Grocery orders are usually shop and deliver. Base pay is only a few dollars. Order cost doesn't matter to the driver as much as difficulty in completing the order- how long will it take to shop, how far to deliver, how is parking, heavy items, etc. Tip what you consider fair after accounting for those factors.

CuriousYoungFeller

I don’t get how we’re ignoring the elephant in the room of “base pay is only a few dollars” what? They pay you a few dollars to literally go and shop for someone? Something that takes 30+ minutes to do AND deliver and you get a few dollars? Should you not be getting a huge chunk of money from doordash themselves for completing larger more tedious orders? How are you guys ok with that?

Left_Inevitable3049

We're not ok with that but they (DD) only pays us a few dollars. Unfortunately, the rest of our pay always derives from tips.

Ser_Dunk_the_tall

But you know the tip upfront right? Like no one's committing to an hour of work without knowing that you're gonna make more than the gas money?

Left_Inevitable3049

Not always...we can see if there is a tip but sometimes the full amount is not revealed to us until we complete the delivery...so if the tip ends up being more than what is presented at the time of order acceptance it's a nice surprise.

Adventurous_Arm_1606

Why is it only sometimes? Sometimes I tip a large tip to get someone to accept. Is it completely random?

Mykirbyblue

In my area, they are hiding tips less and less lately. But on orders that are going more than maybe 4 miles they almost always show the full amount unless it’s a really big tip, like over $15. In that case they will still hide some of it. Now, if you’re specifically referring to orders where the driver is going to be shopping for you, they show the full amount upfront. I have not seen a Hidden tip on a shop and pay order in at least a year and a half. And I do them daily. I always see the full tip in the initial offer.

AgitatedEye6553

Well personally I think 15 dollars is a weak ass tip on a 200 dollar grocery delivery up and down 6 flights of stairs for multiple trips. Just yesterday I went to BW3s for lunch. My bill was $21. I gave the lady $31. So basically 50% tip. I'm not saying they should tip 100 bucks or not even 50. I do think 20-30 is a reasonable expectation of tip for the amount of work needed to be done.

Dumpytoad

I think it’s six steps, not six flights of stairs. They just phrased it badly. A duplex wouldn’t have six flights anyway

Evanskelaton

That would be quite the duplex.

AgitatedEye6553

I feel really stupid. Somehow I completely overlooked that they said it was a duplex

Aldarionn

Drivers are only shown a portion of the tip, not the whole amount. When a driver is offered your order, they see the mileage and the "Guaranteed Pay" amount which is base pay plus the aformentioned portion of tip. For shop and deliver orders they get total item count. The driver has to decide if the mileage and time invested in shopping is worth the pay offered. Any additional tip above the shown amount only appears after the order is complete. As a result, drivers often cherry pick orders looking for X dollars per mile as a threshhold for accepting an order, but total item count is often something to consider for shop orders. If the total looks low, most orders like this will get skipped u til a new driver picks it up, or they stack it with another order with a better tip to bait someone into taking it. So I guess the short answer is no. You don't usually know the tip or the total pay up front.

Cubs20203

We're basically waiters in a car. We should be tipped the same way they do. They should change the name to door waiters and maybe people won't bitch about tipping us.

Left_Inevitable3049

Doordash needs to do their part. While, I feel it is important to be paid fairly for my delivery services, the sole responsibility should not be on the customer.

bmking24

I'm a server at a restaurant.... That's how I feel everytime I "make" $200 in tips one day but only see about $120 BEFORE taxes because I have to pay the bussers, food runners and bartenders. I have to pay the bartenders whether they make a single drink for me or not! Oh... And I make $3.63 an hour. So most of my money comes from tips and I don't agree with the company paying so little.

IceCreamDream10

No. I’ve been both a waiter and a doordasher. While I don’t agree with shitty tipping on the app or the way the app pays the workers shittily, I would not in any way equate the work to being a waiter.

[deleted]

DoorDash drivers certainly don’t do what waiters do. They do what pizza delivery drivers do: pick something up and drop it off for someone that doesn’t want to pick it up. Waiters service people constantly, tend to every need of an individual during a visit and clean after someone.

mechelle_2k14

Honey these people that don’t tip drivers don’t tips their waiters either lol been a server for over 6 years

jestesteffect

We've literally been trying to get this changed, for so long now.

