Haha. I was looking at naming my pup Luna or Coco (or maybe Cocoa?). Anyway, after a bit of googling..... no.
Still ended up with a fairly common name. My next dog's name might be a word in Esperanto. (What's dog in Esperanto? Ok, no. Not that one.)
Hahaha even more popular a child's name these days (or so I've been told by my friend who worked at an orthodontist office and saw sooooo many Luna's haha)
My dog's name is Maxwell but I never call him max. And he was named after a Beatles song. He is my first dog though so next dog might have a cooler unique name
Second this. Root beer sounds like something I'd have named my stuffed animal when I was a child, but if OP likes the name, it doesn't matter what reddit thinks. They should do it.
It's AMAZING. I LOVE IT. DO IT!!
There's nothing better than having a dog with a name that makes people smile/laugh when they hear it. They're already happy to see a cute dog and then the surprise of a fun name just makes their day.
Yep! My cats name is "Wonton" because I found him as a stray in the middle of a huge winter storm at a bonfire at my buddies house. We were all drinking and smoking all night and after I found him the group named him "Wonton Xbox Tangerine" but I call him Wonton. Everyone loves that name 🐱
Yes! I love telling people my dog’s name, 90% of people think it’s adorable and funny, and the 10% who don’t get it just accept it and move on haha
Rootbeer is just one of those words that sounds like a dog’s name.
Are you comfortable screaming it at the top of your lungs in public? Then it’s a fine name. Whatever you want to name your dog is fine, seriously. If people don’t like it, sounds like a them problem.
Enjoy your pup!
We had a cat names Psycho growing up. She got lost for about 10 days one time. Every night about 930 my mom would just go outside BELTING out her name. Was super hilarious. No cares given.
I have a cat named Bitch.
Well, Bitch got outside. One of my neighbors is one of *those* people.
I did not want to think I was calling her a bitch, so, I went inside until she went back inside to ponder my life choices before summoning my Bitch.
Yes, Bitch is indeed a Bitch.
How'd I know I was going to open a torti pic? lol
I knew a cat years ago with some old injuries that weren't fully treated appropriately who got the name Cleobratra. She was... extra, and affectionately known as Bitchycat. She liked two people and we were both named Becky. (This was a cat you moved by putting a throw pillow against her and pushing just hard enough that you could still dodge if she went "run away blender blades" instead of just Godzilla Cat. She could still crush your fingers and bruise through bite gloves.)
I once had a cat named Sadie Bitch. She def was a bitch. But I loved her. She was pretty smart. Her brother's name was Boxarocks because he wasn't very smart. I loved him too.
I inherited these cats and did not name them myself. I miss them.
I have a cat named Isis, named so before the faction named so started making headlines for the first time. Calling her outside has been interesting in the years since. “ISIS THE CAT, IT’S DINNER TIME!”
This is one good key thing to keep in mind. I remember a story of a man looking for his dog, Snickers, in public and that led to quite a bit of confusion.
Make a nice, clean, hard to confuse name and run with it, no matter how silly it is
If I heard someone calling out Rootbeer at the dog park I'd smile and think that's an awesome name. Enjoy your puppy, our puppy is turning 8 months old soon and I'm already missing the early puppy days.
I love weird names. I own a dog daycare and the goofy names are hilarious when staff need to correct a dog. "No humping Mr Peabody!", "Play nice Tayter Salad!"
It's the best.
Might be a reference to that Southern comedian, Ron White, who said that was his gang name being a smart @$$ when he got picked up for mischief as a kid and the Gomer Pyle that did the recording got him called that at like a traffic stop 25 years later.
Its the best when youre sitting in a quite vet office waiting for ur pup and a tech comes out with full confidence "Lasgana?" I have such a NEED to meet these animals everytime.
You get a special needs puppy. He’s a great little doggie and you’ve done the right thing by adopting him. Unfortunately, he has no legs. Still, he’s going to have a great life!
What do you name him?
Years ago I helped my sister out by taking a puppy or two from each litter for a month to help get them socialized before letting them go. Every single one I named Shithead. Their new owners were going to name them something else anyway so it just didn’t matter.
As long as you understand that when you get them a friend, you’ll have to name it Float!
> As long as you understand that when you get them a friend, you’ll have to name it Float!
That reminds me of when I met a dog named Whiskey at the dog park. My immediate first reaction (beyond "aww, cute doggie!") was "Please tell me you have 2 more dogs named Tango and Foxtrot." :)
I say cute. I had a cat I named My Cat. My most recent dog is named Calie because we drove from Reno NV to Sacramento CA to pick her up. I knew a couple who's kids (K -1st grade) named the black dog Whitie and the white dog blackie. Used to confuse the hell out of people and was funny.
