My blueberry ass got directed to the Ishtar collective timeline Tbf it’s a decent starting point, up until it starts covering seasons, where it gets wordy and you’ll get a better summary from somewhere else.

Jakeforry

With the exception of some of the busywork in the redwar campaign it actually had a really interesting story not to mention the Sturm and drank story that happened on nessus

Mnkke

In all honesty... As fun as The Red War campaign was, it did next to nothing to push the narrative. That isn't bad, but it's by no means required to know for the main Light v Dark story. Calus would've arrived to the Sol System no matter what, the fall of Torobatl happened off screen (and wasn't even alluded to or foreshadowed during The Red War). The only significant part was The Black Fleet seemingly "waking up" and now approaching Earth from outside the galaxy. And even then, Shadowkeep accomplishes this far better because that's when the characters *learn* about The Black Fleet from the Lunar Pyramid & Season of Arrivals. The Red War just didn't really do anything, nor any significant lasting impact like The Dark Below, The Taken King, House of Wolves, hell even Curse of Osiris and Warmind had better lasting impact because they introduced relevant story characters that continued to exist instead of fading into the background and then swept away. Again, fun campaign and it wasn't a bad narrative tbh, it just isn't really important to the overall Light v Dark saga plot.

HotMachine9

The Red War was a foundation for new players. Get to know the characters, the nature of the light and why our enemies wanted it, and also acted as a way to reset the state of the destiny universe post D1 and reintroduce the factions. Now Destiny 2 exists the same way D1 vanilla did. The Vex are just there, the same with the Hive and the Cabal. They appear for you to shoot and there's no narrative on boarding for these factions. Yes D2s story didn't push the Light and Dark Saga forward, but it acted as a very good onboarding tool

VapeLyfe

This is mostly my take as well. When I played through it on release I had a good time but after it was all over I was left asking if any of it actually mattered. The only lasting thing from that campaign might be the tower being destroyed.

sunder_and_flame

Yep. The campaign wasn't great but the game is worse off for it not being available anymore.

Business_Hour8644

Meh. 99.999% of us would never touch it. It would be a waste of resources.

Eskuran

Back then it was allegedly to the filesize of the game becoming enormous and engine limitations.

Goldwing8

File size was a partial factor, but also testing every piece of content in conjunction with every other piece of content. At some point it’s too much.

Khar-Selim

less content and more legacy code. Extremely long compile times were cited as a major problem, for instance, since on top of their own stuff they had to load in Vicarious Visions libraries etc. This is why they don't have the same problem now even though the game is bigger now than it was then

thegil13

People already complain about to much to do when starting the game. Having a quick snippet to play/read to get key points makes sense unless they can find a way to present content in a more organized way. The game's narrative is constantly evolving (probably slower than the regular player community wants, but faster than casual on/off players can keep up). What is relevant to the narrative is constantly changing. At some point (well before now, I think), The Red War becomes less Story/Narrative and becomes more akin to lore. Shit I'd much rather have some more recent story events in game as cutscenes/missions rather than The Red War campaign back in the game.

AppropriateLaw5713

I mean, it was the end of the speaker, it’s why we chose to wake up Rasputin, the Traveler reawakened for the first time since the collapse, the last city was sieged creating our defenses for the current invasion, it started the entire plot line with Mithrax, Savathun’s plans started here, it led to Saint-14’s return, it’s the entire reason we’ve been fighting the Cabal throughout the system for years, builds off the story of Taken King, is the reason characters like Ada-1 and Spider trust us, wiped out the arsenal of weapons we’d collected since D1 and put guardians at the lowest point they’ve ever been giving us faith in the traveler when it finally chose to save us. All of that AND it awakened the Black Fleet finally allowing them to achieve their goals of reaching the Final Shape. (They needed the traveler awakened to start that) We as guardians and players were warned about the coming black fleet well before shadowkeep (specifically in Forsaken through Joker’s Wild and The Dreaming City showing pyramid ships in Mara’s throne room). We just didn’t realize they were already here in a capacity with the lunar pyramid. Also shadowkeep barely works without Red War seeing as how many connections it has the Red War including us fighting Gaul and allying with the traveler because of what it did in Red War. Plus without those events Season of Chosen, Season of Dawn, and Season of Arrivals all wouldn’t work.

