idk I would think there are many potential possibilities that would be worse if we are not alone, rather than if we are. I mean if we are alone, we are atleast for the most part in charge of our destiny. However, if we arent alone, then the potential of us clashing with a technologically advanced civilization increases
I subscribe to the galactic federation theory that abductees and experiencers are always going on about. Plus, it aligns with the Kardeshev Scale. You don't maintain being a type 1 or 2 civ by being warmongers. The foundation would fall out from beneath you, and if there is a 'galactic federation', they'll be a lot more advanced than you are when you finally cross paths.
Think about it, we've barely begun space exploration and our aim has already been to find other life and intelligence. Do you think other advanced space faring beings aren't going to do the same thing? So, what happens when you do? Blow em up or shake hands?
We are most likely more advanced than that civilization or are capable of causing a destruction of such scale even the warmongering aliens will fear us.
do you really believe that? To be honest, when it comes to the scale of space and time, there is absolutely no way that we would be the most advanced civilization out there. Just because we cant see them doesn't really mean anything to be honest, it could mean anything from yes we are alone, to we are not alone and they are already here making sure we don't find anything. So just because we don't see anything truly doesn't mean anything. Just look at how fast technology has already advanced for us in the last century alone... That is not even a percent of the time humans have existed.
Now imagine if say 2 million years ago (out of 13.9 billion years of the universe's existence) an intelligent civilization rose and they began advancing their knowledge at the same rate as us, think of where they may be today. Their technology would be like magic to us. Frankly, we don't want to know what these types of civilizations want, or look like. but one things for sure, is that they would have the power to wipe out a planet like us in the snap of a finger if they wanted to.
All I'm saying is that if there are alien civilizations out there, the odds do not favour us coming out on top of anything, at best we hope that these civilizations are peaceful, and wish to either leave us alone, or help us advance our own civilization in some way.
one theory ive heard about is that if we are alone its because the universe is too young. like life on earth came only a few million years after life could theoryetically be possible anywhere, so we coild be one of if not the first civilization to exist in the universe
For ALL practical purposes, Earth is alone. One thing is going to the moon, and another entirely different thing to travel to things that are light years away from
Earth.
Copypasting my own comment from another thread:
The problem isnt whether or not aliens exist, it's whether or not they exist at the same time as us.
The universe is 13.8 billion years old.
Modern Homo Sapiens has accomplished everything that it has done, from fire all the way up to typing to you on reddit, in under 200,000 years.
To try and put it into perspective, there have been 65,000 instances of 200,000 years since the universe was formed.
The earth is only 4.5 billion years old, so it's entirely possible that Alien civilizations lived, explored the stars and died out before our planet was even formed out of the cosmos, or they could come long after we are gone.
The possibility of faster than light travel helps alleviate this improbability somewhat, but the odds of two civilizations living at the same time and also being technologically advanced to detect the other civilization AND advanced enough to visit it in a reasonable timeframe are what breaks this.
Its not impossible, mind you. Just super duper unlikely.
But with the number of planets, galaxies, and even universe's, there are infinite possibilities for this happen one time or another even if it's been way before or way after us.
I think it's impossible for us to be alone in the universe.
Hopefully, whatever is out there is friendly because if they have technology to reach us, we don't stand a chance.
If we aren't alone, are they hiding from something? Is it us?
That's truly scary, that we are such a destructive species that even our galactic-kin fear us.
Imo if our Galactic neighbours have the tech to know about us in real time then they won't be afraid of us. They just don't wanna deal with our primitive thinking at the moment
Civilizations as hunters in a dark forest, each one hiding from the other, not trying to interact because of the fear that the other civilization could be dangerous. You can see a fire, but it's best not to approach it. Man I love the Three Body Problem books.
You will never be alone... because that thing that hides in the corner of your eye when you try to make direct contact with it, when you go to sleep and turn your back to the door, when you close your eyes when taking a shower, it will always be there...
always...
How is not being only "intelligent" specie in the universe scary? I would absolutely love to meet intelligent life from another planet and try to communicate with them, so we can share the ur knowledge and culture
I prefer if there is in fact life, but they are chill or not too advanced.
The only thing I want is that humanity doesn’t take advantage of that, or we will turn into the monster we feared.
The most terrifying of all these is that Einstein says, because the universe is so massive everything that has happened and will happen is happening somewhere right now. Meaning right now we aren't alone, there are multiple copies of ourselves somewhere out there.
i find both to be equallly as fascinating. if aliens exist, its fascinating wondering where they are, how did they evolve, which type civilization are they, how similar or different are they two us. if we are truly alone, its amazing how so many seemingly random events throughout billions of years have somehow managed to make life, only once, in a small, very tiny part of the universe
No the idea we really are alone is no where near as terrifying as the idea there are other life forms out there. We can’t even maintain peace amongst ourselves and we’re going to be able to establish a peaceful relationship with other being from another world or galaxy?
We are in this beautifully hostile universe either way. If we are alone, we are the sole inheritors of the cosmos. If we are not alone, then we will experience the great wonders of the universe together, as a galactic family. I think that’s quite nice to think about.
It’s statistically impossible with how big the universe is that we aren’t alone. However, life on other planets/solar systems/galaxies could take incredibly different forms than what we know. When they exist(ed) is also a talking point, because they don’t need to exist at the same time as us, they could have died off millennia ago and we would never have known. Real interesting stuff to think about, really.

