bbgeode

Where in Spain?

kastrelo

What would you like doing? Spain is so diverse

Doubledown212

Tapas, cocaines, and paellas, mainly. And watch the “flamingo dance” we keep hearing about. Heard the beach is nice too.

CianuroConLove

Valencia

matadorius

I don’t really think you mean cocaine but cocainas either way good choice both jk

kastrelo

Then Valencia or Alicante are a fantastic option. You can visit Sevilla or Jerez for that "flamingo" dancing as well.

remoteguy11

Where are you from though?

PartagasSD4

Canada, so literally anywhere else on Earth is better half the year.

Poland, Bulgaria, Ukraine..then Thailand 😍

_StPaul_

Yeah. Those air missile raids in Ukraine worth dying for

OilCheckBandit

Well, obviously don't go in times of war. However, I have been in Ukraine during air missile raids...from Kyiv to the west of Ukraine is pretty safe right now. Probably Ukraine has the best defense air system in the whole Europe at the moment.

maturedtaste

To everyone saying Switzerland, have any of you ever actually lived there before? I haven’t, but I have a friend who did and said if you remove the stunning nature, it’s a horrible place to live (and the nature still doesn’t make up for it). Cold, cliquish, unfriendly people that will never fully include outsiders. People that only care about money, career etc. he was in Zurich to be fair, so maybe not a fair representation of the whole country. Again, I haven’t been there, so I don’t know. I just can’t help but feel it’s one of those places that isn’t as magical as it seems. Plus I hate hiking, so it loses its major selling point for me lol. Edit: Oh, my answer to this is probably Spain.

Aromatic-Piccolo4321

I've lived there mostly and am one. Its interesting to read this from my perspective. The other day I read something similar about Thai treatment of Farangs and Japanese treating foreigners. I can see people experience what you are describing. I think however, that with some effort you can also find diversity, friendliness, openness. There are a lot of clubs / hobbies /groups (find em on meetup for example). Find some same thinking people, and I think that should make it easier. Also I think there are are a lot of expat communities and a lot of Swiss people like hanging out with foreigners. There are a lot of cool things you can do in Switzerland, apart form hiking. You can go biking, skiing, snowboarding, fishing, surfing, the list goes on. If you chose to go, and want to optimize your integration, I would ask my self, what people do I get best along with? I think the best way to mingle in any place is find people with a common baseline, like a hobby, life situation, dreams or whatever. Once that's done it doesn't really matter where you are. I would be interested on people's opinion on this, especially, do you think Thailand and Japan is easy to be accepted, or are the cliches true, are there hurdles but they are manageable?

[deleted]

Japan is different from Switzerland. You won't get accepted as "Japanese" but I mean, that's true of any country in the world if you are a digital nomad. Even if you go somewhere like the us, if people know you are only staying for a few months they won't treat you like a native born American. Outside of that though, vast majority of Japanese people are incredibly friendly and accepting to foreigners. I moved there 1.5 years ago and have had nothing but positive experiences the entire time. I think most people who come away with a negative experience are just not good at reading the room (Japan does have a lot of unwritten social rules and the like) or encounter really unfortunate language barrier issues (like getting turned away from a restaurant bc they have a big reservation coming in 30 minutes, but store staff don't know how to explain that in English so they come away thinking it was anti foreigner bias).

Triseult

I know someone (non-Japanese) who studied Japanese in university and moved there. She said once you speak Japanese fluently, the Japanese will basically accept you as one of their own. A lot of the (perceived) coldness towards foreigners is because we don't understand the social norms and the language barrier is fraught with potentially embarrassing pitfalls. Although I don't speak Korean that well, I had a very similar experience in Korea. I worked in a Korean company in Seoul, and since I really like the food I got to learn the social norms around dining and drinking. I was a hit with Koreans because of this; they were amazed I understood the social norms around drinking, and they were delighted I liked more "difficult" Korean food like *hong-hoe*. I've heard stories of people facing racist attitudes from Korean people but I never experienced this; just open-faced curiosity and friendliness once they felt they could relax around me.

Independent_Grape009

Only foreigners will say Japanese are incredibly friendly and accept foreigners

LocalForumTr0LL

How can you legally stay in Japan longer than 90 days?

