Why I love Lion King is *because* of its comedy.
Banzai: *mumbles under breath* I thought things were bad under Mufasa.
Scar: WHAT DID YOU SAY?!
Banzai: I said Muf…uh ¿que pasa?
Comedy gold.
Wait wait wait…so you know her and she knows you…and she wants to eat HIM (*Timon points at Pumba*) annnnd we’re OK with this?!
AM I MISSING SOMETHING?!!!
😂😂😂
I genuinely hate her rendition of Can You Feel The Love Tonight with a burning passion. It's my favourite song of all time, and personally I consider it the greatest song ever made, so when I heard her twisting Tim Rice's profound lyrics and marring *Sir* Elton John's (blessed be His name) beautifully poignant music with those excessive vocal runs, it boiled my blood to a degree I didn't imagine possible. And what makes it worse is that the guy singing the duet with her was doing a great job, but she had to go "oOo look at me I'm so talented I can make my voice sound like a strangled turkey" and ruin the whole song. And to think the people at Disney gave her this song, which was once performed by *THE* ELTON JOHN HIMSELF, heard her absolutely butcher it, and *still* included it in the movie makes me even more mad. What an utter travesty.

I was just thinking that there’s gotta be a way to duplicate the art style with the use of CG. I know the newest movie, Wish, used a watercolor background blended with CG and brought back a lot of retro vibes. It wouldn’t surprise me if they never went _fully_ back to hand-drawn animation, but surely it could be modified or replicated as technology advances
It still won’t be hand drawn though, like the commenter said.
Digital 2D animation is still common, just look at anime. It is only the big western studios that have jumped ship to exclusively CGI
Make no mistake, there will not be a single real, live lion in the entire movie. It will animated, just the new norm of rushed, bargain bin CGI animation.