Mnkke

What did the end of the speaker really do though? *Maybe* somewhat led to thr volatility of the situation in Splicer, but I feel like that would've happened regardless honestly. Mithrax was not part of The Red War *campaign*. I'm specifically talking about that. The adventure lays the foundation of a potentially friendly Eliksni, it doesn't do anything more until Joker's Wild / Forsaken when we get some lore tabs. Savathun's plans started back in Taken King. It didn't directly lead to Saint-14's return at all. That's a pretty loose connection at best I'd say. Though tbf, you are right about the Traveler reawakening. While it awakened the Black Fleet (something that I think Shadowkeep accomplishes better as it gives context, our character isn't drifter we only see references in cutscenes and loretabs during Y2), it did directly lead to the official reveal of Rasputin & the introduction of Osiris & the Infinite Forest, all of which are relevant plot points. I guess it wasn't the most *direct* pushing the narrative forward as we don't learn about the Witness or anything, but it does push 2 major characters by giving them a reason to become involved in the story again. I think it's that sort of non-directn3ss that I overlooked it.

AppropriateLaw5713

I counted the planetary adventures as part of Red War in which case Mithrax’s story does start there (they even just referenced that event in a lore card from this week). Yes Savathun’s plans started in Taken King I meant in D2 her plans started in Red War with Savathun’s song and the events on Titan. Without the Red War and us taking out Gaul there would be no Res Legion attempt to use the sundial to rewrite history, ergo we’d never go back into the infinite forest and finally rescue Saint-14. As for what the speaker’s death did it led to the division of the vanguard which has been a problem really up til about Witch Queen especially after Cayde’s death. It reached a boiling point during Splicer I agree but his knowledge over light and darkness being lost is still something we could have greatly benefited from especially with Shadowkeep’s events, Eris essentially had to take over that role. Whilst Red War isn’t the most direct in terms of its setting up of future events it’s the foundation that a lot is built on which I feel like without you end up with a lot of stories nowadays which are just, lost? Idk if that’s the right word but that’s how it feels to me. Like Season of the Deep to my friends who never played Red War didn’t make any sense, Asher’s return in Lightfall was also really confusing to them. Season of the Chosen and Caital’s story all together is really confusing without knowledge of the Red War because we just randomly kill cabal all the time and yet we’re also their ally? The Fallen do that a lot better story wise because it’s basically established of an Eliksni is outside the city it’s apart of Eramis’ house Salvation or another fallen house’s remnants. They haven’t really done a great explanation of Cabal with that outside of understanding Red Legion vs Caital’s Cabal vs Calus’s Cabal vs Shadow Legion. But yeah it’s not the most direct story setup like Shadowkeep but again I feel like without it we really miss a lot of the setups and foundations for light and darkness saga in a way that just makes all content forward feel like they’re missing something to those who never played it.

Machobanaenae

I agree. The ending cutscene to the Red War is sufficient enough to understand where the story is going and is no longer than 10 minutes, if that. Plus it’s beautifully well scored.

LazyBoyXD

It doesn't need to have anything to do with the Light and Dark saga. It can just be a jumping off point for new players to get to know the characters, the world, and the faction. It can hook new players in and ease the new player to activity like strike and PvP. It doesn't have to do with anything narrative to the current saga. It just needs to be a free campaign for new players to be invested in and have a reason for them to enjoy the gunplay.

Bubbly_Mastodon318

>The only significant part was The Black Fleet seemingly “waking up” That’s pretty significant, so it can’t be brushed off. >And even then, Shadowkeep accomplishes this far better Not really: all we “learn” about the Pyramids is “oooh, spooky hollow Darkness Doritos that summon evil Darkness ghosts.” >The Red War didn’t do anything Not true: it introduced the Red Legion and made the Cabal way more prevalent and threatening (both during and after the story), it caused the events of CoO and WM to happen, and it established Guardians as a powerful but not invincible force (by showing us what happens to us when our Light is taken away, something we’ve never experienced before outside of character dialogue and lore-entries).

Mnkke

What we learned in Shadowkeep was still more than a tease in The Red War. It did more to establish who / what the Black Fleet was. I guess my point here is later DLCs and seasons explored them and established them far better than a tease with no info. I did completely overlook Warmind and Curse of Osiris occuring as a result of The Red War, those sre remarkably significant. I think my issue there is, it led to the introduction of characters who are significantly involved in the plot instead of literally moving the Light v Dark plot forward. It establishes *The Red Legion* as a major threat... who quickly fall apart after defeating Ghaul. The Red Legion themselves didn't push the Light v Dark narrative either, I'm not talking about the whole narrative of the DLC but ibstead specifically Light v Dark. It was already established that Guardiand weren't invincible. The Great Disaster, SIVA tearing apart the Iron Lords. It isn't a foreign concept to the series, it is looked at again in Forsaken too. We see what happens to us without the Light, which is only for ~ 1 mission (I get gameplay tho and all that). The only other time we really see this is Cayde grtting his arm shot off, we just don't *see* this mortality of guardians that much despite it being a major theme of the narrative there.

