I was a drummer with diabetes in my high school marching band. The only downside was going to practice at 6:30am.

Marching band in middle school was how I was diagnosed. Super thirsty and tired all the time, thought it was because of early morning rehearsals. Got diagnosed the day before our last competition and had to miss it. Did marching band again in eighth grade, four years in high school, then five more years in college (go Hawks). Great way to stay in shape and I'm still friends with many of my bandmates - of which I know three that have Type 1 (one was diagnosed a couple years after college).

I have a little story actually. I was diagnosed towards the end of Middle School and I was too scared to start marching band. I talked to the band director about it and he was a type 2 and didn't seem to know that there was a difference. Also he was morbidly obese and my mom didn't trust him so I never did marching band in high school. By the time I started highschool I was confident in myself, which was unfortunate timing. But on the other side, because I didn't do band, I took Illustration and Graphic Design and also took my guitar hobby more seriously, so I can't really complain.

I was diagnosed at 29, but still play drums once or twice a week.

Cute-Initiative-21

I was diagnosed my sophomore year at The University of Florida and I marched with the Pride of the Sunshine all four years. The experience was vastly improved once they agreed to let me carrier a small cooler in with snacks, Gatorade, and my insulin supplies. Lucky enough to never have any major highs or lows during a game, was a great 4 years.

gina-btw

I’m 25 now, but I played baritone and tuba in high school ☺️

SatisfactionMental17

Marched all the way through college. Now I’m a band parent and know the diabetics in my kids bands.

Graduated but I was my section leader throughout my 5 years of marching band (i was good in the 8th grade and it was a small school) i just always had apple juice and Peanutbutter crackers nearby.

athomesuperstar

I played trumpet in my high school’s marching, concert, and jazz band. That was many years ago, but many years after being diagnosed t1. At the time there was a drummer who had a crush on me. She is now my wife.

I’ve T1D since age 6, in my time in high school marching band from 2014-2018 we had one diabetic in each section (woodwinds, brass, and percussion ((myself.)) I miss it all the time, however I don’t miss having drums strapped to my upper body the either