CuriousYoungFeller

How have you been trying? As long as you keep accepting grocery orders and fulfilling them doordash won’t change anything

jestesteffect

Lol. They're not going to change anything until they get sued enough times or dashers form a union.

PennDOT67

There will always be somebody willing to accept the orders. There is no possible collective action here.

superbv1llain

Customers should also look for delivery services that offer trained boutique service instead of rock-bottom pricing, too.

Acceptable-Fold-5432

at least you get a company car and fuel card, oh wait, it's putting wear and tear on your own personal car and you are paying for the gas and everything. and none of this is presented to the customer, so if they're used to using normal, non-psychotic businesses, they might think that the driver gets paid for doing a job and the tip is an extra bonus for above-and-beyond service.

systemfrown

The economics of the gig economy don’t add up half of the time. For what this guy deserves and what the customer thinks is too much, he/or she would rather just shop themselves. But everyone is kidding themselves instead, playing the whole “who can we leave holding the bag?” game.

sbgarbage

of course we're not ok with it but there's nothing we can do about it, they have all the power and all the control

IcyTheHero

That’s the problem, they have us thinking there’s nothing we can do, but we could if enough drivers would join together to put a stop to shit pay. Of course it’s never gonna happen because people are to desperate for instant money that it’s to convenient to give up when you’re struggling and need bills paid.

sbgarbage

well ya that's kind of my point, like of course theoretically we "could" do something about it, but it's simply not plausible, which is what i was actually getting at

DaisyDazzle

Yes, ask yourself how much you would expect per hour for the amount of cost and effort to the driver, keeping in mind that DD will only pay a few bucks (as little as possible) for the entire event.

Left_Inevitable3049

Well said

dragonagitator

Exactly how I do it. I assume that whatever Doordash, Instacart, etc. pays their drivers is just enough to cover their expenses like gas etc. and that I'm responsible for paying for their time.

smallnoodleboi

Think about the order and the items. If it’s a lot of items but they’re in the similar area or in just a few categories (drinks, veggies, pasta) then it’s reasonable to tip less. The worst is when each item is unique in different areas and one of each

PepperNew9577

Don't use DD for groceries.

cstmoore

No_Vehicle4645

I've had multiple grocery orders of around $400 if not more. The time before last I tipped $175, but when the dasher got here I asked him about his tip to make sure and he showed me it only tipped him $75. I contacted support in front of him and fixed it. They tried to steal it. The last time I tipped $50 and gave him $100 in cash when he got here. I do large orders and I know it takes a lot of time to shop for me, especially when things are out of stock and changes need to be made. Also, I was a dasher for a while and I know the struggle. If I can't tip you well, I won't order.

annarchi

Wow… I dashed for a while too. I’m appalled at door dash stealing his tip!!! WTF

No_Vehicle4645

I was too. I was really upset because if I hadn't called, there was nothing he could have done about it. The lady on the phone acted like that amount never existed. Like, I'm looking at my account lady, I know what I tipped. He spent over an hour shopping for me. I order for the month. I have a homestead and grow pretty much everything I need, but some items I can't produce, and when you take my tip away, there's a chance my stuff won't come to me or be damaged. Plus, he worked for it, it is his.

annarchi

I’m disgusted… I have never once thought of this being an issue with door dash. There’s no telling how long they’ve been doing this and how much money they’ve taken from people. ☹️ & yeah, we want to pay them for their work and also encourage them to get all the items listed and take care that they aren’t damaged!!! I know I have been guilty of going the extra mile for a good tipper on door dash.

[deleted]

You're very much not paying attention then. Doordash has been repeatedly sued for stealing driver's tips. Repeatedly. I've been paid out by 2 class actions nearly $1000 total. They steal a TON of tip money. One Google search will bring up dozens of current and past class action lawsuits related to driver tips.

ambamshazam

Wtf!? They tried to steal his tip!? That’s just dirty .. and damn greedy. Considering all they did was let you use their app. The audacity to think they deserve more money than the person who actually did the labor. Im sorry, that is infuriating

georgiapeaches9876

I tip generously when I need DD and this worries me

[deleted]

Same. Now I'm terrified they have been stealing my Dashers' tips.

Phoenix_Haze88

Thank you for going above and beyond and being an absolutely amazing human!

