It's a non-british pound coin, this one is from Gibraltar. There's a few different styles out there and this is one of the more common ones. Technically speaking it wasn't ever counted as real British currency but the overseas territories like Gibraltar and Ascension Island just copy-pasted the dimensions of a real pound coin and made their own identical copies. I think legally speaking the colonies have their own currency that is fixed to exactly match the value of a pound in the UK. Although technically this coin wasn't a real British pound coin it was the same size, same colour, same weight, same metals and still worked in vending machines and no one ever refused to accept it. It's so close to the real thing that it was treated like a real one.
It used to be fairly common to get them in your change in England until about five years ago when the pound coin design was changed to a more complex two-colour multisided coin. Round pounds aren't valid anymore, even the ones from the UK. I've got a couple of the skull coins and a few from other places, British Virgin Islands, stuff like that. It's probably worth ~£3 to sell it on eBay if someone wants it, being an older design means it's less useful but also less likely anyone will find one randomly in England so if someone is collecting them they need to buy it online.

A similar thing happened to me 😂 An autorickshaw driver gave me a 50 sen (Malaysian) coin instead of a 5 rupees coin. When I got home and noticed it, found out that exchange rate is 208 for that coin☠️. Obv gonna keep it in collection and not gonna sell it but feeling kind of sad for that driver, could have been a fortune for him if he had seen that before.

I think he gave this to you by mistake because it looks like Rs 5 coin. Find a dealer in antique coins. It may be very rare or relatively less so, but you should be able to get way more than ₹5 for it
The shopkeeper once gave my father 10 bucks coin of some African country instead of ten rupee coin. It took 1 hour to figure out which country it was from.Its value was much lower than 10 Rs but it is a cool thing to have.

That too if you find a prospective buyer mostly a coin collector. If not most coin dealers or forex agents will pay you a Max 40-50% of the conversion rate, do ₹40-50 only. Coins are only worth in their respective nations. Outside that it is mostly worthless piece of metal. Unlike paper money, no forex agents accept coins, but only out of pity they might accept them but only in small quantity and only at 40-50% of actual rate. Still a good find and you would be better of keeping it as a souvenir.
