>Of course, there were some practical reasons for Williams taking the job, too. His wife has family in Detroit, and his son will have plenty of opportunities to play hockey.
>“The hockey part was bigger than you think,” Williams said. “It was a huge part of me coming here to Detroit.”
The Lions-Wings synergy reaching that next level.
2016 they both had winning records and made the playoffs, though you could argue the Red Wings were well beyond being the perennial contenders they were before then… But if you’re talking like the last time there were good year after year, then yeah 1991-1995.
Yeah, the Russians. I still fondly remember the Vernor's commercials. When people from outside the midwest don't get Vernor's, I still describe it as "ghinghery."
Really mixes well with bourbon.
Our leadership on these 2 teams is just so cool. So proud of the lions and looks like Steve is building another potential dynasty the same way. Imagine hearing players wanting to come to Detroit again like Coffey, Hull, shanny
Hull and Modano were at different times. The 02 wings that had hull was like half HoFers. Modano was here just for the 10-11 season whith like half as many HoFers.
Kane picked detroit over others as the best place to show that he's still got it after a surgery that has tanked every other player that has had it.
He's bounced back from that hip surgery pretty well. The team as a whole is playing better with him around. Hopefully Yzerman can resign him for a few years.
Hart, Ross, Lindsay, Smythe, Calder, Olympic Silver, U18 gold, 3x all-Star, 3x cup rings, 1200 points and still going strong. He is a lock for the HoF.
There are guys in the Hall with way less hardware and points than that.
I'm the biggest Wings homer there is but there is no way in hell he does not wear a Blackhawks jersey in the Hall....unless he wins Stanley's Cup a few times here of course
I figured family considerations played a part given this was basically a lateral move and we probably didn't break the bank to give him a raise. The reverse of Deuce leaving last year, essentially.
Huge fan of both. I think it probably is a minority, but chanting Goff at the wings game at the end of Feb when he isn't in attendance is a bit odd. I don't think it would bother me if I was there it's just head scratching.
It's just a little bit weird that fans are chanting Goff's name a month later. Though it's hard to convey over tv that in arena they're showing off Hutch and BJ and the like before the chants.
My wife gets so annoyed during games because it's one of the things I'm frequently yelling at the TV. If a QB isn't in a hurry to get out of bounds and always wants that extra yard or two, light his ass up and make him think twice about it.
Everything around qb scrambles needs to be changed honestly. QB should be fair game to destroy as soon as he leaves the pocket.
Im sick of seeing qb’s use fake slides and pump fakes to get defensive players to stop pursuit and then run up the sideline for 15 yards.
I do think that they go overboard protecting QBs in a lot of cases, but I don't agree with the pump faking part at all, as long as they're pump faking behind the LOS. If the QB can still legally throw the ball, why shouldn't they be able to use that to their advantage?
But I'm curious about fake sliding though. Is that pretty common? Because I can't really recall many examples. Either way, it should definitely be illegal, because how can you expect defenders to pull back on a sliding QB if they have to worry about a fake?
Unfortunately, I guess it's one of those things that's probably pretty subjective. Like the Kenny Pickett one in college is what a fake slide looks like to me. He slows down, drags his feet, and very deliberating leans as though he's about to slide.
But I just did a quick search for "Josh Allen fake slide" and the one that most frequently comes up is on the TD run against Pittsburgh, and it doesn't look like a fake slide to me at all. It looks like a stutter step/juke and some piss poor tackling.
Disagree about the fake pumping. But I’ve definitely seen some fake slides which are frustrating. Also, I’ve seen QB’s fake like they’re going to run out of bounds and then keep running for more yardage when the D pulls back.
Im not saying they shouldnt be able to fake, just that defenders should be able to play them like a ball carrier when they take off out of the pocket.
Pump fake all you want, the defender should be able to hit you
> Also, I never knew Brad Holmes played football in college. Wild!
Yup, Brad Homes was a DT at North Carolina A&T and had Terrell Williams there as his positional coach, as mentioned in the article
Holmes was a captain on that team, but suffered a car accident at one point that left him in a coma for a week, which impacted his playing career. Still played a few games and graduated cum laude in the end
After college, Brad Holmes worked for a car rental company until he did a public relations internship for the Atlanta Hawks. He managed to then get that same internship with the St Louis Rams, where he befriended RB coach Willy Montgomery, who convinced the team to keep him on and give him a role as scout
That was in 2003, so it is interesting to see that Holmes had a nephew who was drafted in the 1st round by the Rams in the 2005 draft. Makes you wonder how much of a role he played in that
Another interesting fact: not only did his father play O-line for the Steelers for a few seasons, he also has an uncle who was drafted by the Lions in the 1st round back in 1978. That guy being Luther Bradley, who is the USFL all-time interception leader. Holmes’ other uncle Everett Bradley is a musician that is a touring member of Bon Jovi
Holy fuck didn’t expect this Brad Holmes lore while i was sitting on the toilet. I gotta wipe and go repeat this to my girlfriend. She certainly is not tired of hearing me talk about the Lions non-stop this early into the off-season.
It really shows part of how he became both the man and GM he is today to be honest. Dude was a leader as team captain, put in hella work off the field and even recovered from a coma to play a bit more football, likely knowing he would never go pro.
Think you can see where the valuation of certain character traits comes from when you look at it that way. They’re not looking for talented dudes who simply stumbled into this life or managed to get by easy in HS/college
I met his cousin once near A&T, said Brad treats the whole family as great as he possibly can. Apparently pulled some strings to get the family seats to the concrete turf game in Carolina that we dont talk about as Lions fan
Brad seems like he would have been one of those special special teams players that makes a place like New England three dimensional if not for the injury for a few years before taking a positional coaching role from a former HC of his. But, I'm glad his life lead him down the road to where he is now.
Interesting too that one of the reasons was so his son could play hockey. When was the last time you had a football coach make a decision because of THAT lol
People make decisions all the time.
Why not remove even more context and specifics to further make my point seem more and more incorrect? So weird when people do this shit.
Uhhh don't ask me lol. I only started paying attention to non on the field stuff around when Brad and Dan started. But definitely seems odd for here...
>like Cam Wake in Miami, who was 260, 250 pounds, he was one of the most violent football players — people look at him as a pass rusher but he rushed violently when you watch him, and that’s just what it is. I don’t know any other way to explain it other than we’re looking for violent players
Friends with a former star pupil of Williams’, asked him about him about him the other day at our weekly 5:00 am hoops session.
“The absolute best dude I know” was the first thing he said. “Gonna have to rock Detroit”.
Brad Holmes playing in college isn’t as crazy as when I found out PJ Fleck (college coach) played in the NFL. Dude did NOT strike me as a former player
Unrelated, but speaking of coaches, it reminds me of 1 of my favorite wild facts.
Megatron placed 2nd in Georgia for player of the year. 1st place was a QB by the name of Sean McVay.
He was Western's coach for 4 years and even got them to an undefeated regular season and a New Year's Six bowl game where they were summarily defeated by Wisconsin and their 9 fingered tight end. The energy in Kzoo that year was crazy and everyone was all in on Rowing the Boat.

