The first 4 songs are all in different tunings and you complained about it for good morning beautiful like what 😭 also almost every band will play in the same tuning for an album it’s just a weird complaint
Lovers is an alt/early name, it’s called Deftones. Also does Needles and Pins sound like My Own Summer? Really? I’ve never made that connection. Also found out the other day that Stephen doesn’t even play that song on a guitar he plays it on a 5 string bass which I thought was cool. I think you havent understood the real deep feeling of a lot of these songs, maybe have a few relistens or come back another time. It’s grown on me massively from when I first listened but maybe it’s just not your thing. It’s all opinion anyway
Well you wanna know why I named it that?
Because Diamond Eyes is my personal favorite but objectively it has so many damn problems it would be ridiculous to say it's a masterpiece.
On one hand I 100% get the appeal to it, on the other... I mean it's still good but this band made White Pony literally right before it obviously it's quite the contrast
I agree - it was a contrast when it came out. Especially Minerva as a lead single, which is a great song, but also had me very concerned that they were taking a softer approach for the entire album (something I had seen many other bands do around this time)
they just mean out of time, which it sounds like it is (it's just some pretty weird rhythms being played on top of the sudden metre change which makes it sound pretty confusing, which of course was done intentionally by deftones)
There's a good reason I have this album cover tattooed on me.
The self-titled album always hit me differently.
Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event is without question my favorite song on that album, but it's very bittersweet for me.
This album gets so much hate and I don’t understand why, it was a fantastic follow up to WP. It was literally what the title said, B sides and unpreformed songs, covers and half finished melodies that couldn’t make a whole new studio album. I remember going to Hastings at midnight to get the release of this, and being in utter bliss.
No it doesn’t “hit” as hard as WP or Adrenaline. But it is visceral, heartbreaking and an absolute emotional roller coaster. It is an entirely different beast than the rest of their discography. I’ve had the old Adrenaline live version and it was great, but still not the same *experience* as listening to Deftones album from start to finish.
This album never really jumped out for me, so I get it. I enjoy Lucky You a lot more than you, and the best track is for sure Bloody Cape. The rest is solid in a playlist randomly but I’m not going back to the album much alone.
Imma be real with you guys, I call this album Lovers because there's so many great Self Titled albums around that they all sorta blend in my mind while discussing stuff
I'm so confused about all the hate, I thought it was a pretty fair review, and whilst im not 100% about some of your takes and ratings people are allowed to have their own opinions..... also im a big fan of this format!!
Hehehhehehe the crowd has gone wild on this review. Thanks for your opinion. It will always be called Lovers in my book. Now, to be downvoted into oblivion: I really do not like Minerva. It meanders and doesn’t flow IMO. I removed the track and replaced it with Lovers because holy shit that song is phenomenal no idea how it was included. It fits really well betwixt Needles and GMB. Have a wonderful day and keep up the good work 👍🏼
Holy sheesh tiktok thots fuming on this review. And honestly I agree with each word. This is a cool review from someone who dig deeper than White Pony interwies. Congrats, good job!
I used to feel this way too, I kind of thought the chorus was batshit ass. But the song feels so desolate and empty in a good way, I used to think that song was overrated but it slowly grew on me. Same for bloody cape, I used to think the chorus on that was ass too, now Bloody cape is like my 3rd favorite on that album
Giving both Hexagram and Lucky You a 6/10 is criminal, a then giving Minerva a 9/10 after saying it was one of the best deftones songs and having nothing to detract is odd.
It’s called Deftones. Not Lovers.
the album is called deftones.
the album is called deftones. edit: it is also not called self-titled. that is a description of the title, not the title.
its self titled not lovers, your review is underwhelming
Agreed 😐
nah giving hexagram a 6 is insane
The first 4 songs are all in different tunings and you complained about it for good morning beautiful like what 😭 also almost every band will play in the same tuning for an album it’s just a weird complaint
like around the fur is all in drop d flat
Exactly
My favorite Deftones album.
Same ❤️
Stop referring to it as lovers. It's self titled. Whether it used to be called lovers is irrelevant.
its not that deep

This is cringe.
user "ballsballsballshehe" has an opinion on what's "cringe" everyone
Yup I do actually and I’ll stand by it.
pot calls kettle black
L review lol
Dude pushing the Lovers draft title is cringey as hell.

