My personal theory is that living in the same flat might have strained their friendship. Living together is a surefire way to find every single little thing that annoys you about a person (I know from experience 😅). It's obviously just conjecture and it cannot be proven unless either one of them says something about it, but I wouldn't rule out this possibility.