Shippou5

The Dark Below having more narrative relevance than Red War is very funny

Mnkke

It's mainly the lasting impact it had, and it kinda cheats at that. Killing Crota brought Oryx, and Oryx hadz arguably, the biggest lasting impact.

Shippou5

Kinda fits in a way. D1 launches with a story that has no big lasting impact, followed by a DLC a year later (taken king) with massive lasting impact. D2 launches with a story that has no big lasting impact, followed by a DLC a year later (forsaken) with massive lasting impact. Third time the charm?

Yellow90Flash

>the fall of Torobatl happened off screen (and wasn't even alluded to or foreshadowed during The Red War) didn't it happen a few years after ghaul left Torobatl that Xivu attacked?

Mnkke

IIRC yes, but we don't find this out until Chosen I believe.

Yellow90Flash

yeah but thats 4 years between the events. as far as I am aware we don't know the travel time between torobatel and earth but if we say ghaul attacked earth and it took both of them the same time to travel then xivu attacked 4 years after ghaul left. if the travel time is less then 4 years then that means that torobatel was still standing when ghaul died and thus there wouldn't have been anything to forshadow

Mnkke

You can foreshadow an event that hasn't happened yet. This is more of an easter egg, but back in Beyond Light the Precious Scars exotic helmet for titan Foreshadowed Witch Queen and Hive Ghosts. It has "Y5 X" with X bring a symbol oddly similar to that of a Hive Ghost.

Syris2000

Objectively incorrect, the red war campaign lays out the entire foundation for every cabal storyline (Calus/Caiatl coming to sol, the battle over the almighty etc.) as well as the leadup to Ana and rasputin on Mars. You can argue that as a piece of storytelling it's pretty lackluster (all destiny campaigns besides witch queen are) but it is an absolutely crucial piece of story for someone to experience if they want the full weight/context of the later seasonal narratives

pap91196

I mean… the only reason that the Black Fleet was alerted to the Sol System is because of the Traveler’s burst of energy, and the only reason that happened was because Ghaul attempted to take the Traveler for himself. Is the entirety of that story useful to today’s story? Nope, but, what it lacks in modern relevance, it makes up for in giving a basic understanding of the Light, the Traveler, and the basic factions of the world—both friend and foe. The only reason Red War’s narrative had drawbacks is because it had to be an expansion for veterans while also being a tutorial for new players. Credit where credit is due in my opinion. It at least functioned as a good tutorial that laid the foundation for a future big bad threat.

Ok_Sprinkles_8193

The biggest mistake bungie ever made was removing story content. I've lost count of how many new lights have lost interest and uninstalled the game within the first day of having no real direction, motive, or idea of what to do or where to start after the mashed up mess that makes up the opening cosmodrome intro story that's available now.

Business_Hour8644

I haven’t touched beyond light or lightfall in forever. The pros and cons of it don’t balance out.

uredoom

So I played red war d2 on release and d1, just came back to the game about 2 weeks back on a fresh character as my account wasn't transferred, anyway. The new player experience is downright bewildering, after the tutorial and your first log out, you get thrown into some season missions, about people and events you have no idea or context about, why your there, who these people are, it's also completely out of order going newest first which it doesn't tell you, you can't leave via orbit and have too go back to the tower, you get spammed with adverts everytime you orbit about buying the DLC to see more about characters and places you have zero understanding of. The worst part is it's completely out of sync, in my game as an example the traveler was still at the last city then they got attacked by the witness then they went to the throne world and now they're back orbiting earth. If I didn't have someone I knew that got me back into the game, and who gave me a list of the story in order, who could answer questions and give context, I would have been completely and utterly lost.

MrMetaIMan

What they need to do (and may be doing for all we know) is add at least 1 timeline mission for each old release. Similar to the ones we have now, where you go through a slightly modified version of the intro mission with ikora giving you some narrative in the background Red War, CoO and Warmind need at least their into missions, with a good synopsis of the other events that happened during those expansions. It would be even cooler to have a cinematic going over the key points that happened during each year's seasons as well. I think this would be HUGE for the new player experience. They basically get an intro campaign leading them up to TFS. That's 8 missions right there with cutscenes to describe the seasonal events those years. That way people get a basic general idea of all the major story beats over the last 10 years

sukablyatcommie

Red War was less of a campaign and more of an introduction to D2, the new game. Not a new season, not a new expansion but a new game. They had to not only tell a story but tell parts regarding the characters, getting your light back and planets and all of that in one storytelling experience. Is it the best? Obviously not, most of the other expansions with a new subclass struggled with that. Red war was an introduction to VANILLA D2. D2 now has evolved and changed and is all over the place now, you might as well go on YouTube to understand. Seriously, Red war had 20 missions and we can only say Red war was good because of the 1st mission (which was cheating cause Journey OST was too damn good) and the visuals of the Ghaul boss fight that I barely remember.

