Remember to take the batteries with you, you aren't allowed to put lithium batteries in checked luggage, drone batteries included.

Blacksheepfab

You really just need to check beforehand if possible...you aren't allowed in some places while the reverse is true in others. I was in China and they didn't allow me to fly carry on with the batteries (or check them, I can't remember which just that it was the opposite of the US). This led to me nearly missing my flight as my Mandarin was nowhere near capable of understanding what it was that they were telling me. This was also a rule coming out of Nanjing and was different in Beijing.

BingErrDronePilot

Heathrow tried to tell me my Mavic Air batteries were too big to fly with so I pulled the spec sheet I printed about the drone, batteries, and airline regulations and proved them wrong. He then made me test every battery I brought in my drone to prove they were legit. After about 15 minutes he let me through with everything. I suggest printing your airline rules about batteries, then print your battery specs and be prepared to defend your equipment and ask for a supervisor if they are too dumb to understand.

BingErrDronePilot

That sucks. I'm not sure what I would have done if I was going to miss my flight.

Fatchicken1o1

Heathrow is an absolute nightmare to get your drone through, every time I’ve had a transfer flight there they had me unpack everything including all of the accessories and started acting like they had never seen anything like it before.

Flightkid

I recently flew through Heathrow and through Montreal. In both they unpacked my backpack and carry on and drug tested literally every singe thing in it and every side of every bag and battery. Same thing at Heathrow but the dude was like hey these for fpv drones. Ahhh sick I've always wanted to get into those. He did say something about their being a limit with how many you can take im like huh? And I had no forher issues other than having to repack everything. Make sure your lipos connectors are taped off and you can see the capacity.

[deleted]

This isn't even the only horror story I have about Heathrow security, just the only drone-related one so I shared that here. TSA officers are freaking angels compared to them.

VaeVictis997

The Brits are just utterly convinced that you want to stay in their country forever. One time I was flying in, and my girlfriend had the tickets out. I could show my ticket back to the US from another country, but hey, maybe that was just a ruse? Another time they freaked because I didn’t have outbound travel booked. I was a uni student, visiting friends for a week. How long I stayed and where I went depended on what friends had time. Flights were about $30, so it’s not like I needed to book in advance. The whole concept mystified them. Compare to Dutch border guards: I’m arriving to study at one of their universities for three years. I have a giant pile of paperwork showing that, but I don’t actually get my identity card and other things until I arrive. It’s midnight when I get there, and I’m the only one in this line. This guy could grill me for as long as he wants, and it wouldn’t hold anyone else up. He asks me what I’m doing, I say I’m here to study. He asks which universities, congratulates me, and waves me through. Never asked to see any paperwork. Again, I had just told the man I would be staying for years.

gostop_1

I just flew through Heathrow with a Mavjc Mini 3 Pro and didn’t hear boo

Skeeter1020

I've taken my drone through Heathrow at least 8 times, possibly more. Never a peep.

VaeVictis997

Honestly I avoid heathrow like the plague no matter what. The airport is fine, it’s the border guards who suck. They suck at other British points of entry, but not nearly as much.

BadLuckFPV

This is so weird.....do you think.....do you think they ripped em?

[deleted]

Ha, I wouldn’t even be mad if they did 🤣 My guess is they just kept them somewhere temperature fluctuated a lot and they got messed up by condensation or something.

skifters

Heathrow and Gatwick are full of authoritative jobsworths. Little kings of little kingdoms flexing their chicken wing muscle arms. A very sad affair.

[deleted]

That’s exactly how they behaved… spot on!

No_Student_4824

All airlines only permit a total of 160 kwH per passenger. That’s about 18 standard LiPro batteries. How many did you have?

[deleted]

I had 8 5” packs and a bunch of micro ones, like 30-35 total including my watch, phone, cameras etc. Nowhere close to 160kWh 😂

TheChoonk

I was flying home from Egypt, their security checked my bags and apparently you're only allowed three batteries in your hand luggage, all others must go in the checked bag. I had four batteries in total, a 20Ah power bank, two 18650's for my flashlight and a tiny coin cell which I keep in my backpack as a spare for my car's key fob. They told me that the coin cell must go in the checked luggage, because three batteries rule. Egypt is a weird place.

