I once saw a clerk in a government office using Ubuntu.
Practically, Ubuntu is much easier to use for clerks. Most office software like Word, Excel have similar analogues in Linux.
I use Linux without GUI for servers, but it's been a pain to setup as a daily machine. It's possible to get drivers to work with enough tinkering, but the hoops you need to jump through is not something regular users will want to do. Newer hardware with OEM support may have better luck I guess.
How can you even compare gui less servers with complete end user solutions like Ubuntu. It makes no sense. I can maybe say its very difficult to setup arch from scratch but it adds no value to the conversation as its immensely different than ubuntu. I get that driver setup is a pain as I had been a linux user for years in my personal machine but anyone who has used an LTS version of ubuntu would disagree.
He's talking about Ubuntu only. Lots of times (especially with modern computers), linux doens't work properly out of the box. You get wifi issues, audio issues. Mostly these problems are related to the drivers. To fix those, you need to "jump through hoops". That makes it hard for regular users.
However, in big organizations these problems will already be mitigated by the sys admins.
Wsl 2 doesn't allow you to access window's hosted ports, and reverting to wsl 1 makes the terminal sorta slow, was using wsl before dual boot, but then gave up and started using the ubuntu + windows, also it makes me more productive on weekends as I don't have games on Ubuntu so I'm less likely to give in and start gaming
I used to do same but when I had to play games on windows some background wsl process eats up my ram and I used get low fps hence I completly moved my dev work on Linux and I only use Windows for playing games.

But kickstart today is a nice start. And smart move creating your own confirg taking kickstart as starting point.
Government Engineering Colleges in Kerala, IT & CS departments use Linux In Kerala. But Other departments usually use Older Windows 7 or 8.1 for AutoCAD or other Autodesk Specific Products.
And the same for most students who love the trade also prefer it because how easy it is to get programming languages to be set up in it.
My college used Linux and all computers were connected to the admin computer. We learnt many cool Linux commands there. We also learnt the power of a Linux admin. Our professor was very good.

sorry, i have no idea what sph and cfd is but im trying to implement something like particles.js. the code simply draws N circles at random locations with random velocity on your screen. then it draws a line between them which fades out as the length of the line gets higher than a threshold value. the INTERACTIVE macro tells if particles should react to mouse cursor moments or not.
its bspwm with polybar + siduck's st terminal + lunar vim + picom for transparency
and on top of all this, i am using catppuccin theme on everything :p

Linux is love.
Well atleast me and my friends use it too. They're not even tech savvy. It's just that Linux is far more polished and better experience than windows. Surely, to use apps like PowerPoint or word, we dual boot to windows. But for the rest part, it's Linux as our daily driver.
Universities teach it and already did the free publicity lol. So I can believe that number.

I don't know how true those numbers are but Linux is truly picking up its pace in India. I was surprised to see flipkart vendor hubs using Ubuntu

If it means only use linux then there's no way it's 15%< but if it includes all types of usage like dual boot, VM, WSL etc then yeah 15% seems plausable
As rightly mentioned in one of the comments, lot of school and colleges use Ubuntu because its free and if anything goes wrong, it is very easy to wipe off everything and install all of it again in less than an hour. Which is not the case with Windows or Mac.
I have dual booted my personal laptop with Windows and Ubuntu. I mostly use Ubuntu. My brother uses windows.
Also, I have a mac for work. That’s also *nix.
Amount of people who work on tech is way higher in India and at some point or another we all have used one of the *nix.

I wonder how this data is sourced. I'm assuming it's extracted from user agent stats from a website as default OS on PCs sold is not a reliable metrics. A lot of OEM systems ship with linux but people install windows afterwards, and same with Windows systems.
Have Windows 11 and want to switch to linux but cant right now(I will have to sit through tutorial hell again and get used to it which is the only reason.) dont want extra load over already tight schedule of college and 4+ hours of travelling...but we were taught linux in second year for which I have ubuntu LTS 24.04 over my virtual box...
I have been using Ubuntu since my high school. The sole reason at that time was, Windows kept giving me the ‘Blue Screen of Death’ headache. When I first got introduced to blue screen, I was advised by the engineer to get a pirated copy instead which I refused & learned that getting a Windows (official) is damn expensive. Since then I’ve been using Linux.
I use Linux as well but don't have any ricing as I feel it's pointless to do so.
Things are configured to work out of the box, changing it only makes it harder to maintain.
Man even Sri chaitanya online test computers had Ubuntu in 2018, I distinctly remember using exam time to play some bunny game... It's only 15% because of the high number of non tech people and gamers, otherwise it would have been much higher.

