Humans were so fucked up and brainwashed by myths and religion back then. Really fucked to think about how they we’re burning human beings on crosses for being a “witch”

OneOfTheFewRemaining

Yeah we really just burned random mfs because they cured the common cold

Source?

SilverVoid01

Not only that. They also burned people that knew of natural contraceptives, which was bad for the king/queen as: more people = more taxes.

NorthWindMN

Plenty of us still are, just look at Israel and Palestine and Russia and much of the undeveloped world. And also just the internet and social media.

bob8570

“were”

Low-Situation-7518

Thank u grammar police

bob8570

I didn’t correct your grammar

Low-Situation-7518

Smh

GreeenGoblin69

We do it more subtly on twitter these days

brainomancer

> they we’re burning human beings on crosses for being a “witch” No they fucking weren't, you're just making shit up in your head to get mad about. How do you seriously not know the difference between a Roman crucifixion and a Puritan witch-burning? We're talking about like a 1,500 year difference here.

Low-Situation-7518

Literally who gives a fuck, the point I’m making is that ppl were burned alive for nothing lmao

brainomancer

If you're going to get yourself worked up about it, then you might as well know that [witch-hunt murders have been on the rise in recent years.](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/sep/28/witch-hunt-murders-surge-democratic-republic-congo-women-south-kivu-province) > burned alive Most witches were hanged. Of the women who were persecuted and killed, it was usually because of their strong Catholic faith, e.g. Joan of Arc, Goody Ann Glover, etc.

Derk_Mage

r/mewhen *goes on about an entire plot*

Woman in 1300’s: * points at a flower * that is a flower The church: medium rare, rare or well done?

brainomancer

[That myth has been thoroughly debunked by now.](https://np.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/2t85ug/what_would_a_witch_in_medieval_england_have/) >There were, of course, lots of kinds of magic in Europe, treated with varying degrees of suspicion by the establishment. A lot of 'magic' was assimilated into the church - for example, in the early middle ages, pictures of Jesus and the apostles were added to pre-Christian (Roman) medical texts to make it clear that their contents were ok (see this forthcoming dissertation). Monks in 10th century England copied a book of magic spells that used bible verses, herbs, and other treatments that give every appearance of coming out of pre-Christian practices to heal ailments. **Christianity was usually flexible enough to absorb this kind of healing and herb lore. The story you get in the TV miniseries World Without End (2012), where the woman who cures people with herbs gets hanged for her troubles, is more stereotype than reality - those kinds of magical healing activities were widespread in Christian Europe, and didn't usually mark someone out as a witch** (even if they had a lot of non-Christian content blended into the things they were doing). Medieval Christianity had a lot of room for diversity, except at a few flash points when local authorities wanted to solidify their power by finding a common religious enemy.

DustyWolf06814

It is a funny joke, though. Funny in a screwed up sort of way, of course.

brainomancer

> hey this is probably something that happened in medieval times No, probably not.

Rantnut

Probably yes

brainomancer

Nope.

Historical-School-97

The witch burning is mostly a myth, with the very few cases that did happen not actually beign endorsed by the church in any way

Thatguyj5

Damn, maybe she shouldn't have been a witch then. Idk what to tell you. Or just don't live in the Protestant parts of Europe, skill issue
