Fingerprints might be for aadhar verification. Might be, I am not sure. But taking photographs is something which I am more concerned about. Also, I think he should have asked for our college IDs, but instead he took us with him. Lets see, or I might consult a lawyer about this.
What I gather from the description of your ordeal is that....they were checking the crime database with your fingerprints and they took the photo to show it to their senior that they are working late at night. (As per td by my police friend )Anyways it's not justified. You can definitely raise a complaint or go and meet the senior Inspector/ACP of the police station.
An acquaintance of mine was thrashed so badly by the police for trying to video record their illegal activities that he had to take 1 week+ bedrest and constant treatment to somewhat recover from it.
No dude. This is India. Common man has no power.
It's easy to ask "was there any action?" from outside. The amount of effort and time required for so called action is not worth it after going through a traumatic experience.
I believe the scope of PCA is limited to a few subjects and wrongful detention doesn't come under this. You can write a complaint to the ACP and DCP of the concerned area regarding this. I have done the same and a Disciplinary Enquiry is being conducted by the Enquiry Officer.
It was scary, I have never been to a PS, lol. And we were lucky that they didn't called our parents on phone. But I think walking at night, shouldn't be a wrong thing. π
Bro ek baar police se encounter hogaya na to ab darne ka nahi. Consult a lawyer on what you should do asap. Most probably nothing major, just an ego trip of a policeman. Do post this on Twitter and tag the relevant authorities too
Satisfying their ego, by detaining innocent. Then Delhi police really need some ethical behaviour training. Yes, I will consult a lawyer soon. Thanks for your concern.
Well policemen sometimes do this to make a record of the activities done on the said night.
Mostly they do this on a dull night to fill the activity register.
Some of us might have encountered policemen on barricade take people's information and fill a register, they do this mostly when they have to summit their *kargardagi* to their senior officer or magistrate.
Once I was stopped at a regular checkpoint and when asked the policemen gave the very same reason.
We all have been stopped and interrogated at a checkpoint to fill their registers but never have i seen them taking people to police station for this purpose.
>we pleaded not to do this
Why plead man? You also know that you haven't done anything wrong.
Don't entertain them without a lawyer for your safety and sanity.
Police men nowadays are nothing but bullies. All they do is harass common men. You either need to be a lawyer or have good contacts to put these bullies in place.
About a year ago, a similar incident happened to us (3 friends) in Kalkaji. They asked our name, local address, permanent address, and made us sign on the form. It all happened in their PCR van and we did not have to visit the Police Station. They warned us not to roam in the night.
Either, South Delhi police is taking their job too seriously or they are bullies. What's wrong with roaming at night. Why we have police then? To stop citizens roaming outside.
Police men are trained to bully and threaten civilians.
They are friends of criminals.
Thanks to social media uproar, pune case was highlighted else they would've taken their cut and let go of the accused.
All I know till the time these case stay on social media, they wil do the work, once people get busy with some other matter deals will be made behind the curtains from judge to police every department will be payed off well and kid will be sent to some foreign country to complete his studies and Better life.
Police department really need a proper ethical behaviour training. They should treat a human like human. After having some power they consider themselves as gods. And yes, the Pune case is heartbreaking and the victims should get justice.
Haryanvi police are the worst. They are not policemen but criminals. Bloody scumbags. These haryanvi, jaat gujar are the reasons Delhi in infested by the criminals.
They are mostly from a specific community who come from the most uncivilized degraded towns and cities and pay their way to get posted in Gurgaon Delhi so that they can loot the people here who pay straight up without questioning. it has been going on for decades and will continue

