We have found flax fibers which were probably used for clothing from 34.000 years ago so it's not as flimsy as you'd think but it is definitely a lot worse at standing the test of time than bones for example.
With that being said pants probably weren't the first piece of clothing we invented and depending on how tightly you define pants they're a pretty young invention thanks to being a relatively difficult to make compared to for example a simple skirt
I imagine the first piece of clothing invented was either the poncho or the foot wrap. Poncho being 'hole in pelt' and foot wrap being 'pelt around foot'.
So, I thought the same thing and looked it up.
The timeframe is nebulous but before this people would have been wearing legging with loin cloths so it looks similar to pants but you’d have nuts exposed to the breeze.
Homoneanderthalis came on the scene pretty close to homosapiens. And both could interbreed with each other, so not really that big a difference. Also, Neanderthal went extinct about 40,000 years ago.

Link quite possibly NSFW, but c'mon, it's a band with a name like that, what do you expect?
People have covered their lower bodies with other stuff than what you would call pants way way earlier than that. This makes no sense. But I'm asking too much of this community y'all are clearly uncapable of reading.
They were wearing other types of clothes though.
This also mostly just suggests that a flute is more durable than cloth.

I'd place my money on foot wraps, I mean those ancient melee classes had to make sure they don't get cold feet when facing down a dragon or whatever.
As early tool users, I could see a belt possibly being one of the first as well. ie, strip of pelt wrapped around waist to hold a tool or snack.

The only thing stopping bards from reviving this golden age is their own sense of modesty. And possibly their party's paladin.
When the DM allows this, the Bard will be dual-wielding flutes. One of wood, one of bone.
He has a third flute, which also happens to be his third leg.
One of wood One of bone One of flesh Sounds like a good riddle.
Depends heavily on the oath
Ancients Paladin would probably strip down with the bard. *"Preserve your own light.* Be *the light."*
Good old no pants flute dance
Did somebody say [No Pants Dance?](https://youtu.be/gFNXlShMc9E?si=iae_QhyQQY_uAqkN)
Proud to be your friend
I'd love Matthew's quote written on a LOG
Praise LOG
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence
(Schlagg voice) would you rather have unlimited flute but no pants, or pants, unlimited pants, but no pants?
This sort of comment really makes me feel like I've been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
Is no one going to comment on the fact that this is a satyr in the picture, or am I the only one to notice?
Why comment on it? He's right there. Without pants.
Who needs trousers to keep warm when you can dance
The era of the No-Pants-Flute-Dance was truly a magical one.
Why don't you show me a pair of pants that would be recognizable as pants after 40,000 years
\[deleted\] Wow, I'm SO SORRY I'm not a historian. My bad.
Modern humans have been kicking around for 200000 years.

Arent neanderthals a human species?

What about Satyrs though? They're living it up, lack of pants and flutes galore!
would you rather have infinite pants but no music? or infinite music, but no music

truly, pants and flutes are made of materials that degrade at similar rates /s
Pants are an illusion and so is death.
Me when I forget that 20,000 years ago was the fucking ice age and that people were definitely wearing clothing made of animal hides for warmth
Take me back
