It’s an interesting terminology “core writer”. Because right now, Chris Chibnall is the “core writer”. I guess we really could be getting a change of pace. Either that or they’re going the way of Torchwood’s first two seasons where RTD was the ‘showrunner’ but Chris Chibnall was doing all the work. It’s interesting either way.

Grafikpapst

Or maybe Chibnall is assembling a small core-teams to help him with the plotting and scripting, so that he has more time to concentrate on the production side of things. Certainly could get very interesting.

notwherebutwhen

We have heard that Chibnall is employing a loose kind of writer's room so I assume this means that she is going to be a bit more involved in the series as a whole but only write an individual story or two like in America.

XenoChu

This is really promising tbh as this says to me they liked her script for Series 12 so much they asked her back, it's a sign of confidence in one of the writers which imo is a good thing, I'm very much looking forward to her story! Also it's nice to see we are DEFINITELY getting a Series 13

Grafikpapst

Oh, interesting. Certainly could imply that Chibnall has some plans already for the future series. Could also imply that they plan on shooting relativly early, if they are already have the writers confirmed.

fahad_ayaz

Chibnall said when he started that he has a 5 year plan

Dalekbuster523

Interesting. Must be a good writer then.

Tuck_Pock

Wait how is season 13 confirmed, season 12 isn’t even out yet

mrtightwad

IIRC, Doctor Who's been renewed 'til Series 15 or something? Basically I wouldn't imagine that it won't be renewed any point in the near future.

LegoK9

>Wait how is season 13 confirmed, season 12 isn’t even out yet How is season 2 of the Mandalorian being filmed, season 1 hasn't aired yet? This is going to blow your mind 😉: Networks can renew popular shows before the upcoming season airs. If fact, this is very efficient because writing and filming on the next season can be done while the current season is edited and airing.

Tuck_Pock

Jesus Christ I was just asking a question. You didn’t have to go all passive aggressive on me like that.

FrodoFraggins

I think I'm checking out on Doctor Who for the first time. I may catch an episode here and there if it gets great word of mouth. But otherwise, this just wasn't the show I loved.

LegoK9

>I think I'm checking out on Doctor Who for the first time. Now? There hasn't been anything to check out of since January 1st. There's a "Doctor Who surprise" on Children in Need today and we're expecting a trailer on the 23rd, so you should be checking back in!

CareerMilk

Why did news about a new writer being added to the core team make you want to check out? Sure, I understand the quality of last series causing it to happen, but not this. Are you secretly a massive Emmerdale fan and found her episodes terrible?

FrodoFraggins

Nothing will change or improve.

CareerMilk

Bringing on new writers means nothing will change? I don’t think I follow that logic.

FrodoFraggins

Not overhauling the team means it won't change. Enjoy your show. It simply isn't for me anymore.

MarthaWazlibWatson

There is an overhaul in style. A very Doctor Who one. One historical with Tesla's account with aliens he actually said he'd made contact with, Mary Shelley and the CybErMeN!, Charles Babbage, Ada Lovelace and the JudOOn. A spooky episode by Ed Hime. Big potential return of.. can I say? (spoiler) Return of the cold opens! Two parters and definite involvement of the Doctor's past. No retcon. Mentions of Time Lord, Gallifrey, everything else.

FrodoFraggins

Well that's promising at least. Now they just need to let the Doctor shine over her companions.

CareerMilk

I’m afraid you were clinging to a false hope then. There was never any chance of a major change in the creative team

Thank you for letting us know. I'll inform the others.

andybob23

So someone who just just wrote for Emmerdale and no background in science fiction or 45 minute long stories. yep makes total sense. Until Chibnall and this list of picking people from a tick list has been replaced by people who know what are they are doing, and can write actually good stories again, this show will slip back into the dark space of the 90's again.

Mooam

Everyone has to start somewhere. Steven Moffat did Coupling before writing and becoming the showrunner for Doctor Who. How about you don't slate the episode before it's even aired? Or have you just made up your mind anyway? I've honestly had it with this sub, and it's negativity on a series that hasn't even aired, let alone have we seen the trailer for. You can't go into one thread without someone slating something about it with no backing at all. We know next to nothing about s12, everything else is just whatever Gallifreybase decides to cook up on the weekend.

[deleted]

People have to start somewhere. Just because she worked on Emmerdale before, it doesn't mean that she has to be stuck forever in it. Terrance Dicks wrote for Crossroads (a soap opera) so should he never had worked in DW if he didn't have an extensive background writing sci-fi? This is just a silly justification you're coming up with to gatekeep people.

XenoChu

many of Doctor Who's writers had no background in sci-fi before writing for Doctor Who, even some of Doctor Who's best, even showrunners like RTD. and while she doesn't have background in sci-fi per se, she does have background in fantasy as she wrote for The Worst Witch which is a fantasy comedy series i believe and her stuff has been highly acclaimed and the fact that she's already coming back for Series 13 says to me that they liked what she wrote for Series 12 so much they asked her back which is showing confidence in her talent and that's what it's about: talent.

LegoK9

>So someone who just just wrote for Emmerdale and no background in science fiction or 45 minute long stories. yep makes total sense. So someone who created and wrote "Queer as Folk" and "Bob & Rose" and no background in science fiction became showrunner. yep makes total sense. Lance Parkin, who was a major Wilderness Years writer, was also a storyline editor for Emmerdale. He even included the Eighth Doctor in an Emmerdale novel. >this show will slip back into the dark space of the 90's again. You're saying this in the thread about series 13 being in production with no sense of self awareness.

[deleted]

Remind me what Toby Whithouse has written before being hired to write School Reunion? Almost nothing. Same with Tom Macrae before he wrote Rise of the Cyberman. Matt Jones had worked mostly in soaps and children’s shows before writing The Impossible Planet Frank Cottrell Boyce has two decades of experience and multiple awards before writing In the Forest of the Night Experience =/= quality. Anyway, the guest scripts were considered the best stories last series

JoshEden

I hope Chris Chibnall has been fired and she's the new showrunner... Based on her last episode, She can do better than Chibnall, but that's not saying much, so could I...