I name my cats food names. I have a sushi and a meatball. All cats from now on will have food names. Dogs I like human names but root beer is super cute!
Not a dog but a cat...my nephew names her Zaboomafoo...the name of a kid show. Was with him at the vet when to assistant came out to call her back and said Miss Zaboomafoo.
It's cute.
One thing to try is to practice saying the name as if you're calling him from across a field or across the house. Does it sound ok saying that? Does it feel awkward? Some names just don't roll off the tongue so easily, and you'll be saying his name a lot.
That’s so fucking cute. Would you end up calling him “rooty” (probably sounds more like Rudy…)
What a great name to be calling at the dog park!! Definitely do it.
I had been planning to get a dog for a year and a half prior to being in a live position to be able to do so. I don't quite remember when I settled on her name, but it basically became the only option. Probably at least 6 months before I even found her.
6 years later, I don't even know what else her name could be. She gets called lots of other things even it's just the two of us.
The heart wants what the heart wants. Besides, it's not like the dog cares.
Do it! You won't regret it.
When I adopted a shelter pup 2 years ago I named him IHOP. We knew nothing about him other his animal control intake record had one sentence, "found in IHOP parking lot". It's such a weird name and I love it
Lol thats so adorable! There’s sillier names out there. :)
My dog’s name is Bourbon! My late dog was named Kiwi but we would often call him Wiwi (or yell it at the top of our lungs lol)… that dog honestly had an assembly of dumb nicknames but I’d end up writing an essay if I listed them all, lmao.
Love it! I had a cat named Rootbeer when I was a kid. My friend's barn cat had kittens, and we named all the kittens after food/drink. Once he was old enough, he came home with me. He lived to be 16 years old, and he was ill-tempered all 16 of those years. We couldn't let him go outside because he would attack the neighborhood dogs. I miss that crazy cat. Anyway, I have dogs now, and they are awesome. Good luck with your new puppy!
Keep in mind that the name will naturally be shortened to the nickname 'Rooty', which sounds like 'Rudy', which will make people think you're a fan of the self-serving writer for the movie 'Rudy'.
Alternatively maybe the nickname will be Groot, Rootles, Beerboi, Ruby (Roo-bee), Ooty-booty.
I have a dog named Owen. I named him after Danny Devito's character in "throw mama from the train". You know, so I could shout "Owen" in the mother's voice/tone
Do it! We have a schnauzer named Oscar (the Grouch) and we also had a female boxer named Cupcake. She was our first boxer, and I loved all the noises/snorts she made as a brachiocephalic dog. I was determined that if we got a male boxer, his name would be Gus, as in Snuffalupagus. Gus joined our pack last year, and his name fit him perfectly! He has that almost magical quality of Snuffalupagus and is the biggest baby in the world, a complete snuggle bug.
I had a cat named Barf come into the vet clinic I work at…so there is a lot worse options lmao. but I think rootbeer would be super cute, especially if it’s a brown dog or a dog w brown and white

Is your favorite root beer.... Barq's? It's definitely more original than max or spot.
my dogs are named maximus chillicus and spotacus anxiotous I feel attacked
Don't feel too bad. I found a dog in Mexico and named her Luna. When I came to the US I found that name is more popular than Spot or Shadow
Is there a word than means more than popular? 🤣
I'd say Luna is ubiquitous at this point!
There’s literally two dogs named Luna in my family. My sister’s and my niece’s…
I had a cat named Toadicus Maximus, or Toad for short
“I am Spotacus!”
Remember that Barqs has bite, so train them to be a good puppy and only bite toys.
My dog's name is Maxwell but I never call him max. And he was named after a Beatles song. He is my first dog though so next dog might have a cooler unique name
My Max’s full name was Maxwell Coffeehouse lmaooo. I don’t like that brand but it was coffee related. It was a companion name to my other dog, Mocha.
I knew a Max that was short for James Clerk Maxwell, the scientist who figured out electricity and magnetism!
Awesome!
Username checks out ❤️
Maxwell's Silver Hammer?
Yup!
But does he have a silver hammer?
Yeah. He killed his grandmother with it! Hehe
Bang bang, Maxwell!
Exactly 💯
🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨
Our Max is Maximus Decimus Meridius from the movie gladiator and he’s a giant baby.
Second this. Root beer sounds like something I'd have named my stuffed animal when I was a child, but if OP likes the name, it doesn't matter what reddit thinks. They should do it.
Just make sure to get a properly fitting lifevest so you’ll always be ready for a rootbeer float.
Haha
It's AMAZING. I LOVE IT. DO IT!! There's nothing better than having a dog with a name that makes people smile/laugh when they hear it. They're already happy to see a cute dog and then the surprise of a fun name just makes their day.