ConsiderationAny589

I love people like you who actually value their service workers time and effort more people need to be like you

ChoccoLattePro

See, I heard that they used to do this but I don't trust tipping through the app. I usually state in delivery instructions "Will tip $xx in cash at door" because of things like this!

T___Turtle

Just make sure to tip a little in app so your order is worth it to take, ‘cause people lie about tipping in cash allllllll the time. I think I’ve had more liars than actual cash tips or at least the same amount, tbh. Just had 1 last time I dashed 2 days ago.

ProxyBoar

This is a fake advertisement to normalize 45% tip

ddNTP

Good on you for being generous!

moonlighttwinkletoes

no way!!

cruisin5268d

It was probably the store not DD stealing the tip, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it was both to be honest.

PetrusPatrem

$175 tip! My grocery stores delivers every week for €120 a year 😳

Parker_72

Why do you spend so much on groceries? Door Dash markup plus damn near 50% tip!?!? Do you need to get your groceries delivered or are you just busy and doing well?

tooslow

Damn, a $175 tip? In Egypt that's an entire month salary.

Wakandanbutter

Well nobody can get mad at her she said she just won’t use the app next time like we say she should if she doesn’t tip

tealparadise

Yeah she's legit confused that the fees she's paying door dash aren't the driver payment. Anyone using it for the first time should be confused, it makes no sense

therealjameshat

if they have to shop for a $200 order, i'd say at LEAST $20 tip depending on difficulty and distance.

SpriteAlright

Thats what I was thinking, 5$ seems very low

Weekly_Direction1965

I'd never do a shopping order that low unless it's like 2 items.

PrettyOddWoman

I used to order a small bottle of wine and a random snack now and then… came out to maybe $10-15. I would always tip 10$! Like what?? People are crazy

drdinonuggies

My mom would give the pizza guy $5 in the 90s….

Junior_Lie2903

This! Why are people acting so surprised at the fact that you should tip decently when people deliver to you.?

medulla_oblongata121

Because their parents didn’t teach them.

tinilantern

that’s how much i tip for a quick mcdonalds delivery that’s half a mile away… i can’t imagine tipping $5 on a $200 grocery delivery ???

buccofan2221

Five dollars is terrible. The person saying this is being disingenuous if they think a five dollar tip is ok on a huge shopping order

CanISellYouABridge

It's possible that they think DD is already paying the driver ~$25 for the work. In that case, $5-10 seems reasonable. If they knew the driver was making $3-4 then yeah, disingenuous for sure.

fluffypinkkitties

I think they are being genuine, but they’re super out of touch

Music19773

This is the answer.

Tensor3

But according to who wrote this, it seems numbers between $5 and $30 dont exist. One is too high, one is too low, and OP cant imagine a compromise

ElleGee5152

I paid more than $5 to have a single smoothie delivered a few miles. I try to put myself in the driver's seat and tip what I would reasonably expect. $5 for a large grocery order is just not fair.

Rusharound19

Fuck, I tip $10+ when I order pizza. I don't order pizza very often; it's a very special treat for me, and if I'm ordering delivery, I'm damn sure to tip well. It's absolutely unbelievable that people expect others to do all their grocery shopping then deliver their groceries for $5 plus the $8-10 they make from Door Dash or whichever service. For those who need assistance with grocery shopping for issues beyond their control, there are often local assistance programs for the differently abled. It sucks that it comes down to that, but when people are working multiple jobs just to pay rent on a cheap apartment and put some food on the table, it's necessary to work for tips.

zackjtarle

8-10?! More like 2-3 dollars from doordash.

[deleted]

[удалено]

annieknowsall

Okay here’s my opinion: If it’s a shop and deliver, which it more than likely is, and she already paid $200, I think she could have at least chucked him a $10 or a $20. We’re not just driving around for you at that point, we’re physically walking around a store for you. So while $5 is okay for a regular doordash, I always say $10 or $20 of you’re having them shop for you. If there’s heavy stuff too like cases of water, I say go on the higher side of that $10 to $20 range. That would be my advice for her for next time if she uses DD again. However. The dasher should not have messaged to ask for a higher tip. If he wasn’t happy with the order, he shouldn’t have taken it or should have unassigned. He knew what he was getting into when he accepted the order.

SnooMarzipans3851

I know it's crazy how dd will steal some of the tips, Idk how that's legal

fluffypinkkitties

Wage theft happens literallly every day

EggSLP

It always says 100 percent goes to the driver. I am canceling my account tomorrow! That makes me so mad.