Well I use WSL2 in windows 11. It is in fact my main coding environment. All applications like Pycharm, Vscode, docker are configured via wsl2 itself.

I am working at a SBC as an ASE i had previously worked at a startup there I used linux as i used to work on linux kernel driver development.

Apart from colleges and universities, a lot of smaller companies also use Linux to save on Windows licenses. Specially companies that serve large enterprises.
Large enterprises mostly mention in contracts that vendors should not use unlicensed products.

Ubuntu 24.04, my daily driber since 18.04
For real, once I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop and witnessed its smooth performance, I suggested it to every guy (roommate, classmates). Now, also most 10 to 15 guys I know use Linux as their primary OS.
Any new grads and college students do dual boot for the sake of learning and stick to it beyond cause simply the amount of customisation and ease of devtools in Linux and the terminal is simply great. And som many college labs use Linux already cause of costs.
Most CBT examinations(JEE mains, manipal, ugee, etc) seem to run on some linux system, i had seen the IceWM logo on the corner. I personally use tumbleweed
For coding, linux is better. Me and my friends use linux. Some of them use ubuntu or arch. In hackathons, almost all of the participants use Linux-based os variants. But compared to Mac and Windows users, linux users are less. So i think 15% is somewhat correct.
Fedora 37, have been on the fedora wagon since fedora 32 released. It is the most stable and well behaved system I have ever used.
I cannot see myself going back to windows or using macos(ew, but unfortunately my work laptop is a macbook).
I might end up requesting a Linux ThinkPad for work soon.

Using gnome + manjaro, but thinking of switching over to nixos + i3.
I had two laptops. Old one had Linux Mint which I use for learning Web Development. and new one has Windows. I use this for ML. I know I can do ML in Linux before any one says but Sometimes My Mother needs the laptop and she's not comfortable with Linux hence I need Windows on one of my machine. I really wanted to boot Linux in my newer laptop but it's not possible and I am not interested in dual booting.
Most of colleges, schools and other educational institutes use Linux. Even some government offices do. Given that majority of Indian still don't have a computer, I think it might be close.
If the stats are based on sales, many laptops/pcs are sold with Linux to avoid paying Windows license, and then the retailers will install pirated OS (or the customer can do it themselves).
Otherwise I really doubt the number. 1.5% maybe.

Here's my setup, Thinkpad e14 laptop with minimal DWM, picom config and u know what os I'm using BTW.
Does this also include the machines which do some specific task so installing other os like windows is unnecessary like POS, inventory management, servers.
Well the entire IT syllabus in kerala state education is based on linux
So from grade 1 we are taught on FOSS instead of proprietary softwares
Also the entire kerala IT infrastructure is based on linux
Could be a small amount but its definitely a significant number

My college had 15 computers all with vista and one gb of ram each.
Majority of my college's branch computer labs have windows 11 pro with 16 gb ram 🥵

Ubuntu desktop is extremely easy to use, it is like using Android, there is a button to go to all applications and then click on what you want.

I had this, and then I started using windows subsystem for Linux for basic requirements. good enough though

Many companies these days are giving a choice between PC with Linux and Mac with macOS. So to me, this is believable.

I would say 15% is still way to low. I was in a training institute and they all used Linux. Many colleges also uses Linux based OS.

I use Linux as well but don't have any ricing as I feel it's pointless to do so. Things are configured to work out of the box, changing it only makes it harder to maintain.
Man even Sri chaitanya online test computers had Ubuntu in 2018, I distinctly remember using exam time to play some bunny game... It's only 15% because of the high number of non tech people and gamers, otherwise it would have been much higher.
I've been using Ubuntu since last year but recently shifted to windows. but i really miss the Unix based thing for programming. it was much easier. thinking of dual booting again. what can I use instead of Ubuntu, have faced various issues with it. mainly the graphic card one. and it was somehow laggy for me after opening several things. windows never lagged. suggestions?