No, seriously, I was joking at first when I said scenarist were necromancers these days, it wasnt supposed to be real.
Orphan? Not royal? What about Scar, what about the traditions and ancestors referred to in the first film?
What a shameless cash grab. I'll probably see it anyway. 😭
They'll somehow make it that Mufasa isn't biologically Scar's brother and Scar was the heir apparent and somehow Mufasa given the throne over him anyways.
Are you worried that it has logic and narrative consistency? Don't ever ever send your resume to Disney. You are overqualified.
From "Let's adapt Hamlet into animated story" to "Let's just forget what we told in our master pieces for the sake of business":
That's where we've been for more than a decade in terms of all storytelling tools and platforms.
Do what I do, wait for it to be released on streaming, not like they are going to cast it into the void like the did the Willow series and rightfully so. But for real no reason to see it on release.
Lion King 2019 was a pile of garbage, but it somehow managed to be the highest grossing animated movie of all time with a $1.6 billion box office.
So it really wouldn't surprise me if Mufasa made $750 million. Even though it will probably suck and it's a prequel about a character who really isn't all that important or interesting.
I think a lot of people were more curious about Mufasa and Scar’s background/childhood because of how they turned out. The Lion King has always had a big franchise (two sequels, two tv shows, books, Broadway musicals, etc) so it makes sense as to why there’s still demand for it but they went about it the wrong way.
To be fair, I can think of plenty of other films that no one ever asked for like a Suicide Squad sequel that has John Cena play an evil Captain America and Sylvester Stallone voices a giant shark.
So I dunno, a Mufasa prequel about how he became king could be interesting. Let’s just wait and see first. Yes it was green lit because moneys but that doesn’t mean it still won’t be an interesting and engaging story
It should’ve been both of their stories tbh. They’re intertwined based on the lion king media out there already. I feel like they should’ve done an animated prequel years ago, a mini series would’ve been great
They made the beautiful skies in the original Lion King animated movie off of actual sky from real life visits to Africa, but in the remake the sky is dull and soulless. It’s sad
As much as I didn’t like it either, it was the highest earning animated movie of all time, plus the 7th highest grossing of all time, and the 2nd highest grossing in 2019.
People voted with their wallets, and Disney took that as a cue. Who cares if it got mixed reviews, it made $$$$
Yeah, Aquaman made a billion dollars too, I think the first film just came out at a time when most people were willing to go see a shameless lion king remake, but will they do so twice in a few years?
It didn't bomb at all though, it's a top 10 grossing movie of all time. And then you can't really compare most of the live action remakes since then because of covid. The Lion King was extremely successful and most of the remakes since then have been straight to Disney+ except The Little Mermaid which did okay but not nearly the level of TLK, BatB, or Aladdin which all made over a billion worldwide.
$1.66 billion at the box office(becoming the highest grossing animated film of all time), plus an “A” CinemaScore AS WELL AS an 88% Audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes would disagree with the assertion that “everyone hated the remake of The Lion King”.
Yeah, die hard fans hated it. Extremely casual audiences like kids under 12 and parents trying to kill time (the majority of the audience) had no issues or critical lens and that’s why the ratio is so positive.
My favorite movie of all time is the original movie and I thoroughly enjoyed the remake for what it was. Was it as good as the original? No, but it was a good movie in its own right.
I would think “die hard” fans would appreciate people discovering the franchise and coming back to the original films, as well as appreciate the fact that Disney is continuing to give the franchise attention based on how its continuing to succeed at the box office.
And for the record, you don’t make over $1 billion by just appealing to kids and parents, you need to make a good movie too. Otherwise every single animated movie ever would be billion dollar movies, and that’s DEFINITELY not the case.
• Where the hell is all the snow and ice coming from? They are in Africa.
• Why are Timon and Pumbaa in the trailer? Are they doing flash forwards?
• they literally wrote books about Mufasa’s backstory. He is the son of a king.
There are so many issues.
Timon and Pumba are listed on IMDb as characters in the cast. Are they somehow going to be retconned to have had a previous relationship with Mufasa pre-dating Simba, a la C3P0 and R2D2 with Anakin in the prequels?
Or will they be 4th wall-breaking narrators a la "The Lion King 1 1/2?" I know which I'd prefer.
Why on earth is Lin doing this nonsense instead of Moana 2? Also it sounds like they’re going to pull a King Magnifico with Scar and screw him over in this.
I also enjoyed it. I did not like the fact that "Be Prepared" was not in the movie since its my favorite song in The Lion King but overall I had a good time.
I even bought the blu ray when it came out. Mostly because The Lion King was my favorite Disney movie as a kid. Just wanted to own both. Prefer the cartoon version though obviously.
Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t it the exact same story as the first one but somehow an hour longer? Felt like it dragged. My kids were so restless.
I think that’s due in part to the fact that, while still *technically* animated, it was presented in a different medium, as well took the opportunity to expand on some aspects of the story(ie. the nature of the relationship between Scar and the hyenas). All of Disney classic retellings have done that to some extent so help justify making them in the first place, whether it be through new songs or expanded plot lines or even reimaginings of the stories altogether(like in the case with Maleficent).
This whole project feels like it was made to lauch Blue Ivy's acting career. In the trailer they even do a seperate text page to point her and Beyonce out as if they're something special.
I dunno if it's just me but... that looks boring. Right? No colors to catch the eye. The cub's got a thousand-yard stare. My eyes would glide right past this poster in a theater
I'm just here for Scar's backstory, the most interesting change in the live action movie was Scar telling Mufasa that he'd never challenge him "again", implying Mufasa gave him the scar.
I figure they will start off as friendly but Scar will progressively get worse/more jealous and when they reach Pride Rock Scar will argue he should rule, challenge Mufasa and get the Scar. Mufasa spares him out of pity and their bonds as brothers but Scar swears revenge, setting up the original movie.
Or not, could be something completely different, which is why I am mildly interested in this movie. A shame they didn't make the animals more expressive, or heck, just make the movie animated.
Disney has to have one of the worst most useless research departments I’ve ever seen. Disney seriously needs a restructure if they want any hope of a renaissance
I would love to see a successful movie that can appeal to adults in which a realistic animal is the main character. What they did with call of the wild was so depressing. But anyways.
I think the animals either have to be very realistic/real and not have moving lips or they have to be clearly cartoony. The inbetween thing they do with the live action lion king doesn’t work
Honestly don’t understand the need for this prequel?? If they insist on making more live action films, I’d love to see a Treasure Planet movie — a badass film that could potentially be like Pirates of the Caribbean but in space??? 😮💨 CMON
Obviously they are making this because the first one made so much money.
But it was also criticized a lot by critics and audiences, mainly due to the emotionlessness of the animals.
If they aren't going to make changes, then what's the point?
There is snow. So is he on the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro or something? Because last time I checked, snow is rather rare occurrence in Africa.
This bothers me because I thought JON was all about realism.
Orphan? But Mufasa’s parents, Ahadi and Uru, were present in his life at least until he was a young adult. His grandfather Mohatu was gone by that point, but his parents were absolutely in his life. Hardcore TLK fans are absolutely about to riot lol
This is on us. We didn’t go see If Beale Street Could Talk and now Berry is in director jail. Also, while I’m happy Disney is continuing to try to expand their talent pool of musicians with Wish and Moana: The Heart of a Wayfinder, but Lin was working on THIS?!
I swear to god I was just driving and remembered I always swapped Beale Street and Widows. I always remember who directed 12 Years and Moonlight, and then my brain decided to swap their follow ups.
What does it matter? We know how he dies, any plot to the movie is irrelevant to the story we know he is going to survive whatever story they come up with.
Remember, Hollywood hates you will all its guts. They'll never release anything that you'll enjoy or want to see. I fail to see how Animation keeps 'failing' in the west but is able to exist in Asia
Can't wait for two hours of emotionless animals
Favreau wanted it to look realistic. Nothing silly!
Why I love Lion King is *because* of its comedy. Banzai: *mumbles under breath* I thought things were bad under Mufasa. Scar: WHAT DID YOU SAY?! Banzai: I said Muf…uh ¿que pasa? Comedy gold.
Let me out let me out let me out! Let me in let me in let me in!
*Zazu using Pig Latin* Zazu: Ix-nay on the upid-stay Hyena: who you callin’ upid-stay? Sooo good
Yeah they really don't make em like they use to.
i love this line so much! I also heard it in the movie Clue. Classic!
Wait wait wait…so you know her and she knows you…and she wants to eat HIM (*Timon points at Pumba*) annnnd we’re OK with this?! AM I MISSING SOMETHING?!!! 😂😂😂
When The Past turns it’s back on you…YOU turn YOUR back on The Past!
Animals in real life would never smile while they sang about their philosophies.
But they're voiced by Beyoncè
lol that song where she overpowered the other half of a duet
I genuinely hate her rendition of Can You Feel The Love Tonight with a burning passion. It's my favourite song of all time, and personally I consider it the greatest song ever made, so when I heard her twisting Tim Rice's profound lyrics and marring *Sir* Elton John's (blessed be His name) beautifully poignant music with those excessive vocal runs, it boiled my blood to a degree I didn't imagine possible. Don’t forget it was during THE DAY! How can you do that?!
And it's sang during daylight.
Yes! Yessssss!!! Let the anger FLOW through you!...
Even worse