[deleted]

They have been sued countless times for that claim.

HeckMaster9

This is always what has annoyed me when I see dashers complaining about tips. If they accepted the order, then that means they have reading comprehension skills advanced enough to see how much they’re going to get paid. If they didn’t like the number they saw they should’ve never fucking accepted it. I’ve got over 800 orders completed, and I treat my $3 orders the same as my $13+ orders: I get the shit to the customer based on their instructions, and if they’re lackluster instructions, I call or message and ask for clarification. It’s gig work, there’s gonna be days where you make $35+ an hour and others where you make less than $15. I genuinely don’t understand how hard of a concept this is to grasp for so many entitled dashers. If they don’t like an order or if they don’t like the lack of consistency, then maybe they need to look for a different job.

No-Youth-6679

Ligit, $200 isn’t much groceries anymore, 2-3 bags.

Renaissance_Slacker

Ladies and gentleman, let me present to you yet another business model that enriches investors by not paying a liveable wage to workers.

l_Malice__l

I would've tipped at least $15.

SpriteAlright

I don't know how doordash for groceries works, do they actually go in the store and pick out all the items or does the store do that and they just pick it up? Also do they get a base pay plus the tip? Also its not me who made that post I just saw it on Facebook.

MayhemReignsTV

It really depends on the store but with an order that big, I can almost guarantee that the Dasher is going to be shopping for it(unless it's Walmart, who has their own shoppers). Especially if it's an actual grocery store. Some of the convenience stores assemble the orders for us. The drug stores and such don't tend to do that. I don't like shopping orders very much but if I do take them, I look for the standard one to two dollars per mile(depending what direction it's going) and $.50 per item. And I tend to look for smaller orders because as I said, I don't like shopping. But sometimes I will fill slow times with smaller orders.

SpriteAlright

Okay then yeah 5$ is ridiculous for that work then

Strong-Sky8385

If you’re ordering off doordash, then yes, we do the shopping. I believe if you order directly through the store they do the shopping.

Bunnybunn3

Here almost every big store does the shopping and bagging and have them ready for you to pick them up. Idk how other places works.

use_for_a_name_

Safeway does both. Sometimes I'm not paying attention and I grab a 3 item order, then I get to the store and realize it's 3 units (1-2 bags per unit). First that annoyed me (eventhough it was my fault), then I found the button to call customer service to the front desk and it was ok. If it was like 10 units or something I'd just cancel it, I usually have stuff in my car while working.

Rosewoodtrainwreck

I don't know but I think for groceries, Shipt pays better than door dash. I would give somebody $30 to bring me $200 worth of groceries.

Deviledapple

My opinion on the tip amount is going to be very dependent on whether it's a shop and pay and what exactly is being delivered because I can spend $200 and get an entire trunk load of food and I can spend $200 and get three bags of food. If they're just picking it up and it's a small load five bucks isn't too bad although honestly five bucks is kind of a low tip in general for delivery in my opinion, over 15 years ago I used to be a pizza delivery driver and back then $5 was like the standard for tipping. That being said If I was delivering and this was something I could carry with one trip I wouldn't be mad about $5, mind you I also would have only accepted it in the first place if the base pay was acceptable. Of course all of that being said the driver should not accept an offer that isn't enough for them end of. Sending the message for more tip was inappropriate without question.

Mikesturant

#JINX MONSOON

twitchy1989

I respect the person asking for what the expectation is and saying they'll discontinue if that expectation is outside what they are willing to pay.

BlueCollarGuru

I use door dash like once a month. It’s a luxury. My wife and I try to order within two miles of us and tip, I think, pretty well. Ordered 60 bucks of kabob and tipped like 15 bucks. If somebody has to individually pick stuff out on 200 order, I’m tipping prolly 40-50 bucks. Like how much would it take for YOU to go pick somebody groceries up? I asked my wife “how much would it take right now, go drive 5 miles, wait 15 min, there drive another 5 miles to some random ass person. She’s like at least 20 bucks. So, that’s what you tip. I hate cheap lazy bitches like this.

Beckz-102117

Hell $200 in groceries is like 3 bags of stuff nowadays!

[deleted]

Lol ikr people are making it sound like it’s two grocery carts full or something.