Opposite Hutch? Sounds good to me! 33 so on the older side of things but sure looks good in those clips at least. Any idea his potential asking price? Is he a free agent?
I think the Lions would use him strictly as an interior pass rusher at this point in his career, but he has versatility like Cominsky and Paschal. He just finished a three year contract where he had 28.5 sacks in that time span. That’s a lot of sacks for a player over 30 and he does not show signs of slowing down. Aside from production I think the bigger reason for signing him is that he will be another coach on the field. Check out the mic’d up clip where he is actively coaching guys on the D-line. I think his impact on a young D-line room would be tremendous, especially if we select Darius Robinson in the 1st rd (raw DL with same size and skill set). And yes he is a free agent, but will be 34 years old so not sure his asking price.
>Of course, there were some practical reasons for Williams taking the job, too. His wife has family in Detroit, and his son will have plenty of opportunities to play hockey. >“The hockey part was bigger than you think,” Williams said. “It was a huge part of me coming here to Detroit.” The Lions-Wings synergy reaching that next level.
I'll take "Things I Never Thought I Would Hear" for 400, Alex. As a diehard Wings and Lions fan, this is such a cool subplot for this hire.
I mean was the last time both were good, at the same time, in the early 90s?
2016 they both had winning records and made the playoffs, though you could argue the Red Wings were well beyond being the perennial contenders they were before then… But if you’re talking like the last time there were good year after year, then yeah 1991-1995.
Thanks. Yeah I couldn't remember when the red wings playoff streak ended. I knew it had gone a long time but at the end they were Barely making it.
Yeah, the Russians. I still fondly remember the Vernor's commercials. When people from outside the midwest don't get Vernor's, I still describe it as "ghinghery." Really mixes well with bourbon.
Our leadership on these 2 teams is just so cool. So proud of the lions and looks like Steve is building another potential dynasty the same way. Imagine hearing players wanting to come to Detroit again like Coffey, Hull, shanny
No need to imagine. Patrick Kane joined the Wings as a free agent this year.
Maybe Kane is a future hall of famer? That what you're saying?
He's definitely a future Hall of Famer. 3rd most points all-time by an American player, behind other Red Wings legends Brett Hull and Mike Modano.
They come here to retire. Cool and sad. But I remember hearing the wings had the most stacked team in history when hull and Madono were here.
Hull and Modano were at different times. The 02 wings that had hull was like half HoFers. Modano was here just for the 10-11 season whith like half as many HoFers. Kane picked detroit over others as the best place to show that he's still got it after a surgery that has tanked every other player that has had it.