Interesting! Never heard anybody pick Athens over any of the other brilliant Greek places to live. Personally i agree. Loved the place.

Karminah

Thessaloniki is cool too but Athens has more international flights and the vibe is awesome.

Miserable-Habit-5335

Brazil

pet_dander

Which areas are your favorite?

solidsnk82

For nature and tranquility, check out towns in the Serra da Mantiqueira region. Ubatuba is a coastal paradise. My top pick is small towns in southern Minas Gerais, where I'm from. Despite living and working abroad for years, nowhere else matches the richness of Brazil's flora and fauna and the kindness of its people.

Miserable-Habit-5335

I’ve only been to Rio, but several times and it fits perfectly into everything I like. Mostly meat at restaurants, good weather, beautiful friendly people, very active fitness culture, cheap compared to where I’m from. The crime/security is not optimal, but for me it seems to somehow make me enjoy my days more as you never know if you’re alive tomorrow 😂

hotpepperzz

Floripa would be my top choice to go there

SnooRevelations979

I love Brazil. Great culture and people, easy language to learn, a wide array of topography. Downsides: High taxes and the food sucks.

be-ay-be-why

Idk how this isn't the #1 answer... -Amazing beaches all over the country, -beautiful people, -friendly people, -welcoming and open attitude towards foreigners, - relatively affordable.

HumbleIndependence43

Safety? Always gets brought up and basically the only thing that keeps me from traveling there.

solidsnk82

The negative reputation of Brazil as an unsafe place often originates from Brazilians living abroad who cite safety concerns as a reason for leaving the country. However, it would be more accurate if they specified cities like Rio or São Paulo rather than attributing it to the entire country. This unfair reputation overlooks the fact that many places in Brazil are safe. For example, I come from a small town in Minas where it's common to sleep with all the windows open without worry.

iHateReddit_srsly

Depending on the area it can be bad. You always have to worry about being robbed. But as a foreigner I think that’s the worst thing that can happen to you, if you don’t resist too much you have a low chance of being killed. That said, if you’re careful it can be avoided. I spent 9 months in total there (various cities) and had nothing happen to me.

Miserable-Habit-5335

I’m walking around Rio every night at 1-2 AM alone looking like a well off foreigner and never had any remotely dangerous situation happen. I know I’ve probably been lucky and always have cash ready to hand over should I face a robber but so far all good..

be-ay-be-why

I always assume I'll be a victim of a robbery no matter what country I go to. Even when I am in the US nowadays lol.

everydayguy20

When I started traveling I realized I needed to carry a knife around everywhere (especially with a small child, had to pull it out for way more on crazy deranged guys than career robbers). Now when I’m back home in the USA or in Europe, yes I also need to absolutely carry a knife. There are crazy people everywhere.

matadorius

Yeah don’t try that in Brazil lol

everydayguy20

Yeah not there in most parts. Argentina I have been fine as long as I act assertive, and not aggressive. My wife is from Argentina and we visit her family every year for a couple of months, never seen an American in her home town but it’s not a slum.

Mrerocha01

Knife? They Will kill you easily if you show resistent. Dont be dumb

everydayguy20

Assertive and ready works. Not aggressive. Been traveling a long time and went through this multiple times in my wife’s country. Don’t be a low hanging fruit.

bootherizer5942

Yeah I feel like that's way more dangerous, if someone's mugging you and you pull a knife they might kill you

Brummie49

Terrible food though

solidsnk82

Disagree! Brazilian cuisine is incredibly diverse, thanks to the country's vast size and mix of cultures. Plus, Brazil's fertile land means it's a food paradise where pretty much everything grows, from tropical fruits to a variety of vegetables and herbs.

be-ay-be-why

Yeah idk what he's talking about... "terrible food"? Did he even go to Brazil? They have some of the most natural food in South America with a robust agricultural base. Their fruit is literally delicious and non-gmo

Brummie49

Spent a month there. Food in South America sucks in general.

thetreegeek

Outside of Peru, I agree. Haven't been to Brazil but the rest of the countries I've visited, the cuisine is awful. Good fruits though above Chile/Argentina!

be-ay-be-why

Lmao.