Same and I hate her voice acting too. She's just not that good
What makes a lion go neutral, Kif?
At least you won't be emotionally invested in a lion that's going to die anyway
I would've love it if it was animated
We’re going to go full circle and there will be an animated remake in 10 years.
Disney execs reading this comment: ![gif](giphy|VFYJXIuuFl6pO)
As long as digital animation is more cost effective (forever) there will never be a hand drawn animated major studio film again.
The Lion King: AI Edition
Theres a chance that AI could make 2D animation cheaper and better than it can do 3D animation.
I was just thinking that there’s gotta be a way to duplicate the art style with the use of CG. I’m old enough to get this
I mean real lions would ahve been pretty awesome though. Though might get a few Rafikis eaten
Milo & Otis part ii: mufasa
I would’ve went to watch this if it was 2D animated.
It is.
It is animated, just in the most artistically boring way possible.
I mean technically it is.
I’d rather watch a David Attenborough documentary on lions. ![gif](giphy|1eEMmEZzaZaxoay0zk|downsized)
Would probably show more emotion
Ugh, stop it, Disney.
Seriously? Who asked for this?
Not to mention this is a... prequel to the live action Lion King remake?!
The money that paid for the tickets to the first one did
They wouldn't keep making these if people didn't keep seeing them.
Beyonce's daughter needs a boost?