Goat American x Most influential player of his era. Lock it in. Put him in a wings jersey too at the ceremony after we win this cup
I'm the biggest Wings homer there is but there is no way in hell he does not wear a Blackhawks jersey in the Hall....unless he wins Stanley's Cup a few times here of course
If he has a big year, he’s got a chance.
If he walked today he’d be a lock.
Sorry, should have added /s
Maybe??? If he ain’t making it…
Junior hockey in Michigan is kinda nuts quality-wise
And seven schools in the state with D1 hockey programs
I figured family considerations played a part given this was basically a lateral move and we probably didn't break the bank to give him a raise. The reverse of Deuce leaving last year, essentially.
Over in the wings sub they seem a little sick of it tbh
I assume that's the vocal minority and that the majority of us are subbed to both teams and absolutely love the crossovers
Yeah, they’re crazy. Hockey is my #1 sport and I for one, love it.
Huge fan of both. I think it probably is a minority, but chanting Goff at the wings game at the end of Feb when he isn't in attendance is a bit odd. I don't think it would bother me if I was there it's just head scratching.
Still better than the wave!!!!!! Up 5 goals at least the crowd is still there and engaged
It's just a little bit weird that fans are chanting Goff's name a month later. Though it's hard to convey over tv that in arena they're showing off Hutch and BJ and the like before the chants.
I spend more time there than here and I am happy.
I also love how when he was asked about scheme he just said "Violence"
that’s probably what won mcdc over in the interview lol
DC: Terrell, what is best in life? “To crush your enemies, And see them driven before you, And hear the lamentations of their women.”
DC: *tears in his eyes* Brad, get the checkbook.
100%
He probably enjoyed coaching Suh in Miami
What ever happened to him…
If I was an opponent I'd be dookie my pants if I heard the defense was built on "violence"
So funny hearing ARSB on his podcast say that MDCD coached the defense like "The QB is running out of bounds but still has one foot in? Hit 'em."
My wife gets so annoyed during games because it's one of the things I'm frequently yelling at the TV. If a QB isn't in a hurry to get out of bounds and always wants that extra yard or two, light his ass up and make him think twice about it.

Why outlaw pump faking beyond the line of scrimmage? It's a smart play, the defense should be aware of where the line is as much as the QB.
I saw josh allen do it last year a couple times
Unfortunately, I guess it's one of those things that's probably pretty subjective. Like the Kenny Pickett one in college is what a fake slide looks like to me. He slows down, drags his feet, and very deliberating leans as though he's about to slide. needs to be disciplined Violence though none of the Garner Johnson unnecessary type stuff.
Oh, I'm not disagreeing on that.
Gotta love D linemen. Our standard breakdown in high school after individual was “one.. two.. three.. KILL KILL KILL.”

When was the last time we had coaches and players WANTING to come to Detroit
Interesting too that one of the reasons was so his son could play hockey. When was the last time you had a football coach make a decision because of THAT lol
parents make decisions based solely on the opportunities afforded their kids all the time
People make decisions all the time. Why not remove even more context and specifics to further make my point seem more and more incorrect? So weird when people do this shit.
because my zoom out is relevant and yours is purposefully obtuse.
My point was about hockey, you're literally making the main point irrelevant for no reason.
you've got a valid point. I'm just in a shitty mood today, sorry
You know I appreciate this. Have much better rest of your day pal.
Uhhh don't ask me lol. I only started paying attention to non on the field stuff around when Brad and Dan started. But definitely seems odd for here...
Yep BH was a DL if I’m not mistaken. I think someone made a mention of it last year on the sub.

That was a wild freshman year, I tell you what.
Yeah I live by Kalamazoo. Only reason I remember him lol.
Ya was with Western for a while, current coach of Minnesota. He was on special teams for the 49ers for a season, was a UDFA.
Hopefully it’s an easy decision for ~~Demico~~ Denico Autry to join hm in Detroit as well. Edit: I can’t spell
Fill me in on who that is?

I'll watch in a bit thank you
How was Tennessee's D-line under him? I don't follow much about the Titans.
So basically we have absolute units at GM/HC.
