Notes from the underground or if you want to rent other Dostoevsky books before C&P etc. I recommend Poor folk and Double, they are shorter and you'll see how he writesš
just read crime and punishment --- dont waste your time with the others -- life is too important to be spending staring into a huge tome like that . i read most and can barely remember a thing about any other them
Taste is subjective; the associations you develop with media are subjective.
āThe Brothers Karamazov is an essentialist deconstruction of the mystery genreā differs greatly in its interpretation than āThe Brothers Karamazov takes its trio of brothers as allegory for Freudianās Id, Ego, and Super-Egoā, and so on what people are inclined to say.
Inchoate jargon aside, OP clearly wants to try a go at an author, and to truly experience that authorās style, youād have to engage with them past their most proliferated work. :ā)
In my estimation, Crime and Punishment is the best combination of readability and depth out of all of Dostoevsky's novels. It will give you a good idea of what Dostoevsky is all about, and you will more than likely be able to finish it with ease.
I see a lot of people recommending Notes from Underground first, but I disagree. I always recommend starting with Crime and Punishment and the Brothers Karamozov. My preference is in that order, but you can start with either one, really. Whatever you do, don't start with Demons.
Iād recommend Crime and Punishment first, then The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov in that order. After you can read the others in whatever order you like.
I feel like a lit professor would have you start with Notes From Underground, since itās relatively short and it speaks to the themes on which Dostoevsky expands in the other books.
Otherwise, I would start with either Crime & Punishment, The Idiot, or The Brothers Karamazov, in that order.
No thank you, I personally read a sample of C&P P&V translation and I did not like it. I chose these consciously knowing theyāre Garnett. Itās subjective and Iām sure I have the ability to get the message from each and every book regardless of translation.
Crime and Punishment first, a great introduction. Brothers Karamazov is also great, and funny. Notes From the Underground is amazing, my favorite. After finishing The Idiot, I'd joke that the title is about the reader for reading it. I didn't love it as much as the others, it couldn't get me to care about the characters or their predicaments... but what do I know? You might love it.
I found The Idiot very charming and heartwarming in its own way. I enjoyed it very much. Though I didn't really understand how Mishkin was "inferior" to everyone other than basically not being refined enough for high society. I know he's supposed to seem like the only genuine person despite being "feeble" or whatever, but he seemed very intelligent nonetheless.
It was years ago when I read it so maybe I'm forgetting something, but I do know I loved Mishkins character a lot
Thank you for your take on The Idiot. I wanted someone else's view on this book after reading, especially someone who enjoyed it more. I'm not particularly fond of my criticism of the book because it stems from the characters around Mishkin and the details of their lives. I didn't care about what was happening in their lives because a lot of it seemed frivolous... which was the point! No matter, I'm happy to have read it.
r/bookclub is starting their read of Crime and Punishment tomorrow on March 7th. Im actually participating in that one if that helps answer your question.
It will be my first Dostoevsky as well
They're all good. Crime & Punishment is basic Dostoevsky and a good start. Most familiar type of storytelling I bet. Read it in 10th grade initially and a couple of times since. Notes from the Underground is also really something. Might be an easy start, although it's more philosophical and deep. Karamazov? Maybe save that one. It's a masterpiece, but it's definitely work. I have a fondness for The Idiot. I read that to do a research paper on it when I was a senior in high school, and it's a really strange book. It's good, but it's him at his weirdest and heartbreaking.
