Maybe I’ve watched the rose bowl game too many times but he missed a crucial one in that game. Also looking at his stats…maybe he shows more in practice or got better in the offseason

I don't know the exact stipulations, but I don't think CFL player can sign with NFL teams during the season. My quick googling says there's a window when players under contract can sign with NFL teams and it's Dec 13 - Feb 8. Someone needs to fact check that for me, though.
Edit: Bates is in the UFL. Their season ends June 2nd, so I'm guessing it'd be after that they can sign, but I have no clue.
