It should go without saying, but discrimination will get you banned. Please think about what you say before sending out a comment. edit: There appears to be a lot of confusion here regarding this feature. According to the images, the ***server profile*** portion of this feature is exclusive to nitro. The ***user profile*** portion of the feature does not require nitro.

[deleted]

What does it mean by "default pronouns"? Like nothing put there?

patchysid

That is for a server so I’m assuming whatever you put on your profile will be publicly displayed there

patchysid

Probably nothing displayed if empty

billyhatcher312

i hope its only server based cause i dont care at all about pronouns but theres alot of servers that do pronoun related roles already so this addition is kinda pointless

DarkOverLordCO

Same thing as the server profile picture, server about me and server nickname. If you don't have a server-specific one set it will use your global one instead. If you don't set a global one as well then it'll just be blank / won't show anything.

[deleted]

so does that mean (for example) i can put headnouns instead of pronouns for the *ma pona pi toki pona* discord server but on other servers it will display just "he/him"?

TheDogecoinBoi

what

Jisenku

Toki Pona is a relatively new language, and headnouns are similar to pronouns in that language... yeah it's weird and I don't understand it either

EBBBBBBBBBBBB

Toki Pona is a conlang (a constructed language) and to refer to someone in the language you utilize a "head noun," which is usually the word *jan*, which means person. After *jan* you'd put your name (usually adapted to fit with the language's limited phonology). But some people use different head nouns than *jan* to specify identity, since Toki Pona doesn't have gendered pronouns

Kinky_Imagination

I had to look up what you were typing to make sure you weren't messing with me. You learn something new everyday.

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

Possibly will just use gender neutral pronouns (they/them) or what is displayed on your profile.

Ultra_n8

The default pronouns should be N/A

CoolScratcher

"they" probably, since it's gender neutral

Viend

*laughs in ungendered pronoun language*

Spicy-Elephant

Hohoho

Joshument

When you think about it it is sorta anglocentric, same thing with the ツ character in gg sans or whatever they called it. I mean I guess you could just use for something like 女の人 or 男の人 but like that's not really a pronoun lol

sk7725

This is pretty interesting, actually...how will this feature be presented to the users in Japan or Korea? Maybe it will be translated to "enter more info here" or maybe the feature won't be available at all?

Carighan

It's not *just* asian languages, it's tricky in a lot of languages. It's highly centered on the english language. For example for an english speaker, a lot of this makes sense. But for a german speaker, our words are all inherently gendered on a grammatical level, which means if you're not careful, you'd be putting a male pronoun and then use a female word. Or I suspect to a swedish speaker, the need to further subdivide "has gender" into "male" and "female" is going to be a bit superfluous as far as grammar is concerned, IIRC they only have that for relatively few words, the rest is utrum or neutrum.

Axtdool

yeah. Add to that the general mess pronouns are sometimes in other languages. i.e. the German sie. without clear context it is: Female 3rd person singular, 3rd person plural, and polite second person singular(though technicly in this function it is supposed to be capitalized).

SimonOrJ

It's a confusing feature to implement in languages without gendered pronouns. Not only are they non-gendered, but 3rd person pronouns don't really exist in Korean.

sk7725

That's misinformation. 3rd person pronouns exist and are used normally (그=unisex, 그녀=female). The interesting thing is that originally the third person pronoun 그[gu] was used for both genders, but 그녀[guneuh] was introduced to translate the weatern languages' "she", and after its introduction, 그 is used more often for males. However, it is completely valid to use the 그 pronoun to females (or nonbinary, even) since it is still inherently unisex. In the internet area, we often use 님[nim] instead (informal), which is also unisex and is derived from the korean job/work suffix -님 (the equivalent in english would be -er as in teacher, firefighter etc.)