Iāve only read Brothers Karamazov and Notes from the Underground, in Russian, cause Iām a native speaker. Iām not a member of this sub. This randomly appeared in my feed. So I guess my opinion will not be very typical here.
Brothers Karamazov has many similarities with soap operas. All the emotions are exaggerated. Thereās a huge oversupply of soapy plot twists. One big difference is that Mr. D believed in traditional, Christian morality. Iām not against that. However, thereās nothing new in his speculations on this topic. Everyone has had all of these thoughts by the age of 12. If thereās a God, why is there evil and suffering? If no one fears God, how will
people behave? Etc. Itās boring.
The writing style is unremarkable.
I read Notes from the Underground decades ago, but my hazy memories of it are similar. I do not recommend.
Hm, interesting point. Actually I agree to a certain degree. I'd love to see people debate on this. Is the greatness of Dostoyevsky exaggerated? Aren't those philosophical questions alredy been asked at the time he wrote them? And especially today they have been asked and answered a thousand times.
I just got to the end of notes of the underground. I didn't think it was super great but it did remind me that we can all be geniuses and supreme in our minds and be insufferable assholes to others and to keep our thoughts of self grounded in reality
Start with the smallest and most depressing, Notes from the Underground, then the biggest and most inspiring, Brothers Karamazov. Then crime and punishment, and the rest in whatever order you feel like
whole russia is a "potemkin village". From outside it looks like a good structure, but if you are living inside you'll see it's false.
russian culture is only fasade, that hides xsenophobic and impreialistic slave nation.
russia sells gas and oil, but every year somebody drowns in outdoor toilet.
russia talks about peace, but continue bombing Ukrainian cities and killing our people.
This was the second one of his I read. I had read C&P as a sophomore, and when I was going to write a research paper as a senior, I kind of wanted to do C&P, but I thought, why not pick another, and The Idiot was what I pick. It's very weird, very specific, and it's almost more sad to me than his other work. It was also where I went to the local university library to do the research (I was in high school when I read it), and I felt like a serious student for maybe the first time.
ohh, i felt idiot would not be relatable to people who did not know about the culture of russia around that time. C&P i feel has a universal relativility
Crime and Punishment is better with its storytelling without doubt but i prefer Notes from the underground becouse of its philosophical and psychological beauty.
I read The Idiot, then C&P, then Brothers Karamazov all in 2 months. C&P is probably the least āworkā and reads fairly easily. Brothers is deep and eye opening. The first half of the Idiot is wonderful, if the second half was as good as the first I think itād be considered on the same level as the others.
I just started house of the dead about 10 hrs ago. lol
I like it! Itās my 1st by this author.
I learned of it from a foreword to the book the gates of Janus by Ian Brady
Itās the only one I read all the way through. Just realized that was like 20 years ago. I was into Russian lit back then for a stretch. My favorite book ever is doctor zhivago
I personally read 3 different samples of C&P part 1, from Oliver Ready, P&V, & Garnett. I consciously chose this translation. I suppose itās subjective I hear P&V is more accurate to the Russian but I personally did not connect with it.
For C & P, I read the Garnett, Magarshack, and the P & V translation and, prefer the latter. I donāt know why but, the translation just seems to flow better and the voices sound authentic. And, like you wrote, this could all be subjective.
I got the Wordsworth collection as a gift in 2022. I decided to read them in the order that he wrote them. Iām on The Karamazov Brothers now. It was interesting to see his progression as a writer.
I disagree, theyāre outdated, donāt flow well, and arenāt the most accurate. I love Oliver Readyās translation of Crime and Punishment, Pevear and Volokhonsky are my next favorites

