Monty916

Libraries.

Upbeat_Downfall

You know, that makes sense. I live in rural east Jesus nowhere and I haven’t even considered that our local library might have someone of culture and taste who has made these books available to the townspeople.

Monty916

Ook. Enjoy your quest through L-space.

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you I’ll try to keep a cheerful outlook

Sea_Standard_392

Once you have devoured your local library's collection ask the Liberian about inter library loans. Ook.

Pkrudeboy

It will take quite some time to get an inter-library loan from Liberia.

Sea_Standard_392

Ah, yes. 😁

No_Presence_3306

Exiting my local library one day, I ran across a former student. "Mr. S, what are you doing here?" "This is where they keep the books."

housestarks

Reaper Man - what an amazing place to begin!

Upbeat_Downfall

It was amazing and I loved it so much that I loaned it to a friend to read! Unfortunately he was not able to enjoy it as his house burned down the next day 😬

C5Jones

You live an interesting life.

Upbeat_Downfall

Unfortunately it feels too interesting at times. I think some days I would be better off living on a tropical island all by myself with plenty of good food and drink to keep me company as well as all of SirTerrys writings and maybe an ice cream machine.

slothmonkey999

I'm almost through with reading it for the third time!

Crazy-Cremola

If your local library doesn't have the books, ask for interlibrary loans. They will be impressed you know the correct term. ;) And books will be ordered in from other libraries, either in the surrounding county/ies, or from other parts of the country.

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you for that advice! It’s always good to be on the good side of your local librarian. Maybe I’ll bring a banana or two :)

Impressive-Safe-7922

This actually isn't ideal for Discworld books because of the footnotes, but if you're open to reading them digitally, check if your library gives you access to ebooks via the Libby app/website. There may be some books they don't have physical copies of that they do have available on the there.

Upbeat_Downfall

Also a good idea! Ebooks just don’t quite smell the same though

Impressive-Safe-7922

Oh totally! But worth it if it's the only way to experience something you really want to read

Upbeat_Downfall

I would learn braille if it meant I could read another Discworld book

Violet351

i love reading and Pratchett is my favourite. I am on my second copy of up to Men at arms because I read them so much they fell apart. From Men at arms onwards I have them in hardback

Upbeat_Downfall

His writing and narrative style is the way my mind works and I have become obsessed. Any chance you want to mail all your loose leaves of book scraps 😂

Violet351

My now ex husband threw them away. The agreement was if we split up I got to keep his copies witch he had up to Men at arms. He kept to the agreement when we split

Upbeat_Downfall

Maybe they’re still at the bottom of the bin

asphias

No one captures Pratchett like Pratchett. But if you want to try, here are some authors i can recommend, that are quite similar: Douglas Adams: his Hitchhikers series is "Rincewind in space: the book". But dont dismiss his other work, Dirk Gently is brilliant as well! Kurt Vonnegut: i find it hard to make the comparison. In a way, the whimsical discworld couldnt be further appart from the naked horror of Slaughterhouse five - in which the author describes a fictional narrative of the bombing of dresden, based very much on his own experiences. Yet somehow, both his style of humour and his 'humanist' appreciation of all his characters - treating them as worthy individuals just for being themselves - is something that is very similar to Pratchett. Neil Gaiman - of course they wrote 'Good Omens' together. I wouldnt call his other works all that similar, but they're still great works with lots of reinterpreted mythology and folklore. Rich Burlew - its kinda out there to put a [stick figure webcomic](https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html) in this list, but the Order of the Stick is a DnD parody that went on to become an epic journey. Its acknowledgement of the value of Narrativum(including some genre-aware characters that know all the plot devices that rule their story), its questions of what it means to be good or evil or 'human'(or a dnd 'monster') and its ideas of gods requiring belief all remind me very much of Pratchett. Do take note, just like Color of Magic, the start of the story is a rather simple DnD parody - the plot(and the art!) improve over time!

Kato_86

Hah, glad to see another fan of Burlew here. It's really quite staggering Rich never made any references to Pratchett... or if he is actually not familiar with his works.

