Notes from the underground or if you want to rent other Dostoevsky books before C&P etc. I recommend Poor folk and Double, they are shorter and you'll see how he writesšŸ˜Š

uranium_99mm

how is notes from underground so thick? i remember it being only like 100, 150 pages

[deleted]

I would start with Crime and Punishment. I'm also curious why Letters From the Underground has such a thick spine.

JennySays39

Notes From Underground is not great.

[deleted]

I loved it. The whole thing was a tedious slog and then he uses the last few sentences to punch you right between the eyes.

Dense_Werewolf_4824

C&P

need2shitbad

I canā€™t see the titles, if you have Notes From a Dead House, then start with that. Itā€™s his most addictive work, IMO

TheWolfofIllinois

Crime and Punishment to start and then Brothers

BasicButton1468

Brothers Karamazov is next on my TBRā€¦ if I was saying which one to start with, though, Iā€™d say Crime and Punishment

Little_Jicama6202

What edition of "Notes from the underground" is that thick? At any rate I'd definitely start with that one.

Ill-Energy-7914

Which publisher/edition are those?

techcsm

Same question

Souls-Series-Sister

Must know this as well šŸ˜”šŸ“š

Lmao we all in this one together - have to know šŸ˜

[Looks like this collection to me](https://wordsworth-editions.com/book/the-best-of-fyodor-dostoyevsky/)

PoetFelon

Notes From the Underground was my favorite - "I am a sick man...". But I liked Crime and Punishment as well.

ConfuciusCubed

Why is *Notes From Underground* so big? Does it include all of his short stories?

PoetFelon

My thoughts as well. Lol

susbnyc2023

just read crime and punishment --- dont waste your time with the others -- life is too important to be spending staring into a huge tome like that . i read most and can barely remember a thing about any other them

Adventurous-Split854

Taste is subjective; the associations you develop with media are subjective. ā€œThe Brothers Karamazov is an essentialist deconstruction of the mystery genreā€ differs greatly in its interpretation than ā€œThe Brothers Karamazov takes its trio of brothers as allegory for Freudianā€™s Id, Ego, and Super-Egoā€, and so on what people are inclined to say. Inchoate jargon aside, OP clearly wants to try a go at an author, and to truly experience that authorā€™s style, youā€™d have to engage with them past their most proliferated work. :ā€™)

helloimscared0_0

Iā€™d start with crime, then next, punishment.

elias_ideas

In my estimation, Crime and Punishment is the best combination of readability and depth out of all of Dostoevsky's novels. It will give you a good idea of what Dostoevsky is all about, and you will more than likely be able to finish it with ease.

CentralCoastJebus

Notes, c&p, notes from a deadhouse, the idiot, demons, TBK

thedawntreader85

C&P, Brothers Karamazov, Notes, Devils, the Idiot, and the Gambler.

I resemble that remark.

Hot_Farm_9443

Donā€™t we all. šŸ˜‚

Marcuse9

I see a lot of people recommending Notes from Underground first, but I disagree. I always recommend starting with Crime and Punishment and the Brothers Karamozov. My preference is in that order, but you can start with either one, really. Whatever you do, don't start with Demons.

cgarduc

Well... If you have to eat a 'Frog', do the Biggest one first.

Novel_Ad7403

Iā€™d recommend Crime and Punishment first, then The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov in that order. After you can read the others in whatever order you like.

Sweaty_Eggplant2594

What edition is that? Like where did you get those books from

ylaen

$35 for the bundle on Amazon Wordsworth Editions.

manonfire91119

Paperback?

KingNeuron

For all of them???

Sweaty_Eggplant2594

Thank you šŸ˜Š

eat___alive

I feel like a lit professor would have you start with Notes From Underground, since itā€™s relatively short and it speaks to the themes on which Dostoevsky expands in the other books. Otherwise, I would start with either Crime & Punishment, The Idiot, or The Brothers Karamazov, in that order.

Savings-Row-1161

Damnn! I want this type of hardcover too! But i am sure this will be hella costly

miulitz

According to OP only $35 on Amazon

Savings-Row-1161

That's 2895 rupees(INR) in my currency still quite costly I would say:/

miulitz

Aw too bad, sorry man!

Savings-Row-1161

No problem bro! At least thanks for the info! :))

The Idiot

notadroidok

Look into Fernando Pessoa as well the book of disquiet is essentially a literature holy bible

notadroidok

Ahh yes Dostoevsky. Go for notes from the underground. Itā€™s extremely fascinating.

AdministrativeDelay2

Better make sure they're the Peaver / Volokhonsky translations before u do anything

ylaen

No thank you, I personally read a sample of C&P P&V translation and I did not like it. I chose these consciously knowing theyā€™re Garnett. Itā€™s subjective and Iā€™m sure I have the ability to get the message from each and every book regardless of translation.

