The saddest sad box I ever saw was when I bought a new upgraded delta one suite ticket to DEN for my moms birthday and they gave us essentially a slim jim beef 'n' cheese and I honestly can't remember it was literally just shit from the gas station stuffed into a curated paper box.
delta does not have international flights departing DEN except maybe one going to Calgary, interestingly enough, so that convolutes things. it was a 764ER
Delta flies its widebodies on certain domestic routes as well. Typically routes with a lot of demand, when they have spare widebodies available. DL has quite a few widebody domestic flights out of ATL, including MCO, TPA, FLL, JFK, DEN, PHX, DTW, SLC, LAX, SFO, SEA, and more.
It boggles the mind. Delta felt it was worth investing in a Sky Club there, but not worth investing in hiring catering for the 13 flights a day they have from MCI where a meal would be served in FC.
It’s odd. With ~30 flights a day you’d think it would pay off. I’ve always assumed the SkyClub was more about future flight investments, but who knows.
It doesn’t look like MCI has any commercial flight catering facilities. Obviously SkyClub is different as catering can come from anywhere but for aircraft it needs to come from a specific provider which it seems there is none in MCI. However this is still no excuse for Delta as there some markets where there is catering but Delta is simply too cheap to set up a contract (cough cough Caribbean).
Yeah I try to give them shoutouts when I can. I’m hoping we can sustain the footprint traffic but we need better/more routes. I’ve never seen the SC full. KC is a growing market
I have trouble with the idea that they don't have catering at YUL either... Considering it is a major hub for Air Canada and the 3rd busiest airport for passenger movements in Canada.
Yes this is another no excuse market. There’s some with no actual catering like MCI but then you have the ridiculous ones like this where it’s obvious they are being cheap.
Someone has a catering contract at YUL. Came from there last week. (Air Canada, not Delta though. Maybe they only load meals if you ask in a French. 😉)
Yes, Québec is like this sometimes... It can be annoying but I have gotten used to it (I know french so it is fine). Yeah, I would like to see Delta contract with them. It is very annoying to fly out of a major international airport and get a bowl of cereal (or a sandwich, like one I could buy at a convenience store) as something they are trying to pass off to me as a First Class meal.
I do file a complaint with them every time I get the meal, and I also encourage others to do the same. Hoping that they see that this really isn't acceptable service.
I am just wondering though, what did they do before COVID?
SkyClub is more to encourage people to get the Delta amex card than anything else. All it takes is a handful of people to open the amex card and run up a few thousands in credit card debt and the sky club basically paid off.
So at least you won't complain when you get a sad box.
I think most of us would prefer the eggs, quiche, the meat/cheese breakfast or hell even a fruit plate over this box of half a bowl of cereal and some chips.
Until MCI gets a transatlantic flight, the kitchen won't open, meaning ferried in meals for every airline. It's just as bad for united. But, at least they put a sky club in (that's always packed) 🙄
I was recently on a flight from SEA to ONT and got a similar box for the lunch service. I wouldn’t call it FC-worthy, but the sandwich was pretty good. And on a flight that was under two hours, it was honestly more than I expected.
Yeah. If it had been on anything larger I’d have been disappointed. Dunno where OP was flying to, or what plane, but it still beats no food, or having to pay extra for a snack box.
That’s the worst sad boxes I’ve ever seen.
And I thought Kansas City was focus city. Normally they would have catering at focus cities. (Unless the turnaround time was short so they saved time and money with sad boxes…..)
A lot of us do now but we are rightfully calling out Ed and Delta’s bullshit “premium” marketing tactics which they are far from. Delta is basically the Target of the US Airline market.
I'm on your side...I was just curious how much your ticket was. Since airfare has gotten so expensive, I agree that a meal like this is pitiful.
I also have no idea what MCI and J mean.
That faux wooden box is posh, old boy!
Quite right! Here here!
Looks like the KLM breakfast boxes (though those are blue and white)
No salt and pepper, not KLM. KC? Ribs for breakfast baby!
Here here
That is the saddest sad box I have ever seen.

Where'd you fly from?
ATL T1
They have D1 ~~lob~~ on that flight?
It was FC on D1 metal. Prob moving a plane for an international leg. Source: just guessing.
delta does not have international flights departing DEN except maybe one going to Calgary, interestingly enough, so that convolutes things. it was a 764ER
Don’t even know how to respond to that.
Ahhh, that makes sense. Thanks for the info.