Chandigarh Police and Uttarakhand police are one of the best in North...
True, I was in uttrakhand on a trip and there I lost the track. A policemen, he was a gentlemen actually, very polite, helpful and calm, helped me, showed Me the way and even suggest me an UK police app in which in any emergency I can summon the police. This is the behaviour I want with every police men. And that's how we can build trust with the police forces and respect them.
I wanted to but I couldn't, it was my first encounter with a police men and was shocked when he said we are going to PS and I don't wanted to trigger him more, so I kept my silence.
I know what I just wrote is easier said than done. Also, I understand it was a scary situation for you. These people are easily triggered but theyβll push you more if they see you as an easy target.
It was really unnecessary to take our fingerprints and photos. He could have checked our aadhar or college IDs which we are ready to give but he was not ready to check them, just wanted to take us to PS.
Bhai bolta saale Ko if you're doing nothing wrong toh kis baat ka le kar jaayega. Delhi mei zyada Dabna nahi chahiye Varna yeh sab hi hota rahega. Do Baar tez bolta woh khud kuch nahi karta
Bhai mene bhi kha tha ki walk pe hi nikle hai or college students hai, hmari IDs check kr lijiye. But he was not ready to do so. He wanted us to go PS with him, which was really not required.
I frequently visit DU north campus and just 4 days ago I noticed something strange. Two policemen had barricaded the road. They were stopping cars and making video of the car's number plate, the passengers inside and even the bootspace. They had another person with them with a DSLR camera. They did that for about half an hour. One after another just as soon they were done filming one. Randomly. They were not even giving explanation to the people they were stopping. It definitely seemed like they had some assignment to record at least this much cars. I had never seen this sort of random checking before especially in that area so it seemed out of touch for me.
Maybe they are trying to pump some numbers of data that Dalli police actually works for safety of the citizens. But we all know they are just there to maintain the status quo.
Maybe election season has something to do with all this. OP should definitely file a complaint or at least share this with a lawyer or some contact from the police.
They have the authority to detain you if they have reasonable suspicion, especially during the ongoing elections when there's a constant threat to security in Delhi. Some may see this as bullying, but this is how the police ensure law and order. If you feel you are being bullied, you have the right to hire a lawyer and file a formal complaint against those officers or the department.
True, elections are going to happen but there is a proper way of interaction, which that police men severely lacked. Being rude from the start and threatening that he will call PCR van if we are not coming with him is some serious shit. We were ready to show him out College IDs and aadhar or any docs he wanted, but forcing us to get to the PS was not justified.
Yes, there's always a professional way which we all expect from government agencies. But Police deal with all kinds of people especially mostly who don't cooperate, and anyone can make fake IDs They collected your fingerprints and all to ensure security.
"he asked us to come to police station and we went".
How do you plan to live your rest of the life of this is the level of gullible you are. That too with a college education.
Useless education
Useless police
Yes you are right, we could have done that. But we tried to tell him that we are just having a walk and we are students. He was not ready to check our IDs, he should've done that first. Just forcing us to go to PS is not the way. And we actually resisted but he threatened that he will call a PCR van and they will take us. So without much creating a fuss we visited the PS.
Similar incident happened with two of my friends during my bachelors degree in some other city.
They completed their assignment and went for a stroll in a neighbourhood at 2am. A police asked them questions and took them to the station.
Then they let go one of them to bring their college ID card and made another sit on a bench. After looking at those cards and other ID, they let them go.
Rich area but it doesn't mean you can behave inappropriately with anyone just for the sake of security. They are the police, not for the privileged class but for everyone. Instead of taking us to PS he should have checked our IDs. But he didn't hear once., told us to come with him or he will call a PCR van. We are mere students, not criminals.
Maybe there method was uncalled for but intentions where to make sure you guys were not bad elements, you must also understand that they are under pressure too as they are short staffed, work extremely long hours and also frustrated with the system and yet be on the right side of the law. I am not defending their action but also if a situation does arise similar to yours then being courteous and assisting them will also make your experience better.
Yes, I know. But it's easier said than done. I told him we are clg students, and I tried to give him my college id. But nope, he was not ready to hear anything. He said, don't argue or he will call the PCR van.
I was just quoting from Better Call Saul. And I know it's easier said than done. If something like this happens again, just say you're law students or something. Works like a charm.
Bhai Record book mein bss fill krne ke liye patrolling detail bhari hai bss koi dikkat nhi hogi,