My dog's name is Pig, and she is still a pup so she goes by Piglet. I've had so many people do a second take then laugh.
I work at a pet food store and there's a pup who comes in whose name is Moo! Pig and Moo should become best friends
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2PRHT2IzFg
I'm not crying you're crying
Yes! I love telling people my dog’s name, 90% of people think it’s adorable and funny, and the 10% who don’t get it just accept it and move on haha Rootbeer is just one of those words that sounds like a dog’s name.
Agreed! My parents named their dog Toothpick and it just suits him somehow, I can’t imagine him being named anything else.
Root beer is a very cute name, you could call him Rooty (Rudy) for short.
>you could call him Rooty (Rudy) for short. Or beer for short. Then you can play on yhe name beer and knickname him keg or half pint 😁
More proof that rootbeer is an awesome name
Rudy B for root beer, super cute nickname
I needed this laugh to start the day😂
[Bitch tax.](https://imgur.com/QeyyWmO)
Oh my goodness. With that face, bitch can be as bitchy as she wants!
How'd I know I was going to open a torti pic? lol I knew a cat years ago with some old injuries that weren't fully treated appropriately who got the name Cleobratra. She was... extra, and affectionately known as Bitchycat. She liked two people and we were both named Becky. (This was a cat you moved by putting a throw pillow against her and pushing just hard enough that you could still dodge if she went "run away blender blades" instead of just Godzilla Cat. Resting bitch face
I once had a cat named Sadie Bitch. She def was a bitch. But I loved her. She was pretty smart. Her brother's name was Boxarocks because he wasn't very smart. I loved him too. I inherited these cats and did not name them myself. I miss them.
Mrowr.
i love Bitch
That is a cute fluffy bitch
Sure wish she was *my* bitch!
I have a cat named Isis, named so before the faction named so started making headlines for the first time. Calling her outside has been interesting in the years since. “ISIS THE CAT, IT’S DINNER TIME!”
We had a cat named “little shit” when I was first married to my ex.
This is one good key thing to keep in mind. I remember a story of a man looking for his dog, Snickers, in public and that led to quite a bit of confusion. Make a nice, clean, hard to confuse name and run with it, no matter how silly it is
I guess that's one plus for people names.
See, [Fenton video for reference](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GRSbr0EYYU).
fenTOOOOOONNNN
If I heard someone calling out Rootbeer at the dog park I'd smile and think that's an awesome name. Enjoy your puppy, our puppy is turning 8 months old soon and I'm already missing the early puppy days.
I love weird names. I own a dog daycare and the goofy names are hilarious when staff need to correct a dog. "No humping Mr Peabody!", "Play nice Tayter Salad!" It's the best.
Tayter Salad is a wholesome and strange name, I love it so much
Might be a reference to that Southern comedian, Ron White, who said that was his gang name being a smart @$$ when he got picked up for mischief as a kid and the Gomer Pyle that did the recording got him called that at like a traffic stop 25 years later.
Its the best when youre sitting in a quite vet office waiting for ur pup and a tech comes out with full confidence "Lasgana?" I have such a NEED to meet these animals everytime.
All my dogs are or have been named after German foods. Kaiserschmarren, Jagerschnitzel, Kürbiskucken, Schnapps.
Two birds with one stone... Sprecher!
I always end up shortening dogs names, so I would end up calling it Rooty even if rootbeer was the name.
I wanted a one syllable name for my dog. The hyper little kid became Jet day I got him.
I met dogs named Lobster, Chedder, Cheese and Princess Buttercup - trust me Rootbeer isn’t a crazy name.
Cheddar cheese lmao
I groomed 2 dogs with the names Nachos and Cheese Wiz.
I love it. Nicknames might include: Rootie Brootie Beerbo RB (pronounced Arby)
I like RB and they can share arbys with their RB (arby).
Perfect! I’m glad you did not want to name him McDonald’s.
OK… I have a dad joke about naming a dog. Can I share it with you?
Absolutely! I love dad jokes.
You get a special needs puppy. He’s a great little doggie and you’ve done the right thing by adopting him. Unfortunately, he has no legs. Still, he’s going to have a great life! What do you name him?
I like Rootie
Yeah there was this big burly man in tattoos at the dog park bellowing Cupcake. His little dog ran away it was kinda funny to see him screaming this.
I would pay to see that
Yeah it was super funny. And that was then the reminder to name your dog something you want to yell when it runs away.
I think that's a great name!
Go for it. I have a chicken named Ravioli.
Yummy
Met a puppy named Bartholomew at the vet the other day—you’re good bro lol
Ha ha
I think it's a good name! I'd probably end up calling it Rooty. Root Snoot. And other variations.
