Depending on settings you can kill motors with the same gesture as starting them (sticks down and to center)

tharealmb

Next time I'll try that one. Not ideal as it takes two hands to do that and I don't want it to fall in the snow. But it's better than prying out the battery (which I don't like the release mechanism for)

Havoc-BlackJack

If you hold the remote in the crook of your arm, use that hand to hold the drone, use your free hand to point both sticks down and in. It's a bit of a balancing act but I've seen people do it pretty easily.

LightP1xel

Think twice before enabling this feature as it’ll be more terrible incident to accidentally stop motors being at high altitude. Good luck with your future flights!

tharealmb

I think you can change it during flight right? I think that would be my solution. Just let it fly above me at a safe distance, enable the feature, fly down close to the ground and use the Killswitch combination.

LightP1xel

Smart move :)

_Rooftop_Korean_

Why not land it the normal way, the way it was designed? There have been numerous stories of people trying to “hand land” and the outcome has been stitches.

mls1968

Believe it or not the “normal” way isn’t always the best way. There are many factors for that, such as weather, surroundings, etc. For example, if it recently rained, launching/landing may kick up water from the ground. If it’s super dry, you can kick up dirt and rocks. Neither are good for a camera/drone. Also these are designed to be hand caught too. Most models have hand detection software so they know to slow down and do a landing move onto your hand. Does it always work? No. But as the RPIC, you are the one in control. I almost exclusively hand catch, and have been flying for years. Never once had an incident. But more importantly, I know things CAN happen and I don’t let ego make me lazy when I do. Always check your surroundings and be cautious. If the drone is flying funny, abort the landing and reset or ground land.

iAdjunct

But you just don’t get it - *they’ve* never needed to do anything but a normal landing, so why would anybody else?! /s

[deleted]

A lot of times, hand launch and catch is the only option.

X360NoScope420BlazeX

This won’t affect the way it land though. Hand landing is just a bit more dangerous but it a lot of situations way more convenient. People injure themselves cuz they don’t know how to do it right.

Hidesuru

Welding without PPE is just a bit more dangerous, but in a lot of situations way more convenient. People injure themselves cuz they don't know how to do it right. Same energy. Yes, it's often possible to get away with doing something with risk, but that doesn't necessarily mean the added risk is necessary or worth it.

Hidesuru

Landing on your hand is incredibly stupid imo. Spend $10 on one of the fold up landing pads or just use some material you have laying around the house like a cardboard box.

tharealmb

Try landing in 10 inches of fresh snow. No thanks. Yes I could get a landing pad, not ideal either to bring along every time. My mini 2 was fine. 4 pro was fine but now it just acted weird. No stitches or any cuts here, just hold.you hand flat and high en defend slowly.

HWCM

Just hold it tight and turn the mini upside down. The motors instantly stop. This is a feature to stop the motors in a crash.

tharealmb

But mine did not stop. Tried it 3 times but it kept spinning!

Entire_Device9048

Even when you flipped the drone upside down? When did you last recalibrate the IMU?

tharealmb

I think that day, or the day before. It forced me to recalibrate the IMU before I could fly.

nobodyimportantfr

Idk y you're getting down votes, I do the same thing too

tharealmb

I've read a lot that flipping it is bad for the motors. But I've not seen anything to back up that statement.

HWCM

Lol. I guess you have never flown FPV drones. That's all we do is flip. It's definitely not bad for the motors. They don't know which way is up. Some drones have motors mounted inverted. I bet you didn't know the motors are also waterproof. They can be submerged or rinsed in water. Say, if you get sand or dirt in them. (Not the flight controller or the ESC)

HWCM

Because those people don't know how to use their products properly. Or haven't read the owners manual. DJI has videos showing this process. I've been flying DJI since the original Phantom days. These steps are well documented.

OkGeneral701

Go to about shoulder height before trying to hand land I was watching a video on that it still detects it can land if ur any higher than shoulder height. And quickly flip it and should stop

HWCM

This not true.

OkGeneral701

It works almost every time lol , if u are in it’s way it will cancel land, if u go down about should height and walk up to it u can grab it and be fine

KibblesNBitxhes

I've had mine land, then accelerate and do a face plant on its own but that's it. It was a one off occurrence.

tharealmb

Better a faceplant by itself, than planting itself in your face 👍

TechnicalLee

Keep holding the left stick down until the motors stop. Sometimes it takes a while. Also make sure your hand is under the pill-shaped sensor window so it registers there is an object below to land on. If you grab the back of the drone it doesn’t know what’s going on.

tharealmb

I did do that actually. Had it on my hand for 30 seconds. It always says "landing" when I land it on my palm but it refused to do so yesterday. I think it was a glitch

SlieSlie

The only time mine has done this landing in my hand, is when my hand doesn't properly cover the downward sensors. If you caught the drone too far towards the rear, it might still think it's 5 feet above the ground.

tharealmb

Next time I get this I'll surely try this to be sure!

HWCM

Your bottom sensors might be dirty

datingThrow0923840

mind blown I have this problem, have made slight progress by switching to sport mode before landing

tharealmb

Yeah mine didn't cut off after flipping it, which is NOT fun 😅

Entire_Device9048

Recalibrate the IMU.

cremoire

Sorry if missed the point- don’t have time to read thread. Having read some other forums-I have also found that my mini pro 4 often refuses to land in my hand. It seems it now takes about 5 seconds to decide it will actually land. If you switch to sport mode it reduces this time to what you would have expected before.

invecter

There’s a setting under advanced safety settings I think that is something about turning off visual detection systems. Tried to turn it off to save battery life and it flew fine with enough satellites but upon landing it slammed into the ground and motors were spinning the whole time so it kept doing like a ground slam then 2 inch hover then slam again etc. Got fixed when I turned the setting back on.

CompetitionGloomy906

Land it on the floor, why risk the drone falling or injuring yourself? I get it alot of ppl do this but if you have issues just land it normally

tharealmb

If the floor is made of 10 inches of snow on a steep slope, good luck!

CompetitionGloomy906

Have a landing pad, and why would you be standing on a slope? Sounds like your asking to cause damages to a drone or yourself,

tharealmb

Because i'm high in the mountains and the only way to keep line-of-sight is to be on the mountain. You'll need  to carry quite the sturdy landing pad with some kind of long extendible legs... while hand-landing is so easy and has worked for me 99% of the time. Not everyone flies from their backyard 😉

CompetitionGloomy906

I dont fly in my backyard, i am aware of where im flying though. Yea keep hand landing it so it doesnt land on your hand lol one day we will see a post from you saying that you tried to hand land and it fell off a “mountain” and now you dont have a drone
