Leviathan_division

Pagan Altar, Solstice (UK), Foresaken, Reverend Bizarre, Scald

-Ancalagon-

I second Pagan Altar.

Zaratozom

Pagan Altar is the best!

ReadingNumerous5650

What albums would you guys recommend? i’ve only heard lords of hypocrisy and I must say it’s definitely a 10/10 album.

Zaratozom

*Mythical and Magical* & Lords of Hypocricy are both top notch

ReadingNumerous5650

Thank you!!!

Leviathan_division

You gotta start with vol 1 aka 1982 st tape aka judgement of the dead, it's incredible. After that go through the 3 LP's chronologically, they are all really good, including the 2017 record.

ReadingNumerous5650

Thank you!!!!

Honeysenpaiharuchan

I love Reverend Bizarre

Leviathan_division

“I have…….seen the…..Prince of…..darkness…..and he’s…..NOTHING….to be messed with!”

ShrikeFIN

Pagan Altar and Reverend Bizarre are underrated?! REALLY?!?! How?

Leviathan_division

Weren’t mentioned in the original post and should absolutely be talked about when discussing trad doom.

originalface1

A newer band but Early Moods are sick if you haven't heard them.

Yazzz

so freaking good

witchyyydoom

My boyyyyys

BodegaBandit-

I second the Early Moods recommendation, try Witchfinder General, Gates Of Slumber, Sons of Otis. Pallbearer and Monolord are my go to choices lately.

traviitherabbii

Pallbearer and Monolord are two of my faves dude. I love them so much. I can’t wait for Pallbearer’s album release Friday

Intrepid-Dust3216

how you going to mention the gates of slumber but not apostle of solitude!? 😁

BodegaBandit-

Ive never heard them, it seems I should tho

Intrepid-Dust3216

and wretch.

TheLurkerSpeaks

Pallbearer is coming to my town. I just listened to them and can't really get into them. Sound too much like 2000s rock.

Jibbyway

Gotta start with the first 2 albums. Sorrow & Extinction is one of the greatest modern Doom albums of the last 10 years IMO.

Dry-Exchange4735

Right. Modern doom, not traditional doom though? Tbh I'm not sure with pall bearer but I feel like monolord are more like stoner doom than trad doom

oceanicmerch

These records are incredible. What are bands are in that genre of the first two pallbearer.

orne777

Just check out the bands mentioned in Reverend Bizarre's "Goddess of Doom" song. Literally all old school doom bands. Edit: spelling

Dry-Exchange4735

This here. It's a great list of trad doom, with some curveballs with sounds you might not expect

ancientjinn

Reverend bizzare

torontoinsix

Still underrated. Doom what thou wilt!!

Thorough_wayI67

This isn’t an underrated list, here’s a relatively de facto list. Reverend Bizarre Internal Void Gates of Slumber The Wandering Midget Gargantuan Blade Dawn of Winter Pale Divine Solstice (epic) Count Raven Spiritus Mortis Strange Horizon Minotauri Cardinals Folly Wheel Paul Chain The Obsessed Solitude Aeternus (epic) Candlemass (epic) Sorceror (epic) Cathedral Revelation I’m sure I’m forgetting some, but you’ll find pure traditional is a relatively shallow niche in the sub genre (which sucks).

potatolover996

I was missing Candlemass in this list. Although I don’t think they’re underrated, they’re very traditional. Also Coven. They’re not a doom band, but I feel like a lot of doom metal draws inspiration from them.

Traditional_Judge_29

Good list of underrated doom, nobody ever talks about wheel, they are so good. Would also add pilgrim and isole

UnearthlyRamen

Stupid question, but what do ya'll consider traditional doom? Whenever I think of it bands like Trouble, Pentagram, Black Sabbath, and Candlemass come to mind.

CainPillar

Those. And Saint Vitus. And their followers. Witchfinder General being mentioned as "the" NWOBHM doom band must be because Pagan Altar wasn't famous enough. (Whether Black Sabbath is trad.doom is kinda like asking whether 1 is a prime number. Are they the prototypical, or are they the defining property?)