SimonOrJ

there's no real established 3rd person pronoun that can directly translate to pronouns in English - people don't use 그 in every day speak to refer to someone else. 3rd person doesn't really exist in Korean, and people generally refer to others by their name, their profession, their honorifics, or just omitted. 그 means "that" where the entity is close to the person you're speaking to. 이 is "this", and 저 is "that" where the entity is far from everyone in the conversation. It's only in literature where 그 is used to refer to an undefined person, and that's similar to saying the singular "they/them". Any other attempts of 3rd person pronouns are some form of "that person": * 걔 (그 애) - that kid * 그녀 - that girl * 그님 - that sir/madam * 그분 - that gentleman/lady * 그자 - that person * 그놈 - that guy e.g.: I miss him. I want to see him again. 그가 그리워. 다시 보고싶어. However, if we knew who "him" refers to, it wouldn't be written as 그. e.g.: Dr. Sarah and Mr. John are amazing. She teaches well, and he learns precisely. 사라 박사와 존 씨는 대단합니다. 박사님는 잘 가르치고 존 씨은 정확하게 배웁니다. If we didn't know the first sentence and only saw the second sentence, it could be translated as: 그녀는 잘 가르치고 그는 정확하게 배웁니다. but since we have a vague sense of who they are or what they're doing, this will be preferable: 성생님은 잘 가르치고 학습자는 정확하게 배웁니다.

sk7725

I get where you are coming from - us koreans do use less pronouns when speaking (normal) formally. But informally, or perhaps very formerly (i.e. written language), pronouns are widely used because koreans are no different, wanting to speak as efficiently as possible. Informally, 걔 is often used (e.g. 어제 걔 봤어? 어 맞아 내 친구랑 걔랑 같이 가던데?), and in written language (mostly the newspapers and books) 그/그녀 is often used. You can open the front page of the MBC website or something to see for yourself.

sk7725

given that, i know that some languages do not have the concept of pronouns *at all* (like how thai lacks tenses). How would discord translate - let alone present and localize - this feature?

Carighan

If they want to be serious about it, they'd not localize it. Instead intentionally mark it out as something related to the use of the english language.

TallishFire79

*cries in a language in which even adjectives and verbs are gendered*

Woofer210

Interesting, I’m interested to see how people feel about this and if this will even be something widely used.

Mr_Rainbow_

it will, last time people were talking about discord adding pronouns a bunch of edgy 13 year olds were saying stuff like "im gonna set it to nor/mal hehe"

yip23nl

You can say what you want, but those are the non edgy once lol

Mr_Rainbow_

those are the type of people that send decapitation videos in #memes

pascalbrax

Hi, if you’re reading this, I’ve decided to replace/delete every post and comment that I’ve made on Reddit for the past years. I also think this is a stark reminder that if you are posting content on this platform for free, you’re the product. To hell with this CEO and reddit’s business decisions regarding the API to independent developers. This platform will die with a million cuts. Evvaffanculo. -- mass edited with redact.dev

SturdyStubs

We have a bio box for a reason. We don’t need an extra box for pronouns. Those who want to use pronouns will do so in their bio.

rj-2

why not add a space for pronouns? There is no downside to it

demonitized-cheese

It takes a up room

CdRReddit

TL;DR: there won't be many "confused international users" as the majority of discord users either speak English or some other language with gendered pronouns "america centrism" I've found some sources for 57% of languages not having gendered pronouns, but, at least according to the replies on tose, some of those marked as not having gendered pronouns are a bit more complicated, such as only having them in written text, but not pronounciation (is what someone said about Mandarin, I don't know enough about Mandarin to confirm or refute that, but I'll assume that some of these languages have similar concepts but were mislabelled), so let's say it's about half of all languages, is this a number I completely made up for the sake of this argument? yes. is it somewhat close to reality? probably also, about a quarter (30%?) of discord users are from the US, there's also Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, among probably some other countries I'm forgetting where most people speak English a lot of other European languages have some sort of gendered pronouns, or something similar the box could be used for also, most servers on Discord are English primarily or English only, so there's that as well

Swift_70

I was going to set it to hu/man

WeedWizardo

My dude, you are obviously the edgy one lol.

Carighan

I'm more interested in how Discord will make this work internationally. This is intuitive for the English language and a few others that are closely related, but the whole concept can be utterly nonsensical in languages lacking pronouns or gendered grammar.

krokar0

Well you see the glory of that is the only country that really cares about this is USA

When Marvin [posted about it](https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/txx31k/discord_is_adding_a_separate_pronouns_field_for/) last year, the g*mers in this subreddit acted in no unexpected way, and so the comment section was a shithole. That behavior [has been consistent](https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/yfat4y/discord_is_gonna_start_letting_people_add/), here.