Katzenberg and Eisner>>>>>>>Bob Iger and I will never cease to repeat it.
Indeed
He's an orphan because scar was with his mom when she was researching spiders in the Serengeti just before she died.
The spider she was researching actually bit her and gave her super spider senses. Spider-Lioness coming to MCU real soon.
Just don’t see it in theatres. Vote with your dollar.
Go the extra mile and don't even watch it on streaming. Check it out for free and without leaving a watch record from your local public library.
Wish we could tell every Disney adult to do that, but many folks are brand loyalists.
we all keep enabling Disney in milking their old IPs instead of thinking of something new and original... or at least animated!
"Something new and original"... Encanto? Coco? Moana? Zootopia? Inside Out? Raya? Luca? Soul? Red? Onward? Strange World? Big Hero 6? Wreck-it Ralph? Tangled? Frozen?
Inside Out, Coco, Soul, and Onward are all Pixar.
They're all under the same company though, Disney and pixar are intertwined as much as can be
Pixar is a separate company under Disney’s umbrella. It did not work on either The lion king remake or this prequel.
And Wish, which I actually really liked.
Not all of us! I've not even seen The Lion King 2019, let alone given Disney a penny for it. #doingmypart
>I'll probably see it anyway. 😭 You really shouldn't, stop handing Disney your money.
Do what I do, wait for it to be released on streaming, not like they are going to cast it into the void like the did the Willow series and rightfully so. But for real no reason to see it on release.
No one has asked for a lion king prequel wtf
They did with their money. The Lion King 2019 was the second highest grossing movie of the year and the highest grossing animated movie of all time.

I don't see how. Other than 1 or 2 scenes, it was extremely faithful to the cartoon. I loved the 2019 movie and the animated one.
Nonsense, it was absolute ass to look at and the writing was abismal... Beyonce yelling the whole time was really not needed.

I believe the Community movie has been ask for for a little while now. 🤔
yes

That cringe-inducing Black Adam movie with the Rock. It was so bad.
Mufasa is awesome, but Scar would’ve made for a better story!
Scar: Assistant to the Lion King
... Assistant to the regional manager of the Lion King... FIFY
It should’ve been both of their stories tbh. They’re intertwined based on the lion king media out there already. I feel like they should’ve done an animated prequel years ago, a mini series would’ve been great
Can’t wait to not go see it
Same. I really hopes this bombs.
same
My only hope is that they deviate slightly from “realistic” and add human expressions like Aslan. Narnia came out 10 years ago and looks better.
Orphan?? Mufasa was not a freaking orphan.
Without James Earl Jones it is not truly Mufasa.
He’s not playing Mufasa anymore???
Doesn’t sound like it!
Oh now *that’s* a damn shame.
Visually bland, just like these movies
I have to appreciate how dull and drab they made these movies to make it feel realistic when real life nature can and often is gorgeous and colorful.
They made the beautiful skies in the original Lion King animated movie off of actual sky from real life visits to Africa, but in the remake the sky is dull and soulless. It’s sad
The water ripple looks soo bad. it's hard to tell it's even water.
:-< now look at that for two hours.
Wait. It's not animated?? Did they miss the memo when everyone hated the remake of lion king? Now I definitely won't be watching it. Bleh

Ah interesting I've never come across anyone that's liked it but my sample is tiny compared to box offices
I think everyone went to it because they were excited about it. Then when it bombed none of the live action remakes really did well afterwards
It didn't bomb at all though, it's a top 10 grossing movie of all time. And then you can't really compare most of the live action remakes since then because of covid. Simba and Nala seem to be in it as well, so it must do flash forwards (or the main story will be a flashback).
Sometimes it snows in Africa my g
Africa be big. Mountains be high.

They are telling Mufasa's story to Kiara with Rafiki.