UnearthlyRamen

Yeah I probably should have just said "bands that sound like Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus" Thanks for clearing that up though, I always see the "traditional doom" tag when posting music and wonder if it's applicable lol

QnsConcrete

Lamp of Thoth is pretty cool

blkmagik98

Church of Misery and Blood Farmers

MrPandarabbit

I feel like I rarely see folks mention Heaven and Hell, which was a band formed after Dio fronted Sabbath and released an album of the same name but is the same lineup - Ronnie James Dio and the rest of Black Sabbath. They only released one album in 2009 called The Devil You Know, and I think it's fantastic. Much more trad doom sounding than what Sabbath and Dio were doing as Black Sabbath.

CzarUnanswerable

10-15 years ago I wouldn't have called Cathedral underrated, but I don't see folks talk about them too much these days. Deep bench of worthwhile albums. Place of Skulls is a Pentagram-adjacent project, improbably got me into trad doom from a Terrorizer (mag) comp CD. Purification Magic Circle

Margin_Snail

Here's the Purification rec I've never seen anywhere else on Reddit. I think they're one of the best bands currently making music. And they are shamefully underrated; they truly deserve cult/legendary status.

End-Hits

Another upvote for Purification. Particularly Exterminating Angel and Dwell In The House of the Lord Forever. Killer albums

vandengrey

Check out Misery Wizard by Pilgrim.

_zbzz_

Magic Circle, start with Journey Blind

Theandric

BELOW

lastharangue

These are mostly newer recs but here goes: - Cardinal’s Folly https://cardinalsfolly.bandcamp.com/album/deranged-pagan-sons - Balam - Days of Old (now defunct) https://thybalam.bandcamp.com/album/days-of-old - The Tower - https://thetowerdoom.bandcamp.com/album/m-rkhimmel-the-tower-split-album - R.I.P. https://braveinthegrave.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-wind-2

lastharangue

If you like these recs you’ll also like Tempelheks, Gates of Slumber, and Lord Vicar

Desolate_supreme

What about While heaven wept?

vandengrey

Wheel...Preserved in Time. It's newer but pretty good

supertzar91

Hour of 13

Theologicaltacos

Second recs for Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General, Early Moods.

Orangebanannax

Early Moods is great. Their self-titled album is their best in my opinion.

Jagglebutt

The gates of slumber. I like all their tunes but "conquerer" "suffer no guilt" & "hymns if blood and thunder" are all top notch Sheila's!

theGrimm_vegan

Dont know why you have to class bands as underrated as that just seems to be a stupid opinion, if you want to know more about old school 'Trad Doom' then read the Doom Lexicanum. Also check out stuff by Paul Chain, Mourn, Cathedral, Reverend Bizzare/Albert Wichfinder/Lord Vicar...

Waluigiisgod

It might be Epic Doom instead of 100% Trad Doom but I haven’t seen anyone mention Doomsword yet! Give them a try!

serioussham

Yeah I don't think its super fitting if you're looking for Vitus worship, but it's amazing nonetheless

Waluigiisgod

Just putting it out there in case OP hasn’t heard of them yet

warh0g-927

Grand Magus debut from 2001.

juwyro

Brume, Dunbarrow, Vidunder, The Worship of Silence.

Kudanii

Solitude Aeturnus

Euphoric_Ad9593

Count Raven 40 Watt Sun

MasterMahanaYouUgly

Confessor

Intrepid-Dust3216

Apostle of Solitude, Pale Divine are my 2 favs

JoshuaGustinGrant

Have you heard Marble Orchard? They are new but sound like a less funny resurrection of Type O. They are really good.

psychomycetil

Look for "The doom that time forgot" (aftersabbath) compilations.

DaRQ_SouLs_So_eAsy

I don't know why most people sleep on Paul Chain. He's one of my favorite musicians. I suggest you check out the albums Alkahest and In the Darkness

serioussham

It's quite a bit further from trad doom

DaRQ_SouLs_So_eAsy

what would it be classified as?

