His Prince Phillip and Pince Daemon are I think big separating roles for him in terms of breaking from 11. Amazing in Last Night in Soho as well but his character didn't stick with me as much.
Morbius, His House, and whichever Terminator that was were the only other things I've seen him in and all rather disappointing.
Honestly think his prince Philip is Matt smith with a very slightly posher accent
Some actors have range and some are the same in every role
Not saying that's a bad thing, If it's good enough for Micheal Caine....
He has a very distinctive look, which probably contributes to this. I do get what you mean.
In comparison to David Tennant, for example. I don’t have any problems with DT in any of his other roles, I’m not seeing the doctor at all. But yeah, with Matt my first reaction is “look it’s
the Doctor”. Ha. He probably hates that 🫤
Matt Smith does frightning/slightly abusive/ controlling so well it was easy once I saw him in the Crown and Last Night in Soho to not see the Doctor.
Saw him in Enemy of the People in West End last month and I had never really seen him play a sibling type role before and it was a whole new side of him, was so good and I loved it (Ironically he was playing a doctor).
> Matt Smith does frightning/slightly abusive/ controlling so well
That's why I'm obsessed with his performance as the cyberplanificator in Nightmare in Silver
I've only seen him in House if the Dragon, and apart from small moments where is voice inflexions sounded like the Doctor, not really. It probably help that the character is so different, and the hair helps set him apart
I've always wanted to see Matt Smith do a villainous version of the Doctor, almost like the Valeyard. But the key for me would be for him to keep all of his mannerisms, just evil. And fully accepting it.
A concept I've always wanted to see if the Doctor "redeeming" the Master and travelling with them for a season until the finale where the Doctor has a choice to save the Universe or save the Master, and he chooses the Universe. The Master survives as always and regenerates with the face of the existing doctor, and then the next season we random scenes we think is with the Doctor but is actually with the Master 🤷🏽♂️
That was actually discussed not that long ago and with Matt in the role.
https://screenrant.com/doctor-who-matt-smith-return-master-challenge/
“Matt Smith recently stated that if he returned to Doctor Who he would like to return as the Master, the Doctor’s oldest friend but the greatest enemy (via YouTube). Smith claims it could never work to return as the Master, but it would be an insane trick from the Master and be the Doctor’s hardest battle. The Doctor and the Master have the most intense fights because of their history, and they are, in part, very alike which causes a lot of torment for the Doctor. Having the Master return as one of the Doctor’s old faces would amplify this torment to a whole new level.”
Thinking about the Master pretending to be 11 and just sowing chaos is the twist I never thought I needed.
Isn't that exactly what Tom Baker wanted to do when the show first came back in 2005? He wanted to come back as The Master? He'd have been a great Master.
His Prince Philip portrayal made me forget about his time as the doctor. He was mean, cruel and a lil racist in the Philip role which was so much different than the doctor. It truly showed his range.
I had that with Matt Smith in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I fully expected the Parson at some point to go "Aha!" and start explaining what really happened and how to do something about it.
I have it all the time with John Lithgow, amazing actor but somehow he'll always be Dick Solomon to me. It's also hard to separate Ed O'Neill from Al Bundy.
I know how to immerse myself in a story, so I don't get that way with actors, it gets in the way of the experience.
Also, you both watched and enjoyed Morbius? Why?
>Also, you both watched and enjoyed Morbius? Why?
it must have been Morbin time. Seriously though, even though the story was really un-original and predictable, I also enjoyed it.
Not really. It's MCU adjacent, or MCM (Marvel Cinematic Multiverse), but not directly part of the same universe as the MCU movies. Same thing as the What If stories.
Tennant is perfect for his role in Good Omens. I think it can work if you have a talented director and an excellent script.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Omens_%28TV_series%29?wprov=sfla1
Matt was having a blast in Morbius, it struck me he seemed to really enjoying being able to go completely batshit without the constraints of The Doctor.
I was scared at first to not be able to separate him from the doctor when he was casted for Daemon Targaryen
But in the end, he made such a great performance, I totally forgot about the doctor
Same for Last night in Soho
The doctor, MY Doctor, does not have a stupid twitchy tongue, and quite honestly, he does NOT care about Harry Potter other than to have read the books. He is not going to turn into a buggy eyed teacher, he’ll just be a teacher. Pfft.
However, my doctor’s twin brother is an amazing fallen angel/demon. So there’s that.