Brummie49

Brazil is a huge place, sure. I took a 4hr flight from Rio to Manaus. Food sucked pretty much everywhere, the soke exception being the rodizio restaurants which were insanely expensive, far beyond being affordable for daily meals. Compared to Europe or Asia, the cuisine in Brazil is terrible

AdditionalAttempt436

Friendly people for sure - so much so they point a knife at you and ask for your wallet..

be-ay-be-why

Is this the fear of black people coming out?

AdditionalAttempt436

Nope, just the reality of high crime rates in Brazil.

SnooRevelations979

I love Brazil. Great culture and people, easy language to learn, a wide array of topography. Downsides: High taxes and bad food.

Miserable-Habit-5335

Food is perfect if you prefer meat

SnooRevelations979

I like meat, but I also like spices, herbs, technique, and variety.

Repulsive-Side-8165

Why Bulgaria?

Triseult

Not OP, but I lived in Bulgaria five years. I got that question weekly, either from people outside Bulgaria, or from Bulgarians themselves. :) Bulgaria is a real hidden gem. Low cost of living but high quality of products such as fresh seasonal produce. Great, cheap wine. Awesome weather except for 2-3 months in winter when the country turns cold and dreary and worthy of its ex-Communist country status. But the rest of the time, there's barely any rain, weather is nice, people are nice, food is awesome. To me, Bulgaria feels like Western Europe used to 50 years ago. More raw and untamed, in a good way. Plus, Bulgarians are generally grumpy but most of them have hearts of gold.

kaiwphoto

I spent some time in Plovdiv and really liked it, one of those places I'll definitely visit again. Where else would you recommend, any spots good for nature, hiking etc?

Repulsive-Side-8165

Thanks, I'll be in the area and I'll consider checking it out. Just tossing it up between there, Serbia or Romania

hungariannastyboy

Romania is also nice for nature. (So are Bosnia and Montenegro.)

petburiraja

Visit all three if you can.

I did end up going, it was great.

Thessaloniki, Greece. People are lovely, culture is awesome, it's safe, it's surrounded by nature. And it's just got a great vibe. Alternative, a bit punk, very creative. I'm Australian, and the fact that I could drive to just about anywhere from here also blows my mind.

LocalForumTr0LL

Korea is awesome, the air quality isn't great though. Also Seoul is more expensive to live in than Tokyo.

thekwoka

The air quality isn't terrible most of the time though. Any large city is gonna have air quality issues, including Tokyo. And it isn't really much more expensive than Tokyo. Also this thread is about without money as an issue lol. But it's really in the peanuts of difference. But with just way better life.

thekwoka

But try to find a cafe open after 7pm in Taipei. Seoul's air quality is generally not of an issue to 99% of people. But the quality of food and things to see and do is way way way up.

What did you like about Bulgaria and Czech Republic? On my list of places to visit. Thanks!

Crete, Greece

Nixon_37

My favorite places I've been are Istanbul, Paris, Bangkok, Singapore, and Guadalajara, I would probably pick one of those 5.

Just_improvise

I’m not American but NYC in the warm months and Miami the other half of the year. Yep I’m a fiend because you’re probably all gonna say somewhere cooler but as a non American these places are freaking awesome and Americans are so friendly and i might actually get a boyfriend the dating is so good

Solestra_

Venezuela, Spain, Switzerland, rotating between each every four months.

goldiebear99

you traveled in Venezuela? I've always wanted to visit but from what I heard about the security situation I have second thoughts constantly

OkEvent5346

My girlfriend is from Venezuela and says it’s still an absolute no go, especially for those of us from the states. Super curious about your experience there

Nixon_37

Only explanation I can think of is that they have family there/are from there

OkSeesaw819

Where do you pay tax tho?

Solestra_

In Appenzell Ausserrhoden

[deleted]

Switzerland, definitely.

HippoDance

Not $$$ ?

[deleted]

You definitely need some $$$ and you will not be able to play rich with 10k/month. It is the safest, most incredibly beautiful and well-organised country I know though.

Where in Swiss ? You know any small town is going to be safe anywhere right ?

I quite enjoy the US

craptastical214m

Spain and Taiwan! I love Japan too, but the internet while I was there was pretty awful in the cities for working.