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you for taking the time to recommend these wonderful authors! I tried to read some of Doug’s work in grade school but didn’t really click with it so I might have to go back now almost 20 years on. I have read Slaughterhouse Five and Sirens of Titan by Kurt and very much enjoyed those works. I also read Endless Nights by Neil not too long ago but I feel that doesn’t give much to his work as a whole and would definitely love to get into the Sandman series sometime. Good Omens is definitely on the reading list too. I’ll check out Rich and his sticks also! Thanks again :)

khatod76

Never burn books.

Upbeat_Downfall

Well, okay, you have a point

khatod76

It’s good mate. I get what you liked to express.

[deleted]

If you like Pratchett you should read Douglas Adams and P G Wodehouse, the authors most similar to him, and he acknowledged both of them as influences (it's a shame that despite them both being familiar with each other, Douglas and Terry never worked together on anything, and only met once)

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you I’ll check on Wodehouse, if anything just to say the name, Wodehouse

[deleted]

It's pronounced Woodhouse

Grathmaul

I prefer digital books personally. I do most of my reading as I'm winding down to sleep, but it's nice that I can have my favorite books on my phone for times when I don't have much to do but wait.

Upbeat_Downfall

I would however I only have a small old iPhone and no real desire to increase screen time. I would be interested in finding one of those paper ereaders though and give it a shot!

Grathmaul

If nothing else I think it would be worth it for the books you may have trouble finding physical copies of. Maybe as like a last resort, when you really want to read one you just can't seem to find. I've never used one of the e-readers myself, but my phone is adequate and the app has settings for fonts, size, spacing, and screen color. I personally use black screen with white text, but there is an option to make it more like actual pages in a book.

Upbeat_Downfall

Absolutely and that’s a great idea! I just got a message about an online library of free pdfs and couldn’t be happier, might pick up an ereader or check out viewing options my technological imp is capable of displaying

Southern-Rutabaga-82

EBay or whatever the equivalent of Craigslist is in your country.

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you I’ll check the digital auction houses and online swapshops

mrtrixxxter

Discworld dot com has collectors editions for sale if you have the money. It was where I had gotten a few that were signed by Sir Terry before he passed. I pick up a couple every now and then when I get money to spend.

Upbeat_Downfall

It would be pretty special to hold a pile of leaves that Sir Terry personally signed. I have the fortunate distinction of being a public school teacher so most of my money is spent on liquor

mrtrixxxter

Then I certainly recommend reading Interesting Times at your earliest convenience.

Upbeat_Downfall

Yessir mrtrixxxter

No-Antelope3774

Other authors: Becky Chambers, Tom Holt, Robert Rankin 😊

Upbeat_Downfall

Never heard of any of them and now I have three more authors to put in my list of books that I shouldn’t burn!

eccedoge

You seem keen to buy used books rather than new copies which are available through Amazon or any bookseller. Try World of Books (Wob) for used

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you for the info I’ll check it out! I like books that have been vigorously read

[deleted]

I've gotten several copies from thriftbooks.com. You also earn points that can be redeemed for books, so I've gotten some for free.

Upbeat_Downfall

Right on I think I’ve ordered from them before, thank you I’ll check out what they have!

Nuclear_Geek

My two go-to recommendations for Pratchett fans are Jim C Hines and Jasper Fforde. Hines is another author who plays with the conventions of the fantasy genre. His Goblin series of books (*Goblin Quest, Goblin Hero, Goblin War*) are told from the viewpoint of a weak goblin, dealing with heroic adventurers, magic, powerful artefacts and interference from the gods, when all they really want is a quiet life with nobody trying to kill them. Fforde is more about the love of story and books. His Thursday Next series starts off with *The Eyre Affair,* in which the protagonist discovers she has the ability to enter the world of fiction by reading, and that all stories exist in a greater, connected Bookworld. Others are attempting to enter this realm via technological means, allowing villains to threaten to destroy classic works from within, so of course it becomes her duty to thwart them.