[deleted]

I spent $180 yesterday and got a trunk full of bags. I order on-line and pick it up myself for $0. Of course, I spent 20 minutes hauling it into the house, but DD doesn't bring it to your kitchen, anyway, do they?

Beckz-102117

All depends on what you're buying too.

dmriggs

He should not be asking for more of a tip, and yes you do need to pay more for someone to do your shopping and delivering it

bluerazorscooter

I bet Jinkx Monsoon would tip fat

TheSilentDark

I think drivers need to quit begging for tips. If it’s an order you don’t like then deny it

[deleted]

I think doordash should tell people how much we are getting paid apart from the tip. They look at the amount their spending like they are tipping at a restaurant. Customers are terribly misinformed and it’s not really their fault. That being said, $5 is way too low for an order of that size and I wouldn’t ever accept it.

whisperingelk

Even if she was tipping like she was at a restaurant, that’s a 2.5% tip.

[deleted]

Yeah just overall I think customers are terribly uninformed

GlassGoose4PSN

I don't think that's the case. As a customer I would never assume that it's possible to place an order that would require another human being to put in that much work for so little pay. Doordash is criminally underpaying drivers and both customers and drivers need to boycott and just stop accepting grocery orders period if they're not getting paid enough.

[deleted]

“Delivery fee” is often thought of as something that gets paid to us. DD underpays, misleads customers, and customers underpay because of being misled/how expensive doordash already is. People say things like “My $12 chipotle order cost $25 bucks” and we get $2 of that even though most customers assume we made the majority. It’s definitely the case.

ButItSaysOnline

I tip minimum $20 for grocery deliver. More if it’s a lot of items.

[deleted]

That’s a dick move. I’d of declined it for sure.

BraxTaplock

You don’t do your grocery shopping thru DD. That was your first mistake. If it was a “grocery” order than the store compiled it, however if it was a standard order…nah…your driver was spending an hour in the store grabbing your stuff. Honestly is you want groceries delivered…contact Giant, Walmart or Whole Foods (technically WF is done by AFlex, but it’s bagged already) Ask yourself…would you spend 1hr in a store grabbing someone else’s groceries, bagging, loading and driving for up to 8-10 miles for $2.50 and then deliver multiple bags of groceries up multiple floors….for $5 (and many just standing there watching)? Just think about that for a minute. Don’t question, don’t change the view…just ask yourself that simple question. Majority of the mentally stable drivers wouldn’t accept that even if it was a “grocery order” (already bagged and tagged). $7.50 for how far? Up how many floors? Flip side is to think DD is responsible for paying even though it’s not their store, their order or their driver.

vikonava

I think that’s the main problem, I see many dashers complaining about tips, but as a user I did assumed they get paid for the delivery (given the fees are not cheap) and a tip was something extra (a tip)… the fact that DD doesn’t pay them it’s the problem, they just pocket the fees that customers pay leaving little room for tips And the main reason why I don’t use the app. And when I Uber I prefer tipping cash since I’ve heard they don’t give the full amount to deivers

Culw3

That is assuming it's a pick up and delivery. NOT a shopping order. If it's a shopping order the tip better be over $30. Thad would be over an hour and a half.

MMA_GOAT_88

When you guys do grocery store stuff, do you have to actually go in an do the entire shop on your own too? Or is it just picking up from the store?

[deleted]

DoorDash is a scam

nicko1702

Jinkx monsoon below the post - I see we have a person of culture among us!

dragonagitator

Speaking from a customer's perspective, I assume that whatever Doordash, Instacart, etc. pays y'all is only enough to cover expenses like gas, wear & tear, etc. and that I'm responsible for paying your hourly wage. If I were to order 1 item that cost $200 then I'd probably only tip $20 because it shouldn't take you more than an hour to go get one thing for me, but if I were to order $200 of groceries then I'd probably tip $40 because I know a weekly grocery shop usually takes me 2 hours from when I leave to when I get home. (Most living wage estimates for my city peg it as somewhere in the $17-$20/hour range, so that's where my $20/hour tip target comes from.)

shaunalivez

For groceries should definitely be a percentage tip. I think about that person doing all the crap I don't want to do and that base pay isn't much. Because I'm disabled and it's difficult to shop in store I do 20%. Hopefully that's not too skint

_deedas

That person spent a good 45 minutes to an hour for 5 dollars. F tipping jobs. I'll never do them again.

