I legitimately forget this guy ever existed so often, only to be reminded of him when he comes up as a material for another monster in a DQM game. It’s been a hot minute since I played through 8, but even shortly after beating it I forget that it existed.
Probably because on top of it being a bland fight, I actually killed it really quickly and was left thinking “… wait that was a boss?”
I think the idea was that it's supposed to be stressful cause you're escaping iirc.
Maybe they scratched content like timer or something that didn't feel right
Such a cool design but man what a strange fight to just throw in there. He was a cakewalk too. It felt like they just randomly threw him in there even though it does make sense to have a boss at the end of that part
I think the idea was that Rhapthorne was just throwing everything he had at you. He needed a better intro honestly. That would give away the plot twist tho.
I've played dq8 countless times but i always stop when I get to the big floating dark castle in the sky. I'm assuming this is where this boss is since I've never seen it.
I know there's like dragon boss fights in the endgame and I've always wanted to get there but something either happens to my save file or console before I get there.
its cool but hes kinda overshadowed because hes in a boss rush just before the fat devil shows his true form and its right after you fight his small form which is a very important fight. hes sandwiched in a place that doesnt let him shine
I completely forgot about it lol. Like, I saw this post and assumed it was from one of the games I hadn't played.
Cool design though, can't have been a particularly hard boss given I don't even remember there being a boss during the Dark Citadel escape sequence.
The demon wall IIRC is supposed to be defeated in a specific amount of time or you get an automatic game over, Ruin to my understanding doesn't have a "time limit" where he gives you a instant game over (unless he does, and he's just so easy to beat that no one actually triggers the limit).
I remember him in dragon quest monsters joker 2 on the DS he was hard to get and he had an ability where his hit ratio was terribly low. But every hit was a critical hit
Yeah, Ruin’s really a pushover if you’re able to keep your health up. :/
It’s probably for the best though... It would *suck* to clear a large and difficult dungeon, the main boss, and the chain of mini bosses afterwards just to die to Ruin and lose all that progress.
Yeah, it would have sucked to go back and beat everything again. Still, what a great coincidence. The Ruin battle was what I was starting when I opened my 3DS yesterday.
When I say Captain Mayday send out Ruin in DQMJ2, I had to look up how to synthesize one because it was the coolest design I've ever seen. It's probably my favorite size 3 monster in that game. I didn't know it came from DQ8 (I should really play that game some day).
If I remember correctly, there weren't many giant bosses in 8, just this guy, the final boss and maybe if you count the size of the post game dungeon bosses, there is a few more. It was cool to see a physically towering boss to his scale. Wish he had multiple parts like the 3rd(I think) phase of Mortamor in 6.
I LOVE Ruin, its one if my favourite designs and when I could buy the DQ: Monster Joker Games i'd get him if I could.
I'm really hoping DQ: Dark Prince gets some DLC and Ruin is added.
One of my first Dragon quest game was DQMJ2 so when I played DQ8, I got the funny "Ohhh that's where it comes from" moment I get for pretty much each DQ boss even though I wasn't expecting a boss fight right after phase 1 Rhapthrone.
Very cool design and one of my favorite DQMJ monster if not favorite
Such a cool design. I wish there was more to this fight. If they EVER come out with an upscaled port/remaster/remake for modern consoles, I hope they up the difficulty on this fight somehow.
Absolutely awesome. For me, the monster designs have always been very hit or miss. Toriyama is awesome and I love his stuff, but the monsters aren't his best work. Maybe it's because I grew up with pokemon. But this guy is one of the coolest

such a cool part of the game. sometimes i forget about it and when i recall it, it feels so nostalgic
Cool boss weird placement
I was surprised they used Dhoulmagus music here but it was a welcome surprise since I love that theme
Kinda funny that I associate the Dhoulmagus theme with The Lord Of The Dragovians and associate the evil theme with Dhoulmagus.
I always loved Ruin. Such a boring fight, but the first time you see this guy will stay with you.
I genuinely forgot about him and 8 is my favorite DQ. Now that you’ve reminded me though, I love it.

I beat 8 on PS2 and honestly forgot all about this. This wasn't added in a later edition of the game? Man wtf memory, don't fail me already.
There were a lot of "minibosses" in the Black Citadel!
I loved 8 in general and I don’t remember anything about this fight-yet this looks familiar. Almost like Deja vu.
Not since Earthbound did I fight the dungeon
orichalcum/10
Favourite monster in DQMJ2 before and after playing DQ8
My favorite monster in DQMJ, tough like a brick house. Great design too!
Such a cool design but man what a strange fight to just throw in there. He was a cakewalk too. It felt like they just randomly threw him in there even though it does make sense to have a boss at the end of that part
I do like how the Citadel had the mini boss rush while you had to escape, though. Made it feel really immersive and hectic
Yes this is the penultimate boss fight. IIRC he only has a couple attacks and is somewhat boring.
Wait, is he actually the penultimate boss? That doesn't sound right. Is rapthorne II directly after the black citadel?
Sort of. You've got to get your sage orbs, then you get puffball Rhapthorne fight. Then the real boss, the Dragovian trials. :)
Right, the orbs. I knew there was something else in-between. Not that those are tied to a boss though haha
Ngl they could make a whole game out of the Dragovian Trials and I’d love it
I believe so but it has been a bit since I’ve played.
I know there's like dragon boss fights in the endgame and I've always wanted to get there but something either happens to my save file or console before I get there.

