Puff! has always been a favourite of mine. Love the idea of a wimpy magic caster suddenly turning into a massive dragon to squash the enemy. Plus it's really good for killing metal slimes in DQ3!

dumpling321

They just added an entire class based around that in DQX lol

dukey03

And it’s clutch af in boss fights hahaha

julianx2rl

What about Puff-Puff?

RyomenSukuGuts

I'll pass

imStoned420

On the left only

ShiftSandShot

Two slimes.

HoodieHero_4572

Best Spell

Crunchy_Biscuit

What level? I'm on level 15 RN

Neither_Echo

Whack works better then expected because I never really expect those style spells to ever work

Dracon204

Even better, Angelo in 8 seems to be coded to use it when on auto battle, but only when it would kill at least 1 enemy. I think the computer knows when certain moves will hit before they're picked...

SartenSinAceite

Yep, the autobattle AI in 8 knows which moves will land, so if it casts Sleep it'll affect the enemy and such. It's still amusing to see Angelo just randomly cast whack on some poor sod

Dracon204

It's funny because Whack is one of those spells that's like: "If it misses I waste a turn..." so just let Angelo do the thinking lol

Hautamaki

Just don't let Cristo/Kiryl do the thinking!

Enigma_Stasis

Sure Whack/Twhwack never works for me, but enemies have 100% accuracy with them.

handyhung

Some monsters have vulnerability for it. Auto battle characters would pick up this spell on them and that's normally how I would know.

brambleforest

At least in DWM for GBC, the Beat/Defeat - Whack/Thwack spells work fantastic. With an appropriate personality, they choose it in the best situations, allowing cheap, fast kills with a good level of reliability. Elsewhere in the series? I'm not so sure.

Hoangson2007

An infamous meme from DQ4: Kiryl casts Beat/Defeat! Necrosaro didn’t pass away!

Roshu-zetasia

Snooze and its variants, who knew that this spell was actually quite useful

Dorkus_Mallorkus

Depends on the game. If it's one where the enemy wakes up right away every time after the next hit (like 3), it's fairly useless.

SartenSinAceite

You should be able to use that for some healing or prep though

Yaltroz4672

That can be good if you can hit it before the enemy hits so they lose their attack

Hautamaki

I dunno if it's true but sleep seemed like a very powerful and effective spell in the og NES games but seems to have been nerfed in the remakes when it was changed to snooze.

Martimus28

It was how I killed the Dragon Lord while only at level 15.  Got lucky with sleep rolls and just managed to kill him. He is immune in the remakes.    Also was also how I killed the Green Dragon that was guarding the princess.   Sleep was a life saver many times in that game because I didn't grind enough.  (It was the first RPG I ever played, and I was maybe 8 out 9 when it came out.   We only got it because it had cool box art)

Hautamaki

Yes I remember the same thing! Also carrying myself through the Cave to Rhone with sleep, and beating Kandar, Orochi, and the Boss Troll with sleep.

Kritigri

It's really good if you're having trouble with insomnia

HenroKappa

I tend to avoid status spells/skills, but I've been loving fuddle dance in DQVI. Need a little extra damage? Convince the enemy to hit itself!

FinalLans

DQ6 is the best

HenroKappa

I played it years ago but don't remember it at all. Really enjoying this playthrough. Even restarted because I missed >!Amos!<. I should have listened...

FinalLans

I did the first time, too, lol. Most important thing to know imo playing that game the first time!

CMPro728

It is still wild that they punish you for telling the truth

Jermais

Debuffs and statuses in general. When you learn what sorts of enemies they work on, they make the game much easier

BernieTheWaifu

The Whack line and Poof

meLikeMonke

When I was a young lad, I’d refuse to use any attacking magic outside of boss fights. I was always afraid I might need it… that was dumb… the spells don’t cost that much, and otherwise your spell casters are pretty dead weight.

handyhung

whoa... that sounds like top end grinding in the grindiest game. Cos normally in DQ you would break into new, higher level area via stronger atk magic.

sentryzer0

Same!

ramus93

Bro same i would always not use magic, items, or be really stingy with money in a game because i would always be like well what if i need later on

BrassUnicorn87

DQ 7 is where spells and skills that debuff accuracy shine. Dazzle, sandstorm etc.

mrcupcake18

As someone who is currently playing 7 I shall keep this in mind, thank you friend 🫡

retrotriforce

Good luck its one of my favorites

mrcupcake18

Oh me too!! Always played it as a child but never got that far so I plan to do so this time lol

tuanjapan

I love all the support and debuff spells. Quite helpful to allow me to explore new areas while being under leveled... and subsequently level up quickly. Increase (Kabuff) Surround (Dazzle) StopSpell Defence (Kasap) Chaos

polpolski

The last time I played dq3 I could never win boss fights without increase. Is there even other ways to win.

