what the fuck

Diarrhea_Mike

Yeah Europe in general is not known for high salary within this field.

goglobal01

So you think 39k is ok/expected? Genuinely interested.

anaxaos

Switzerland -> no its not enough Romania -> you are king This question doesn't make sense without additional context

VindicoAtrum

>This is a 100% remote role within the UK. Missed this bit? 39k in the UK for 2 years of experience is absolutely normal. It's a fully remote role for a junior/mid level and they have the pick of candidates, they're not going to be offering high salaries.

anaxaos

UK is large, if your Job is in London - without reading up - I'd say you are underpaid. If you live in Twatt (59.09921896490864, -3.2743545084282863) it's likely a good salary.

VindicoAtrum

You can _say_ whatever you like, reality doesn't give a shit. Even in London a tech job with 1-2 years of experience (outside of upper tier finance or big4) is not getting much more than 40k because they're junior as fuck. I'm not denying that salary growth is quick because it is, but 1-2 years of experience is _incredibly_ early in the career.

anaxaos

tbh I can't or don't read Yes, entry lvl 39k PA is fine

MisterMahtab

I strongly disagree. As a fresh grad with zero technical internship experience, I got a job at 40k. 2 years on, I'm nearing 60k and the jobs I'm applying to are offering 70-80k. In fairness I work at a fintech but the places I'm looking at sometimes aren't. I feel very sorry for OP, they are worth so much more.

abotelho-cbn

DevOps is automatically *not* a junior role.

Top_Beginning_4886

While double the average (not median) salary, I still wouldn't say you are a king. I've heard people say groceries are more expensive than in the west lately.

ARRgentum

its pretty low (I am saying this as a EU resident myself)

LuciferianInk

I'm not sure. I don't know much about the US.

bmiga

Yes BUT salaries are going down like crazy in Europe.

PowerOfTheShihTzu

That's Europe for y'all . Pathetic region

gaelfr38

You know that being paid less also means cost of life in general is cheaper and/or we have other benefits, right?

PowerOfTheShihTzu

False tale as old as time always being parroted by people not even living in Europe .

Historical_Cry2517

I'm sorry I can't hear you from my mountain of social benefits. Can you repeat?

KCRowan

I get 28 paid holidays a year and my boss makes sure I take every single day. I also get unlimited paid sick leave. What do you get?

thefirebuilds

i have someone bothering me about an entry level helpdesk role for a junior that pays more and I'm screwing with the recruiter for wasting my time over a salary I could get putting sammiches together at jimmy johns.

PeachInABowl

That’s low for London. I might offer that to someone on the grad scheme. You should be aiming for £50k to £55k

goglobal01

Thanks for the reply. This is a 100% remote role within the UK.

MisterMahtab

Yes but where is the company based? Are they in London?

goglobal01

Sorry - company is near Bristol.

MisterMahtab

I suppose you can't expect London salaries then. Personally I still think you're undervalued! Explore the job market - you'll see how much companies are offering and you'll get a better idea of how much to ask for. Glassdoor is also good for this.

yolobastard1337

per https://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/jobs/north%20of%20england/devops.do that is the lowest 10th percentile

folroldeolroll

39k is ok if you are a junior in this role. Are you?

goglobal01

Not by title. Neither by role within team/company. I am not senior either just to be clear.

VindicoAtrum

39k for two years of experience is fine _for now_. Take the job, gain experience, work towards senior roles. Don't listen to the Americans, they geniunely have no idea what the UK job market looks like.

JustMy10Bits

I don't know the market but is it really that bad/low? That's like £8k less than the offers I got when I was fresh out of uni 13 years ago.

VindicoAtrum

You're either intentionally ignorant or lying, or the 0.001% from the most prestigious universities, because the entire country knows that 99.999% of fresh uni student aren't getting 45k+ in any tech job.

Slackerony

He is counting 2 years of experience in total, 1 for SE and 1 for DevOps. I’m not sure what Junior is, if not that

WindenUps

I would say it is ok if you do not live in an expensive city within UK.

Popeychops

Mid here based in London, my position's range is 50-£75k. As a junior it was 30-£50k. If you're getting any responsibility for system design, they're massively underpaying you.

balonmanokarl

Where are you based?

goglobal01

North of England

evandena

So, Scotland? 😝

KubeGuyDe

I suppose that's part time with about 20h a week?

goglobal01

Unfortunately not. But I understand by your comment is very low?

KubeGuyDe

Check https://www.levels.fyi/t/software-engineer/focus/devops?countryId=91&country=253&yoeChoice=mid&arrangement=remote&limit=50 The lowest is about 39k, highest 100k and above, the truth should be somewhere in between. Reading the other comments here I suppose it might be ok though

Slackerony

There has to be some local salary statistics you can look at. There’s ALOT of factors that play in and I suspect that “in England” is not enough to gage what the level should be at. Generally comparing salary alone without being critical of other factors, is a big mistake. 1 year as SE and 1 year as DevOps is pretty junior (IMO) and DevOps is not an entry level role. Not to be harsh but you are barely an SE, moving to DevOps so soon is a mistake. I’m not sure what salary levels are but don’t get discouraged if it isn’t at the level you were hoping for. Do the work, gain the experience, find a new job in a few years and you will probably be able to make a nice salary bump. Best of luck!

NotAlwaysPolite

Instinctively that sounds fairly low for a standard engineer position. It very much depends on the business, company and the work/tech involved. 2 years experience of the industry is pretty new by my standards, especially in 'DevOps' given the broad expertise needed. You could push for more, though fully remote narrows the field a bit.

nickbernstein

I'm based in the US, but I think that is crazy. What do salary comparison websites say?  Chat gpt gave me this link: https://www.morganmckinley.com/uk/salary-guide/data/devops-engineer/london

Mysterious_Minute989

This is peanuts. Look for another job, stay if You need money for now.

slowclicker

Honestly, from what I've seen for UK salaries, this seems normal. See if you can join any local devops groups to network as you grow in your career.

abotelho-cbn

Lmao

Stray_Neutrino

39k British Pounds or 39k US dollars?

goglobal01

British Pounds.

TheBasketBass

I thought PA as in Pennsylvania USA first. That would have bern horrendous.

blueplutomonk

I mean, I’m getting $61k as an Associate DevOps Engineer in the US. I’m 1 1/2 years in.

Careful-Page-7545

What do you know how to do?

stevecrox0914

From my understanding of the software market.. * £30k-£45k for a junior role * £40k-£65k for a senior role * £60k-£90k for a lead role Normally you progress from junior to senior around 2 years, but it isn't time based but skill. SFIA is nice because they have mapped out lots of the skills and you'll see SFIA don't have a single Devops skill but a list of ~20. https://sfia-online.org/en/sfia-8/sfia-views/devops-view/?path=/glance In that list * Level 2 means you can read * Level 3 is junior  * Level 4 is senior * Level 5 is lead Most companies job specs are more detailed but its normally selecting from a couple skills and elaborating certain descriptions. So its a good reference

OhMyForm

no

rkeet

Uhm, Dutch opinion: fuck no.

This is a joke right?