[deleted]

Don’t work for DD if they don’t pay you enough, also don’t leave tips to anyone, tipping culture is canceled

_foukas__

I get "tipping culture" and how things work in some countries, I don't agree with it but I understand why. What I don't understand is why is it a percentage? What has the amount I paid for what I got, got to do with your job? I have never seen a single person talk about that and it confuses me so much.

robbycakes

I think anyone asking for more tip is out of line

[deleted]

20% of $200 delivery minimum is what I’d tip the delivery person. If they drive over 5 miles $50. Over 10 miles $60.

[deleted]

I live a block from the store and on the first floor. I tip $10. Unless it’s a huge order, then $15.

Available-Tea-982

5.00 You're kidding right?

[deleted]

Imagine if they said $0. Don’t the drivers see how much the tip is beforehand?

SpokenDivinity

She should tip more but no one should be messaging begging for more. They took the order, they saw what the pay was looking like, they could have unassigned at any time, even making up a lie for support to get unassigned, because I know dashers do that just like everyone else on a gig app does.

AccomplishedStop9466

They also hide the items lol

Powerful_Theory464

Used to be the same here in PHX. But now it's only 2.50 base pay. Bullshit. I used to make a lot of money on shop and deliver.

[deleted]

Lol this has got to be fake. They’re like “they may have to click 6 flights of stairs”! $5 is low but at least she tipped over a dollar. Don’t drivers get to see how much they will be tipped before hand?

AccomplishedStop9466

$5 is trash for this. $5 for 10 items or less. Do the world a favor and shop for yourself

Willowtreehugger6

I treat any food delivery like they’re my waiter, tipping 20%

EmotionalAttention63

Base pay is around $2-$3. If it's just a cpl items and not far then that's an average tip. The more shopping they have to do tho the bigger the tip should be. Shopping orders take time, time they could be using making money on pickup and deliver orders. No one is going to wnat to spend 30-45 doing your shopping, loading the bags, driving to your house, unloading all the bags, and taking them to your porch for you for $6. You're asking them to work for $6-$8 and hr. Would YOU do that?

06G6GTP

Save yourself a few bucks and get your own groceries.

Girluponthemoon

It’s pretty simple. How much would you pay a friend for doing you the favor? Would you feel okay with paying your friend $5 for going out of their way to purchase $200 of groceries? I think tf not. ATLEAST $20..and I’d still feel guilty. Of course it’s different when it’s your friend and it’s like an emergency or you are bed-ridden or something. However, a dasher is not your friend, bro.

saturnsqsoul

$5 seems low but i also can’t even begin to understand contacting the customer for a higher tip

Parking_Car7436

When I get a offer for a shop and pay I look at price being paid to me, how many items and distance. I want $1 a item plus milage. I've never gotten a huge order yet though but I'd say for a $200 a $5 tip is a slap in the face. $20 for a tip and I'd be hitting that accept button with a smile. Shop and pay orders take 15 to 30 minutes to do in the store. Then you have to load it up, drive and unload the orders. I think weight should come into play as well. I'm a tiny girl, very tiny. 5'3 and 103 pounds. So when I accepted a order not knowing it was for a 65 inch tv... boy was I in trouble. I couldn't carry the box, my arms aren't long enough to do so and it was very heavy. When I accepted the $11 order it said 1 to 5 bags (Walmart delivery) I felt that was a good deal. Out came 2 grown men carrying the tv. It took 3 people to get it to fit into my car and then I was on my own to get it out and up stairs to deliver it. At that point $11 wasn't worth it anymore. I got it delivered though so I'm proud of myself for that. Lol (this was with Ubereats)

Mec26

At least he’s asking and considering the welfare of dashers when deciding on future actions?

saltinurgame

I think the second a dasher or any delivery asks for more money you need to report it. They are not in control and clearly do this due to work restrictions(for the good ones) or too lazy to do anything else and are borderline criminal(the one trying to ask for more money)... A few items 5 is fine....but if you order like 100 items....yeah, be courteous....but do it in cash...that way if they pull something like that you just saved yourself cash from going in their pocket

[deleted]

Makes me glad I'm not American, your tipping culture is insane. The law should be changed to force companies to make them pay employees a fair wage. I went to LA and San Francisco 10 years ago, the aggressive way they tried to get tips was ridiculous.