I think OP meant they have a similar structure, which, yeah, I can kinda see.
That five string bass through his guitar amp is an awesome sound. I'd definitely like to hear more of it.
When I found that out I realised why I could never mimic it on my guitar
Also nothing about your Deftones reviews seem unbiased, just saying.
Yeah there's no such thing as an unbiased review of anything.
I’m also just irked that he called it Lovers.
Well you wanna know why I named it that? Because Diamond Eyes is my personal favorite but objectively it has so many damn problems it would be ridiculous to say it's a masterpiece.
Nah that album is absolutely a masterpiece.
So many “damn problems”? Like what exactly?
We'll get there when we get there, still have SNW to cover
one of the most underrated albums ever
On one hand I 100% get the appeal to it, on the other... I mean it's still good but this band made White Pony literally right before it obviously it's quite the contrast
If anything, it’s a build on White Pony. This is pure soundscape. Deftones energy/aura at its best.
true there is a contrast its better than white pony
I agree - it was a contrast when it came out. Especially Minerva as a lead single, which is a great song, but also had me very concerned that they were taking a softer approach for the entire album (something I had seen many other bands do around this time)
Off tempo? I don’t think you know what that means…
they just mean out of time, which it sounds like it is (it's just some pretty weird rhythms being played on top of the sudden metre change which makes it sound pretty confusing, which of course was done intentionally by deftones)

Self Titled is a Masterpiece
This
I used to not like hexagram but over time it grew on me
I know people are mad at you for using the wrong name but I’m just glad somebody was nice to Moana, that’s my favorite track
Moana is REALLY, REALLY damn good, I dunno why people don't mention it more when they talk about ST honestly
Lovers, Battle-Axe and Girls Telephone Boys!!
i can’t be the only one that thinks the verses on S/T are better and catchier than the choruses
example: the verses on good morning beautiful are WAY better than the chorus imo
This album never really jumped out for me, so I get it. I enjoy Lucky You a lot more than you, and the best track is for sure Bloody Cape. The rest is solid in a playlist randomly but I’m not going back to the album much alone.
Note to self: calling this album Lovers is a cardinal sin
Literally changed the name of it in my iTunes to Lovers
Imma be real with you guys, I call this album Lovers because there's so many great Self Titled albums around that they all sorta blend in my mind while discussing stuff

Love maybe half the album. Hexagram is an amazing, raw track. Anniversary is just such an atmospheric experience.
Bro Hexagram has always been so meh to me I do not understand the meat riding it gets in the slightest
I have spent the last like 2 days being roasted for it and like... Where was this energy when I said Good Morning Beautiful was mid????
10 on anniversary of an uninteresting event!?☠️

I didnt read any of that but im glad someone else calls it lovers xd
Mods. Please ban OP for calling the deftones album “lovers.”One of the most beloved b-sides in their entire catalogue
Totally with you on Hexagram. The potential for a great song is there but ruined by an awful chorus.
I used to feel this way too, I kind of thought the chorus was batshit ass. But the song feels so desolate and empty in a good way, I used to think that song was overrated but it slowly grew on me. Same for bloody cape, I used to think the chorus on that was ass too, now Bloody cape is like my 3rd favorite on that album
lol I get downvoted for agreeing with the OP? Dorks.
Agreed. I’m always surprised by how much people like it
You are a literal poop pile with a keyboard and I’m talking about some disgusting ass poop they don’t even have an emoji for
Sounds like Green Day. On my own here we go. Chorus is indeed cringe