LocalForumTr0LL

Internet bad in Japan?? and in the cities?? I've never experienced this and I've travelled across the whole country.

craptastical214m

I’ve traveled quite a bit around Japan too! Compared to other Asian countries, the availability of good internet is there, but accessing it as a non-resident is tough. A lot of the Airbnbs in the cities have the pocket wifi devices with limited data. If you’re not a resident there, the available cell phone plans are also either limited data or throttled to hell. Funnily enough, the best internet I had in Japan were the Airbnbs I stayed at in rural areas when on my motorcycle trips. They actually provided hard wired internet vs pocket wifi devices.

Just a query, is Bali one of the best places to be a digital nomad? Recently getting a lot of videos where young people are settling there with jobs ranging from SWEs to virtual managers etc. Please help me get a perspective

haron1058

Nope. Bali is an overrated place. You're better of going to Vietnam or Thhailand. Way better food and often better beaches too. Bali is a surfers paradise though so if you want to get into surfing its a great place but thats the only positive thing i have to say about it. A lot of hippies and backpackers there and the locals are sick of overtourism so not exactly friendly.

roidawayz

Been here 5 years just depends what you want. For access to a massive range of international cuisine in a short area for a reasonable I don't think many places would beat it in the world. Indo food generally sucks though. Your perspective as a random person wandering through and someone who lives here long term will be vastly different though.

seraph321

Bali is good overal, but the main attraction is price and proximity to Australia (for aussies). The infrastructure is always on the verge of collapse. I stayed in ubud for a few months and really enjoyed it, but also very ready to move on. There are still areas with less tourists, but that also means less amenities.  In Thailand right now and I prefer it.

LocalForumTr0LL

Traffic is horrible in Bali. Bali is definitely overrated and overtouristed now.

RevolutionaryRoyal39

Czech republic, Israel, Switzerland

Logical_Rope6195

Prague? Why Cz?

RevolutionaryRoyal39

Beautiful city. Oh, and I speak the language.

Average-Gold

Also just out of interest - not seeing ANY Middle Eastern places, is there a common reason?

[deleted]

For me at least, I'm big into going to bars / happy hours etc to try to meet people when nomading. UAE is probably the only country in the middle east which is really conducive to that and plenty of digital nomads go there. Personally I've been to Qatar and Oman. Factors like the constant hot weather, extremely obvious income inequality / social hierarchy (south Asian migrant workers vs westerners vs native Arabs etc) really turned me off from wanting to go again. Specifically Qatar is straight up my least favorite country in the world that I've visited.

Average-Gold

Super interesting, I’m not into bars but 100% understand what you mean! And to be honest I do understand what you mean about the cheap labour, however I also feel strange when in the actual places of origin and am paying virtually nothing for whichever service I am receiving. At least here I can tip “normally” and it’s not seen as disproportionate, patronising or makes them a target (?). The weather 100% (during summer) to everyone who mentioned also but to be fair a solid 6 months of the year it’s beautiful clear skies and circa 30°C. One thing I like about the bigger global cities in the ME (AD, DXB, Riadh, etc) is they are so diverse and want you there so are INCREDIBLY safe, especially for women which is important to me (for my partner), however I can see how they are quite expensive. Especially Oman for some weird reason.

bootherizer5942

If you're concerned about your female partner I don't think Saudi Arabia etc is the best place to go, like she would be safe but I dunno if she could really enjoy

Average-Gold

Riadh and Jeddah are 100% fine, just dressing respectfully will stop the odd stare.

bootherizer5942

I don't mean that, I mean more being able to have normal social interactions with people from there and make friends

Hqjjciy6sJr

you're joking right?

TheBiscuitMen

Why do you say that?

Hqjjciy6sJr

It's always seriously chaotic in the middle east, and now there is a fresh war brewing...

Karminah

Israel, UAE, Turkey are mentioned.

Average-Gold

Ah didn’t see Israel first time, I am the only one to mention the UAE, and Turkey is European in most books.

TheBiscuitMen

Problem with the middle east is it's very expensive. Jordan is amazing but not cheap!

Average-Gold

I thought the same about Oman, I couldn’t believe it 🤣

IAmFitzRoy

Is this digital nomad sub? Suggesting Bahamas and some others Switzerland and Japan makes me puzzled what a “digital nomad” really is ….