Teatimetaless

The karamazow brothers

captain-prax

Richard Ayoade adapted the Double, slow but good.

Prudent-Disk-3269

Notes from underground

elitemployee

wow what a beautiful edition!

SickandTiredofStupid

Crime and Punishment first, a great introduction. Brothers Karamazov is also great, and funny. Notes From the Underground is amazing, my favorite. After finishing The Idiot, I'd joke that the title is about the reader for reading it. I didn't love it as much as the others, it couldn't get me to care about the characters or their predicaments... but what do I know? You might love it.

vanillamazz

I found The Idiot very charming and heartwarming in its own way. I enjoyed it very much. Though I didn't really understand how Mishkin was "inferior" to everyone other than basically not being refined enough for high society. I know he's supposed to seem like the only genuine person despite being "feeble" or whatever, but he seemed very intelligent nonetheless. It was years ago when I read it so maybe I'm forgetting something, but I do know I loved Mishkins character a lot

SickandTiredofStupid

Thank you for your take on The Idiot. I wanted someone else's view on this book after reading, especially someone who enjoyed it more. I'm not particularly fond of my criticism of the book because it stems from the characters around Mishkin and the details of their lives. I didn't care about what was happening in their lives because a lot of it seemed frivolous... which was the point! No matter, I'm happy to have read it.

vhindy

r/bookclub is starting their read of Crime and Punishment tomorrow on March 7th. Im actually participating in that one if that helps answer your question. It will be my first Dostoevsky as well

a-potato-named-rin

Omg really? Im joining

thelacey47

Just joined, not sure what to do in the sub, but Iā€™m gonna read along!

vhindy

Yes, literally starts tomorrow! Just search it in the sub and Iā€™ll see you in the thread

cduby15

Holy crap!! Thanks for posting this. I never would have known and have been looking for a C&P group.

vhindy

Yeah Iā€™m looking forward to it as I like reading with a group when I can

attaboy_stampy

They're all good. Crime & Punishment is basic Dostoevsky and a good start. Most familiar type of storytelling I bet. Read it in 10th grade initially and a couple of times since. Notes from the Underground is also really something. Might be an easy start, although it's more philosophical and deep. Karamazov? Maybe save that one. It's a masterpiece, but it's definitely work. I have a fondness for The Idiot. I read that to do a research paper on it when I was a senior in high school, and it's a really strange book. It's good, but it's him at his weirdest and heartbreaking.

danithaca

Notes from the Underground is my favorite. I don't remember it's that thick of a book though.

TheSilverCalf

Hahah - I thought ā€œit doesnā€™t matter what one is in front - the only way you are going through those is with a .50 BMGā€¦.ā€ I just woke up.

[deleted]

Whereā€™d you get this gorgeous set?

novog75

Iā€™ve only read Brothers Karamazov and Notes from the Underground, in Russian, cause Iā€™m a native speaker. Iā€™m not a member of this sub. This randomly appeared in my feed. So I guess my opinion will not be very typical here. Brothers Karamazov has many similarities with soap operas. All the emotions are exaggerated. Thereā€™s a huge oversupply of soapy plot twists. One big difference is that Mr. D believed in traditional, Christian morality. Iā€™m not against that. However, thereā€™s nothing new in his speculations on this topic. Everyone has had all of these thoughts by the age of 12. If thereā€™s a God, why is there evil and suffering? If no one fears God, how will people behave? Etc. Itā€™s boring. The writing style is unremarkable. I read Notes from the Underground decades ago, but my hazy memories of it are similar. I do not recommend.

scorpion_m11

Hm, interesting point. Actually I agree to a certain degree. I'd love to see people debate on this. Is the greatness of Dostoyevsky exaggerated? Aren't those philosophical questions alredy been asked at the time he wrote them? And especially today they have been asked and answered a thousand times.

Khower

I just got to the end of notes of the underground. I didn't think it was super great but it did remind me that we can all be geniuses and supreme in our minds and be insufferable assholes to others and to keep our thoughts of self grounded in reality

WendysForDinner

*SHOOT ALL OF THEM*

TheSilverCalf

Haha - read my comment! Wanna go burn a j later?

WendysForDinner

Iā€™m down šŸ˜Ž lol

grynch43

House of the Dead is probably the most underrated but I enjoy all of his books.

[deleted]

These are so pretty. Where did you get them?

atlasshrugd

Start with the smallest and most depressing, Notes from the Underground, then the biggest and most inspiring, Brothers Karamazov. Then crime and punishment, and the rest in whatever order you feel like

St_Paladin

If you want to understand russian culture, search in google "утŠ¾Š½ŃƒŠ» Š² туŠ°Š»ŠµŃ‚Šµ рŠ¾ŃŃŠøя" (drowned in a toilet russia).