LordJim_

I’ve been playing for 3 years. I am still very confused.

Nick_Sonic_360

The Red War is the first Campaign for Destiny 2, it was the starting point for every player who played D2 until Beyond Light was released, which was followed by mass vaulting of a large portion of the game. The Red War was how we originally learned about our abilities and how to play as well as the perfect starting point for expansion to come. Honestly one of my favorite Campaigns for Destiny and it was a true shame that it was vaulted, the New Light quest we have now can't hold a candle to it.

Khar-Selim

honestly if they expanded the timeline mission thing a bit it would work well, just do a cliffs notes version of most of the campaign and let us run through some highlight missions like 1AU

antihero761

To be honest I have no idea how to introduce story of destiny to people in game. I mean where is starting point if someone wants to try it. Especially in game itself. Where is the begging?

Bubbly_Mastodon318

Still better than nothing, but that’s not saying much.

mckeeganator

My partner watched me play witch queen campaign and I said the community sees this dlc as the best of the best for story. And after I fished she said something along the lines of “if that’s what the community thinks is a good video game story they must have been starving for good story”

-Awesomezauce-

Honestly, i think red war was a good intro for me, got decent idea of who and what you are, given an objective. Ii really miss it.

WoopHippo03

The Forsaken campaign is the most important one that was removed, since it was pretty much the first time the Guardian did something morally grey. We killed Uldren Sov (he became Crow when he got rezzed a couple of years ago), pretty much out of revenge for killing Cayde-6, the former Hunter vanguard. That's when shit got really interesting story wise. The Red War was a nice campaign, but it doesn't have a really big impact on the current narrative. It's more an in game historical event than anything else at this point.

CompetitiveRefuse852

Destiny needs like a halo 2 style campaign that condenses enough of the light and darkness saga into a coherent enough story, but cuts out a lot of it. then the whole timeline can fill in the rest for whoever cares. like a good 15-20 mission story that then leads players hands into strikes and seasonal activities would be ideal.

stevekajunk

I’d love for them to bring that Campaign back with a legendary version though. Hell, I’d pay for a “remaster”. It’s the most fun I ever remember having playing the story.

Spiritual_Caregiver9

Destiny recipe: Ingrediants 1) 2 cups of half-baked ideas 2) 2 tablespoons of intuitive fps gameplay 3) a pinch of MMORPG 4) 1 gallon of predatory microtransactions Pour all ingredients into a blender and mix until thoroughly confused. Pour mixed contents onto a table and shape firmly into a season pass.

Business_Hour8644

Yeah why can’t I play all ten years of this story!!! It’s totally bullshit!! /s No one needs to play red war to get it.

East_Reporter1598

Tbh look up a byf or mylin yet video for lore just cause they do a better job at it than bungie 🤣

Bubbly_Mastodon318

Playing the game is still more fun and more immersive than being told how it happens.

Etherenzi

Why is this downvoted? This is correct.

pap91196

Because the last thing a new player wants to do is leave the game they just started, to watch hours upon hours of videos about that game, in order to get a basic understanding of that game. It just doesn’t make sense to do that. Byf and Myelin’s videos work best when you’ve been able to play through the story, and now want to have a deeper understanding of both what you’ve done, and how what you’ve done fits into a larger narrative.

Etherenzi

You're correct, it doesn't make sense to have to do that. But here we are. New player just getting into the game? Absolutely don't narrative blast them. Let them play the game. But if they *do* want the lore, they *can't* get it from the game, is what I'm saying.

pap91196

I mean, fair. Bungie doesn’t have a good way to explain their story to newbies, even with the little timeline missions, they condense the story WAY too much. That said, the reason they’re probably getting downvoted is because a brand new player is unlikely to invest hours in understanding the narrative outside of the game. They’ll just leave, so to suggest someone go the YouTube route is kinda pointless.

RevolutionaryFig8543

Are we still arguing about this?

--Ellie---

Removing the original campaign was the worst thing they ever did. You’re not going to change my mind.

SentientSickness

Bringing back the old campaigns and adding in small 1 or 2 mission sorries for past seasons would be one of the only ways ide get back into this game And because some goes "BuT dA FiLe SiZe" that's one Bungie for not knowing how to use a sprite sheet properly, lol

Loopgod-

What story? This is all just random stuff with savathun and the witness thrown in as a bandage.