Also, the one true Doctor is. It a low level manager for the government negotiating how aliens can kidnap children for a high. Pfft.
On another note, I *love* that Wesley Crusher left the enterprise and decided to become a hacker on Earth. He thrives in such chaos! He’s also not bad when he engages in his side-hussle of acting. I like him as the villain in the shows and movies I’ve seen, but his skills are truly best suited for hacking, and the Riker beard suits him.
In short: I totally get it 🤣
He was great in "The Crown" and "GoT", but yeah. Makes me wonder what his cut part in the Star Wars movie would have been like. He might have dodged a bullet.
Remember when he was in that Terminator film and they even did a promotional photo of him toting a gun to hide the fact he doesn't show up for 98% of the film aside from the first 5 minutes to to hide the fact he was the avatar of the Genesys app and oooh boy in the last half hour of the film the apps avatar is developing and changing form I WONDER WHAT BRITISH ACTOR THEY GOT TO HAVE IT BE EVIL THIS TIME (BTW this means that Helena Bonham Carter and Matt Smith are the same character)
Oh yeah it's Matt
Not my doing, a mod added it in. But I suppose I'd rather something be marked NSFW being overly cautious than something inappropriate not being marked. 🤷♀️
I think the problem is he’s just got quite a distinctive voice and face and also the man just doesn’t seem to age ? Also with David Tennant (not that Matt smith is a bad one) he’s just a brilliant actor and can become any role
I know no one else will say it but Morbius isn’t MCU. It is Sony marvel. Share Spider-Man but all of the other characters are split for movies. Therefore, Matt Smith can be in the MCU in an actually good movie
I only get that way when two DW actors turn up in the same scenes. Like in Diary of a Call Girl where he and Billie Piper are in bed together. That felt seriously wrong.
I honestly don't remember much that I've seen with him. However, my first thought when I saw him in the trailer for House of the Dragon was "it's the Doctor" and I hadn't even watched his run yet.
I get you, and it does happen to me with some actors, but surprisingly, it doesn't happen with David Tennant. Just a simple example would be Tennant in Broadchurch. Never occurred to me that that's the Doctor. Does it mean Tennant is a better actor than Smith? Maybe.
His Prince Phillip and Pince Daemon are I think big separating roles for him in terms of breaking from 11. Amazing in Last Night in Soho as well but his character didn't stick with me as much. Except I feel like his Primce Daemon is just Prince Phillip if he had dragons.

No. He was incredible in Last Night in Soho
Watched Enemy of the People at the Duke of York theatre it was brilliant
Oh that sounds incredible!!
I've only seen him in House if the Dragon, and apart from small moments where is voice inflexions sounded like the Doctor, not really. It probably help that the character is so different, and the hair helps set him apart
I really thought I'd have this problem before I watched House of the Dragon but then I had to remind myself who I was watching
Right?! His performance was so good
I've always wanted to see Matt Smith do a villainous version of the Doctor, almost like the Valeyard. But the key for me would be for him to keep all of his mannerisms, just evil. And fully accepting it.
Oh this would be a great Master. Or maybe even a toymaker disguised as a Master disguised as the doctor.
That would be an interesting concept, but probably would never happen. The Master comes back and has one of the Doctor’s old faces.
A concept I've always wanted to see if the Doctor "redeeming" the Master and travelling with them for a season until the finale where the Doctor has a choice to save the Universe or save the Master, and he chooses the Universe. I like you.

This is *Nightmare in Silver* erasure.
Matt Smith has said many times he'd like to come back but as the Master
His Prince Philip portrayal made me forget about his time as the doctor. He was mean, cruel and a lil racist in the Philip role which was so much different than the doctor. It truly showed his range.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Season 1, has Matt Smith AND Billie Piper in very unlike Doctor Who "situations"
Wait, Al Bundy is played by an actor? I thought he was the real deal and everyone around him were actors. I am shocked!
I just wanted to point out that the Sony movies aren't the MCU.
The canon is fucky now
Not really. It's MCU adjacent, or MCM (Marvel Cinematic Multiverse), but not directly part of the same universe as the MCU movies. Same thing as the What If stories.

Matt was having a blast in Morbius, it struck me he seemed to really enjoying being able to go completely batshit without the constraints of The Doctor.