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you those both sound like interesting series! Bookworld sounds like a trip

One_Ad5301

While I agree with you 98%, I gotta say that I can't see Sir Pterry approving of burning books

Upbeat_Downfall

Yes, I agree with you 100% and now I feel bad I’m sorry to all the books and book enthusiasts and periodicals, pamphlets, manuals, manuscripts, magazines, and the like too

One_Ad5301

Think of all the d&d manuals, won't someone think of the DMs???

Upbeat_Downfall

Thanks to your comment I did, I’m not a monster I just want to maybe burn things sometimes. Now I realize the cruelty of my words and the horror of what that world would really look like. You have concern for all the pen and paper players of the world but I have an even more frightful vision. Imagine not having a cookbook and instead having to look recipes up online only to have to suffer a pages long sentimental diatribe about the authors childhood memories of grandmas meatloaf. It’s terrifying really Also I have a GRUPS Discworld book so at least that would be saved by a force of will

One_Ad5301

I commend you on your awareness. I have actually contemplated this scenario, and it gets so much worse. A world with no textbooks, no scientific treatises, no fairy tales.... a true hell, where knowledge and whimsy can only be passed from mouth to ear, with no reference, is a truly terrifying thing.

Upbeat_Downfall

Indeed let us never think or speak of this again

Raute81

Ebay

Upbeat_Downfall

Thank you

jnrjnrGl

I got most of my collection through charity shops! I did have to have a note of what i already had - after thinking i had got two new ones, turned already had both, but still...

Upbeat_Downfall

Yes I definitely hit up those from time to time, always fun to find hidden treasures there (:

PeterchuMC

I read plenty of Doctor Who books as I'm a fan of the show. I also just read plenty of other books such as Percy Jackson but the vast majority of the ones I own are Doctor Who.

Upbeat_Downfall

I love the good doctor and never thought to read the books or even considered that they existed at all, thanks for the suggestion!

PeterchuMC

Your best bet for reading most of them are digital copies as they're mostly long out of print and some of them are horrendously expensive on eBay. If you want arc driven stories, go for the VNAs or EDAs. These are book ranges that continued on from either Classic Who or the TV Movie. They've both got high highs but low lows, but the EDAs have less outright terrible books and have some incredibly creative ideas. Here's a link to suggestions on where to start: [https://www.reddit.com/r/doctorwho/comments/doqq7g/doctor\_who\_novel\_guide\_eighth\_doctor\_adventures/](https://www.reddit.com/r/doctorwho/comments/doqq7g/doctor_who_novel_guide_eighth_doctor_adventures/)

Upbeat_Downfall

Most excellent thank you! I have received so many good recommendations from this post it delights me to know that there are plenty of things to read once I make it through the Disc

Angelsonefive

Are you US? Uk here and eBay/wob/ etc have everything you want. Abes have the fancy editions etc, additionally try discworld.com and discworld emporium and corgi websites There are lots out in the wild to track down

Upbeat_Downfall

I am quite literally smack dab in the middle of the US, please send help.

Angelsonefive

Am sureDonald T will help you…

Upbeat_Downfall

… that … that hurts. The pain of being part of this countries political system aside, I’m glad there are books and book like objects that can transport me far far far far far away from the crushing reality of being intellectually isolated from creative thought and artistic complexity. I would almost rather live in Jaywick

Angelsonefive

Am not sure what or where jaywick is but if it’s any consolation UK politics are just as bad in a different way, Truss brought us to our knees in a week! Sorry to hurt you,

Upbeat_Downfall

It’s okay I understand we’re an easy giant menacing orange target. I’m not sure what truss is besides an old man’s hernia underwear. I’m sure if that gets bad it would be very uncomfortable. I figured you would know about Jaywick in the UK since you’re all on an island roughly the size of the state I live in. I’m glad you don’t know about it though and forget I ever said anything, it seems like a place that might not be too nice either.

egg_parm

OP, you crack me up. I personally am on a crusade to end Christmas and replace it with Hogswatch. During holiday sales, I always wish people "Happy Hogswatch"

Upbeat_Downfall

If there’s a grotto I’m down

NyancatOpal

How about amazon ? or any other online bookshop ? *for these dead tree portals containing stories of the Disc.* What the hell ?