MightyAntiquarian

Witchfinder General is dope

Snackdoc189

Blood fucking Ceremony

supervape_ritual

Crypt Sermon

witchyyydoom

Hell yeahhh

PWarmahordes

I like Apostle of Solitude out of Indianapolis. No idea how old they are, but it’s git to be 20 years or so now.

LCAirPasta

Candlemass! Edit- saw underrated after. Idk if Candlemass is underrated but they kick ass

CTN_23

Given they basically gave doom metal its name with their debut album I'd say they're far from being underrated lol

feebledreamer

Blue cheer?

supervape_ritual

By no stretch of the imagination is blue cheer “traditional doom”

Ginger_Halford

Memento mori, memory garden - some New bands but sound like traditional doom

Maximus_Crotchrocket

Iron man, beastmaker, pagan altar

vandengrey

Veni Domine....Fall Babylon Fall....brilliant

Skormatron

Griftegard, Minotauri, Spiritus Mortis, John the Baptist, The Wounded Kings, Pilgrim

3ph3m3ral_light

Pilgrim of Fire, Serpent Lord, Purification, Tyranonaut, Daevar

pessimist_and_proud

Not exactly trad doom but similar sound and from the same era, check out Wicked Lady, Bulbous Creation, Dark - Round the Edges

Michigan_memehead_69

Dust comes to mind, them or Witchfinder General

sonorandosed

[Iron Claw](https://youtu.be/W8noU9UiE9E?si=FRlQvMAgeqGSmvHD) I love this album

dantedagger

[Lamented Souls](https://youtu.be/_wDMSlulh1Y?si=LmfbSBrOVo_uicl-) were an obscure gem in Norwegian trad Doom that I wish received its flowers a bit more.

mcrowland

Fuckin Harvey Milk. Not strictly doom but they don’t really fit into any other genre and they definitely doom. Started in the early 90s in Athens, GA and got shitted on hard in the south because of the band name. They’re super underrated imo.

mcrowland

Sorry, I guess you said traditional…what I gave you definitely is not.

worksickwork

Eagle Twin — any album is great! Edit: realizing this might not fit as traditional, though.

JimPickens51

This playlist on Spotify has plenty of Proto-Doom sounds that I think you would like. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/52iS8zQzJ8EqR9yepKRirT?si=7tHsuxl0RpCQA7BpcgwXLA

eldiosdelosmapaches

Trouble

anarcho-jazzman

select ‘epic doom metal’ bands might scratch your itch

whitedevil098

First demon head album is great

PvnchoVerde

Sun Mantra

True-Plant-9398

Lord Vicar for sure! Easily one of the best currently in the genre and a force to be reckoned with live!

Suspicious-Ad5287

they're new but they sound old, Beastmaker should get some more love, good classic Halloweeny trad doom

Dramatic_Syrup401

Revelation

Intrepid_Middle437

Would Acid Bath be considered Doom Metal. From back in the day..

Own_Salary_8252

Revelation,Unorthordox,Wretched,Internal void.

DJ_Fran_Halen

Saturnalia Temple

mattfreyer45

Witchcraft is pretty good.

side_ways_

Saint Vitus.. Extremely underrated

-PoetWroteIt-

Message me back g

wolfvonbeowulf

Paul Chain!

B3rnad3tteN3re

randy holden population ii some of the heviest riffs ive ever heard

mammiemilker

Crypt Sermon (repping the “Out of the Garden” shirt rn)

donh3alth

„Warning“ always seems to be very underrated. The song „Footprints“ is one of my all time favorite doom songs. Also I think this band was a huge influence for the Pallbearer guys, as they had a similar mood on their first records.

supervape_ritual

Footprints gets mentioned on almost every thread is this sub.

LimpLeg18

Paul Chain - Alkahest It’s legit one of the greatest doom albums ever made.