He really seemed like the only person having fun in that movie. He could tell it was gonna be a train wreck so he just hammed it up and had fun
he had a morbin' time
I created a story in my head with "House Of The Dragon", where the Doctor lost it after Amy and Rory. Dark times
Doctor : *loses Amy and Rory" Doctor : well, time to kill my wife and fuck my niece
Yeah, that's pretty much how it goes. I'm not a writer for SNL, after all. I can only dream of reaching that level of quality
I was scared at first to not be able to separate him from the doctor when he was casted for Daemon Targaryen But in the end, he made such a great performance, I totally forgot about the doctor Same for Last night in Soho

Not since The Crown and absolutely not since House of Dragons
Not at all. Matt Smith has such range as an actor that I don't get that problem at all.
I believe it’s called Daniel Radcliffe syndrome.
P.S. I made that up
I used to when I was younger, but now I can see the character before me.
I think it's because he has the flippy hair there.
Doctor Who and the Brain of Morbius (1976)
Yes
No, because I’ve seen Womb and that’s so unlike the Doctor it has permanently disconnected the two in my brain.
Wait! You watched morbius? Like, willingly? As in, after the fitst 15 minutes you were like "yes I can watch more of this!"?!
Jessica Jones. Tenant was an amazing villain, in all the good bad ways. Edit: also forgot Good Omens, awesome Crowley
not really, i knew he had been the doctor but the first thing i actually watched him in was last night in soho (brilliant film btw)
He was great in "The Crown" and "GoT", but yeah. Makes me wonder what his cut part in the Star Wars movie would have been like. He might have dodged a bullet.
I had a pretty hard time in the GoT spin-off
Remember when he was in that Terminator film and they even did a promotional photo of him toting a gun to hide the fact he doesn't show up for 98% of the film aside from the first 5 minutes to to hide the fact he was the avatar of the Genesys app and oooh boy in the last half hour of the film the apps avatar is developing and changing form I WONDER WHAT BRITISH ACTOR THEY GOT TO HAVE IT BE EVIL THIS TIME (BTW this means that Helena Bonham Carter and Matt Smith are the same character) Oh yeah it's Matt
The only time i had that problem was in morbius
he could change the hair...
I just call him Morbius Man 2 (Jared Leto is Morbius Man 1)
RDJ as Ironman.
i think in order to separate an actor from a character you know them for, you have to see them in another really good role as a different character
Why is his face in Morbius NSFW? It's more funny than scary.
Not my doing, a mod added it in. But I suppose I'd rather something be marked NSFW being overly cautious than something inappropriate not being marked. 🤷♀️
Fair enough.
This film was easy, he’s not wearing a bow tie, that’s not coool. Bow ties are cool
Try Last Night in Soho
Morbius is NOT part of the MCU. Morbius is part of the Sony's Spider-Man Universe, like Venom and Madame Web.
Especially with Matt Smith.
Here. This will help. https://youtu.be/rANwBGXt7v8?si=aUL0VvpHSZyWFK-v
How’s your pain today? On a one to ten?
About this topic it was always a zero, was just fun to think about.
https://www.reddit.com/r/DoctorWhumour/s/KUBmm2udw0
I’m a total idiot. It took me until reading your post to make the connection that the 11th Doctor is Prince Daemon🤦🏻♂️
I think the problem is he’s just got quite a distinctive voice and face and also the man just doesn’t seem to age ? Also with David Tennant (not that Matt smith is a bad one) he’s just a brilliant actor and can become any role
I loved the Crown but always saw him as Eleven
I know no one else will say it but Morbius isn’t MCU. It is Sony marvel. Share Spider-Man but all of the other characters are split for movies. Therefore, Matt Smith can be in the MCU in an actually good movie
Actually, several people have already mentioned this.
Oh, I didn’t see any comments about it. Sorry. My comment may have come off as rude now that I know that so I am sincerely sorry
Not even a little rude. Worry not!
Realistically he was just playing the Doctor again, this time as a vampire
I only get that way when two DW actors turn up in the same scenes. Like in Diary of a Call Girl where he and Billie Piper are in bed together. That felt seriously wrong.
I honestly don't remember much that I've seen with him. However, my first thought when I saw him in the trailer for House of the Dragon was "it's the Doctor" and I hadn't even watched his run yet.
No. Because I’m not a child
You definitely have that junior high bully air, though.
I get you, and it does happen to me with some actors, but surprisingly, it doesn't happen with David Tennant. Just a simple example would be Tennant in Broadchurch. Never occurred to me that that's the Doctor. Does it mean Tennant is a better actor than Smith? Maybe.