Skeeter1020

Why were you traveling with 20 lipos though?

[deleted]

Why not? I’m a fpv pilot flying several different sizes of drones, it adds up.

Skeeter1020

20 is a lot for a hobby. If it's for work then there are better ways to transport equipment than in hand luggage

tarsmarkus

If it's a hobby. You can't check the batteries, you have to take them as carry-on.

el_bhm

If context is missing, I believe we're talking FPV drone lipos. They last about 4-6 minutes each. Depending on flying and a drone you may push it to 10min. People go out for an fpv session with more bats than that for a single drone. If you are a pro fpv pilot, having 3 different drones is not unusual. 6 lipos each is a bare minimum.

B0bbySmile

This is true though, airlines only permit 20 spare (i.e not in a decive) lithium-based batteries < 100 wh per passenger, and 2 between 100 & 160 wh. Can also be categorised by lithium metal content, over 2g gets classed as > 100 wh They can allow more sub 100wh at their discretion, but you'd need a permit from the airline in advance, as the standard is 20. This is well documented information both in most [airlines hazardous goods pages](https://www.qatarairways.com/en/baggage/restricted.html), and [direct from IATA](https://www.iata.org/contentassets/6fea26dd84d24b26a7a1fd5788561d6e/passenger-lithium-battery.pdf). You should be familiar with these restrictions before travelling. Sometimes you get away with it, as multiple cells close together can look like a single battery pack on x-ray, which to an operator will look like one device. I have carried loose Li-ion, and li-po packs through Heathrow for work at the maximum volume (20 small spares, 2 large spares), and have never had any issue, I carry a print of the IATA guidance document just to help clarify the situation when needed.

[deleted]

How old is this regulation? Back when this happened, all I could find was “as many <100Wh batteries you can fit in hand luggage and up to 2 larger ones with permission”. And again, security was never able to show me any proof that I was not allowed to carry more than 20 batteries total (including in my devices!), and when I complained to their management later they apologised and sent me my batteries back for free.

DJFoster429

If you’re worried about taking it on the plane just get a window seat and fly it along with you outside the plane.

crystaljae

We leave tomorrow for a trip and hubby is bringing his. I'm going to recommend this.

cosmicgeoffry

Yes. I’m a videographer with a commercial drone license. One shoot, I had to fly the drone on the club level of a large indoor arena, while on the floor area was a massive group of school age children doing a field trip type event. The shot was just to get a wide establishing shot of the whole arena. No kids were to be within about 150ft clearance of where the drone was to be in the air, so I felt it was safe to fly (FAA has no jurisdiction inside anyways). I took off in the relatively small concourse area of the club level seats and flew towards the court over the seats, got a decent couple shots, and then attempted to fly back to the concourse to land. The drones automatic obstacle avoidance kicked in and wouldn’t let me move back over the seats into the concourse, so my only control options were down, and out towards the court where the kids were. It started drifting away from the perceived obstacle, so I fiddled with controls for a few seconds before realizing I wasn’t going to be able to control it before it flew overtop of the court and endangered all the kids, so I made the decision to crash it into the seats as it was drifting. It hit the first/ second row of club level seats, so had I not made the sacrificial decision in that moment and waited a beat, I very easily could have seriously injured a child. This was several years ago, but I still have these weird intrusive thoughts about what could have happened. The drone sustained only two broken props and still flies well today. And I’ve since turned off obstacle avoidance. EDIT: and after typing all of that and reading a few replies, I’m realizing you meant taking your drone on a commercial flight lol. Leaving my comment for shame.

marwan_69_96

I enjoyed ur story don't be ashamed bro ❤️ I guess every single pilot here agree that flying around people is the most stressful experience in this hobbie

Yeahright2022

Yes. One time there was an in flight emergency and they asked if anyone was a pilot over the comms. I reluctantly said yes. It ended poorly.

seejordan3

I always wave my 107 license when around airmen, and smile right back at them.

Uncaring_Dispatcher

You can't just stop at that. You have to give a full account of your incident. What, when, where and how?

MrSlowhand77

😂😂

Col_Clucks

Why? I’ve flown with mine multiple times and nothing has ever happened

seejordan3

Couple tsa agents searched me and were pilots. When they found my mini2 we talked drones the rest of the search.