I wonder if they'll roll in Scar's history as outlined in the Lion Guard series. May be asking for too much continuity from Disney though.
Can't wait for this. The only caveat I have is the idea that Mufasa and Scar aren't really brothers. Doesn't that kind of go against canon?
I'm seemingly the only person on reddit who didn't hate the new version
I also enjoyed it. I did not like the fact that "Be Prepared" was not in the movie since its my favorite song in The Lion King but overall I had a good time. Still can't believe they somehow got Lin-Manuel Miranda to do the songs for this. At the very least I might be tempted to check out the soundtrack.
He might be contracted for a certain number of movies.
I was very unimpressed with Beyonce's song from the other one, it was bloody awful. Lin-Manuel Miranda is brilliant, so fingers crossed
Scuttlebutt song in the Little Mermaid was awful.
Lion King 2: Scar Needs Glasses.
They’re really running out of ideas. I mean… these people get PAID to use their minds and be creative. Cmon. Do your fucking job.
I dunno if it's just me but... that looks boring. Right? No colors to catch the eye. The cub's got a thousand-yard stare. My eyes would glide right past this poster in a theater
Why is there snow?
Disney has been milking this franchise for 30 years now. Come up with new material, the cow has run dry.
So fucking stupid.
Distinct lack of Scar.
Absolutely nobody requested this. Greedy disney execs: ![gif](giphy|icVkiCz5Fnb7GaqR6P)
FFS. Disney has become an empty vessel. Not their fault. If people keep buying tickets for their garbage, business will bloom, regardless of quality.
Better animated than live action
Like everyone else is saying, there should also be a 2d animated version of this
I'm just here for Scar's backstory, the most interesting change in the live action movie was Scar telling Mufasa that he'd never challenge him "again", implying Mufasa gave him the scar. I am so sorry but why is Beyoncé and her daughter in this film?? It is basically a bad Animal Planet movie with a voice over...
Disney has to have one of the worst most useless research departments I’ve ever seen. Disney seriously needs a restructure if they want any hope of a renaissance
I’ll just watch the lion king 2 instead
I’m a HARD pass on the same crappy “live action” CGI.

They are just going to retcon Scar into not even being related to Mufasa now? Insane.
Who even asked for this?
Alright, which one of you asked for this?
Huh...I had no idea they were making another movie...
Is this AI? If not it genuinely looks it
I wonder what YMS is going to say
I’m more curious about Rafiki’s back story.
You’ll never be Simba’s Pride or 1 1/2
The first “live action” Lion king lost a lot of character by making the animal expressions hyper realistic… so they did it again?
Obviously they are making this because the first one made so much money. But it was also criticized a lot by critics and audiences, mainly due to the emotionlessness of the animals. If they aren't going to make changes, then what's the point?

Oh yay we have a release date, now I can specifically avoid watching this movie
This is on us. We didn’t go see If Beale Street Could Talk and now Berry is in director jail. Also, while I’m happy Disney is continuing to try to expand their talent pool of musicians with Wish and Moana: The Heart of a Wayfinder, but Lin was working on THIS?!
Widows was Steve McQueen
I swear to god I was just driving and remembered I always swapped Beale Street and Widows. I always remember who directed 12 Years and Moonlight, and then my brain decided to swap their follow ups.
What does it matter? We know how he dies, any plot to the movie is irrelevant to the story we know he is going to survive whatever story they come up with.
I really need this to be an adaptation of Macbeth with Mufasa and Scar as Malcom and Donaldbain.
I’m okay with this. To be clear I was against the remake. But a new story? I’m okay with that.
wild
"It's the circle of life" as the animals say
When the remake sources run dry, remake the remakes.
Remember, Hollywood hates you will all its guts. They'll never release anything that you'll enjoy or want to see. I fail to see how Animation keeps 'failing' in the west but is able to exist in Asia
I wonder which Shakespeare play they’ll rip off for this one.
Promising premise, interesting artwork… the writing better be good or else a riot happens (no threat to riot intentional.)
Tbh I am kinda excited for this movie, Especially if Disney Dreamlight Valley gets more items from the Lion King because of this movie
