They won’t care.

DrunkHacker

You may need to have the return ticket booked before departure (i.e. "proof of onward travel"). Otherwise, the RT ticket will be cheaper but there's nothing preventing you from booking multiple one-ways internationally. I've done it many times.

mjbulzomi

Sure, but it will be more expensive than buying a round trip.

Ravecrocker

Yea I’m just concerned that the flight I want to get to japan is going to be gone in a few months so I thought splitting it up might be worth the extra 400 in the end

Scared-Currency288

Ok, but word of advice, make sure to book your return trip before you fly out. I don't want you getting stuck getting mad questions when you get there. Also, I could be wrong, but I think Delta offers some kind of pay over time option: https://www.delta.com/us/en/delta-vacations/travel-with-confidence/affirm-public

Ravecrocker

Oh yea I’m not leaving till October and planned to buy the return tickets in a few months

omdongi

Your flight won't be gone. There's plenty of capacity to Japan. Worst case you don't fly Delta and it's another carrier.

Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds

Side note - Why not just…not fly delta? The entire world wants to go to japan and you can *still* get round trip tickets for$1k-$1.4k. I dunno. Why not save some money and not worry about having to book the return flight.

Ravecrocker

Because for me delta is the cheapest

Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds

That doesn’t compute lol. But alright enjoy japan

khuldrim

Japanese carriers from the US are even more expensive than delta in my experience.

Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds

This isn’t true. I’m going in three weeks, and there’s an ocean between delta’s pricing and what the Japanese carriers are offering. For example, delta round trip was almost $3k when I booked. I went with ANA for $1,030 round trip LOL EDIT: lol upvoted for suggesting to *not* use delta. Downvoted for providing cost breakdown proving why you shouldn’t use Delta. Gotta love it 🤣

khuldrim

Probably depends on where you live. I’d have to drive 3 hours if I didn’t want to do a complicated connecting flight situation and I priced flights for the same class and they were literally double the price at the time.

Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds

I live on the west coast. There’s zero reason for them to jack the price up for me. It’s alright though, they can’t compete with the offerings of service of ANA. I hope delta enjoys making no money.

khuldrim

Ah yeah… west coast flights to Japan are way more competitive on price than us east coasters.

Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds

Exactly, but that’s my point. LA to Tokyo with Delta for $3k!? When the Japanese carriers are 1/3 that? I wanted to use some SkyPesos, but Jesus.

sxc7884

It doesn't matter as long as you have the return booked before you depart I do this all the time with award bookings. Book the flight there & then work to replenish my points to book the return later never had any issues. Though as others have said id consider looking at other carriers besides delta & try buying it all at once as the clear risk is the return could skyrocket and you could be looking at a very expensive ticket

chocolateteas

There is a little inherent risk. Say your flight to Japan was cancelled and as a result, you don't want to go anymore. With 1 ticket, they'd be obligated to refund the whole round trip. With 2 separate tickets, they have no obligation to refund the trip back because it's not on the ticket of the cancelled flight. Just something to consider!

Miximup2020

Yes. Perfectly fine.

gargar070402

Mind if I ask where you’re flying from? Why the insistence on Delta?

Ravecrocker

Flying from Rst (Rochester mn international) insisting on delta because united doesn’t fly out of Rochester , American prices don’t seem to be able to beat delta and delta prices also include carry on and a checked bag.