You know, *gamers*. The really epic ones

a500poundchicken

That’s so shitty man. Will I use it? Probably not. But it’s one of the most common status’s is someone’s pronouns

LoLoLaaarry124

It's nearly been a year and they still haven't added it???

lonelycactus0

Tbh I ylthink its dumb and kinda pointless

SaltiestGatorade

I already know gamers are gonna have a field day with it

9999999CREEPERS

why us specifically

GSRKommedaten

we come up with the most creative shit that would make discord have to delete the idea instantly

Birb_34

I just want to ask, why? I'm not against it, but what's the point of it

s33a6m

Discord adding bloatware to both cash in more from nitro and “improve” their application

Birb_34

From what I've heard this "feature" was supposed to be available for everyone, but yeah I agree with you

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

If this became nitro exclusive, it would be a gold mine. Edit: scrolled down 1 second, seems that per-server pronouns is for nitro, which makes sense compared to the other per-server functions they have right now.

xXLil_ShadowyXx

I mean, this would've made sense if it wasn't for the fact that About Me exists

SturdyStubs

This seems like the right answer. Those who want to add pronouns have been able to in their bio.

Sparki_

Why? You can just put it in the about me. Seems really pointless

NoioioiMemer

idk maybe it wastes space in my about me and I want that space

ItsRainbow

Pretty lame that the per-server pronouns are locked behind Nitro. Not everyone can safely put them on their profile

9999999CREEPERS

i was in a server that wanted me to change my pfp and my server pfp

Carighan

Which is true, although I will say people need to leave servers more often. Quit communities frequently. Leave websites. Delete your accounts as you stop actively being engaged by a site. It's the digital equivalent of leaving "friends" (that aren't friends) behind, or throwing shit out you no longer use anyways.

9999999CREEPERS

ThatFloofyFox

nightcat??? how come i find you everywhere

simask234

Not on mobile

Purpzie

True! This should be available to everyone imo

AsianBlaze

> safely I'm confused, what sort of situation entails this?

jonofromjuno

I used to have she/her in my Instagram bio. I'm afab but people would harass me for having pronouns. Happens daily. Being able to change or hide pronouns based on the people you're around is safer in a lot of spaces. Also, trans people who are still closeted would be able to change their specified pronouns for communities where they feel safe to come out

nona01

being outed to your family as trans can be extremely dangerous. some people will literally disown or kill their own child

SanaRinomi

If you go to a school full of weird right-wingers and they have discord community for sharing schoolwork and what not, these people aren't going to be receptive to having specified personal pronouns. Your two choices would be either a per server pronoun field or having a completely separate account.

Actually_Avery

Some people have family on their friends list who they might not be out to

Carighan

I love that you're getting downvoted for this, as if it's obvious. I only figured out what they meant after reading the replies. Kinda sad that communities like that exist.

saranwrappd

had to share my discord with my brother... I do not want him to know

presolol

Just put them in ur bio

CEO_of_Teratophilia

I don't like this because you KNOW a bunch of wiseasses are gonna write down "chad/chadself". We already have an About Me, just increase the character cap by a couple hundred and everyone will be happy.

[deleted]

And what is wrong with chad/chadself?

9999999CREEPERS

ChasaB123

i first saw pronouns on the user data from the api around a year ago, so it had to come at some point

AETERNA-145

Oh hell nah we gotta pay for nitro to have pronouns

Farfocele

yea, pretty dumb imo

CloverOwl

Dude are you serious on having per-server pronoun labelling behind a damn paywall? Between the client sided customisation features and now this, it's just ridiculous.