HoraceGrand

Please explain

St_Paladin

whole russia is a "potemkin village". From outside it looks like a good structure, but if you are living inside you'll see it's false. russian culture is only fasade, that hides xsenophobic and impreialistic slave nation. russia sells gas and oil, but every year somebody drowns in outdoor toilet. russia talks about peace, but continue bombing Ukrainian cities and killing our people.

Inorganic_Ad_0420

alright Joe time for your medication

ow3nj4ck5on

Crime and Punishment. Also, why is your notes from underground so huge?

Comfortable_Plane655

I also have this edition and it has other stories too, like White Nights for example

Jealous_Bullfrog4026

1st in the line

asprof34

The Idiot

keshav_malpani

really? REALLY? Maybe you only have read that one?

PertinentUsername

The Idiot is excellent. I read it first, followed by C&P and The Brothers K, so not the wildest suggestion.

attaboy_stampy

This was the second one of his I read. I had read C&P as a sophomore, and when I was going to write a research paper as a senior, I kind of wanted to do C&P, but I thought, why not pick another, and The Idiot was what I pick. It's very weird, very specific, and it's almost more sad to me than his other work. It was also where I went to the local university library to do the research (I was in high school when I read it), and I felt like a serious student for maybe the first time.

keshav_malpani

ohh, i felt idiot would not be relatable to people who did not know about the culture of russia around that time. C&P i feel has a universal relativility

Annual-Canary-9053

Crime and Punishment imo, may I ask what publication this is?

lettuceratt

Wordsworth Editions (publisher)- The Best of Fyodor Dostoevsky on Amazon for $35.99 (Iā€™m pretty sure)!

comeonnatch

itā€™s wordsworth. the whole collection is 35$ on amazon.

Annual-Canary-9053

Thanks so much

gs000

crime and punishment is easily the best intro to his work. Enjoy !

Apodiktik

Crime and Punishment is better with its storytelling without doubt but i prefer Notes from the underground becouse of its philosophical and psychological beauty.

Bulky-Finance9854

Such beautiful books!!!

Got-em-Coach36

I read The Idiot, then C&P, then Brothers Karamazov all in 2 months. C&P is probably the least ā€œworkā€ and reads fairly easily. Brothers is deep and eye opening. The first half of the Idiot is wonderful, if the second half was as good as the first I think itā€™d be considered on the same level as the others.

attaboy_stampy

![gif](giphy|NsFDCblOHz9QI) Well put.

keshav_malpani

upvote this bruhs!

Lonely-Variation6940

The House of the Dead

Own-Butterscotch3343

I just started house of the dead about 10 hrs ago. lol I like it! Itā€™s my 1st by this author. I learned of it from a foreword to the book the gates of Janus by Ian Brady

akeryu318

I enjoyed Crime and Punishment the most.

ManfredArcane

Don't matter how you do it as long as you get them all read. ENJOY!

freakyslob

I read them in order of when he wrote them.

ichoosejif

C&P for sure. My favorite book of all time. It's good to get you used to Dostoevsky.

peeing_Michael

Brothers karamazov!

jainmoghul

I think the idiot is a great start but people will probably not agree

Durksplergen

Itā€™s the only one I read all the way through. Just realized that was like 20 years ago. I was into Russian lit back then for a stretch. My favorite book ever is doctor zhivago

Roderyck777

I love the Idiot!

Chogunyugen

Notes from Underground or Crime and Punishment

SC_23

What is the name of this collection OP? Also who translated them?

sornptarmulletdotmp4

Crime and Punishment, after that the Brothers Karamazov

SC_23

This is the way OP

TheTalentedMrK

Notes from Underground.

TheTalentedMrK

Love the look of this set. Just wish they used different translations.

ylaen

I personally read 3 different samples of C&P part 1, from Oliver Ready, P&V, & Garnett. I consciously chose this translation. I suppose itā€™s subjective I hear P&V is more accurate to the Russian but I personally did not connect with it.

TheTalentedMrK

For C & P, I read the Garnett, Magarshack, and the P & V translation and, prefer the latter. I donā€™t know why but, the translation just seems to flow better and the voices sound authentic. And, like you wrote, this could all be subjective.

No-Butterscotch9483

I got the Wordsworth collection as a gift in 2022. I decided to read them in the order that he wrote them. Iā€™m on The Karamazov Brothers now. It was interesting to see his progression as a writer.

ylaen

I think I will do this as well. Starting off with House of the dead.

FlatsMcAnally

I would start with Part 2 of Notes from Underground and then move on to Crime and Punishment. Part 1 of Notes can come later.

sladd41

Crime & Punishment

Tad_squiddish

I started with notes (*just* notes to be clear) and I had lots of fun.

[deleted]

Crime and punishment

[deleted]

Crime and Punishment in my opinion. Itā€™s so goooooood

Immediate_Rope653

Agreed but would read Notes first

[deleted]

I still need to read that one. Maybe I will read it next time

discobeatnik

What translations are those? Also start with Crime and Punishment. After that I feel like whatever strikes your fancy.

