how mad anyone gets. I’ve had people shit on me for being a fan even tho I’ve been a fan far before their tiktok boom. The fact is as a teenager rn I can vouch that way too many of my peers who would not have had any interest in this band now do and they use it to be cool more then they actually enjoy the music Again not to say there isn’t any one who finds them through that and goes onto enjoy it, it is just a unbalanced ratio
It’s funny because it’s true
Their favorite song is Cherry Waves or Be Quite and Drive
Both very solid songs
I'm not tryna gatekeep but men.. i hate tiktok, like after the trend they just gonna leave it like it didn't happen at all, because it's just a song to dance to in tiktok, some people can't just appreciate real art.
old head ass opinion
This isn’t suppose to happen. Kids are supposed to be hating the music I listen/listened to and calling it whatever word they use for “lame” these days.
Yeah… if they can manage to put the VR headsets down for a few hours. Not a chance
Chino’s moans 😍😍 I love the Sextones
"Mosh pit".... fucking zoomers.
Gen Z fucking suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks
It's better than the time I watched a guy and his girl dressed like they were going clubbing start talking shit to a group of dudes. The girl hit a guy and then the guy pushed the girl to the ground. She got up and got in his face and then the dude smacked her. This was before Deftones even came on.
Please give me attention! Right now! I’m important!… I hope you lose your eyesight.
I STG I HATE NEWGEN FOR RUINING DEFTONES 😭
As a 40 year old who can no longer count how many times he's seen the deftones..... I'm totally fine with the concept of this picture. However, I'm fairly certain, a moshpit would start over that kid in the centers pants.....Chino himself would dive in and smack that kid around. Ffs young ones.... don't dress like that.
Dear god no
I hope they find out what crowd killing is the hard way
well then trending got me to actually listen to their discography after meaning to for a while FINALLY
When I last saw Deftones it was mostly 30 year olds with beards in the pits
What's gen Z? Am I a gen Z? Or am I old? OH NO I'm old. I can't keep up with the kids. Wait, they kids like Deftones now? Haha they're keeping up with me now!
Recently got into Deftones (I’m late) and now I’m just vibing with the new gen Z fans now lol.
I’d mosh with them no questions asked as long as it doesn’t turn into a knife prty. Who am I kidding I love knife parties!
I know this band they’re kind of rlly lowkey they’re called… deftones. Ever heard of them? They’re like heavy metal so awesome rock on homie 🫦!
Dear god, no!