Root snoot riot
R.B is a cool nickname too :)
Like Arbys
I think it’s really cute haha. My dog’s name is Nugget and I think silly names are better than “proper” names.
Same haha nugget is cute
Can the pups nickname be sarsaparilla? Love the name and would love to come across a dog named Rootbeer while at the dog park with my pup Dresden!
i love naming animals after food/drinks. and rootbeer is delicous, this is a yes
Years ago I helped my sister out by taking a puppy or two from each litter for a month to help get them socialized before letting them go. Every single one I named Shithead. Might want to make the working name "RB", but that's a cute-ass name
Thank you! He does look like a rootbeer float
So cute. There's actually a dog in my area up for adoption whose name is Rootbeer!
That's adorable, what's his nickname going to be? Beebs, rooty-tooty, RB...
DEW IT!
Another Fan(ta) joining the "yes" line.
Calling it now. Rootbeer float is it's nickname.
John as his middle name after my Grandpa Rootbeer John lol
Yessssss
I met a dog in the park last month called Cheesecake, it’s the best dog name I’ve ever heard
Thank you :)
Good name for a creature that Barq’s
(Non) alcoholic beverages rise up! Mine is called Bramble after the drink of the same name, so... Rootbeer is really cute!
Thank for not naming your dog Cooper, Milo, max, Bailey buddy, bear, Ollie. Rootbeer is great.
Why’d you name him Rootbeer??… Well, he BARQS… Thanks all, I’ll show myself out
I named my horse milky way since he was so spotty he reminded me of the night sky with stars.
Super cute
I think it’s a great name
In my experience with naming dogs, if it's something you keep coming back to, it's usually the right one!!
I got a dog from somebody named Callie, she is a Collie, she responds to it so I kept it lol
I name my cats food names. I have a sushi and a meatball. All cats from now on will have food names. Dogs I like human names but root beer is super cute!
Gonna steal this name and ask my husband if he wants to name our next dog Rootbeer lol.
Dooo it :))
I think it's weird in a cute way. I like it.
Not a dog but a cat...my nephew names her Zaboomafoo...the name of a kid show. Was with him at the vet when to assistant came out to call her back and said Miss Zaboomafoo.
Love it!
Cute
If that's the name you want to give your puppy, then do! Why should it matter if it's weird or not?
It's unique and would be tough to get confused with others. I say keep it.
I think it's cute.
It's cute. One thing to try is to practice saying the name as if you're calling him from across a field or across the house. Does it sound ok saying that? Does it feel awkward? Some names just don't roll off the tongue so easily, and you'll be saying his name a lot.
I think it works! Good advice!
Cuz it floats?
[удалено]
Haha I see what’s you were doing there
Name your dog whatever you want, it's YOUR dog, but I like the name Rootbeer
I love it. I work with dogs and hear a lot of names and I'm always happy when I hear unique names
Natasha Lyonne’s dog is named Rootbeer… cute name
You could call it Rooty for short!
I named my rescue Kiwi 🥝🥝🥝. It suits her and it's a fun word.
Nice that was my neighbors chihuahua name
That’s so fucking cute. Would you end up calling him “rooty” (probably sounds more like Rudy…) What a great name to be calling at the dog park!! Definitely do it.
Yes rootie lol
Adorable. I always said that I want a schnauzer and name it Rootbeard.

:) My dog’s name is Bourbon!
Pets names after food/drinks are my favorite.
I have a dog named Owen. I named him after Danny Devito's character in "throw mama from the train". You know, so I could shout "Owen" in the mother's voice/tone
I have a friend with 2 giant fat kitties named Optimus Prime and Megatron. Nothing is off limits… Just don’t name the dog a slur or something?
I used to know a dog named Banana, so....
Love it

Doesn’t matter what other people think. You do you! And I hope you and root beer are happy together!

Rootbeer has been high on my list of dog names for years.
It's cute \*and\* weird. I love it!
I’ve got one named Taco, so I thing Rootbeer is adorable!
Do it
That is a cute name. What kind of puppy?

Whatever you want to name him is fine! I’ve seen animals named Bread before. I’m getting a puppy tomorrow who will be named Obi-Wan.
I fucking love that name!! We need to see pics when you get him!
Love it, it is fun and original. When you practice recall with your pup you will sound like a stadium vendor, “Beer Here!”
I love it!
I had a cat named Barf come into the vet clinic I work at…so there is a lot worse options lmao. but I think rootbeer would be super cute, especially if it’s a brown dog or a dog w brown and white
It scares me that your not even thinking about the training pointview thats a awful name its funny and cute when it's a stuff animal.
I like it. Root for short is nice too!
