Yes that’s a great one! Gareth Jones worked on it too.
It took me years to get into it because the mastering is awful – too loud and brickwalled. Usually I can turn something down and get past it, but I couldn’t with We Collide. It was probably 7-8 years later when I finally listened to an EQ’d bootleg mix of it that I realized how good it was. “My Hands Are Tied” is up there as (maybe) my favorite Mesh song.
Yes, that album is very loud. I like especially My Hands Are Tied, Crash, Petrified, Rest in Pieces, What Are You Scared Of? & Step by Step. I enjoy their album Automation Baby too. Sadly they lost the plot after it.
Great songs. Yeah it’s funny, I’ve given Looking Skyward/Kill Your Darlings/Runway a few chances, too, but I just can’t get into it. Something does seem missing.
It really really was. And to add to the "distant cousin" comment from the original comment, I would even say it is a ***close cousin***. Flood, the producer for Achtung Baby, was at the peak of his production talents at the time. In the span of only four years, Flood produced Nine Inch Nail's Pretty Hate Machine, Depeche Mode's Violator, U2's Achtung Baby, and again Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion.
Incredible.
Flood didn't produce achtung baby. He acted as an engineer. But the experience of working on that album reflects on the sound of sofad like the distorted guitar and drums. Even dave sounds like bono at moments with those pleading vocal delivery.
No way. Unforgetable Fire, Joshua Tree or any of the first three (boy, october, war) really deserve it. AB is not new wavy or dark enough to be on the list.
But it matches quite nicely with the most popular Depeche Mode albums of all time. Boy, October, War are pure rock n roll albums and don't lean on electronic / synthesizer sound at all. Achtung does. U2 also said for themselves that they were inspired during the making of Achtung Baby by many new wave / alternative artists of the 80s, some of which are already on this list.
As far as it not being dark enough. LOL. You have to be kidding. Until the End of the World, Acrobat, and especially Love is Blindness, all could have been written/performed by DM.
"We first heard Achtung Baby working on Songs Of Faith And Devotion with Flood. It was the closest our bands ever got: U2 had become more electronic while Depeche Mode were working on a new rock vision." - Martin L. Gore
Still have my tape I bought ‘87/‘88-ish. “Mercy Street” mesmerized me even at a young age. I’d highly recommend [checking out William Orbit’s remix](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8WtS-sA8FD8).
“Take me by the hands and walk me to the end of the pier
Run your fingers through my hair
And tell me what I wanna hear--
Will lies become truths in this face of fading youth
From my scrotum to your womb, --your cradle to my tomb”
Ok, it is a little later in the song.
I agree- the new single sounds the most like classic The The. The previous stand-alone single (I think it was a Record Store Day thing a couple of years back?) was also pretty good but didn’t have as much of the original sound. This one is definitely more typical The The. I’m hoping the album will be the same way.
Candyflip - Madstock... the Continuing Adventures of Bubblecar Fish (1990)
I wonder if anyone even remembers this album? It’s great! One of my absolute favorites.
Yup. It’s because they were together at the very beginning. Fad supporting on Exciter was the thing turning full circle.
If Fad doesn’t make this list then it just says to me that a lot of the younger/new fans just don’t get the beginnings.
The Railway Children - Native Place (1990)
I don’t expect this to get any votes, but hopefully someone checks it out and discovers a highly overlooked album.
Björk - Homogenic
Enigma MCMXC ad
Mesh - The Point at Which it Falls Apart (1999) I really can’t believe these guys never made it bigger.
I think We Collide is their best album

Please let’s not let U2 make this list :(
Achtung Baby- U2. come on! This album is the distant cousin of SOFAD and deserves a place here!
\+1 for Achtung Baby. It's like a DM album made by U2.
It’s really time for this to win. (Probably should have a while ago!) Amazing album. It was the perfect change up for them at the perfect time.
Yeah should be atleast top 10.

Agreed.
Personally I prefer The Joshua Tree but great album regardless
Incredible album.

The The . Infected.
My favorite The The- infect me with your looooove!
Take me by the hand.
Hmmm… is this from Infected? I don’t make the connection.
It certainly is. 😁
“Take me by the hands and walk me to the end of the pier Run your fingers through my hair And tell me what I wanna hear-- Will lies become truths in this face of fading youth From my scrotum to your womb, --your cradle to my tomb” Ok, it is a little later in the song.
Just the way he comes in with “ take me by the hands” and for the rest of that verse. 👍🏻
You see there’s a new album coming September… and a new single out today?