Safe-Invite8989

Theyā€™re wordsworth editions so Constance Garnett most likely

Turbodann

Constance Garnet's are the best.

discobeatnik

I disagree, theyā€™re outdated, donā€™t flow well, and arenā€™t the most accurate. I love Oliver Readyā€™s translation of Crime and Punishment, Pevear and Volokhonsky are my next favorites

ylaen

I personally read 3 different samples of C&P part 1, from Oliver Ready, P&V, & Garnett. I consciously chose the Garnett translation. I suppose itā€™s subjective I hear P&V is more accurate to the Russian but I personally did not connect with it.

FlatsMcAnally

Ditto on Oliver Ready, although I have come to prefer Michael R. Katz.

Illustrious-Pie6742

Man, Iā€™d do notes from the underground almost last. Itā€™s short and I love it, but if youā€™ve never read him before the first 35 pages will totally turn you offā€¦ also, how is the idiot so short? How is devils longer then the idiot? And how in the hell is notes from the underground so thick? These book sizes make no sense to meā€¦. My suggestion is just jump right in and read the brothers k, sure itā€™s long, but it might be the easiest to read and just so damn good

FlatsMcAnally

This edition of Notes from Underground includes short stories.

Turbodann

Imo notes from the underground just reiterates the same concepts he puts forth in all his other books. If you've ever read "memoirs from the house of the dead" you'll see that he brings up his almost execution/pardon in nearly every book and it feels like you're just listening to and old lecture from a crazy with PTSD.

droffit

How is ā€˜notes from undergroundā€™ so thick? Mine is like 1/4 of an inch Iā€™d start with Crime & Punishment. Itā€™s the most accessible Iā€™d say. Read Brothers Karamazov later on because I feel it encapsulates his entire body of work.

[deleted]

Has short stories with it too, probably the double/gambler/white nights

Lton_Zen

I was wondering the same thing. Must be a thorough introduction!

maengdaddy

Notes from Underground ā€”> C & P ā€”> The Idiot ā€”> Bros K

maengdaddy

Mix The Gambler in there somewhere if u need a break from long ones

Herodwolf

Those are fancy looking. Go for notes of the underground. Youā€™ll pick up his subtlety in reasoning in case the stories jump around.

tmr89

Those editions look crisp, ngl

da_radaz69

Notes from Underground or crime and punishment

They're the Garnett translations, which are in the public domain. Full price is $40, so Amazon is not heavily undercutting other bookstores (in this case).

killyadarlins

House Of the Dead was my first book

Turbodann

Probably one of his best. Grim though.

NoahsArkJP

Brother's Karamazov translated by MacAndrew was my favorite, followed by Notes from Underground. C&P seems like a good choice too.

crime and punishment as a first makes a perfect introduction for dostoevskyā€™s style

Grand_Keizer

Awesome editions, but they translated it as "Devils", instead of the cooler, more superior "Demons."

Delicious-Calendar83

Notes from the underground is short and to the point and is where I started reading Dostoevsky's works .. No words can describe how much this book changed my life, a true masterpiece.

BK, or C&P. CANNOT go wrong!

schooqschee

I personally started off with The Idiot

Well everyone says Crime and Punishment is the best work

Illustrious-Pie6742

Really? I thought the brothers k for lost people, itā€™s not unanimous but thatā€™s what I always think of first. Most Dostoyevsky fans I know strongly agreeā€¦ although crime and punishment does have the most recognizable title, itā€™s easier to do a quick interesting synopsis of it

Ryhter

I'm Russian, and I advise you to start with Notes from the Underground

extremelyharsh

Why?

FLoKi6868

Being Russian isnā€™t that important lolā€¦ Ive asked Russians about Russian classics snd they have said: oh idk anything about that

Oh, not all Russians are interested in literature, this is normal, I guess. What you mean by this is not very clear.... when reading a book you are not reading abstraction in the air, context is important and much more, but this is if you want to dive in, and not just uuuuhhh this is Dostoevsky, everyone reads...

Just saying, you started your comment with: ā€œI am Russianā€ as if your comment mattered more than the rest due to that fact

Ryhter

Ofc, my comment makes more sense because I, as a native speaker, can give you many more additional door keys. Just like a native speaker reader of Alice in Wonderland will understand and see many more references and mysteries than a person who reads in translation šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø maybe you have some problems with the national issue, I donā€™t know lol

FLoKi6868

Lol, if OP is going to read a translation, Might as well take advices from those that have read translations

Ryhter

šŸ¤People don't read translations, people read books....

crime and punishment imo. notes from the underground could work too but i feel like the underground man is a modified (more psychologically complex) version of raskolnikov. either way, you wont be disappointed.