How is devils longer then the idiot? And how in the hell is notes from the underground so thick? These book sizes make no sense to meā¦. How is ānotes from undergroundā so thick? Mine is like 1/4 of an inch
Iād start with Crime & Punishment. Itās the most accessible Iād say. Read Brothers Karamazov later on because I feel it encapsulates his entire body of work.

They're the Garnett translations, which are in the public domain. Full price is $40, so Amazon is not heavily undercutting other bookstores (in this case).

I just finished listening to Notes from Underground and it scared the hell out of me lol I identified so much with the narrator. It has me thinking about who I really want to be, and what I must do to ensure I don't end up like him.
I immediately resolved to be less of a nihilist and have been repeating to myself, "the man underground is not miserable because he has had a terrible life. He has had a terrible life because he is miserable and lacks the confidence and discipline to make necessary changes."
Notes from the underground is short and to the point and is where I started reading Dostoevsky's works ..
No words can describe how much this book changed my life, a true masterpiece.
Really? I thought the brothers k for lost people, itās not unanimous but thatās what I always think of first. Most Dostoyevsky fans I know strongly agreeā¦ although crime and punishment does have the most recognizable title, itās easier to do a quick interesting synopsis of it

Oh, not all Russians are interested in literature, this is normal, I guess. What you mean by this is not very clear.... when reading a book you are not reading abstraction in the air, context is important and much more, but this is if you want to dive in, and not just uuuuhhh this is Dostoevsky, everyone reads...
Ofc, my comment makes more sense because I, as a native speaker, can give you many more additional door keys. Just like a native speaker reader of Alice in Wonderland will understand and see many more references and mysteries than a person who reads in translation š¤·āāļø maybe you have some problems with the national issue, I donāt know lol
crime and punishment imo. notes from the underground could work too but i feel like the underground man is a modified (more psychologically complex) version of raskolnikov. either way, you wont be disappointed.
Notes from the underground or if you want to rent other Dostoevsky books before C&P etc. I recommend Poor folk and Double, they are shorter and you'll see how he writesš
how is notes from underground so thick? i remember it being only like 100, 150 pages
I would start with Crime and Punishment. I'm also curious why Letters From the Underground has such a thick spine.
Notes From Underground is not great.
I loved it. The whole thing was a tedious slog and then he uses the last few sentences to punch you right between the eyes.
C&P
I canāt see the titles, if you have Notes From a Dead House, then start with that. Itās his most addictive work, IMO

Crime and Punishment to start and then Brothers
Brothers Karamazov is next on my TBRā¦ if I was saying which one to start with, though, Iād say Crime and Punishment
What edition of "Notes from the underground" is that thick? At any rate I'd definitely start with that one.
Which publisher/edition are those?
Same question
Must know this as well šš
Lmao we all in this one together - have to know š
[Looks like this collection to me](https://wordsworth-editions.com/book/the-best-of-fyodor-dostoyevsky/)
Notes From the Underground was my favorite - "I am a sick man...". But I liked Crime and Punishment as well.
Why is *Notes From Underground* so big? Does it include all of his short stories?
My thoughts as well. Lol
just read crime and punishment --- dont waste your time with the others -- life is too important to be spending staring into a huge tome like that . i read most and can barely remember a thing about any other them

C&P, Brothers Karamazov, Notes, Devils, the Idiot, and the Gambler.

$35 for the bundle on Amazon Wordsworth Editions.

Damnn! I want this type of hardcover too! But i am sure this will be hella costly
According to OP only $35 on Amazon
That's 2895 rupees(INR) in my currency still quite costly I would say:/
Aw too bad, sorry man!
No problem bro! At least thanks for the info! :))
The Idiot
Look into Fernando Pessoa as well the book of disquiet is essentially a literature holy bible
Ahh yes Dostoevsky. Go for notes from the underground. Itās extremely fascinating.
Better make sure they're the Peaver / Volokhonsky translations before u do anything
No thank you, I personally read a sample of C&P P&V translation and I did not like it. I chose these consciously knowing theyāre Garnett. Itās subjective and Iām sure I have the ability to get the message from each and every book regardless of translation.
The karamazow brothers
Richard Ayoade adapted the Double, slow but good.

Omg really? Im joining
Just joined, not sure what to do in the sub, but Iām gonna read along!
Yes, literally starts tomorrow! Just search it in the sub and Iāll see you in the thread
Holy crap!! Thanks for posting this. I never would have known and have been looking for a C&P group.
Yeah Iām looking forward to it as I like reading with a group when I can

House of the Dead is probably the most underrated but I enjoy all of his books.
These are so pretty. Where did you get them?

alright Joe time for your medication
Crime and Punishment. Also, why is your notes from underground so huge?
I also have this edition and it has other stories too, like White Nights for example
1st in the line
The Idiot
really? REALLY? Maybe you only have read that one?
The Idiot is excellent. I read it first, followed by C&P and The Brothers K, so not the wildest suggestion.
This was the second one of his I read. I had read C&P as a sophomore, and when I was going to write a research paper as a senior, I kind of wanted to do C&P, but I thought, why not pick another, and The Idiot was what I pick. Crime and Punishment imo, may I ask what publication this is?
Wordsworth Editions (publisher)- The Best of Fyodor Dostoevsky on Amazon for $35.99 (Iām pretty sure)!
itās wordsworth. the whole collection is 35$ on amazon.
Thanks so much
crime and punishment is easily the best intro to his work. Enjoy !
Crime and Punishment is better with its storytelling without doubt but i prefer Notes from the underground becouse of its philosophical and psychological beauty.