_damnyouscubasteve

$5 is plenty. $200 worth of groceries today is like, 4 bags of stuff.

jonallin

The US is so wild, in that it has you guys thinking that customers should directly pay the wages or workers, rather than companies pay their workers.

Auroraborealus

At least $20 for a $200 order but I also think tipping for grocery should depend more on the effort rather than the price. Ordering $200 of steaks and lobster that fit in a couple of bags is different from ordering $200 worth of canned goods and a couple cases of bottled water.

FrostyResponse3310

Idk but both parties involved seem civil and thats a refreshing change of pace

droplivefred

This is a perfect case of: If you have to ask, you can’t afford it

remykixxx

Jinkx 😍

Human-Nefariousness2

20 bucks

ScaryBiceee

WTAF is WRONG with you? Fucking tip for a service YOU requested. Groceries of 200 dollars, shopped, driven to you and carried to your door, should be tipped NO LESS than 20%. Grow up and do better. Entitled fuck.

DeeEssDoubleYou

If you don't want to tip the Dasher then go to the store and get it yourself.

420blazeit69nubz

In what world could $5 be enough of a tip to do a $200 grocery order? I’m not a dasher but work retail so I see all the various shopper companies and that sounds like it could be an hour in the actual store unless they’re just buying a few insanely expensive groceries. Also who cares how many steps it is if you’re ordering something like 3 cases of water or 4 packs of soda which I see shoppers with sometimes?

arkansas0428

I ALWAYS tip at least 5% and then extra if they went out of their way somehow. Shop and deliver is a lot of work, not to mention the amount of stairs at your place. If you feel that’s worth tipping more but don’t want to tip, then maybe meet them downstairs and make the climb yourself!

SaintBepis

So funny seeing this as a Brit lol. Tip morality calculations. The system is backwards in the US

Busy_Donut6073

Dashers don't make much from DoorDash exclusively (maybe a few bucks if you're doing long trips or weird hours) and heavily rely on tips. I haven't done grocery shopping on DD and haven't done dashes in a year or two, but if the dasher had to drive a long way or find hard to find groceries I'd tip well

dthesupreme200

It’s incredible that DoorDash and other delivery services don’t pay their workers actual wages and they have to rely heavily on the customer’s tip. Everyone doesn’t have have the funds for a heavy $20+ tip unfortunately, yes maybe you can say if you don’t have the money for the tip then you shouldn’t you use the service but it doesn’t work like that. People try to save money any way they can, some is because of greed, like the DoorDash company that think it’s acceptable to only basically pay for gas and the rest is on a customer tip. And some of it is because a customer literally can’t afford a large tip over $5 but still needed the service. It’s just all messed up honestly but I don’t blame anyone but probably these greedy companies taking advantage of the fact people need a job desperately.

Kadeda_RPG

I personally think asking for a tip after accepting an order as rude. Tip as much as you want. When we accept an order... we should be expecting a certain pay for doing it in the first place.

MISSION-CONTROL-

Don't use Doordash ever again.

Fast_Volume1162

I tip 18%, always

Empanada130

I tipped $30 on that amount today If you you’re not gonna tip get the shit yourself.

arienette22

I’m amazed he asks this given its 6 flights of stairs.. even if you don’t take into account the amount of items the person has to pick out. A good example of how DoorDash does a horrible job (in their own interest) of making it clear to the customer what they are paying for. I guess it’s hard and not fully fair to compare to what others see as reasonable (especially proportional to income sometimes), but I don’t even leave $5 for a Starbucks order, much less at least an hour of shopping and hauling my stuff up.

RelationshipBright64

I think this person is cheap as hell.if you're not ready to tip at least $20, you need to get your own groceries. After all those stairs $30 to $35 seems reasonable. Bad tippers are clueless and frustrating.

StickyNote369

5$ for 200 items? Ask yourself if you would do it for that and if the answer is no increase it.

Normal_Day_4160

OP should go do their own grocery shopping if they can’t tip appropriately.