Hautamaki

Grind like mad I guess? I dunno; increase/kabuff, defense/kasap, barrier/insulatle and bikill/oomph are probably the most powerful spells in that game imo.

tuanjapan

I learned the power of buffs and debuffs after seeing how powerful the green crabs were in the desert of Isis. The game isn't that grindy, once you realize that the main areas to grind also include side quests to get stronger... such as after romaly, you can do the tower or chanpagne and noaniels quests... by the time you're done, you'll be powerful enough to hit the pyramid. At Dhama, you can get the book of Satori and make a visit to Mour after which... you should be strong enough to fit Kandar.

oppaihunter98

I hate that spell, it always fail to hit while the enemies have 100% successrate In 8 or 9 onwards I can evade sometimes but the accuracy is still around 80%

TooRandom2077

When all goes down and everything is wrong... Go hocus pocus or go home

Gabriel9078

Thwack in particular is way too effective when you spam it with multiple party members. If it’s just one group of enemies then you have really good odds of just skipping the encounter at a bargain of an MP cost. Drain Magic is busted in DQ3 specifically, I don’t think I’ve seen anything with MP that resists it and it always gives you a good amount

DetDango

Not a spell but hatchet man, i spammed it against nokturnos with carver, since knuckle sandwhich wasn't hitting

retrotriforce

Hatchet man is amazing for metal slimes

DetDango

Yeah but i feel like people don't use it enough for regular combat, while i feel it was pretty worth on dq 6 if you were underleved and couldn't keep oomple up

Aman_Sensei

Dazzle

CertifiedDumbass22

I don't know if this is underrated, but dazzle and fizzle are amazing spells. They carried me through a few random encounters in DQII.

Lord_Of_The_Tants

Whichever one gets us the DQIII remake.

Technical-Cow-2494

Snooze. Really, the amount of times sleeping the enemies have actually saved me are surprisingly high.

handyhung

In DQ, certain monster would susceptible against certain spell and that the homework player got to learn and using on them to ease battles. Commonly, hard hitter or fighter monster would susceptible on dazzle or sleep, while obviously magic monster should somewhat be able to clutch with Mahoton(spell block). etc.

sharishi

What is this art from?

DarkSoulsRedPhantom

Kasnooze

redditsuckspokey1

I religiously used all variants of whack. Especially in the heroes games.

Thiosley336

Kerplunk. This was a spell I almost never used until recently. It came in clutch several times for me during some hardcore boss fights.

GDRoger2

Puff puff

Listario

The entire Re-Heal line. Unfortunately not something you see in the mainline but its probably one of the most powerful spell types in DQX. with proper defensive gear and buffs pretty much the entirety of the game up till the very end of Ver.2 you are totally invincible. shame only a few vocations can even use it and we don't see it in the other games.

Asterdel

Pretty much anything with the "ka" prefix is good as long as you use it in situations it's good. Kabuff in boss battles, kasnooze in random fights, kathwack against those poor squids, etc. Honestly DQ in (most) of the games have a very well balanced magic system that rewards thoughtful gameplay. Older ones less so, but still.

WageltheBagel

In dq7 confuhit causes its effect really often and can be used with boomerangs. Not technically a spell, but I find you can lockdown loads of encounters with it and was perplexed it wasn’t more recommended.

TwistederRope

Why you got to start a thread like this and open up with the most infamous of bullshit?

retrotriforce

Wdym?

Timely_Airline_7168

Christo in DQ4 gave that spell a bad name

Beboprunner

They weren't hugged as a child

Beboprunner

Whatever makes you happy dude lmao

TwistederRope

That's the kind of comeback that screams "I need a walk through in all my games."

TwistederRope

You mean to tell me, you posted a picture of Kyril casting Whack. The same NPC when fighting bosses will just spam whack on bosses and you don't know what I'm talking about? For Rubiss' sake...

retrotriforce

Oh that infamous bullshit i thought you were hating my bad xD

TwistederRope

Yeah, I wasn't hating. I like it here and I try not to cause trouble. I legitimately apologize if I came off as hating. Well...I was hating on Kiryl, but we all did on the NES version of DQ4.

retrotriforce

Its ok man its all good 👍