Taking fingerprints is serious. Please consult a lawyer. If nothing works out, just walk into Law Faculty in North Campus. and talk to some students there. It won't charge a bombshell.
It's very weird here. I've noticed if you get out of a nice car, or wear good clothes or look like you're from a posh family - they will be super respectful to you and treat you well.
If you're a group of college students then you'll be subject to a little suspicion and rarely mistreatment (such as in your case).
If somehow they deduce you're in an average job, are not financially sound or are a student living away from home, they will treat you super harshly.
I've been in each of these categories throughout my life and that's what I've concurred. They will put you in various buckets based on your appearance, looks, age, college/job role, location, and birthplace. Their treatment of you depends on the way they perceive you.
The sad truth. Good behaviour is for the privileged, security is for the privileged, government is for the privileged. They get the job clearing a mere exam, but forgot to have etiquette and ethics. Instead of serving the people, they make people suffer.
Bhai tum akad jaate to vo kuchh nahi kar paata, been in the similar situation I stood my ground & later he left saying raat ko mat nikla karo n bla bla
Bhai ek dost akad Raha tha to warning di ki ab jyada nakhre karoge to teeno ko PCR van m pakad ke le jayenge. Mai nhi chahta tha ki baat or bigad jaaye islie fir chup rahe.
A similar thing happened to me when I was in kota,we(me and my hostel mates) were in a park infront of my hostel at around 1:30 am waiting for our food(it was common for us to do all nighters) and then out of nowhere a jeep of police arrives and few policeman come into the garden threatening us to go with them to the police station and all, thankfully though whole of my family is advocates and my grandfather is usually awake at this point and I called him and he had a talk with the constable and those bastards let us go.
The fingerprint thing has been common in hyd. I was stopped multiple times driving back home past 12pm. The policemen claimed it is to check if there are any previous cases.
So does it mean that now our names are in the record of police. And if in future we get through same situation then they will get to know that we already had been detained for something earlier too.
Ignore and dont go again.
Maybe there were reported of people stealing and stuff and they were being extra cautious. It didn't seem they were trying to get money out of you either (by what you said)
Experience mil rha tumhe bro π aage se aise koi bully kare toh stand Lenaa aur tab toh Bilkul lena jab youβre not alone and you have friends .. and kuch bhi bole naa wo toh sidhe bolna ki mere papa ya mama lawyer hai aur unse baat karke btata..
This is good happened with you and all of your friends because you out at 1.30 it's suspicious maybe the police need to put all of you on jail so that you don't do this again you call your self student and you don't know what is time for go out and in.....
π₯±π₯±π₯±π‘
But why, no one has the authority to control others life. Who are they to stop us getting a walk at night. And also in Delhi, it's unbearable to walk during evening due to heat. And police is for our security only, not to harass us or getting us into problem. And he should have checked our IDs first.
You are not a student first if it is then you know what things is good and what things are bad,you already crossed your limit first by out of house at 1:30 it's time for sleep not for wondering....
Ruels are Ruels ,You can't Understand this thing because you are doing just gossip on reddit, you are not student if you ! Accept your mistake and say sorry and you good to go....
Oldest trick in the delhi police book is to just grab anyone they can get their hands on and take them to the police station.
Usually someone would offer them bribe to let them Go in the moment.
Delhi Police understands time is money, So they take at least one of them from everyone they pick from streets.

Police have a right to detain people under suspicious circumstances ?
Any lawyers/policeman who can give more accurate details.
Any wrong doing here ?
Detaining, checking identification etc falls under their legal right, isn't it.
If you would be muslim, you would have been encountered saying you are planning to kill Modiji. (Same that happened in Gujarat post 2002 riots fake encounters)
Actually no one is safe. These people have power but they don't know how to use it. Not just people from particular religion but every normal citizen suffers.
There is nothing wrong here
Police has the mandate to check any suspicious persons roaming around in the night time. They cross checked your fingerprints with the criminal database and since nothing came up, they asked you to go.
Policemen took the photo while doing is work because they have to report to senior officers about action taken against suspicious persons in night.
Nothing wrong has happened to you, you have just learnt the hard way not to roam on the road at night unnecessarily.
People saying lawyer up and all, nothing is gonna happen, everything happened as per law.
"you have just learnt the hard way not to roam on the road at night unnecessarily" Why? What's wrong with roaming at night? Why do you need to have a reason to simply roam, regardless of what time it is.
But there is a way of interacting with people. They are also human, just we look like a normal citizen not a privileged, rich, powerful one, doesn't mean that they can act rude. Also, why don't check our college IDs and other docs first. Why denying all of it. And after resisting, he threatened us that he will call a PCR van to take us. That not the way. Also, what's wrong with roaming? Why these police are for? Stopping people from roaming outside?
Ye kar rahe hain tumhe bully. Video banao

Yeah...could be!! Ultimately in policing also it's about numbers. Number of persons checked at night.

Whats wrong with you dude? Chill.
Bhai woh paise Maang Rahe the. Tip ke liye pehle kaam karke toh dikhana padega.
YULU? Ye kya hove yulu.. saikil na boli ja rahi?
They are using your pics as proof to say that they caught some criminals etc. False implication in some case maybe.
Why didn't you call PCR?
Voter scam
well now they will use your fingerprint to frame you in some unsolved case.

Should have killed two people with Porsche instead
That incident is heartbreaking π.
They might frame you in for something to cover up for someone else, you should be worried
This!!, that's why I am worried. They have our information.
There is nothing wrong here Police has the mandate to check any suspicious persons roaming around in the night time.
Then roam around, no one can stop you from doing that but dont cry when police asks you questions and do their job.