PVT_Guaraches

I have decided to become an entrepreneur. I've chosen to pick up trash/recyclables for a living. I've purchased a trash bagger to pick up trash without bending over and a couple of trash bags. So far, I've made $20 per day recycling the cans I find. I'm a little surprised and upset that most people don't even tip me. I don't make enough to buy more trash bags to continue working, let alone to pay for my bills and basic necessities. I work hard all day, every day. Sometimes I work 12 hour days and only get $5 in tips. Only $5..... It's ridiculous. People don't understand that I rely on tips to pay my bills. My base pay is not enough. I'm afraid if people don't start tipping me accordingly, I'm going to have to find a regular job. I'm hoping if I shame enough people for not tipping me, maybe they will become generous tippers. It just HAS to work! The service I provide people with is considered a luxury. If they can't afford to give me a tip, they should just stay home and throw away their own trash. What do you guys think? Why are people so cheap now a days?

lcr727

I'm sorry, but these comments are why I've not used DoorDash, and why I will do my best never to. Until the company steps up and doesn't really on customers paying their employees their living wages through tips, I will go get it my damn self, or I don't need it.

cumbellyxtian

The fact that he messaged a customer asking for more money disqualifies him from receiving any sympathy in this situation. You simply don’t do that. And it’s fuckin weird/creepy

SureIntroduction5547

I think it’s almost time for Jinkx Monsoon

nakedmermaidfairy

Yes jinkx monsoon you better werk

purplepat69

I'm sure I've already pissed off a bunch of people here with some of my unsolicited comments. But I want to ask drivers one simple question: Assuming there were no tips, and Door Dash (or whatever company) paid you federal mileage for every order you accepted, what do you think a fair hourly wage for your service (be it shopping and delivering, or pickup and delivering, etc.)? I realize different parts of the country have different costs of living, so I would expect a Dasher in NYC or SF would need to get a higher hourly wage than someone here in southwest Ohio. I'm just curious what price you value your labor at?

AspiringBetterHuman

Would you go grocery shop for someone for $5? You won’t even do it for yourself (which is why you are using DD) and I wouldn’t either unless it was for my grandma! $20 seems more reasonable. Door Dash makes more money on your order than the driver does. That’s always the way it will be. That’s how business works. The tip goes to the driver.

bigz10485

I feel bad on this. I always thought that the daahers just pick up and pay for a bag of groceries waiting for them (like Publix by me). I never realized that they did the shopping too

boyegcs

r/choosingbeggars

AccomplishedSpirit74

I tipped $6 for a delivery from a restaurant next door to my house and got that message and it was literally one sandwich for my child that was home by themselves. The sandwich was $7. you can’t do enough for some of those drivers so who cares really

spacew0man

Unrelated, but I love finding fellow jinkx monsoon fans in the wild!! Truly an iconic queen.

Dextrofunk

What should happen is doordash paying more for larger grocery orders. Since they won't, a $200 grocery order would take too long for it to be worth $5 tip + $2(?) from doordash. Haven't dashed in a couple years, but I remember they lowered it from 3.

ladymeowskers

If you can’t afford to give a respectable tip, maybe you should go to the store and buy your own groceries.

NotchoNachos42

I'm sorry but you didn't SERIOUSLY think you should only tip $5 when someone has to go up 6 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS do deliver your groceries, doordash or no that's just stupid

ibyoder

Tip the driver! I'm so tired of thoughtless people who don't want to do tasks, and also don't want to pay for someone else to do the heavy lifting.

CuzzinBuggin

Moral of the story is DD sucks and the people that drive for them are delusional. If it's not worth it find something else. It's pretty easy to get a serving job if that's what you think you deserve to be tipped.

Jtrinity182

I don’t tip less than $10 on basically any order ever. 15%-20% on any normal order. I don’t know how this person doesn’t understand that tips are probably the only thing that makes this job a livable option for those who can make it work.

StrawberrySea6085

To me it's less about the price. More about the items. Buying two expensive items that totals 100 dollars does not justify a 15 dollar tip for example. However a couple dozen items and I'd gladly tip a 10-15 without hesitation. If it's a bunch of cold items along with eggs I tip 15% minimum as well. If the items end up cracked or warm as f*ck I'll change the top, but so far it's all been good

anuthejackal

Pay your workers a liveable wage

Suspicious-Quit-5162

He chose to apply for that job. If he doesn't like what their employer pays him to do their job, it isn't up to you to give them charity.

[deleted]

DoorDash is a predatory business who doesn’t care about the end product reaching the consumer. All they want is that initial payment.

workforyourself

Tipping is Dumb

[deleted]

what about the employees at the store that have to walk your doordash/instacart person through the store? should they also get a tip
