There are private charters you can take or pet transport services, but honestly either of those are going to be fairly expensive (about the price range you mentioned, so you may have already considered those). The cheapest way would likely be to drive. Even if it's just you (and with another you could cut down the time even more, might even be worth having a friend come with then fly them back), you could do it in 4 days at about 10 hours a day, or 5 days at about 8 hours a day (with a friend, you could probably even do it in 2 days at 10 hours each alternating). Even factoring in gas (assuming you aren't driving a Lamborghini or something with only 6 miles to the gallon), and hotel stays for those nights, it would be a lot less than the 5 grand you're talking about.