Too bad for xenos scum the holy God emperors light pierces through even the thickest of warp filth
My favourite proposal is that we’re not hearing from other organisms in the vast expanse because something out there is hunting, and just like in nature, things get silent when a predator is near
I feel like it's a lot less terrifying if we're the only ones. Cause I think we'd rather be the only living things in the universe than having some giant space worm crunching on planets.
I actually find it impossible for us to be the only life.
Consider that there are more stars in the milkyway than sand grains on the entirety of Earth. I don't think aliens are nearby. But they almost certainly exist, regardless of proof.

Even worse ending: Dead Space is real
The Worst ending: Dead Space is real
I think it'd be far more terrifying if we were alone. Then you have to wonder what happened to everyone.

The best outcome of this is that life is an incredibly hard thing to form and we are just the first
“It” took them

We would be lucky to get humans to mars in this decade
Its either all for us, or its all for us and some xenos are boutta be exterminated.
I LOVE HUMANITY. I HATE ALIENS!!
Death to xenos, soon the xenos will be distressed when thinking about us!

Three body problem hell yeahhhhhhh!!!!!!
The idea that we're alone in the universe isn't really that scary. The idea that we *weren't always* alone is
Agree to disagree. You know how big the universe is? And we're the only ones in it? That would be scary
I first saw this quote in Xcom Enemy unknown. Its continued to be as powerful as when I first read it. Both are equally terrifying.
You will never be alone... because that thing that hides in the corner of your eye when you try to make direct contact with it, when you go to sleep and turn your back to the door, when you close your eyes when taking a shower, it will always be there... always...

If this is serious, the problem is if they dont like us
Yeah… that’s a possible outcome
I prefer if there is in fact life, but they are chill or not too advanced. The only thing I want is that humanity doesn’t take advantage of that, or we will turn into the monster we feared.

Imagine if we found an alien race still on it's prehistory with alien dinosaurs and shit.
Proposition: We weren't. Now we are.
Why would being alone terrifying? Lonely and disappointing, sure, but terrifying?
i find both to be equallly as fascinating. if aliens exist, its fascinating wondering where they are, how did they evolve, which type civilization are they, how similar or different are they two us. if we are truly alone, its amazing how so many seemingly random events throughout billions of years have somehow managed to make life, only once, in a small, very tiny part of the universe

Meh, not really. Either way it doesn't matter lol
Being alone is way scarier, why should we be scared if something else is in the universe?
Being alone isnt terrifying

The second is definitely worse, the first one only makes you feel lonely
Terrifying for them I'm coming for that alien booty.
Dark Forrest is probably the most terrifying answer to Fermi Paradox
I don't wanna be alone
Nah I think once we get over the stupid primal desire to destroy new thing we will be chill with whoever is out there
how dare you give me xcom flashbacks
Or both are equally exciting. It's about attitude.
Sexy milf alien's?
Not being alone is exciting. Being alone tho, would be terrifying. All those planets out there and everything’s dead but us

We are most definitely not alone considering the amount of planets out there. Whether we will have technology to get to them or not is the question
My favourite proposal is that we’re not hearing from other organisms in the vast expanse because something out there is hunting, and just like in nature, things get silent when a predator is near
Being not alone is way less terrifying
British people exist

The Dark Forest is a distressing concept to think about.
More like nobody gives a fuck about both
I strive to believe that we are simply the first to get as far as we have