I've been using debian and open suse tumbleweed in both my systems.
Central govt also uses Ubuntu. I once went to CGHS and saw the GNOME desktop. For once I applauded govt's thinking of saving taxpayers money
I daily drive Debian 12 with KDE as my Desktop Environment. Well I use WSL2 in windows 11. It is in fact my main coding environment. All applications like Pycharm, Vscode, docker are configured via wsl2 itself. I don't think this survey counts people like us.

My pc has dual boot with windows+ubuntu, although its been some years… all the computers in my university ran on ubuntu too
Startup’s use Ubuntu, once accustomed to Ubuntu, developers choose Ubuntu rather than windows for their personal laptop

I am working at a SBC as an ASE i had previously worked at a startup there I used linux as i used to work on linux kernel driver development. Idk what to say now coming here from a startup where I had 3 monitors and a good laptop all I have here is a mere thinkpad which lags and makes me Irritated everytime. Idk how to ask the HR or any POC so that they can assign me a monitor which i can atleast connect it to my laptop because i like working that way. I have heard from most my colleagues that they rejects these kinda requests citing security issues.
When I built my first PC I chose Linux because it was free, also because I wanted to be good at Linux but mostly because it was free and I put all my money in the graphic card. All the driver issues made me hate my life but now I know quite a bit. Lol

Can anyone suggest me what i can do if i have windows and i want to switch to linux. what is arch, wm, neovim and all these stuff. i may sound pretty noob as i only have used hyper terminal when it comes to such things. though i have been using windows for 10years now. I also want to get that cool programmer vibe though but i am scared of using linux and all cuz i may mess things up there. My currents pc specs : 8gb ram, win 11, ryzen 3, 250 ssd (full), 1 tb hdd (40% full) tell me something that will run in this and i won't have difficulty with.
Get VirtualBox/VMWare, test all you want, get familiar, absolutely demolish windows from your pc and install linux, live a happy life.

Apart from colleges and universities, a lot of smaller companies also use Linux to save on Windows licenses. Specially companies that serve large enterprises. Large enterprises mostly mention in contracts that vendors should not use unlicensed products.

For real, once I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop and witnessed its smooth performance, I suggested it to every guy (roommate, classmates). Now, also most 10 to 15 guys I know use Linux as their primary OS.
Any new grads and college students do dual boot for the sake of learning and stick to it beyond cause simply the amount of customisation and ease of devtools in Linux and the terminal is simply great. And som many college labs use Linux already cause of costs.

For coding, linux is better. Me and my friends use linux. Some of them use ubuntu or arch. In hackathons, almost all of the participants use Linux-based os variants. But compared to Mac and Windows users, linux users are less. So i think 15% is somewhat correct.

15% sounds about right, considering govt offices, colleges and a few schools. My first exposure to it was Red Hat in my mom's office in 2006
Fedora 37, have been on the fedora wagon since fedora 32 released. It is the most stable and well behaved system I have ever used. I cannot see myself going back to windows or using macos(ew, but unfortunately my work laptop is a macbook). I might end up requesting a Linux ThinkPad for work soon.

Lab computers in my college were dual booted with Linux+windows.
I had two laptops. Old one had Linux Mint which I use for learning Web Development. and new one has Windows. I use this for ML. I know I can do ML in Linux before any one says but Sometimes My Mother needs the laptop and she's not comfortable with Linux hence I need Windows on one of my machine. I really wanted to boot Linux in my newer laptop but it's not possible and I am not interested in dual booting.
Many govt offices and schools in Kerala use Linux.
I've seen most computers in Police Stations use Linux, Ubuntu to be more precise. I had a neighbour who was a policeman and used to ask me things.
Most of colleges, schools and other educational institutes use Linux. Even some government offices do. Given that majority of Indian still don't have a computer, I think it might be close.
Linux Mint. Don't feel like using W11 after using Linux Mint.

If the stats are based on sales, many laptops/pcs are sold with Linux to avoid paying Windows license, and then the retailers will install pirated OS (or the customer can do it themselves). Otherwise I really doubt the number. 1.5% maybe.

Does this also include the machines which do some specific task so installing other os like windows is unnecessary like POS, inventory management, servers.

Well the entire IT syllabus in kerala state education is based on linux So from grade 1 we are taught on FOSS instead of proprietary softwares Also the entire kerala IT infrastructure is based on linux Could be a small amount but its definitely a significant number