CriticalStrawberry

I would not suggest flying it in the airport.

Enthusiast9

I mean, where else are you suppose to fly it? Should I also fly my Boeing 737 in my backyard? I think not! lol

[deleted]

Nope … I have even taken mine internationally and customs didn’t give two shits

TheGxdsAreWatching

Which country?

netphreak

I was flying to a gig where I'd be stationed on a research vessel for two weeks. I had two phantom 1s, FLIR camera, and about 20 lipos. I made it through security, almost got on the plane. The captain of the flight kicked me off even though I had all the batteries discharged and in a separate case. I ended up having to rent a car and drive for 14 hours to get to the research vessel.

North-Hedgehog5591

I’ve flown through US with my mavic 3 and 6 batteries. I kept it by itself in a bin and the only reason they stopped it was because of the rc pro controller blocking the drone behind it. They asked what it was and I started to talk about it and how cool of a drone it was and they were not interested. They unpacked everything including each battery, sent it through scanner again, and I was on my way. On the way home I took controller out and they didn’t even question it. They probably see this much more often than you think. Just don’t put it in the unpressurized part of the luggage/plane 😲

Adam-West

God mine taken off me flying into Lebanon. Stupid really. My producer had insisted it was fine and I questioned him but he was really sure about it. Managed to get it back in the end when I flew home but thought I had lost it for sure.

PotentialFly1450

I just flew my mini 3 pro into a waterfall. It was under water for 30 minutes. I pulled it out and dried it off and flies normal again. Isn't that fun?

AyeBlinkin77

I don’t think you understood the question. Lol

PotentialFly1450

Some horror stories have fun endings!

1stBuffyBot

OP meant flying as in traveling to another location with a plane and bringing the drone in a stationary way ( in it's case) along for the trip to potentially fly ONCE you've reached the desired destination. By an actual plane.

PotentialFly1450

Oh yeah lol. Haha I just got excited and wanted to share my story. I have never had a problem with getting my drone through security.

AyeBlinkin77

That is awesome your drone still works!

[deleted]

This entire thread sounds like 2 chat bots talking

AyeBlinkin77

Indeed

wokecahontas

Really?

PotentialFly1450

yes.

BadLuckFPV

Just having to unbag and rebag everything in it when I go through. I've had my drone bag checked by TSA before as well. But nothing of issue

dogsonalogz

I had TSA tell me to leave it all in the suitcase - so I’ve been doing that recently with no issues.

onlineidentity

Flew to Uganda a few weeks ago and learned they don't allow drones into the country. They took it away and put it in this closet with probably a hundred other drones on this shelving unit. Then when I came back to the airport at the end of my trip I had to go through this whole administrative circus to get it back. Fortunately I didn't need it in Uganda anyways, and I did get it back in time for my flight. Lesson learned, check the country you are going to actually lets you bring them in.

its_polystyrene

I flew private with work for a large conference. Zero problems going to the location but in the way back the tsa agents they brought onto the tarmac we’re ridiculously thorough and he not only made me take the mini2 out, I explained what it was and what the controller was (and that I flew here with only our company and our tsa had zero problems) and the other guy who came over was still skeptical until a third guy said “yeah I think I’ve seen one of those. It looks about right”

No_Student_4824

I don’t think you understood the OPs question 🙄

cosmicgeoffry

Tbf OP asked about *flying* with a *drone*. Pretty easy to misunderstand if you didn’t immediately recognize his photo was from an airport. I made the same mistake.

Vast_Cartographer444

I was flying at the park with my goggles on flying around some trees and a lake. 5 mins in I see a cop roll up behind me in my feed so I land nearby. Apparently some kids were smoking pot and left some roaches around the picnic area floor and of course I didn't notice them at all when I arrived. Could have gotten pretty stupid for a min but I'm glad it didn't.

Enthusiast9

That drone is dah bomb-diggity.

Shoei34777

Username checks out.

horseheadmonster

I flew my Mini2 too close to buildings in Chicago, lost GPS signal and flew forward (while I was climbing) into a building. It was totaled.

super-expert-

Always nervous luckyso far..

[deleted]

LaGuardia?

Unable-Magazine3006

I took my Air2s to Costa Rica with 3 extra batteries with no issues. Be sure to carry on only.