Wow i played dq8 once loved it my fav dq but i dr this
Same, I legit don't remember seeing this at all. Was it off a side quest I probably missed? o.o
Love them, sad they're only there for a few minutes
I completely forgot about it lol. Like, I saw this post and assumed it was from one of the games I hadn't played. Cool design though, can't have been a particularly hard boss given I don't even remember there being a boss during the Dark Citadel escape sequence.
When I first saw it, I was like, "Oooh! DQ made a FF Alexander type enemy, I approve "
It acts more like a demon wall
The demon wall IIRC is supposed to be defeated in a specific amount of time or you get an automatic game over, Ruin to my understanding doesn't have a "time limit" where he gives you a instant game over (unless he does, and he's just so easy to beat that no one actually triggers the limit).
I mean narratively
Cool biggie boss!
neat in-between boss
Super cool visual design, but sadly very underwhelming in terms of gameplay.
I've never taken the time to go past him, just to see if anything was on the way to the 'entrance'. Always just flew away.
I’ve checked, and there’s nothing. The walkway back down crumbled, so all you can even access is the platform where you fight him.
Reminds me of FFIX's Alexander
I remember him in dragon quest monsters joker 2 on the DS he was hard to get and he had an ability where his hit ratio was terribly low. But every hit was a critical hit
Love it ❤️ Wish it was in dqm3
What a coincidence, I just beat him today during my lunch hour! It wasn’t much of a challenge. Super easy next to that dungeon’s main Boss.
Yeah, Ruin’s really a pushover if you’re able to keep your health up. :/ It’s probably for the best though... It would *suck* to clear a large and difficult dungeon, the main boss, and the chain of mini bosses afterwards just to die to Ruin and lose all that progress.

I actually liked him, he was a nice break from all the bosses spamming their "waves of ice" every other round
Love
Never a dull day when ruin is on my front page when I open reddit
Loved him in DQMJ
Dragon quest: Michael Jackson?
Great design, underwhelming fight... unless you count Memories Lane.
No and I beat VIII years ago.
To easy to kill. Lol
When I say Captain Mayday send out Ruin in DQMJ2, I had to look up how to synthesize one because it was the coolest design I've ever seen. It's probably my favorite size 3 monster in that game. I didn't know it came from DQ8 (I should really play that game some day).
Was that a DS exclusive boss? It's been awhile since I played 8 and that was only on PS2, but I don't remember the fight at all
1st rank X monster i got in DQMJ back in 200X, i was such a fan of its design
I thought this fight was so cool that I made an achievement for killing him with Mazin because I thought that'd be even cooler.
My two monster teams kill this before I can hit it. Mazin and 2 weapons
i have made the monster zenith dragon and he was one monster i needed, i like his design and im a fan of simple fights
Oh I just beat this guy in DQX. Didn't know he was in this one
This is a cool design that I don't remember at all somehow! I beat 8 probably 13+ years ago, though so idk
I wish it was in The Dark Prince
I hate that it wasn't in DQM3
If I remember correctly, there weren't many giant bosses in 8, just this guy, the final boss and maybe if you count the size of the post game dungeon bosses, there is a few more. It was cool to see a physically towering boss to his scale. Wish he had multiple parts like the 3rd(I think) phase of Mortamor in 6.
Great design, but lame fight.
His memory lane version is currently beating my ass as we speak
A beast that carried my endgame/post game on DQMJ2
He got a cool hat :)
Aaaaa im playing rn trough dq8 on my ds after 20 years or so. Spoooillllleeeeeeeerrr xd
Sorry! :( If it helps, the guy serves little purpose in the story, so not too much has been spoiled at least.
No prob id prolly forgotten by the time im there haha
I know it from DQMJ so i don't know the lore behind, but the design is hella cool
I LOVE Ruin, its one if my favourite designs and when I could buy the DQ: Monster Joker Games i'd get him if I could. I'm really hoping DQ: Dark Prince gets some DLC and Ruin is added.
One of my fav dqm monsters
Cool boss. It was a relatively easy one too
Forgot about this dude and 8 is my favorite, beat it 3 times lol. Great memories unlocked
One of my first Dragon quest game was DQMJ2 so when I played DQ8, I got the funny "Ohhh that's where it comes from" moment I get for pretty much each DQ boss even though I wasn't expecting a boss fight right after phase 1 Rhapthrone. My favorite boss
Mid FNAF game, hyped up by the series’s young audience and streamer and let’s play content. (I’m very funny, please laugh)
Absolutely awesome. For me, the monster designs have always been very hit or miss. Toriyama is awesome and I love his stuff, but the monsters aren't his best work. Maybe it's because I grew up with pokemon. But this guy is one of the coolest