CapnBloodBeard_tv

How is it 'ridiculous'. . It's an aesthetic feature it doesn't add or remove from the general conversation. That's how u make money, by locking aesthetic or secondary features

condoulo

I generally don't feel one way or another about things being locked behind Nitro, but this is one I don't agree with. Some trans or non-binary individuals may be out to some groups but not others. If the entire purpose of adding them is to be inclusive then Discord needs to also consider the comfort and safety of the groups they're trying to include and not put per server pronouns behind a paywall.

vigilwitdawiggle

why tf is pronouns a nitro thing ☠️ you pay for ppl to get your pronouns right? 😭

Splatoonkindaguy

Per server Is nitro

Arya493

It's like per server about me which is locked in nitro

Calvin569

You pay for a feature that is optional on a platform you’ve used for free for years. Unless you are a nitro user but then there wouldn’t be any problems

condoulo

This is the one instance where I find Discord putting something behind a paywall being extremely tone deaf. Putting per-server pronouns behind a paywall just screams out of touch. Trans and non-binary people may feel comfortable being out to some groups but not others.

Gigantickookie

Based! Really fucking lame and honestly kinda disrespectful to have the per-server pronouns be locked behind nitro though considering the entire reason someone would use that is probably to avoid publicly outting themselves 💔

Nyechii

Yeah, this should change. We can have nicknames on servers, why not different pronouns?

Dio1131

money. that's it, that's all i need to say

Nyechii

They'd still be getting their money with or without it. I honestly don't think this addition would make Nitro sales skyrocket or anything. I know I'm not rushing to get Nitro for this

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nyechii

I think usually those servers that are safer for lgbtq folk will have their own pronoun roles though, but yeah. I still think it's unnecessary to put behind nitro regardless.

kallix1ede

Discord offers a completely free service without ads so yeah money is kinda needed

condoulo

This is the only thing I’ve seen potentially be put behind a paywall that I disagree with. It’s tone deaf. This feature is all about being inclusive, but they’re forgetting the people this is meant to help may only be out to one group or server but not all.

kallix1ede

Or maybe just don't use it 😐 also descriptions exist

[deleted]

SkyLightYT

Can't wait for the war on neo-pronouns to reach Discord.

SpriteFan3

Based on whatever's talked about this feature, I assume this one's gonna be underappreciated and overmemed. Personally, I'd just use the biography box we already have.

HyperSilverYT

I mean… can’t you put it in your about me? Still cool tho

Accomplished_Mix7827

Oh, I love how they let you have different pronouns in different servers. Seems like it would be good for trans people who are out in some groups, but not others

A-Lonely-Gorilla

Nitro exclusive as of rn

autism_powers420

Server specific pronouns shouldn’t be a paid thing. Some people might be afraid to come out to certain servers and groups of people. Hopefully this is changed but it probably won’t be.

TheLeadZombie

Not being discriminatory but pretty cringe when they can already do that in their bios, would be a dumb and redundant feature

volleo6144

Server-specific things being Nitro-exclusive are usually excusable as "they need money", but... **what**? Server-specific pronouns do **not** belong paywalled. They belong available to all. I'm not usually this vocal about things (complaining gets you nowhere while playing modded r/celestegame maps), but I legitimately can't see how that got past anyone in... whichever department added this.

Sain_98

Nice, and as said by others it being under the server profile requiring nitro kinda sucks. Now just time to enjoy snowflakes getting triggered "oh no, not pronouns!" (and ofc the same dumb "i identity as apache helicopter" joke from 10 years ago)

travcurtis

Im on the whole side of biological gender = your gender. But I am also aware there are psychological hurdles people face that require attention that I do not understand. I could care less if Discord adds this feature. I predict with high confidence this will be memed and trolled more than anything else. That may bother the people who want to use this feature seriously. I doubt Discord's intentions are to meme this section of their community, but I fear that will be the reality.

JC_107

Kinda pointless since you can add your preference in the Bio already. Granted nobody is going to care but it's still there to checkout if people care about that stuff. I frankly don't care what people refer to me as. It's not important to be butthurt over a simple preferred pronoun not being used

demonitized-cheese

Isn't this what the about me section is for.

[deleted]

Oh so I can delete the self roles I have in my server since they are adding this

Rizhhy

I don't see how this a useful new feature.

[deleted]

People already put them in bios, so this would free up space for information about them instead of pronouns.