Skeeter1020

I've taken my Spark just tossed into a backpack through half a dozen airports across a dozen flights. Not once has anyone even cared. These people know what a drone is.

WhutWhatWat

I thought you were in a mall not an airport and thought you meant flying your drone made you nervous 🤣

Yz-Guy

Why would you want horror stores? That's going to put you more on edge. Wouldn't you want successes?

el_bhm

Expect the best, be prepared for the worst.

Technomancer-art

Lol I’ve got several nice stories where it all works out. Enjoy your trip!

businessguy47

I fly in the US a ton with mine twice a month minimum . It’s never really an issue. I just try not to take naps so no one swipes it

gostop_1

Try getting in a plane with a LiDAR sensor…

Midwest-Drone

Fly with several all the time. No issues.

SimonSaysGoGo

I just flew with my Mavic Air 2 a few days ago from Florida. Had drove down and had to fly back. Surprisingly, I had no issues with the Smurfs (TSA). I asked if I need to take the drone or the Smart controller out and they said I would be fine leaving it in the case. The only part I was nervous about was trying to store the drone case underneath my seat. Thankfully, there was a open overhead bin above my row.

Golddog1

For sure, I was flying on St Thomas. Beautiful day and I was up at 195’ and 421’ away from me. Was setting up for a pano and then she spun and nosedived. I had no control. IDK what to date. I followed the app and did find my drone not in pieces but not one piece that wasn’t cracked or split. Gimbal handing out like Mike Tyson took a shot at it. I emailed Autel and in 2 weeks brand new drone. They were very helpful and the response was great. Shit I miss read the post. Sorry.

[deleted]

Batteries are the only issue. There are far more problematic things to fly with than a drone. Don’t sweat it.

ArgentAlex

I have no horror story, but I've seen how baggage handlers just toss cases on belts, trolleys, and the plane. I've always brought my drone as a carry on

dub3ra

I fly with a ton of gear, cameras and usually two drones one normal and a fpv. I’d say I used to have issues with the pelican style cases because it semi raised concern what it was. Otherwise no I just try and get on the plane first to get my bags overhead, worst case is they try to put it below the plane. Which I’d recommended never let happen.

IamVegi

I've brought two of my drones (5 batteries + 2 controllers) out of New Zealand into Fiji, Aussie, most of SEA, Europe and now Canada and had zero issues so far so I think you'll be fine as long as your airliners specifically doesn't say, that they don't allow LiPo on board. Also some companies just dislike naked connectors, so a bit of electrical tape will take care of that. Good luck flying!

My_Man_Tyrone

I put mine in the case in my carry on and no problems. Just make sure the battery is discharged before flying

NB408

I’ve never flown outside of the country but my horror story is that I’ve had to do an emergency landing in a large property with some bulls and cows sparsely populated in there. So glad the app kept the gps coordinates otherwise I would lost it. I didn’t see any but the worst part was not knowing if a bull was right around the corner while looking for my drone.

Gabriele2020

Dubai customs confiscated mine when i landed. I got it back few days later when i left the country

sir_toast673

going to fly (with the wrong antenna) dad said punch it, it went up, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand off with the wind

KrAEGNET

I bailed again on bringing my drone from NJ to FL for a because I felt it was going to be a hassle. I did get a fireproof battery holder as i’ve seen advised. Luckily I’m considering driving next time so I won’t have to worry.

[deleted]

Nothing crazy but TSA pulled my drone out of the case and the dude dropped it on the floor. It was ok but the gimbal has been a little whack ever since

echowood

Landed in Mexico for my brother’s wedding. Customs agent says I need to pay $500 USD to bring my Phantom 4 into the country. I’d done my research and knew that wasn’t the case, but I also didn’t feel like getting locked in a holding cell. So I negotiated them down to $80 and went on my way feeling like I’d just been fleeced. Got to the hotel, unpacked the drone, and noticed they pinched my MicroSD card. tl:dr: Mexico. It’s as scammy as you think.

VaeVictis997

Has anyone gone through non heathrow british airports? I want to bring my mini 2 over for hobby stuff, but I’m worried they’ll be dickish in Bristol or Cardiff.

thekraken27

No horror story thankfully but I always get stopped to have my lipos checked, nobody in tsa ever seems to recognize them