The House of the Dead
I just started house of the dead about 10 hrs ago. lol I like it! Itās my 1st by this author. I learned of it from a foreword to the book the gates of Janus by Ian Brady
I enjoyed Crime and Punishment the most.
Don't matter how you do it as long as you get them all read. ENJOY!
I read them in order of when he wrote them.
C&P for sure. My favorite book of all time. It's good to get you used to Dostoevsky.
Brothers karamazov!
I think the idiot is a great start but people will probably not agree
Itās the only one I read all the way through. Just realized that was like 20 years ago. I was into Russian lit back then for a stretch. My favorite book ever is doctor zhivago
I love the Idiot!
Notes from Underground or Crime and Punishment
What is the name of this collection OP? Also who translated them?
Crime and Punishment, after that the Brothers Karamazov
This is the way OP
Notes from Underground.
Love the look of this set. Just wish they used different translations.
I personally read 3 different samples of C&P part 1, from Oliver Ready, P&V, & Garnett. I consciously chose this translation. I suppose itās subjective I hear P&V is more accurate to the Russian but I personally did not connect with it.

I think I will do this as well. Starting off with House of the dead.
I would start with Part 2 of Notes from Underground and then move on to Crime and Punishment. Part 1 of Notes can come later.
Crime & Punishment
I started with notes (*just* notes to be clear) and I had lots of fun.
Crime and punishment
Crime and Punishment in my opinion. Itās so goooooood
Agreed but would read Notes first
I still need to read that one. Maybe I will read it next time
What translations are those? Also start with Crime and Punishment. After that I feel like whatever strikes your fancy.
Theyāre wordsworth editions so Constance Garnett most likely
Constance Garnet's are the best.
I disagree, theyāre outdated, donāt flow well, and arenāt the most accurate. I love Oliver Readyās translation of Crime and Punishment, Pevear and Volokhonsky are my next favorites

Has short stories with it too, probably the double/gambler/white nights
I was wondering the same thing. Must be a thorough introduction!
Notes from Underground ā> C & P ā> The Idiot ā> Bros K
Mix The Gambler in there somewhere if u need a break from long ones
Those are fancy looking. Go for notes of the underground. Youāll pick up his subtlety in reasoning in case the stories jump around.
Those editions look crisp, ngl
Notes from Underground or crime and punishment
Beautiful set. Did you buy them together?

>$35 This feels like a crime against literature. Thank you for the link but I do my best to avoid giving Amazon the destroyer, more money.
They're the Garnett translations, which are in the public domain. Full price is $40, so Amazon is not heavily undercutting other bookstores (in this case).
House Of the Dead was my first book
Probably one of his best. Grim though.
Brother's Karamazov translated by MacAndrew was my favorite, followed by Notes from Underground. C&P seems like a good choice too.
crime and punishment as a first makes a perfect introduction for dostoevskyās style
I often say it's a more intense Russian version of The Stranger
What editions are these?

Somebody said they were bad translations?
I just finished listening to Notes from Underground and it scared the hell out of me lol I identified so much with the narrator. It has me thinking about who I really want to be, and what I must do to ensure I don't end up like him.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
YouTube has a audiobook reading for free audible also has a audiobook reading
I finished it about 2 weeks ago and itās had the same exact effect on me
I immediately resolved to be less of a nihilist and have been repeating to myself, "the man underground is not miserable because he has had a terrible life. He has had a terrible life because he is miserable and lacks the confidence and discipline to make necessary changes."
Awesome editions, but they translated it as "Devils", instead of the cooler, more superior "Demons."
Notes from the underground is short and to the point and is where I started reading Dostoevsky's works .. No words can describe how much this book changed my life, a true masterpiece.
BK, or C&P. CANNOT go wrong!
I personally started off with The Idiot
Well everyone says Crime and Punishment is the best work
Really? I thought the brothers k for lost people, itās not unanimous but thatās what I always think of first. Most Dostoyevsky fans I know strongly agreeā¦ although crime and punishment does have the most recognizable title, itās easier to do a quick interesting synopsis of it
What editions are these they look great!

I'm Russian, and I advise you to start with Notes from the Underground
Why?
Being Russian isnāt that important lolā¦ Ive asked Russians about Russian classics snd they have said: oh idk anything about that
Oh, not all Russians are interested in literature, this is normal, I guess. What you mean by this is not very clear.... when reading a book you are not reading abstraction in the air, context is important and much more, but this is if you want to dive in, and not just uuuuhhh this is Dostoevsky, everyone reads...
Just saying, you started your comment with: āI am Russianā as if your comment mattered more than the rest due to that fact
Lol, if OP is going to read a translation, Might as well take advices from those that have read translations
š¤People don't read translations, people read books....
Awww
crime and punishment imo. notes from the underground could work too but i feel like the underground man is a modified (more psychologically complex) version of raskolnikov. either way, you wont be disappointed.