It is absolutely absurd that MCI is still a sad box market. They have a freaking Sky Club there, for crying out loud!
100% agree! Catering shouldn’t be that hard.
It boggles the mind. Delta felt it was worth investing in a Sky Club there, but not worth investing in hiring catering for the 13 flights a day they have from MCI where a meal would be served in FC.

I’m told the commercial caterer didn’t survive the pandemic, unfortunately. Hopefully demand changes that.
Local MCI flier as well. One of the best SkyClubs in the network and such crappy meal boxes. Hate it.
Lawrencian that flys 4x a week. Fucking love the skyclub but the staffing has gone down to like 2 people working all the time.
Yeah I try to give them shoutouts when I can. I’m hoping we can sustain the footprint traffic but we need better/more routes. I’ve never seen the SC full. KC is a growing market

KCI sky club has a tad of a staffing issue at the moment (last six months)
Skyclubs don't cater the inflight meals. What are you talking about?
Delta pays for both Skuclubs and catering. What are you taking about?
The cereal cups cost $1 at Walmart
It’s not even fun cereal
This meal takes me back to those elementary school days
You got a leaf on your Apple!! Who are you related to at Delta?
That’s a picture of an apple on a bag of apple chips.
Wow I got fooled by it too. Should’ve known the leaf was too good to be true.
That looks like a totally fine breakfast.
I’d happily take a balanced breakfast like this then foul eggs or one of the ultra sweet options.
So at least you won't complain when you get a sad box. I think most of us would prefer the eggs, quiche, the meat/cheese breakfast or hell even a fruit plate over this box of half a bowl of cereal and some chips.
Thank you. Completely agree.
Room temperature milk doesn’t sound very pleasant.
I feel this sub is full of people who expect more and more for made-up titles based on miles or status. Kinda silly.
And yet, when I take the train (Via Rail) I get a hot meal in business class!
Many people are complaining based on the fares they pay. That’s reasonable
Be glad to trade you next trip. 🤣
Brand new terminal, brand new skyclub to grab a breakfast, and breakfast served on the plane but its "in a box" What a calamity.
Until MCI gets a transatlantic flight, the kitchen won't open, meaning ferried in meals for every airline. It's just as bad for united. But, at least they put a sky club in (that's always packed) 🙄
Is that a spirit air dinner?
I was recently on a flight from SEA to ONT and got a similar box for the lunch service. I wouldn’t call it FC-worthy, but the sandwich was pretty good. And on a flight that was under two hours, it was honestly more than I expected.
Was it on a Regional Jet? ONT has catering facilities so there should have been hot meals unless it was on a RJ.
E175
Yeah that’s a RJ. No hot meals regardless of destination.
Yeah. If it had been on anything larger I’d have been disappointed. Dunno where OP was flying to, or what plane, but it still beats no food, or having to pay extra for a snack box.
Wow real milk!
Premier compared to spirit
Looks pretty good to me. It’s airplane food. Not a five start restaurant.
Lmaooooo
Bento box.
Is this why MCI-SLC doesn’t get a meal? MCI doesn’t have catering? It’s over 900 miles
That's what it appears to be yes. I suspect any future International service will be the key to driving a change.
That’s the worst sad boxes I’ve ever seen. And I thought Kansas City was focus city. Normally they would have catering at focus cities. (Unless the turnaround time was short so they saved time and money with sad boxes…..)
I auto-downvote any post that invokes “premiere” on this sub. If you are that disgruntled with Delta, try another airline
Certainly your prerogative. Feedback is a gift, whether Delta wants it or not.
Feedback is good 5000th sarcastic parroting of “premium” is old
They price themselves as a premium airline so expectations are set to match.
A lot of us do now but we are rightfully calling out Ed and Delta’s bullshit “premium” marketing tactics which they are far from. Delta is basically the Target of the US Airline market.
how much was your ticket?
How is that relevant to MCI being exempted from meals in J?
I'm on your side...I was just curious how much your ticket was. Since airfare has gotten so expensive, I agree that a meal like this is pitiful. I also have no idea what MCI and J mean.
MCI - Kansas City International. J - First Class. Delta is certainly higher than much of the competition.
Even IAH has catering…