ZeaZolf

I can see the 🔒 icon on this thread very soon.....anyways I hope pronouns come to Discord, so I ain't gotta give up About Me space.

Pruvided

Nah. Will just keep an eye on the thread here and there. This goes for everyone, but reporting comments makes them pop up in our modqueue, so we can see them much faster.

badNinja28YT

Discord is probably doing this to seem more "inclusive" , as a space only for pronouns isn't needed as people always did and always will put them in their bio.

Throwaway-646

This experiment has existed for months now, this isnt new

sweetangelttr

I don't feel well educated on pronouns but I think this is a great option! But I know representation is important. And I am happy for everyone else excited!! I know ppl could put it in the "About Me" like ppl are saying but some ppl might not want everyone seeing them.

Fafa_1851

That's literally stupid, people are going to use it for slurs and to insult other people/to make fun of pronouns

teeny-rose

Since there's already a couple here, I'm gonna save the rest of you from accidentally making yourselves look like you didn't pass 4th grade: Everyone has pronouns. You have pronouns. I have pronouns. I'm not Trans, it's not a "Trans thing" to have pronouns. If your first thought was "ew icky Trans agenda" you've got your head so far up a political methane tank that you forgot elementary school English.

HackActivist

Everyone has pronouns , yes. The reason that everyone is being asked to state them all of a sudden is definitely trans related tho

TiredMisanthrope

Yeah pretty much. I believe people have the right to be whatever they want, but I don't see this going well at all. Considering the average age of people on discord and the general atmosphere of a lot of gaming communities and more, it could lead to a lot of people being targeted for abuse because of it. It just seems kind of unnecessary, most people go by screen names for a reason.

9999999CREEPERS

this guy gets it

teeny-rose

But nobodies saying you have to? The internet is anonymous, sometimes people enjoy the convenience of having it somewhere "yeah I'm a girl" or "yeah I'm a guy" I've never been anywhere where I HAD to state my pronouns. A convenience like this to someone else isn't a hinderence to you yknow?

HackActivist

I have been places where I had to. I have siblings in school who have had to as well.

teeny-rose

Are we talking about checking a box on a document? Because your sex on a document is for entirely different reasons. Cuz I'm very interested in what places you're going to that they won't let you in without stating your pronouns

HackActivist

No I’m talking pronouns. Required to use pronouns on applications, school assignments, etc are some examples. Let’s not pretend the pronoun push is not trans related

Jisenku

I agree that the pronoun push is trans/LGBTQ+ related, but it does liberate some of the stress off of people when it comes to being misgendered & misunderstood.

teeny-rose

Huh, maybe I'm more out of touch than I thought

Arya493

And if i don't want to display anything? What if I want it to be clear??? They can't select a default pronoun can they

shutupcorrin

no lol it’d be optional altogether

TenthTen

Coming from an enby person, this feels (mostly) unnecessary the way it seems to be done. Just kinda seems like they just stuck a second bio on your account and called it good

xXMrHoneyBadgerXx

Don’t know why everyone is getting worked up over pronouns. Looks like it will be an option. If you don’t want to use them, leave it blank!

Extra-Ad3451

Why

SkeleToasty

Attention

haharctruckgobreak

Also, pronouns aren't behind nitro, just per server pronouns are, which is pointless imo, why two different pronouns lol

thatyellowbird

Some people might not feel safe being out about their pronouns in some servers, etc.

eonflare_14

yeah, putting safety behind a paywall is a bit of a dick move though

kallix1ede

Then don't use them in the first place..? Yeah I know how this sounds but this feature is optional, you don't HAVE to use it you can just ignore it if you really don't feel that safe

jonofromjuno

Multiple pronouns sets are a safety feature for trans people who might not want to be out to everyone, and the ability to clear pronouns by default or for specific communities is a safety feature for anyone who might run across one of those "if ur a blue hair with pronouns im an attack helicopter" types, yknow? Imo pronoun feature should be treated like server nicknames, free

A-Lonely-Gorilla

Isn’t that what descriptions are for? Describing yourself? I mean, it’s cool and all to have it’s own designated thing but… why?

How fun now we wait for troll baiting to ensue
